I lived in Japan when I was 6 and one of the fondest memories i have is my father and I belting out this song in the barracks. I remember we would get every model and spend hours assembling them together. Thank you Dad
As an American who was a young boy in the 70’s, Yamato (Star Blazers to me) was as ingrained in my life as Star Wars was. I would rush home after school to catch the next daily episode. The continuing serialized storyline was like no other animated series I had ever seen. There were consequences. People died. It was no kids show. The previous day’s episode was the talk of the playground the next day. Great storytelling knows no nationality. Every time I hear this theme, i still get chills. Yamato Forever!
I was a 2yo italian boy when my father introduced to me Star Blazers. My young brain couldn't even describe how much it was beautiful, from art syle to the soundtrack. 20 years later I'm still heavly invested in Leiji works. I have built the 2199 model kit version of Yamato, read the manga and watched this video countless time. I still whish one day I could be a Black Tiger
Why RUclips took 7 years to recommend this to me? Here in Brazil the series was called "Patrulha Estelar" and was aired in the 80s. Thanks Japan for this amazing series and thanks Japanese Navy Band for this incredible performance.
2022 and I find this preciosity! I've been a humanitarian worker, missionary and later a teacher in many countries of the world. I had YAMATO in a CD in my car and used to "load up" listening to it on my way to the airport or to rescue operations. Star Blazers marked my youth and I loved it! At 19 I enlisted and became part of the crew of Mercy Ships, one of my jobs was to pilot the ship - guess what I remembered everytime I was at the helm? Yamatoooo!!! Thank you for posting this!!!
What a touching comment. That band plays Star Blazers' main theme everytime a rescue mission is deployed from Yokosuka Base. Family and friends on land wave to crew on board in tears.
Truly amazing to watch a naval band paying such homage to an animated series from the 70s/80s. It just shows how powerfully the Yamato myth transcends time and equally inspires generations of fans and military alike ! Superb singers and musicians, just wish I could have been present at this great performance !
FYI, Yamato is the name of the best Carrier Vessel during WW2.The same Carrier Vessel that attacked Pearl Harbor. The anime took it from there as Spaceship as respect and to honour the name of Yamato. Btw, the name of Admiral is Yamamoto.
Well, no - Yamato was a battleship, not a carrier, and was not commissioned until after Pearl Harbor. It was sunk in April 1945 while on a one-way mission to Okinawa. Uchu Senkan Yamato didn't just honor the name of the ship - in the show, the battleship herself was recovered, refit as a space battleship and launched to save the human race.
You may be getting confused with Shinano, intended to be a Yamato Class battleship, but was converted to an aircraft carrier after the losses at midway. She was sunk 10 days after commissioning by a US submarine with a loss of 1400 persons.
The Big guy on the right (Petty officer 1st class) sounds almost like Mr. Isao Sasaki (the original Yamato OP singer). These guys got quality and the Orchestra sounds really good !!!
I don't think non-japanese or resident aliens can join, my reference is from a youtube video of the Marine ( Nautical) Self Defence Force Band playing this theme, the caption read that the Yamato theme was the unofficial Naval Defence Force Theme.

Not true, NietTristan! There are many servicemen in the United States armed forces that are not of American nationality. In fact, serving in the US military can be a factor in becoming a naturalized US citizen.
I am Japanese. 45 years ago I was in elementary school. Back then, I grew up watching this anime (reruns and theatrical versions). Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato still impress me. A gigantic battleship that appeared in despair after defeating White Comet and City Empire. After that, when I was a child, I didn't understand the disappearance of the super-giant battleship until I became an adult. (meaning of matter and antimatter) But when I saw this comment, I was surprised that Yamato was broadcast in America. This is because the battleship Yamato carried only one-way fuel, and was a battleship that carried out kamikaze attacks against the American forces.
I think you'll find that there's nothing Americans respect more than the guy who just gave us a black eye. plus it's battleship in space, big guns giant starship what isn't there to love
The strong message of this anime is redemption. The battleship was taken from the bottom of the ocean carrying the name of the greatest WWII Japan’s battleship named after the ancient name of the country itself, to endure a possible deadly mission to save the earth. This time the brave Japanese soldiers are willing to give their life for the grater good of human kind. Beautiful.
my dad grew up with space battleship yamato and said it was infinitely better then everything else at the time. having seen it as a child and adult, i agree it is very good. my main complaint is only that it was so cool it ruined most sci fi for me.
I must admit, that the battleship Yamato and her crew served with honor. There is nothing to be hidden here. When the animators went on to name various characters after the generals and admirals in WW2, that went a bit far.
My older brother and I grew up watching Starblazers back in the 70’s, and only introduced in to our younger brother this past year via 2199 and 2202. We still sing along to the theme every time it’s on! Save us all one more time Yamato!
