However, after one year, I am still waiting. Online says "please wait" as there are so many applicants. I want to travel during this time urgently to visit a sick relative. I cannot even get an appointment to visit them even though I tried. They keep saying please "wait" for some more time. Do you have any other suggestions please? Is there a way to walk-in and explain?

    Hi, I'm currently on a trip for 6 months August - Feb. (5 months and a day before the 6 month period to be exact) and I'm planning to stay for 1-2 more months (so 7-8 months overall if possible). I'm a permanent resident in the US and already completed my 5 year statutory in 2020. I'm planning to apply for my citizenship when I get back to the US this year. My question is, will my 5 year period reset back to 0 and have to redo my 5 years before I can apply for my citizenship again?
    I have proof that I'm still a resident and I've been and still living in the same house for 5-6 years, have a US bank account, drivers license and will pay my tax when W2 becomes available. Please advise.

    Thanks, great info. I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it. Quick question. Ive been a green card holder for 7 years now. I spend the majority of time in my homecountry as i do busines there and partially in the US where i have business too. Im an independent proffesional. Im always back and forth without spending more than 5 months outside the US. Would ike to apply for citizenship but dont quite fit with the 50% rule that requires that in the last 5 years one would have to reside at least 50% of the time within US soil. Do you find this fact enough to inhibit me to apply for citizenship? or should i just go ahead and apply without major ocnesquences if the process is denied?. Side note: my son who received his green card at the same time me and my wife did, just became a US citizen as he did reside in the US for th last 4 years while attending college. Thanks

      I believe there is no problem in getting your pension living outside the US but the problem is you have to live in the US as a green card. if not you will loose your GC and charged you as abandoning it. Then your pension is affected once your GC is revoked. In this case, you can no longer enter the US without a valid green card. Better to be a citizen than a green card because you can live outside the US as you can.

      If it ends up being greater than 6 months but less than a year and you can show the border official you had intent to return or could not return due to extreme circumstances (like no flights from your country to the US), you should be ok. However, I would recommend calling an immigration lawyer to talk through all your options. Check out avvo.com (I am not affiliated with them in any way) - if you need a free consult, you can check the box to see which lawyers offer free consults. Good luck!

After 5 years of being a permanent resident, I had to apply for a second time because the first time was during my marriage to an American spouse, but now I'm facing a divorce. So my attorney suggested me to withdraw my previous application and apply based on my 5 years as a permanent resident. I wonder if still I will be asked questions about my current marital status.

    Hi Maneesha , i am born in Doha , my sister is a citizen. Then Is it faster to get green card through sibling immigration OR do the green card thru H1b work visa?

    • @maneeshamukhi
      @maneeshamukhi  3 года назад +2

      Through a sibling, you are looking at 10+ years. Through H1B it depends on which category you fall in - EB2 or EB3. My guess is it will be faster through H1B, but you can also do both. You can start both processes and whichever one comes first, you can adjust your status using that one. Also, fyi I am not an attorney, this is an educated guess based on my knowledge of immigration.

      @@maneeshamukhi Appreciate the reply Maneesha. I tght we couldnot start subling immigration simultaneously.

      @maneeshamukhi  3 года назад

      @@GeorgePhilipBobby I would confirm that with an immigration attorney (I work with a lot of them, but I am not one myself). I know for sure that you can file a green card through work and spouse at the same time so I imagine it's the same for another family member.

    Hi maneesha I have a question to ask I just got my US citizenship through naturalzation prosses, do I have to surrender my citizenship of India, can i still keep my Indian passport and visit India without apply any Indian visa. thanks

    • @alisonwaterman2895
      @alisonwaterman2895 3 года назад

      You do have to surrender your citizenship, but you can apply for the Overseas Citizen of India card which gives you some rights to live and work in India still (but not vote): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_Citizenship_of_India. With a US passport you can also easily apply for an Indian tourist visa online if you're looking at short-term stays only.

    Good video, chock full of practical pros and cons. I understand this video is geared towards an audience interested in the family, travel, and financial implications of US citizenship. Those are huge ofcourse. It's also worth mentioning a sidebar to consider....do you agree with American ideology/the Constitution/the American position policy in the World? For most, that's an easy choice, a non-issue. Just saying, a point to consider, as renouncing your original country's citizenship and taking an oath of allegiance to the US is not a small thing.

  • @mnz6324ify
    @mnz6324ify 3 года назад +1

    Their is no benefit for having dual citizenship because you can always renounce your US citizenship at the consulate that a person is from, you have to declare any foreign money that you make to the IRS regardless.

    Hi, thanks for good video, the first question you mentioned that to get citizenship you have to go through the GC process, so how you can directly become a citizen? can you go through employment-based citizenship?

    • @maneeshamukhi
      @maneeshamukhi  3 года назад +5

      No, every path first leads to a green card, then you have to wait 3-5 years to apply for citizenship. There is no direct path to citizenship (except for through the military). Sorry for the delayed response, I missed this comment somehow!
