While in prison Merle Haggard was encouraged to write lyrics and make music by a fellow convict and when Johnny Cash famously recorded a concert at Folsom prison where Merle was in the audience, it further encouraged Merle. He, to me, was one of the greats! Thanks Biz.

My mom was raised in Tennessee and played all the old school country tunes.. She was a tough mother and my pops was even tougher.. All my ma had to say " just wait til your dad comes home" I knew right there I was in trouble.. They raised me right.. RIP MA AND PA, see ya again some day, see ya upstairs some day..

Legendary country singer songwriter Merle Haggard came from the same part of California as me. Haggard went to prison for armed robbery in the late 1950's. He served three years of time and was paroled in 1960. Ronald Reagan, California governor at the time, granted him a pardon in 1972. When you're read for more from Merle Haggard check out "Okie From Muskogee", "The Fightin' Side of Me", "Workin Man Blues", "Tulare Dust", "Irma Jackson", and "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive" among others. By the way, parents can discipline children without beating them. In fact, beating children tends to turn them in to future abusers. Plenty of people deny that, but plenty of people are abusers without realizing it...

The Bakersfield Sound which changed Country and Rock music. Merle's breakthrough commercial success album "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive" was/is huge. Merle's band The Strangers are one of the best bands in music.
The Bakersfield Sound is responsible for Country Rock influence on Dylan, CSNY, The Stones, Byrds, Allman Brothers, Southern Rock in general and too many other artists to mention. I grew up in the 60s with Country and Rock music in my parents house, my parents loved to go to Country and Rock dance clubs every Saturday night, and concerts. Haggard aka "Hag" is my mom's favorite Country artist.

Merle pronounced with the second e silent. This song is loosely based on truth. He was in prison but, not for a life sentence. He was an obitual offender. Not really serious crimes but he was hard to hold. He kept escaping so, that's what actually put him in prison. His crimes were only bad enough to sentence him to shorter jail terms. The repeated escapes sent him to prison. He did get early release. I once heard that Johnny Cash had something to do with his release but, I don't know. I didn't see Johnny mentioned in the bio I read. He did hear Johnny while in prison and felt that was something he might be able to do.
Okie From Muskogee, Fightin' Side of Me. When Did Right Become Wrong. Even Harold's Super Service. Lot of great old tunes.

Merle (rhymes with Earl) is a legend of the Outlaw Country genre and benefited from a prison system that rehabilitated its prisoners and offered pardons and early release. Also, Discipline doesn’t have to be physical. There are lots of ways to discipline your kids that don’t involve physical violence.

I am so attached to the song and I absolutely love your reaction man. But my thought right now in this conversation where I paused it, is that it's not black and white man. It's not like they're either good or bad, and I know that you know this and I'm probably preaching to the choir. But it's a complex thing when your parents try to set an example for you and you're so young you don't even realize the sacrifices they're making. You just have to go out and be experiencing your boundaries and pushing.
But then later you see these people growing up and doing exactly what you did except they're doing it in their own way and it's just a process of discovery. It's just agonizing if you care for somebody but it's the way of life. It's how we got here. Love your reaction brother.

Merle has so many great songs. "Are the Good Times Really Over" is a good one you would appreciate.
Back in the 80's when I played in a country band, we did several Merle songs. At least one per set. When we'd play "Mama Tried" we would go right into a song by Johnny Paycheck called "I'm the Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised". You'll have to check that tune out someday and you'll see how they sorta relate to each other.

Out of all the movie stars and what not I have known in my life. I went to his concert. That man played his heart out. Best concert ever walk of life there. I don't care what color you where were you you from if you were a gang, if you weren't a gang, if you were a family with your kids. Merle Haggard rules and he is the only one I ever asked. An article from besides when I went backstage. Passes to oz fest in 02 with the gorge and Pantera signed my bottom however.
Ever Merle Haggard. He lived a life Fisher and he is part of the highway man. Which I suggest you check out silver wings. You need to play moral haggard, silver Wings. Of course, there's so many hints of his but I have just a best concert. I ever went to my life. And he played his heart out. I don't remember when they quit I mean technically, he was only playing, supposed to play for like 2 hours and that's with the Chicken dinner with that ticket and yeah, he played until well, into the night, it was insane him and his son, so God bless marrow haggard. Yes, he was in Folsom prison. Vinnie, I don't remember how he became friends with Johnny Cash and everybody. But the highway man consists of johnny cash willie nelson wayland jennings , merle haggard , chris christopher soon

Every kid, male and female need Father's and Mother's while they are in their formative years.
I have managed to have the nuclear family. The whole Mom and Dad staying together, our 2.5 kids 😅 I really think that the basics just aren't taught to kids, today. Every child male and female should know everything that they need to know, to take care of themselves alone. And they should all be taught the basics of being a decent human before they are released into the wild. Lol But, as we all know, not every kid is going to have these basic needs met. This is waaaay too deep of a conversation for the comment section. So, I'll leave it at this. 🥰
Have a great day Biz!!! 💙

My oldest son ended up in jail at 19.. he was messed up on drugs and a gay guy propositioned him.. my son.. being straight said no.. not my thing. apparently .. this guy didn't take no for an answer and 2 hrs later when my 19 yr old son said NO again.. he was followed to the bathroom and this dude really went in hard.. my son.. went off... if he had been sober .. never would have happened.. but he wasn't and he beat this person up. My son spent 9 months in jail with a hate crime over his head at 19.. he's now 36... Married for 11 yrs and been clean and sober for 12 yrs. God is good.. My son could have been in prison for the rest of his life for 1 altercation. I raised him right.. the system .. sometimes screws you. To me.. he didn't do anything wrong.
