We lived in a rental apartment for 17 years when we were given notice of non renewal for our lease. We were all devastated. We moved in as kids (3 of us) with my mom who has MS (and is bound to a wheelchair) and we all grew up there, played at the park, went to school there, learned to drive, graduated school, one moved out of the nest after 15 years. Sadly, it showed me how heartless landlords can be. I know how this lady feels.
This really disturbed me because the landlady was so unapproachable and cold. having said that you don't need to be "friends" just civil and stick to business. Her attitude after 22yrs. was awful.
Basically, the landlord never offered or provided any updating to the house. You live in a home for 22 years, it will have some wear and tear. It is NOT trashed.
The defendant is getting $700 more per month with the new tenant after 22 years of savings from not repainting (which she’s legally obligated to do) and nine years of savings from not fixing the central air conditioning. She’s a darn fool for keeping even a nickel for things as frivolous as a 22 year old plastic towel bar and some adhesive on the wall, because she’s in a state where she’ll owe double of whatever is wrongfully withheld.
Finding a new tenant and a tenant who actually pays the rent is difficult. This landowner was outrageous. She should have given the majority of the deposit back wrapped in a big pretty bow.

She's the type of landlord that doesn't want to put one cent into their property even though the property is a business that's subjected to normal wear and tear. If she had her way the tenant would have to replace the roof because it rained too hard. Not only is she mean, she's greedy
My last landlord wanted me to replace the 20-year-old washing machine because it stopped working after I had been there 2 months. I said "no" and she dropped it.
That landlord is nuts. $115 for a plastic towel bar? You can get that at Lowe's or Home Depot for less than less than $20. Then she wants to charge for the bathroom fan (which is the landlords responsibility). Then $900 for storage. 🤣 Crazy lady. Most of the issues in the pictures falls under normal wear.
I know a lot of people don’t want to own a home and that’s fine but this amount of loyalty to someone else’s property for them to literally kick you out MIGHT have been avoided if she bought her own home. I wish the plaintiff nothing but the best.
That tenant saved the landlord so much money over the years. The landlord should have never asked for anything back. Now look at her, she has to pay double. Serves her right.
The plaintiff seems like a very good reasonable person ,the defendant seems very mean and ungrateful. No point to All the yelling the judge is doing just too extra.
22 years. If the tenant didn’t pay the entire mortgage, it’s darn near close. Landlord should be ashamed and embarrassed. She should’ve sent her tenant a parting gift.
Wrong! If her rent stayed the same for 22 years she was LONG over due for an increase. We had tenants that we rented to that were like "Family" and hated to raise their rent after many some years. Eventually we HAD to raise it something It was only $180 a month in the mid to late 1980's! We tried to make it $210 when it should have been $400 minimum and figured we were doing her a huge favor. She called us every name in the book. She moved out and we raised the rent to a fair number and everyone that rented claimed it was fair. Tenants are worse than landlords but slumlords suck!
Insane landlord.. holy crap. After 22 years unless the bathtub is broken in half, the tenant isn't responsible for ANYTHING. Paint, carpets, holes, NOTHING.
That woman with the defendant just looks like she is so angry and seems to be driving the defendant’s anger. Look at the defendant’s witness’s face whenever they first walk into court she is staring bullets at the plaintiff.. 🤔 🧐
I think this may be a case of family members pushing the landlord to kick her out, raise the rent and keep her security deposit. 3,000$ for storing those few odds and ends? I have seen several cases of family members butting in with elderly parents. Almost never turns out well for them.
My dad has been renting the same home for almost 18 years. Nothing has been updated or painted but of course the rent has been increasing through the years lol. Curious what the landlord will say when he moves out as far as the conditions of the house
When she first stated renting to her the landlord didn't feel threatened by her, but over the years, she got old and wrinkled and the tenant didn't and that pissed her off, so she started picking at the tenant. Anyone can see the raging jealousy and insecurity in the landlord's eyes and the fact that the tenant was aware of it and it tickled her.
I had a landlord just like her when I was a young woman, mean old bitty. You couldn't even walk across the floor. I had to hold my toddler on my lap most of the day. She lived downstairs and we couldn't wait to leave. I was always nervous and finally my husband had enough and we moved out. Even her grown children said she was a difficult person. Her husband left her early in the marriage and each child left when they turned 18. However, that was a beautiful apartment.
This lady is going to have an eye opening experience when she has new tenants. The plaintiff was as gift of a tenant! She should have given her a month or two of rent for free as a thank you for 22 yrs of peaceful tenancy!!!!
My last tenant was in my house 4 years...yes there were quite a few things like 800 dollars worth I could have charged her for but she had little kids and was never late on the rent..not once, she got her whole deposit back. This is ridiculous Id love for this to be all thats done in 22 years. Like be grateful somebody is basically buying you a house...
Damn I wonder why she leased for 22 yrs??? She could’ve bought a home by now …. She basically provided this ungrateful landlord with 22 yrs worth of income and she’s still trying to keep the lady’s deposit smh …. People 🤦♀️
Once she rented the house and settled in, she probably enjoyed where she was and made it her " home" A lot of people don't like to pack it all up and move. She's more than likely made friends nearby, knows the area, etc. I've seen this quite a bit.
As a renter myself I cringe at the monies being basicly flushed down the toilet ,sure a guy has a place to sleep ,eat ,etc! But at the end of the day you own nothing ,and plus you have paid for someone else's house 🏠😔 I lived in a house for 7 years once ,at the end when the landlord decided to sell he gave me first option to buy,but wouldn't honor our agreement of rent to buy that we had agreed to in the beginning, but luckily for him nothing in writing. I payed over $40,000 in rent at that time and the house was selling for $54,000. Smh.
I hope the defendant gets the exact type of tenants she rightfully deserves, then maybe she will learn to appreciate what a rare gem she had! I understand the need for a rent increase especially after decades at one rate. I would have went to my tenant and said look the going rate is $1600 for my place. I need to raise the rent because everything has gone up and I can’t continue to eat those costs but since you have been with me for so long (and I value you) how about we meet in the middle at $1200 a month ? If she was hesitant, I would have offered to repaint the entire place and “spruce” it up for her to enjoy and she damn sure would have had that a/c fixed. It would have been fixed as soon as it was in my power or ability to do so. It would have been my #1 priority out of respect for her being a good tenant. This woman has no idea what kind of tenants are out there and instead of being grateful she had one (who by all appearances was a model tenant) she decided to not only boot her but spit in her face by keeping her entire deposit. She seriously expected that plastic towel bar (that was probably put in when the house was built) to still be there after 22 years- for sure- but more than likely it was as old as that 60’s tile. If her pictures were the only things wrong with the place when she moved out, I would have had her deposit in hand the day she turned over her keys and we did the final walk through. I’m so glad her state allows 2x’s the security for that kind of nonsense. I wish the judge wouldn’t have taken off a penny because the landlord just didn’t get it. Hopefully, she has learned her lesson… but I doubt it she seemed had her Scrooge face on till the very end.

I've been in my place 26 year this July and I've done ALL repairs myself, I've even replaced the stairs and railing, built a deck, and a floating deck by the garage, a huge storage shed, etc....My landlady just keeps raising the rent and thinks she will be the victor in the end. Little does she know I have plans before I leave because I own the refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer, garage door opener, etc and I'm going to have a hell of a sale.
@@getin3949 lol I just picture you selling the stairs 😆😆

@@getin3949 if I had a tenant for 26 years and I got along with them I might consider giving them that property in my will. That's just the kind of person I am!

Well, $1K of it is her own money back. Too bad the landlord couldn't be hammered for more. In my state it's triple damages.
That landlord will get nothing but bad people renting from her after this because that's how karma works

The defendant is tripping, someone in her family probably told her she can get more money.
This defendant is unbelievable! She did bare minimum upgrades if that during the entire 22yrs of this tenancy and has the nerve to feel entitled to keep the security deposit?!?!? WOW!
Very similar to what happened to me. No repairs or updates and then all of a sudden jacked the rent by $500 because they could. Best thing that happened because I discovered two streets over that I could own a gorgeous condo. Left, got ALL my security and never looked back.
Not true, she repainted the living room and did repairs after the inspections. Listening is a skill.

I think there are many perks to renting vs owning. However, if you’re willing to pay rent at the same place for 22+ years, you really should invest in your own property! That’s nearly a quarter of a Mil that was invested in someone else’s estate 😒
Yeah, but you still had to have somewhere to live and that had to be paid for.
I agree but im sure there was a reason. The bank well let you pay rent but then be like well you pay rent theres no way you could afford paying mortgage too. And its like well i wouldnt... pay... both. Or if shes like pn a fixed income or something

Love how the lady just smiles!! Keeping it classy!!
What a mean landlord 😡
I am happy the plaintiff won the case.
Judge Milian is truly one in 1 million. I can honestly say, from the eyes of the beholder she is gorgeous inside and out!

Unfortunately the more you deal with people who rip you off or take advantage of you, you have to learn not to trust other people or they'll take advantage of you. So sad that we can't all be genuinely respectful and fair. It makes our society less kind and generous.

Let this be a lesson that we need to work towards ownership..Sis could’ve paid a mortgage for that long ..
Owning a house is not right for everyone.
She would’ve likely paid a lot more on a mortgage, home insurance, property taxes, etc. how ownership has its benefits. But it has its downsides.
I'm happy the plaintiff won. I've dealt with a few slumlords, and I wish I had educated my younger self on my rights.
She is a knit picking landlord, wow.
That tenant is adorable and innocent smiling the whole time
WAY TO GO JUDGE SHE FINALLY AWARDED SOMEONE MORE THAN CHUMP CHANGE BRAVO 😊💯
I know a lot of people don’t want to own a home and that’s fine but this amount of loyalty to someone else’s property for them to literally kick you out MIGHT have been avoided if she bought her own home. I wish the plaintiff nothing but the best.

When Doug doesn’t even want to talk the person who lost the case you know they’re no good . Very mean woman
She booted her out to get more monthly rent, she’s gonna regret that decision in the long run.
$500 more x 12 months equals $6000 a year in five years that is $30,000. What regret?
actually it was $700/month $8400/year for $42,000 in 5 years!!!!
Yep! She probably got some young tenants in there after!! They’ll tear your place up lol
That tenant saved the landlord so much money over the years. The landlord should have never asked for anything back. Now look at her, she has to pay double. Serves her right.
yes, no gaps in rent from someone moving out and gap till someone else moved in. The new tenant hopefully saw this and never moved in

I love how amused the plaintiff was the whole time. She knows that landlady is ridiculous!
No matter she is making 700.00 more for the same apartment and wants the tenant to return the place ready for the next. Greedy has no limits. 😢
22 years. If the tenant didn’t pay the entire mortgage, it’s darn near close. Landlord should be ashamed and embarrassed. She should’ve sent her tenant a parting gift.
Increased the rent by $700? Yikes… Landlords really are the purest form of evil on this planet…
Gosh after 22 years isn't it time for an update landlord?! I can't believe her!!
Lol... right! Should've had 2 or 3 upgrades in 22 years...smh
Landlords are the worst
Holy crap 😂 That landlord is going to be incredibly sorry. Think of the ppl she has to deal with from now on. Non payers, nasty ppl, junkies etc....
Why do these landlords get so greedy!? Wow the defendant is a piece of work! So glad she had to pay nearly double back!
"You're kinda mean" was my favourite part
Lol...I just said the same thing. She came in with an attitude....smh
i caught that too.
JM nailed it when she told the defendant she was mean.
My dad has been renting the same home for almost 18 years. Nothing has been updated or painted but of course the rent has been increasing through the years lol. Curious what the landlord will say when he moves out as far as the conditions of the house
I love Douglas lol his facial expressions in this case are too much
That granny is basically a grinch. How unhappy are you in life that you’ll do this to someone that’s been loyal for 22 years
What a great renter. I repair and repaint my rental all the time. It’s called upkeep.
As a property owner I can tell you that the owner is crazy to get rid of this tenant. She should have given her back the entire deposit plus interest.
That constant “smile” on the plaintiff’s face is super creepy😵💫😂😂😄
When she first stated renting to her the landlord didn't feel threatened by her, but over the years, she got old and wrinkled and the tenant didn't and that pissed her off, so she started picking at the tenant. Anyone can see the raging jealousy and insecurity in the landlord's eyes and the fact that the tenant was aware of it and it tickled her.
The landlord is fixing to learn a valuable lesson and pray she could have that lady back as a tenant
A landlord can put whatever they want in a lease but if it against the law already in place it is null and void and no judge will enforce it.
The landlord doesn’t have to give her a penny back the court pays her because she went on TV. Greedy landlord shame on you
This lady is going to have an eye opening experience when she has new tenants.
Right? After 5 years we would change carpet, repainting everything, etc. It's a great day when you have tenants where you don't have to but not often.
What a greedy, ungrateful and unreasonable landlord.
She could've bought a house but she already had a home! House does not equal home!
Wow. 22 years. Poor lady. Home ownership my people, home ownership.
22 years ? she’d be bout done paying for a house at that point lol.
@beth T ok, beth.
Her rent was was soo cheap that’s why way cheaper than a mortgage
The Landlord is out to lunch. The woman lived in her unit for 22 years. She should be grateful!!!!!
Smh.
You didn't get a "rent to own" agreement in writing 😳
That's an expensive lesson
@@GolfProVR maybe short term ,but never overall
Excellent verdict. 👏👏👏👏👏 GREEDY, LADY!
What a greedy old woman. Give the tenant her money back.
