If you've ever drunk Spanish wine, I'm sure you've heard of Rioja wine. It's without a doubt Spain's most famous wine region. In this video, I drink three wines (all made with tempranillo) from iconic wineries to help you understand the region a little better. I discuss the flavours and aromas of each wine (or vino, as we call it here in Spain), and also talk about the difference between modern and traditional Rioja.
And who am I? I'm James Blick, co-founder of Devour Tours and a certified sommelier, trained by WSET, one of the most famous wine training centres in the world!
Also, I also answer some really common questions about Rioja, namely:
- Are all Rioja wines Tempranillo?
- Is Rioja a red wine or a white wine?
- What is the grape in Rioja wines? (Hint: it's tempranillo!)

Question of the day: What Spanish wine region do you want me to cover in my next wine video? Answer in the comments below! 👇👇👇👇👇
Galicia!
Great idea. I love the Galician whites, and -- even more -- the Galician reds that are coming out!
Which Galician reds would you recommend? I have friends coming for a visit soon...What would you give them to try?
Hi Cris - try the fantastic reds from Adega Algueira (www.adegaalgueira.com/index.php?language=en) ... Be ready for lighter styles than we're used to in Spanish wine. Which means when they're good, they've very elegant.
The British Columbia Canada Region.
Spectacular presentation - good job !
Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful examples,
Thanks for your comment. Enjoy!
Thank you for this great presentation James! I'd love to watch more videos like this one for the not so well known Spanish regions. I've been looking for this kind of content for years (both in English and Spanish) and there's not enough quantity nor quality here in RUclips unfortunately. Me alegro de haber descubierto tu canal. Gracias y ¡salud!
Loved the video I plan to visit Spain mid next year and I’m getting some wine knowledge in before! Would love to see more videos in detail of flavors what would be good to pair and hey maybe even some sangria taste tests. I subscribed and will go through your videos
great vid, thank you!
Your enthusiasm is contagious. Tengo muchas ganas de volver a mi querido Espana!
Great video!! I’m planning my trip to Spain and enjoying your channel very much! Please a video about Cava!!!!
Ok!!
We enjoy your videos and instagram stories. Thanks!
Thanks Nag!
Great information!
Another great video! Love Rioja
Thanks so much - glad you liked it!
Planning to visit Spain soon and would love to take a trip with you!!
Excellent stuff indeed!
thanks for the knowledge sharing , i like to explore food and drinks , your video helps a lot . i am going to seville cordoba and madrid in a few days , can't wait to try out some tapas and vermut , cava that you recommend. cheers .
Wow what a great video, my fathers love of Rioja passed on to me and both my grown up sons and their families love the stuff. Wish I was there.
Great love of wine..I'm learning wines for work
WOW! Thank you James. You just clarified what Rioja wines are all about is a fabulous short video. Thank you for boasting the Tempranillo cultivar, one that the average consumer does not know well(at least here in Canada), but once tasted, they realize the unique beauty and interesting aromas that pour out of this grape and the Rioja region. A well kept secret that needs no hiding.
How do the South American Tempranillo's compare?
Thanks for your comment Leslie, and happy you enjoyed the video! Rioja is certainty a fabulous region, and tempranillo a wonderful grape. I haven’t tasted any SA versions - you’ll have to try them and let me know!
What Rioja’s do you see in Canada?
Nice one 👍
Great videos! Will definitely join one of your tours on my trip to Seville.
Can't wait to have you along!!
Awesome video! I hope to do a tour or tasting with your company soon!
Hi James,
Love your video (watching on a cold, overcast night in Bristol UK - I am, however drinking a Spanish sherry - amontillado :-) ; I don't have a Rioja to hand). You may perceive I'm a fan of your videos and all things Spanish! I'd love to try these wines. You asked about a wine region: how about the wines made on the island of Lanzarote - very unique.
Thanks a lot for your passionately informative videos.
Gracias
Tony
Thanks for being such an avid viewer Tony. And yes - great idea.... the Canaries make fascinating wines. Noted!
Rioja wine is our absolute favorite! There are so many great ones, but we have an affinity for Rioja since Mike lived there for 2 years! Can't wait to get back to Spain and try some more wine regions!
Totally --- a great Rioja is wonderful. Living there would have been amazing!!
James: excellent lesson. Don't know a thing about Spanish wine and willing to learn. In the video you mentioned links as to where to buy the wines discussed but I could not locate them.
True Jack, I think I actually took them out. Where do you like? I'll see how I can help.
I am from La Rioja! Proud you like our wine.
Love it!!
Great vid and awesome tips! My favourite wine, like the flamenco aficionada I am, is sherry, of course. I'd love you to do one on this fascinating wine!
Consider it done, baby!
Hi James! I'm so thankful for your explanation! I'm a wine fan of 20+ years and there is so little that I understood about Rioja wine. The video was fun and informative.
My hubby and I are going to Madrid and La Rioja for the beginning of our three week honeymoon (then headed to Croatia for 2 weeks). We look forward to possibly doing one of your food tours in Madrid.
I would love to see videos on the small towns in Rioja.
THanks for that Michelle! I'd love to do a video of Rioja!
Me suscribo a tu canal ✌✌✌
Gracias Jacobo!
Love your videos.....my story was all about Rioja and visiting the south of Spain...that was until I discovered Albarino from the Rias Baixas region last summer....the perfect summer white ! More info on this delicious wine please.......and I'd love a little Spanish language thrown in too....that would be a great help for those of us wanting to do a little more than just order 'dos cervezas por favor !!!'
Sounds good. Will add to the list!
I have enjoyed watching your channel. I would like to learn more about Valdepenas wine region of La Mancha. I think I need to give that wine another shot. The first bottle I tried tasted a bit bitter for my palate.
Emploring the thumbs up was very sweet! I think that's the first one I've given, ever.. Sorry for any errors, not wearing my glasses.
Hi James , really good video's , bit a spanish wine lover in particular Rioja , looking forward to going in June , but such a pain to get to from bilbao airport
Two wines from Rioja, which are modern but not as much as SELA and RODA (SELA being the younger brother of RODA and RODA 1), have a very good value for money, both being affordable, but in excess of 93 points according to Robert Parker, are FINCA LA MONTESA and FINCA MARTELO and even the younger brother of this late one, FINCA SAN MARTIN. Finca Martelo belongs to La Rioja Alta S.A, based in HARO, but is a second winery located at La Guardia, in the RIOJA ALAVESA, the neighbouring province. Really outstanding stuff. FINA MARTELO retails for about 28 € in shops and FINCA LA MONTESA for about 14 € a bottle. Expect to pay 30% to 40% more and even up to twice as much in a posh restaurant.
Took a bicycle tour through Rioja country on my camino trip and had some grapes in a vineyard at 7:30 in the morning they were delicious
Love the video James, can you do wines from the Alicante region?
I am in love w/ garnacha! Can you cover Campo de Borja? 🍷🍷😊
Hola James.
Excellent vid... going to Barcelona next month to drink rioja and have some Jamon Iberico....currently drinking Baron De Ley grand reserva while watching ur vid
Salud! Exciting you'll be headed to BCN. Save a slice of jamón for me :)
Spain Revealed - James Blick
Lol... really excited for my Europe trip..i had to wake up @ 6am (my local time) to secure reservation @ Tickets.... hope they serve Riojas that u have recommended
Awesome! Let me know how it goes! They def. have Riojas - may not be the same ones, but they'll be good!
I want to explore all the Spanish wine regions, but yeah, you can only drink so much. I was in Malaga in September and tasted some excellent local wines, and even some sweet dessert wines that I liked. So, my suggestion is for you and Yoly to enjoy the beaches and mountains of Malaga Province! And sample your 3 favorites from DO Malaga and DO Sierra de Malaga. Next, how about Murcia? Not well known and what looks like an interesting province. And finally, the stunning next door neighbor to La Rioja: Navarra.
Great video. You should do a video about blue wine too. Blue wines seem to be a trend across Europe and most of them seem to come form Spain.
James please make the next video about Toro, I love Ribera del Duero and Rioja, but lately my favorite wines are from Toro.
Lovely, would have been nice if you had filmed this directly in Rioja, in bars on c/ Laurel in Logroño, for example. And not to forget: there is also Tempranillo Blanco ;-) !
The Priorat produces spectacular wines! The only other region besides Rioja with qualified status DOQ.
Priorat is one of my fave , not cheap but such an under rated region that slowly is making at hit around thew world.
Not really underated, many of the most expensive Spanish wines since the late 1990's are from PRIORAT, and they are known by winelovers around the World. An interesting cheaper alternative are the wines from MONTSANT, also from Catalonia.
Interested in Priorat, Rias Baixas & Txakolina 🍷👍🏻
Tempranillo is like Mali Plavac grape from Croatia it tastes much better each year it is aged ! Years ago my wife opened a bottle of 1992 Kastalet that I was saving for years and it was better than I ever tasted before !
For a future video maybe you could go to Trujillo's feria del queso. If you love cheese, you need to try Torta del Casar (featured in that fair in a lot of its variations because it is typical from Extremadura). Plus, Trujillo is a very beautifull village very close to Cáceres, which is also beautifull :)
Great video James , do you know of any wine tasting in Seville in Jan ??
Hi James- thanks for fabulous video...Spanish wine is our favourite yet we dont know an awful lot about it- so the more of these videos the better please! The nicest Spanish wine we ever had was from the Ribera del Duero region..in Galicia?..Would love you to try 3 wines from there and educate us!! Thank u!!
+twinkletoes800 Thank you for the comment. And consider it done! First thing to know is Ribera del Duero isn’t in Galicia - but I’ll save the big reveal for the video! Salud!
James Blick Brilliant- thanks so much! Oops about Galicia! - getting educated already, I love it😀! ¡Salud!
Interesting question :) The first thing you have to know, is that El Duero is one of the most important rivers in Spain, located in the Northwest. The matter is that this river go through many different regions inside the huge Spanish community of Castilla y León. But in this particular case, Rivera del Duero is attached to a very small part of this route.
The route of the river Duero has created loads of Spanish important wine brands, such as Rueda, Toro, Arribes... The thing is that, even though Rivera del Duero is not very known outside the Spanish borders, nowadays is undoubtedly the strongest competence of Rioja.
+Javier Sánchez Thanks for your comments - and you’re right Ribera is the next big region after Rioja!
Interested in learning more about the white wine grape varieties in Rioja.
Can you please go over the dryness or sweetness level like a pino noir vs. cabernet sauvignon type of dryness.
Te lo as rrecorrido todooo!! El vino es el mejor del mundo!!
Eso es!
I'm jealous you're in Madrid tasting the terrior. Cheers!
Don't be jealous! Come visit!
I'd love to see a survey of catalan wines! Greetings from the US
Great idea Austin! So many regions there! Will do!
James, could you please do a video on the wine and or foods of Santiago? Cheers
tondonia! the holy grail. try the white and the rosado.
Do u have a schedule for your la rioja wine tasting for the whole year? How many heads to form a group? Thank you!!
a wineregion that you should do is doc Cebreros near Madrid
Great wines James, how about Albariño?
Are there any medium bodied reds from Spain that you recommend?
The López de Heredia bodega in Haro is amazing, I keep going there and never have enough. Perhaps you can show the bodega in one of your videos? On the other side and the best example of modern bodegas is Campoviejo. Whilst their wines are decent albeit not the best Rioja, the bodega where they are made in Logroño is just stunning. Please check it out and visit it if you have not done it yet. Thanks and congratulations for your you RUclips channel!
I love Logroño! I've been to López de Heredia (would love to make a video), but not Campo Viejo. I've heard it's impressive though.
@@spainrevealed It is, make sure you visit it. And don't miss Calle Laurel in Logroño, my fave places in Spain for pintxos!
Group of 8 traveling to Spain in September. Staying in LaGuardia for three days. Any winery recommendations?
Hi, I didn’t see the links to purchase the wines.
Hi there, excellent videos, to be used during English lessons. Why don´t you make one about albariño, one of the best white wines in the world, according to Parker?
Great idea! On the (growing) list!
Artadi is one of the best.
Any chance of doing a piece about Ribera del Duero ?
Here you go! ruclips.net/video/59mgOZIt_T0/видео.html
Can you do Priorat, please?
i have one doubt,i need low alcohol content wine ,now my hydrometer reading is 1.090,so 2 day after my reading is 1.050 can i Change to secondary Fedamentation Or when the hydrometer reading comes to 0.999 only then change to secondary Fedamentation
.
Make a video about Brandy de Jerez
Priorat!
James, during a recent trip to Mexico City, I ran into some Spanish Whiskey. Didn't know Spain made whiskey. What can you tell us about that? Video Opportunity? Stay well, Danny in Fl.
Bodegas Escudero wines from rioja 😘🤌🏽
James do any Rioja’s have a particularly vanilla creaminess. I was in Spain years ago and I had fantastic wine and thought it may have been a Rioja but never really experienced it again.
Ps my taste buds may have been completely mistaken.
Vinos manchegos please!
Love that idea! Will do!
Very well selected offerings from Rioja but can you please check out the region of less that 20€ a bottle for those of us who are not Morgan Stanley or Lloyds of London brokers ?
Hmm I'm getting thirsty for some Spanish wine.
So am I!
Do some godellos or some wines from the Monterrei area...
Great idea Moises! On the list!
Galician wines are being missed hahah albariño, godello, treixadura, ribeiro...the thing is in the whole Spain the wine is amazing...
Sherry, Brandy and Cava please !!??
You said you would put links but I don’t see any. If you say you are going to put links, make sure the links are there.
Priorat please :)
What romanian wine is the most similar 🤔 to Tempranillo de Rioja?
jusforyouspainwineshopbacelorcityygnmyanmartherkythapaidagrepaidezawtunusavisa20241119datepaidwlovehekeyrtthaygnmynmarpaaid
Jumilla, please
Priorat, please!
OK! :)
I love wine but i get bad headaches because of nitrites or nitrares. Its some chemical they put in wines....my question is are these wines or are there spanish wines without these additives i am allergic to...
What does the grape look like?
Small and black from memory!
Ribera del Duero...
Not such a fan of modern, over-extracted wines and those with way too much new oak -- love LdH, of course! -- so would be more interested in any Spanish wine region which could be described as traditional or evocative of a sense of place. Know Spain makes a ton of wine in a modern style so not too sure what else would fit this bill there beyond Rioja. You should definitely do sherry. Maybe cava, txakoli and Basque and Asturian sidra.
Thanks for your comment! Lots of great Spanish wine that shows a sense of place. I'm starting to think of wines from the north-west... which are really a region to watch.
Thanks James! Know next to nothing about the wines of Galicia and would love to know more. FYI the NYT wine writer Eric Asimov has written recently about Godello, but I've never had it. www.nytimes.com/2017/08/31/dining/wine-school-godello-spain.html
+mrickling they’re famous for their whites up there, but the reds are really going to be a big deal in the coming years. Will cover north-west (including godello) soon!
cava my friend...
Done and done. And cava is a really fascinating "region" (if you can call it that), given it's all over the country. Plus the sparkling wine makers in Penedès are now making sparkling wine under a quality label called Clàssic Penedès, to distance itself from cava. Lots of things are afoot!
Garnacha or Grenache
Both!
Send me one bottle pls!
hah ok!
txakoli
Does Granada have anything interesting?
In terms of wine? Well, Granada is not a typical or traditional wine producing province, peopleo there would drink Rioja, Ribera de Duero, wines from Valdepeñas and Ciudad Real, in Castilla-La Mancha as well as Andalusian wines from Cadiz, Ronda and Malaga on top of Manzanilla from Sanluxcar de Barrameda and Sherry from Jerez de la Frontera. Now, you still can find wine produced in Granada, and it is always interesting to taste local wine.
Un saludo!
Muchas gracias.
I'd hate to drink with this guy.
Who was holding that camera. Making me sea sick
Spanish wines suck. Terrible !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I only like French and some from Australia.
Ok calvorota. You know more that all the experts in the world
