  • This video shows how the IC-9700 operates on DSTAR, how to set it up for DSTAR and some of the features you recognize are also in this radio. It's easy enough to get on and start making contacts. BUT, it sounds WAY better than something like a 7100..

    I would love to have this radio, but I just don't have two grand laying around for a basically dual band VHF, UHF radio. I already have the IC-7100 and I just can't justify spending that kind of money for this radio. Now, should I win the lottery, then I will buy one. Until then I hope that everyone who has one enjoys it. Thanks for posting.

    Don't forget, there's the echo test option as well. I happen to have a rarely-used D-STAR repeater in my area, which is really helpful when setting up audio, since I can hear exactly how I'm sounding through the repeater.

    Great video, Thanks. In Houston, there is no D-STAR repeater. My only connection mode possible is through Terminal mode. I try XLX227A setup as you show in your video, and work well. Hos I can connect to another reflector and do I need the IP address for a new reflector? If yes does, there is a list of reflectors with IP addresses?

    Eric I’m just getting back on the air after tens years of being silent. Have been a ham since 1977, bought the 7610 for HF, considering this rig for vhf/uhf. Guys here locally said to get a D-Star radio, can I operate locally on FM analog repeaters with this rig besides all the digital modes. I’m also looking at the 5100d but I would rather have it mobile. Should I buy the 9700 for home or just get a couple of the 5100’s, one for home and one mobile? Thanks.

Once I fixed it, in 5 minutes data came up. Used to be a server geek. Time is key for a massive system to talk. One node is off, system crash.

    @HamRadioConcepts :: I watched all of the videos you created for this radio. I still have a Yaesu ft-847 that is more than capable! It's got very good sensitivity but it doesn't have the new features and some of the goodies internally that the new radios have.
    One question I have for you though is have you operated the radio for an extended period of time? The reason I asked is one complaint about the radio is it has a frequency drift issue and you need to purchase the TXCO option.
    I would be tempted to buy the radio but I don't know of too many people that use 1296 and I'm in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It's not really that popular a band. I'm curious, and I don't think you can answer, why they didn't put 6 meters on it except that HF rigs generally have 6 meters on them. That would be the only answer I suppose. For me though I would prefer a radio that had 6, 2, and 70 cm that had excellent performance on those three bands. That's just me and there may be 1296 activity and other places.
    In order for 1296 to be effective one needs a very good antenna system, hard line, and antenna mounted preamp which then means you need a sequencer. You pretty much need one for 2 and 70cm as well if you really want to get into the game but it's almost a requirement for 1296. I'm curious as to your comments on this.
    I'm not dissing the radio. Or you. Before I pop down the money they want for this I'd like to know from users what their experiences have been. It's great that for those that have an IC 7300 that it matches and they can go side by side but I don't think it'll match my Yaesu ft 2000. LOL. 73

      JustAnotherGuy the drift issue only relates to 1.2g operation from what I am told, but I will be using this radio for EME moonbounce very soon when I can get the time to assemble the antenna. I don’t know enough about the drift issue but it’s no issue at all on VHF UHF from what I have seen yet.. 6 meters is already in the 7300 so they probably opted to add 1.2g because hey, why not? Anyone else have an SDR for 1.2g? Not really

    • @justanotherguy3850
      @justanotherguy3850 4 года назад

      @@HamRadioConcepts :: I'm not knocking the radio! I haven't even had a chance to try one out like you have. I'm thinking about it though. Where I live I command the airwaves because of the altitude I'm at. Really. But the frequency drift reported on eham wasn't specific to 1.2 GHz. Maybe we can get some reports elsewhere since I understand your focus here. Again, I wasn't putting you or the radio down.

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  4 года назад +1

      JustAnotherGuy no worries I understand. But I really think from what I read it was only to 1.2g but I am not too sure

    • @justanotherguy3850
      @justanotherguy3850 4 года назад

      @@HamRadioConcepts :: okay. You're going to hate me. I'm going to give some information that you didn't ask for.
      If I had the capability I would send you some hard-line, preferably some 7/8 inch hard-line with N connectors so that you could set up an excellent test station. Not that you have a bad one. I hope you're using at least LMR400.
      Being a repeater owner I have rolls of hard-line but unfortunately I can't ship them. If you happen to have any RG-214 that would work but it's expensive. Hard-line is even cheaper. My point about the hard-line is if you want to really, really see what a radio can do, put it on a great antenna with excellent cable and it'll show itself. Most users that are serious about working SSB have a tower mounted preamp. Those are normally +20dB which is we all know also increases the noise floor.
      An excellent antenna system may also show its weaknesses. For example, the FT-847 is really, really hot on VHF. I use it whenever there's a fire in the hills where I live because it actually works better than even my commercial Motorola's. The side effect is that it also picks up the paging transmitters if I don't use a paging transmitter filter from PAR Electronics. PAR filters will let you transmit up to 50 Watts through them. Maybe more on SSB. I'd have to check with Dale on that one.
      It's not actually intermod, it's front end overload that causes the first mixer to go nonlinear and creates its own frequencies that happen to match up with the paging frequencies. I'd love to run that test on the IC 9700. I'm real interested in buying the IC 9700.
      If using a higher-quality antenna system especially if it involves a tower mounted preamp it's almost guaranteed that you're going to need to run and intermod filter. The current generation is the OCI bandpass filter that replaces the DCI bandpass filter based out of Canada. Both remove out of band signals and improve receiver sensitivity. One way to tell if you need one is to put up an excellent antenna system and then turn your yagi towards a popular communication site where you were surely find a paging transmitter on 153 or 159 MHz or both. Note your S Unit reading of the noise floor (FM) before and after. If it goes up when you aim at the paging transmitter it's affecting you. This also applies however to FM broadcast band and aircraft and control towers that cause interference.
      www.ocicom.com/index.php/2-
      I apologize if I'm deviating from your review because that's not my intent. What I'm actually saying is I'd love to see how well the radio does in a serious VHF/UHF/SHF environment. I'd also recommend changing the UHF connector for 2m to an N connector.
      My sincere apologies for appearing to hijack your thread because you do an outstanding job already! I just thought it would be fair that users understand what happens when you have a receiver with a hot front end. I have the DCI filter and the difference is like night and day. It really is that important. They make one that covers 144 - 148 so that you don't lose the FM band but the OCI covers 144 - 148 simultaneously. There's also a 440 version. Even ham radio repeaters put out spurs.

    IC-9700 - no wifi, no bluetooth, no built in GPS, no "out of band" reception... as in no FM broadcast, no Weather, no Air, no marine, no police, no fire. No cross band repeating either. No double monitoring of two stations on the same band. Frequency drift, no built in duplexer for UHF/UHF. Other than that, GREAT Radio!.... not happy.
    This could all be fixed with a firmware upgrade, and a half dozen external add-ons.
    Seriously, this radio begs for hacked firmware and some add-in boards. Its no-output little brother at least has WiFi and BT.
