If you've just become a U.S. citizen, this video is for you! I walk through 4 things you MUST do (and 1 optional). I recommend doing them in the order I explain - some processes are slightly different during the pandemic and I share how to navigate them (such as updating your social security record). I hope you find it helpful!
What happens if someone is not able to come back to US before SB 1 Visa expires. I have been approved, it expires in end of December 2021. The airline ticket prices are too high now because of holidays season. If I come back in January when ticket prices are lower then what happens?
SSA wouldn't process my father-in-law's retirement application because they said they never received his Naturalization cert. We mailed his original (no photocopies allowed) via tracked priority mail. They claimed they never received it, but we got signature confirmation. The agency wouldn't accept liability and told us we needed to pay $555 for a replacement or else they would not process his retirement. I was furious and wrote to my state's senator. Surprisingly, they ended up finding it after that. SO, if you MUST mail in proof of citizenship, I highly recommend you mailing your US passport (if you have one) because it is way cheaper to replace. Also, extremely important you update your status to SSA as soon as you become a citizen so that you don't have to send it in when you're trying to apply for benefits because it will delay the processing.
I applied for my passport on the same day I took my oath. My passport book only took 3 weeks only I did paid to be expedited and my passport cardo received it three days after my passport book. I’m still waiting for my citizenship certificate. I’m In Texas and I’m glad I paid a little extra to get my passport under a month I recommend to expedited.
I updated my social security record first , I send the application and my ID and my citizenship certificate so as soon as I get my I’d and my certificate back I will apply for passport
Thank you. Awesome information. Exactly what I was looking for. Just did the ceremony yesterday, and you have the marching orders all laid out. Thanks again.
Hi ! How long you waited to apply for a new social security card? Until you had your passport? Were you able to apply for a passport simply using your naturalisation certificate? Can I still have job interviews with my old personal informations? I have a name change also that’s why! I have a job interview on Friday and my oath ceremony on Thursday 8am and I’m like can my recruiter use my old info to hire me and put me in the system?
You don’t get a new social security card if you are a lawful permanent resident, ( US citizen and lawful permanent resident have the same card not restriction ) unless it says Only for Work with DHS Authorization. They just update it from green card to US citizen
I think she said that because many people even if they’ve become permanent residents, they don’t update their SSN, so she’s advising to do so if you hadn’t done so when you became a green card holder.
I wonder what kind of issues not updating your citizenship status with Social Security can cause? I became US citizen 15 years but I haven't done this step yet. Actually, the reason why I'm changing my status now is because SS doesn't allow you to request a duplicate online if you're Not an US citizen (at least in my experience).
When i went to update my cityzenship info to the SSA I difnt have yo do all that, It was this 2022 AND i went straight yo the SSA in Nogales AZ when i gave then my certificate of naturalización they Made me sware the document was Real like the oath in Uscis office AND that was It 10 days later i got my new AND uodated card my passport card I went to a Consulate abroad AND after 3 weeks i got It ay my mom house in Hermosillo 6 months later i went again yo get my booklet passport AND i got It a month later i went to MDV office for a new drivers license AND i got It with my card yo vote
Thank you Maneesha. Could you please let us know if should we sign the Naturalization certificate or write the name in the section "Complete and true signature of holder"?
Thank you for the information… The US passport lose my Certificate of Citizenship and make a error on my birthday information…. I sended back with a copy of Certificate of Citizenship… I hope they accepted to make the correction
Thank you for your videos, they helped a lot. Just a question if you may. Before my Citizenship I applied for my daughter Form I-130, still pending, do I need to inform them about my naturalization? Thank you and waiting for more videos.
I just found your channel but realized very helpful and informative! Thank you! And I am amazed with your perfect English! How long have you lived in America? How long have you learned English? Kind of personal questions but you are inspiring me, I just wanted to learn. Thank you!
I'm a naturalized citizen sworn in in 1995, my certificate wasn't ready on swear in day and told they would mail to me and never did. I'm retire and social security office tells me I need original, so I needed to pay again for certificate $555 it been 5 months a still haven't received. In August of 2022 a tier 2 supervisor on the phone admitted to me that on the his computer it showed it was never mailed to me, but still made me pay $555 again. What bullies they are. The least they could of done was expedite, but know just wait and wait.
I like your videos and i hope that you will also feature about " US citizen to petition a married daughter with children". What category and how long is the waiting time. Thanks
Thank you Maneesha Mukhi for explaining these steps in such a simple way. We recently became citizen through naturalization and our son who is 17 automatically became the Citizen through us. We are going to apply for the Passport for all 3 of us at the same time and I was wondering how the original document submission will work. For e.g. for my Passport application, I need to submit my Original Naturalization certificate. Also, at the same time my son would also require my Naturalization Certificate for his passport. So I wanted to know how it would work. Would they just require a photo copy of my Naturalization Certificate for his application. Thanks in advance!!
UPDATE : Giving a quick update if any one is looking for an answer . I went to USPS passport acceptance center and the agent accepted both mine and my son's application at the same time. She sent my Naturalization Certificate (Original) with my passport and sent a photo copy of my Naturalization Certificate , photo copy of my drivers' license and my son's original birth certificate (NON US) for his application.
Thanks for the video.❤ My 1 year old son Just got here with a green card after I became a us citizen. I’m I qualified to apply for us passport for him? Thanks 🙏🏻
Been a Green card holder since 2013. I have my N-400 interview Nov 9th, once I get my citizenship, does my wife automatically get citizenship just like my kids under 18 ? I also have a 20yr old son, does he need to apply the normal way?
I couldn’t change my name during my interview because it would delayed my case. Here in Luisiana they don’t have many naturalization ceremonies a year. I married before my interview and I would like to change my last name to the last name of my husband.
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I tried to type and fill out the DS-11 pdf form, but the formatting seems to be messy. I will try to fill out the web based DS-11 now. Filling out by handwritting can be prone to errors, so I try not to use the paper version. I am excited to be applying for my new passport.
I was able to make an appointment in NJ in 2 days, went to the office and there was nobody there,I was in and out in 10 min. Didn’t have to send any documents.
My goodness, YOU are FANTASTIC with your explanations, so meticulous and in great, clear details; THANK YOU😊. Are YOU an immigration attorney yourself? Please let me know, I live in Massachusetts and do need legal help with my case, would love to pay you a visit. Thank YOU!
Question: If I apply for my children’s (below 18 years) US Passport , and choose not to get their Certificate of Citizenship, are my children going to have any issues in the future? Officer at USCIS did say , I don’t need to have my children’s Certificate of Citizenship as the US Passport alone will do. Need your suggestions, what difference does it make to have Certificate of Citizenship if children already have US Passport. Thank you!
I came to US on September/2/2019, as my wife applied for me and she is permanent resident, is it true that I can apply now as am about to complete 3 years ? Thanks
Hi I became a citizen now but I've been working for 18 years with a different social security number my question is ... Can I get all those 18 years taxes paid to my new social security??? Thanks
I just upgrade my social in Ct in person and all they took was the naturalization certificate took a copy hand it back and also i did a walk in appointment . I hate when they asks for original documents because I send my baby birth paper for a passport and did not get it back when I called they told me it was in the package I had to repay for a new birth paper.
Do not get your passport first unless you are in a big hurry, the social security office and bureau of motor vehicles will need to see your original naturalization certificate. They will not accept copies.
I have not received my oath ceremony latter yet it’s been 40 days now and they said they were going to send it to me within 30 days and it’s been over 30 days. what can I do?
I had sponsored my adult children and it was approved. Since their receipt date is 10/30/2017 we are still waiting. My question is should I let NVC know of my status and let them upgrade the cases or is it better and quicker continue procesing on my green card status?
As soon as - the day of - your oath ceremony, go and update your driver’s license and register to vote. The next day go visit the SSA, and only ONLY THEN apply for a passport. You need the certificate of naturalization for everything but they just check it. At the SSA, check your record including your mother’s maiden name- the SSA had chopped off the last two letters (long name). The passport application - request an appointment with a post office that can handle an expedited first time application WITH photography service. Why? Because you don’t want a bored 16 year old clerk at a pharmacy to mess up your application by taking a picture that gets rejected.
when you said "update driver's license" did you mean to update my citizenship status in the DDS account online? or do I need to go to DDS and let them know in person?
Thanks Maneesha for the information. I am applying online for my kid under 18 but UCIS asks for citizen mother info who is not citizen yet. But I can't leave it blank because USCIS asks for providing. Please help me?
please, i have a question. I got married in 2019 in Nigeria, and I petitioned for my wife in 2019. She was documentarily qualified as of 18 of August 2020. She just came in on September 15th of this year. so my question is, when is she going to be qualified to file for citizenship? is it after 3 years of coming in or after 5 years of coming in?
Hi I became a citizen in2016 I did the passport and social security, since then my US passport has expired and so has my ID. Also, my original citizenship certificate with birth certificate has been lost. Now I need to renew my ID in texas. What do you recommend I do?
Thanks Maneesh’s. I have become a LPR recently. When should I apply for citizenship.? Is it after I complete 5 yrs or just before I complete 5 years? How long does it take to approve naturalization application?
First of all, thank you for all the information; it has been very helpful. Hi, my name is Laura. I am a little confused I recently become a citizen, I have 2 children 16 and 17 what should I apply for them: US Passport or file the N-600 form.
Hello! While you do share your status when you apply for a license, you don't have to inform the DMV when your status changes from green card to U.S. citizen.
When you apply for a new drivers license and you answer yes that you are a US citizen you will need to provide proof of that, yes your Naturalization certificate and SS is what you will need to show at the DMV.
