Rule #1 - From R/C boat Hobby - Never run your ESC and waterlines with the rest of your electronics. Electronics should always be in a separate compartment. In addition, keeping your heat radiating esc in with your batteries wrapped in foam is doing no favors for either the batteries or the esc. You are asking for a fire hazard with esc if it blows and I've seen quite a few go up in smoke.
Otherwise this truly is an awesome project. I very much enjoy watching the content. Another tip is to play with props for better performance. You'll get more speed, lower amp pull, and better battery life.
Keep up this project! Best attemp for diy kayak electric motor set up I have seen so far! Congrats 👏
You are first you-tuber that talks a lot, but none of it is full of nonsense and fake enthusiasm. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to document! You are doing great!
+kozinator Wow, thanks brother!
If you end up producing these I’d be very interested. Love watching this process!!!
I don’t even kayak. I just love watching your content. Nice work man.
+Jacob B. Thanks Brother! Happy to have you here!
Whoa. RUclips usually brings up BS videos but this one I’m thankful for. This is awesome!!
I can't wait till the end of this set up. Do your best dude 👍
I absolutely love this series of videos, I just got out of racing rc a few years ago and recently started researching these bixpy/torqueedo setups and was just wasn’t understanding why the performance was so bad, I’m super stoked to see someone using parts from the rc industry and a little machining know how to truly build a performance e-drive for our beloved kayaks. I should have 2 brand new crescent kayaks showing up any time now, if you would like to try your finished prototype on them I would absolutely be game! I’m in the north Louisiana area. By your hat I’m assuming you’re in the east Texas area where I grew up. If this sparks your interest, just let me know.
+Jake Wallace Heck yes, we are close. Let's go fishing!
thegoodoftheland22@gmail.com
Jake Walace what do you mean by bad performance?
Low speed, low range?
martijn verschuren yes, mainly the low speed, when rc switched to brushless motors and lipo batteries, the power went through the roof!
@@jakewallace5591 rc is a completely different market than that of small displacement boat owners.
Big Lipo packs are not being used in commercial products for a reason.
High rpm e-motors dito.
Most kajak and canoe owners want to go further rather than beyond the hull speed of they're small boat.
It can be done but at what cost and fore whom?
+martijn verschuren I personally don't see my self blasting around the lake on a kayak but it is nice to have and adds another dimension to the sport. Same thing goes with a long range pack. It will be near impossible for me to run it out in a day but it's nice to have all that extra power at the ready. One thing that I was not expecting was the added safety of having the extra speed. There have been several occasions where I have had to power through a big wake or nail it to avoid a rude boater. It's nice to have and now that I have it I feel I need it.
Wow 2 more motors coming and great explanation of how the kayak works @TheGoodOfTheLand
In any aspect of life I say 80% less than these absolutely necessary details and everyone I’ve ever known constantly says “don’t overthink it”
Wow thats impressive that its plaining very cool @TheGoodOfTheLand
Oh man this motor got so much reserve :) My jet drive comes tomorrow, i also ordered a even lighter kajak 18kg should be even faster, i am so excited how fast it will be when its ready and how well this jet unit will perform. Will definetly record the whole build and load it up when i am ready.
Thank you for sharing your process!!! This is the coolest series and has me completely hooked. I wanted the new torqeedo 1103 for my hobie pa14, but it’s too expensive for what you get. THIS is what I want to do instead. Can’t wait to build my own!
I’d be more than happy to contribute some $$ for the time you’ve spent testing and developing. Ready for that next vid!!!
Dude I will totally buy one now! I know your still in R&D, I’m willing to wait.
Great "teaser" ending brother! Inquiring minds gotta know!!!!! LOL
I kinda figured 35 minutes was long enough 😉
Very nice meter guage justin @TheGoodOfTheLand
**Jaw on Floor** Dayum this project is so cool! The zen I got around 3:45 lowered my blood pressure. Thanks for sharing!
Great update video Justin @TheGoodOfTheLand
Wow Justin I LOVE THIS PROJECT🙂👍👍 Looking forward to the next exciting installment..Devon UK.
Just two words: Freaking awesome.
+Ron Edmon Thank you!!
What could you do for a guy in a electric power chair ( wheel chair) I would love to have more speed and or more range ,
The possibilities are only limited by your wallet!
Even just using some good e-skate parts could get you 25mph with 50 mile range
@@crfsikness you forgot the just kidding emoji
I saw on a power-chair forum that you could change batteries to get a few more mph but you might see a significant gain in range. I also talked to my electrician Brother and he was saying that in order to keep it reliable I'd have to get new motors too and those aren't cheap.
@@crfsikness 6
another nice video. Please keep in mind how you could make this usable in saltwater. I would be interested in getting offshore quicker and being able to use higher speed trolling lures for Ono (Wahoo). Mahalo
Just use a trolling motor
@@gsppuffer except he was cracking along as about 13/14 mph I’ve yet to see a trolling motor that will do more than 5/6 mph
I submerge my LIPO batters all the time.
Leave them submerged too. While operating.
ESC and batteries hate heat. Even a peletier cooler would help, along with a smaller additional fan inside the electronics box.
YOU SHOULD USE MINERAL OIL FOR YOUR COOLING AS IT doesn't conduct electricity which well keep it from shorting things out when your system fails during research great build keep up the good work, alaska usa
I am in the middle of making hydrofoil with very similar controller set up(sealed water circulation) i have a flipsky 75/300 to go with the 65161. Got multiple props to try. Got a AK Durable supplies trek foil with carbon fiber mast. It is a 2000 wing which is huge. 3' mast and wing is about 3' wide. Should lift very easily 😉 got a beautiful board that local guy made. It's big but will go good with big wing and extra weight from battery and motor system i hope. Deck is 75L i think. 5'2" Everything cf. I will share videos when i get in the water😁 thanks for sharing. I will be sure to check vesc water connections and use clamps 😉 i got a little pump to circulate closed water system. Got a flipsky vx3 controller and multiple 14s batts. 25ah, 40ah and some 12s. I have Buffalo river in my back yard but riding down at Buffalo NY harbor (inner and outer) on lake Erie is my goal 😁
computer parts. reservoir with flow control pwm pump so you can ramp it up as the cooling requires. should be simple. worth a look if you havent already
And already runs on DC so easy conversion
Maybe, if you'd used Distilled Water (flushed the system, too!), your Batteries and ESC would NOT "Short-Out"...?
(Pure H2O is a good insulator).
I have a Titan (pedal powered), and am designing and fabricating a trolling motor, to take the place of the "pedal-power pack". Steering will still be by rudder, and it'll have a hand control on the Starboard Gunnel (like a "Real Power Boat" has). 5 forward/3 reverse speeds, and be able to "kick-up" like the peddle assembly does.
Finally got a "Speedometer" on the Titan... A Lowrance Hook/2-7, with sideview and all (I can Find the fish, but can't make'em BITE!). Haha!
Get a PWM switch set up, you will kick yourself later if you dont
Can’t wait for the final product!! I’ll have that thing shoved in my PA 14 cassette so fast... can’t wait to scoot past my buddy that normally flys by me on the way there and back 😂
I am so glad I found this... I am putting together a build for an electric Kayak and was trying to decide on a Torqeedo or just a MinnKota
Wonder how good this system would work on a power boat. Maybe with 2 or 3 motors.
I hate it when a seller or a manufacturer will not stand behind their product and honor their warranty. I do understand it was the seller that told you thanks for the money but no help hopefully maytech will come through for you. Keep up the great work, This is a great series of videos I want the next one now. LOL
+nashguy207 Thanks Brother!
Im placing my money on one of the Magnets coming apart on the Rotor . Cant wait to see the new Motor and ESC .
That lake looks amazing! The kayak seems extremely fun. I'm hoping that the manufacturer will stick by their product, have faith. Loving this series, especially your excitement with it 😁
Ohhh Yeahhh, You Lost Some Magnets In Motor, Epoxy Them All In Good Before Using In The Water Again!!! LOL
This channel and project is GREAT...cant wait to see the options at the end so I can throw one on my Bonafide..
Justin, you are definitely on to something very cool. Really enjoying these videos. Gary
+Old Iron Machine Works Thanks brother! Learning more every day!
So far this is what I'm considering
- using that KV360 motor
- using the prop also
- wiring 36v 40Ah (12s8p)
- motor is placed midhull with deep drop feel free rudder.
- speed controller
- wireless battery life check box
- 1/5 scale servo and piston to drop and lift motor
- still figuring out cooling if needed
Target is 4-5mph and long enough life for 6-10 miles offshore (25 total miles area) with emergency bank life left.
Been watching all your videos. Some multiple times lol. Anything I'm forgetting?
15000 watts and 24 volts thats 619.835 amps thats nuts 😳 wow is it a 3 phase motor @TheGoodOfTheLand
Gitter done . Im buying for my own project..cant wait for the final product
I appreciate these videos you've been making. I've used some of your ideas for different kinds of mounts and stuff like that but I tried the electric route with the Newport vessels torqeedo style motor and I found that the real issue is you're just never gonna get a lot of range out of them. I tried 150 watts of solar panels to keep the batteries going longer, but with 2- 24 v 40 ah li po batteries(not cheap) it just doesn't go very far. So what I ended up doing was getting a Honda 2.3 horsepower outboard motor put it on the back of my Recon 120 and I get about 60 miles of range with a 3 gallon tank on the back, even at $5/ gallon it's a cheap and dirty alternative for people just want them get out there and go long distances at about 5 knots. I use a homemade Norwegian tiller system push to go left and then pull to go right. I guess it's the analog alternative, no error codes with your throttle boxes I found with all the electrical connections with the batteries on the ocean just is fraught with pitfalls. I do commend your tenacity in trying to find some good solutions for the electric motor on a kayak ,keep up the good work
its funny, because i was literately going to save up 3 grand for an Epropulsion the spirit 1.0 plus Cost = 1k without battery
with 1 battery adds 1k to price = 2k
with 2 battery's adds 2k to price = 3k
I rather spend 1-2grand on this setup and get better results , I can't wait until for finalize this build
Add some fishing poles to your hobby 👍🏼 cool stuff
I just bought an new raft pontoon boat. 12 1/2 foot long. My testing will be here shortly. To add up the cost of motor to whole set up. Somewhere around $400. No mod parts. Just using an old trolling motor. Still new. Only used once. Just need the setup for fishing. The run time should be from sun up to sun down forever with zero so called charge. I am useing an simple little solar panel I had hooked up into the system. Normal AGM lawnmower battery for now. My testing so far. 40% power. No battery drop. Oh well. Not posting it to RUclips, ect. Just going fishing. Enjoy yours. Take care.
Love the video's. I'm in hawaii and fo alot of offshore fishing and wild love to try a setup out on the ocean...
I have an inflatable pontoon fisher. Do you think this will work for this, and if so how would you install to the front that pulls instead of push? Mine doesn't have a basket mount on the back.
4000 watts at 24 volts is 165.28 amps that's nuts 😳 @TheGoodOfTheLand
for your struggling at start on your motor is your min_command of your transmitter, if you can up it until good start vibes, or try if haven t got min_command of your transmitter up your trim throttle until the limit of start 😉
I would love for you to make this a full product because I want it but I wouldn’t know where to start 😂
Dude, check your wake! 🤣 Great series
That trim issue...you should totally hunt up an old Wilderness Ride 135. Great mix of stability/speed/payload and the seat can be moved fore or aft like more than a foot with just a strap adjustment.
Okay 1: awesome build/video 2: can’t wait for the final build. Please make it detail and simple to follow along. 3: are you calves really huge or is that an optical illusion? Lol freaking massive calves bro. 4: Are you familiar with autonomous drones? My kayak is RC right now but I’m looking to make it autonomous with a pixhawk flight controller.
By your description of the motor, it sounds like it’s an electronically commutated motor. These all do that little stutter on start up. Not a bad thing
that vessel looks like it came from WATERWORLD
Looking good Justin lots of fun wish we lived closer.
Thanks Brother!
Question as far as have you tried jet board propulsion that isn't close to weeds it's almost at the water horizon of the boat. for directional either you have a trip rudder or directional prop control.
Great stuff man! Thank you.
Any plan of putting it in the market? You have such amazing talent!
Really comprehensive...wow! I got a LiFePO4 battery for my FUN8 motor 6years ago and it is heavy for 48V! That one time it went dead at the beach and I had to pedal it. I need to get more ambitious. I wonder what it would take to get my old SeaRay 19 footer going? Your research is Amazing!
You should try using the bottom end of a small outboard motor.
I have been working on a similar project using drill batteries.
I have a 12 foot aluminium v bottom boat I wold love to do this too.. it would be amazing lol
How about if you mount the ESC on top of your Motor shaft and run the wires to the battery longer that would let your ESC cool get one with a fan and waterproof spectrum make some good ones you would have to run your control wires longer. Also, I would put it on a RC remote control to watch everything and get it set right first 😉😀👍🤙 I have the same problems with my planes ✈️ I don’t like to go higher than six cell You can always adjust the pitch on the prop to pull more amps or less amps
You need to mount the esc to the inside of the boat, check out alien power system or MGM Controllers for a better one.
MGM has series ESC up to 1000 amps
I love your energy. I want to make an item you lay in the water with and it will pull you. Not sure what motor I need.
Love your videos. I have been thinking of something like this but in a small boat. For more accurate speed and range I buy cheap GPSs on an auction site and have them mounted on many things for that purpose.
I trust the motor you're using all day long.
They use these motors in those foil lift board kit things
in time 21:50 , replaced with a bigger longer bottle. More water works more effective to drop out temperature. Also add a heat sink around the bottle. Add also small amount of coolant to the water.
Why did you use a nozzle to suck the water behind the propeller to cool your power controller ?
I think what you're doing is Absolutely Awesome
Where did you get the the screen that gives you all the information? I setup a old Sears 20 trolling motor because it fits right through the hole in my hobie. I just want to know how long I have remaining when I am out fishing. Tks
I'm very interested in what you're developing, this tool will open up way more water to explore. Are you planning on selling a complete kit or parts list?
i have the kit by "HammerHeadKayaking " on my Pescador Pro 100 ,it gives the use of a Kayak a whole new dimension, I will be watching closely here. ( distance /battery life)
I'm also interested in purchasing one if you will be selling them
Where did you get the battery monitor?
Justin, try a tiny radiator for computers and a brushless pump to cool ESC
Oh yes. Bigger motor an more battery power.....i can't wait
Excited to see the next video and also to find which motor you have got in mind for saltwater application!
Do you think that creating a large battery pack of 18650 lithium ion cells would be a viable alternative to the lipo packs you're using Justin? I am sort of assuming that's what they use in the pack for the bixpy but I could be wrong. Loving these videos anyway thanks!
+Jim D So I just recieved my batteries and they are awesome. I will be making an 18650 pack for one of the yaks but this pack is going to be a monster lipo pack. 120 8000mah lipos. It's a beast.
@@TheGoodoftheLand wow that sounds epic! There must be a bit of mass in 120 of those dude. I looked on that discount battery site in your links for those 8000mah packs but could not see them. I'm waiting for more of your superb videos before spending money on kit, but meanwhile am harvesting good 18650 cells from dead laptop packs so I can assemble a good battery brick or two for my project.
have you thought about a bigger prop or more pitch? it seems like you have the torque
We have the torque the problem is high amps. Need gear reduction so she can hit fullbrpm without pulling so many amps. Sounds crazy but in this setup we actually would get more speed out of a smaller prop.
Maybe time to install a Lowrance fishfinder to monitor your speed. :)
+Tim Percy Kayak Fishing Yes! I was looking at Raymarine. What are your thoughts on who makes the best with side imaging?
@@TheGoodoftheLand I like my Lowrance units. I currently use the Lowrance Elite Ti2 with 3 in 1 Active Image transducer. I've never really had to play with any of the settings...they work very well out of the box. The touchscreen feature makes them very user friendly. They are easy to customize what information you want to display on your screen ie. speed, depth, water temp., volt meter, etc.
+Tim Percy Kayak Fishing Thanks! I will give it a look!
Add a solar panels for canopy and for shade and charge batteries
Where do you buy a propeller that holds in front of the motor
loving this!!! Im also building a kayak motor! its loud?????? ugh!!!!!
product claims are usually are usually sent to mfg. a decent retailer will in some cases aid you in filing your clam>
Axial bearing neede mayb? Nice project! Just a friendly tip, it will be hard maintaining the propeller happy once you increase rpm which is what more power means with that motor, due to cavitation. I would go for a solution that holds the rpm under 4 or at least 5krpm. I build marine bldc:s for a living fyi. Our 10kW direct drive is quite mych bigger due to this. Keep it up. I would love to see this work out for you!
Ulysses is one of the best apps for MPH. It also maps where you've been and maps your speed along the track you've taken.
I need one of these.
if you want a better batt pack but a crashed or prius and take the pack apart
I think you can just buy the battery’s from it.
@@aaronhayden1780 ya maybe but i have seen then sell for 3 and 400 on Copart's
great that you’re hard on it and want to find the weak points. that way when I get the set up for my kayak I know I can beat on it a little be without worrying. can’t wait for the final options and to see if you’ll be selling diy kits/parts
I was thinking about putting it on a canoe as well for the option to bring friends and to use as a cheap boat motor alternative. keep up the good work
So I guess Michobby doesn't want any repeat or new customer business...good to know...I will most certainly take my money elsewhere.
Glad the manufacturer is stepping up...hope you keep us informed on that...I am curious on how they will fix the loose nipples. *giggle*
Cooling systems are something I am investigating for some of my projects so I really appreciate everything you are sharing!
You could build a cooling plate in aluminium with water channel that goes under water under the kayak somewhere or even build the motor mount bracket with embedded water channel and use the lake to cool your recirculating water.
+Frédérik Dubois Bingo! Your getting closer! Add some peltier and you got it!
@@TheGoodoftheLand i run lipo`s for my motor, and the biggest problem is the termal cutouts in the battery, tried 20ah, moved up to 40ah, little problem. 92f sunny, gotta protect em !
In Michigan I would have to register it if I add any type of gas or electric motor. Very cool, but defeats my purpose of not having to register my boat.
some kayaks are displacement hull.. for instance . hobie proanglers.. i had a 6hp on it.. 6-7mph :)
Jet kayak....electric.
I want to head up some rivers with shallow rocky areas.
So a jet is required.
Next project ? ?
Why Can't You Build A Couple Rope-Weed Cutter Blades on Shaft In Front Of Your Prop? Like On Shaft Drive Ocean Boats... LOL Thanks
You are awesome!!👏👏👏👏😎
i love your work i m searching it for my new inflatable kayak 😉
You need to hit up Flukemaster on RUclips. I bet he’d prototype one for you in bass tournaments. At least it would be worth checking into. Loving these build series videos!
I’d also say look into a Bluetooth gps antenna to get better accuracy for your trip mileage and speeds. Been looking into one so I can map my farm for spreading seed and fertilizer, phone antenna just isn’t accurate or sensitive enough.
I think my kayak hull would be perfect for this. Its a pelican catch 100. The hull really is very speed boat like there's not rear taper like a traditional kayak hull.
You could always run an electric skateboard ESC. Some of those are monsters
Just found the series. Nice research you got going on.
+Jorge P. Thanks brother! Check out my "stories" on my main page for the next build! Its awesome!
