    Thanks Geoff, I was able to resolve my issue immediately. I was trying to create a new body, create a sketch, then use the pocket tool.

    I really like your videos and find they truly help me understand FreeCAD. I've begun encountering an odd issue I cannot figure out where I am creating pockets that just never show up. I follow the exact same steps each time but instead of the expected hole all I get is a vertical line on the surface the hole was supposed to go through. It first started when creating pockets on curved surfaces but I've had it happen on flat ones as well. I thought it was only when I was creating round pockets but it happens with squares and rectangles as well. It doesn't seem to matter which plane I try but 99% of the time is is after I have already added one pocket and I am trying to add a second (usually on a different side of the part). As an example I have a cylinder 30mm OD and 20mm ID and 50mm tall. I add a 5mm pocket 5mm deep )so all the way through to the centre) on the YZ plane and it works fine. I then go to add another 5mm hole on the XZ plane following the exact same steps but when I "OK" the pocket the hole disappears and there is only a vertical line where the circle originally was. Any ideas on why and what I can do?

      Thanks for your question. That's an interesting problem that you have there. So far I haven't been able to replicate it. Would you mind sending me the offending model so I can have a look at? E-mail: info at glassondesignstudio.com.au

      @@GlassonDesignStudio Thanks. I tried sending an email and I'm not sure if it went through. I get a message "Your message has been sent" followed by another "Unable to send email. Contact the site administrator if the problem persists". Either way I really appreciate the offer to help. A coffee is on its way. 😁

    Thank you for the excellent video. Very helpful! Can you tell me how you got the color scheme that you are using? I like the black background of the menus......

    • @GlassonDesignStudio
      @GlassonDesignStudio  3 года назад

      Thanks for your kind words Tim. I have moved away from using that colour scheme because it's not quite so good for demonstrations to people with impaired vision. That said, I was using a one of two stylesheets - Dark-Blue, and Darker-Blue. You can set the style sheet on the General preferences page. I hope that helps.

    Is there a way to use an existing part design to create a pocket? For example, I have a faceted shape that comes to a point and would like a stand to put it in where the pocket matches the faceted shape.

      I’ve had a quick look and you should be able to do it using the Boolean cut tool on the Part workbench. I had both parts as separate bodies in the same model file. I will investigate further

      I'm glad that I could help. Just beware that you may come in contact with the topological naming problem if you create sketches on a face - especially if you then modify the face.

    This was a good explaination of what you did show, but what I have noticed is that in none of the pocket tool videos shows how to align that pocket on that face. I have tried to do it by creating points on the sketch, but when I try to apply the pocket my part vanishes. I'm obviously doing it wrong, but I have no idea why.

    • @GlassonDesignStudio
      @GlassonDesignStudio  3 года назад

      I don’t understand what you’re trying to do. Why aren’t you creating the sketch on the right aligned beforehand?

    How would I cut a vertical pocket in a cylinder?

    • @GlassonDesignStudio
      @GlassonDesignStudio  Год назад +2

      Thanks for your question Jack. If you're talking about creating a lengthwise pocket, then that's a simple matter of sketching the outline of the pocket on the top or bottom end of the cylinder, and then using a through all pocket.
      If you're talking about a pocket through the long side of the cylinder, then you'll need to create a sketch on a plane that is parallel to the side of the cylinder and then create the pocket. I hope that helps
