Spain Revealed - James Blick I’m vegan. It would be nice to have a video dedicated to asking for special needs/interest dining, or even restaurants/locations that are ADA friendly. I have found a large vegan/vegetarian community and venues in Madrid & Alcala de Henares. I believe there’s pretty good material that can make for an interesting video. This also gives discussion to Mision Abolista (anti-bullfighting) and other green-friendly initiatives that are growing in Spain. Gracias!

I am English and my husband is Spanish. We live on a very small island in the Canaries. I am going back to a video where you state that the Spanish do not say "please" and "thank you" much. My husband does not use those words in or out of the house. I say them often, and it is nice to see the lovely smiles I get from waiters and in shops. Maybe we should all say "please" and "thank you" more often, It brightens the working day of many people who may feel unappreciated! Many thanks for your videos. Hope you make many more!

  • @MattEdwards1

Something I've found as a beginner is this kind of scenario which I think would be great to see you act out and solve! Basically, just asking for water (or whatever) isn't normally the end of the conversation! There are some very common responses the answers to which would be so useful to learn and get used to! So, here's the problem that I always have in such simple scenarios as asking for, say, a coffee and a water. I pluck my courage up and say "Un cafe Americano y un agua por favor"....then the waiter/waitress will say something back which I won't catch and I'll have to resort to my single most-used Spanish phrase: "Lo siento pero no hablo Espanol!" Hehe :) I think being prepared for those kinds of situations will be hugely beneficial! Things such as "con gas?" or (as you mention in this video "botella" or "copa". This kind of thing happens to me ALL THE TIME! Lol 🙈😂. PS Keep up the fantastic content, my wife and I absolutely love Spain, not long returned from Christmas break in Malaga, and heading to Madrid in April, can't wait!

One other thing -- I've lived in Madrid 4 years now and have been afraid to try certain foods, because I didn't know what they were. I was studying there from January until early March when we had to leave (due to coronavirus) but all these videos are great and make me want to return so badly when all the chaos has calmed! My favorite thing about going out to tapas bars in Madrid was how my friends who didn't know much Spanish would try so hard to order and use the most literal translation and say "¿Puedo tener una copa...?" instead of "me pones una copa..." or "quería una copa..." as you suggested in the video. I speak Latin American Spanish I feel very confused about the Spanish in Spain it makes me nervous because that’s the mother country of Spanish, however it’s extremely different!? for instance from Mexico like when ask “Do you have”. In Mexico they say” tienes”. In addition , in Spain, most words have a
Lisp? Which we do not used in most Hispanic countries in Latin America. I’m nervous to use my Spanish in Spain now 😆🤪😁
    I will definitely give it a go!🥰

This was amazing. The accents was prefect. What I would now like is a more complete phrase formation as opposed to a command. Like "May I ...." "Where may I ...., How may I ...?" "Could you please ....direct me to?.... tell me how?...tell me where? Communication skills that can be used in & out of a restaurant. With repetition comes association & familiarity. Gracias!

Hi I'm Marion Monson and I'm studying culinary arts. Last year, I have graduated with my culinary diploma but I'm currently pursuing my degree as well. I love to find out different culinary cultures hands on because I want more knowledge of culinary cultures and their influences around the world and not just be a common local chef. I also passionate to share and teach people what i know and learned so one day either open a buisness or become an instructor.

I’m traveling to Spain the next couple days and I must say your videos are so entertaining and informative. I speak Spanish already from Mexico, but Spanish from Spain has its own uniqueness from its words! Some words are uncommon or flipped. This video cleared up some confusion! Thank you!! Love all your videos too

I love it when when non native speakers learn the language.

  • @sam.victor470

This is a really important and informative video, because (for native speakers of English especially), the Spanish language is chock full of 'false friends.'
Many words in Spanish that sound and even are, very similar to words in English.
However, these words often possess meanings equally or totally different.
For example: 'Menu'. La carta is correct, as the former actually pertains to 'menu del dia' - a sort of fixed price meal.
Or, 'listo', which correctly translated colloquially, doesn't mean a number of differing items, but is understood as 'pristine' - and so on.
Which, for all foreigners in Spain, is the best reason for practicing Spanish and talking to strangers. Acquirin knowledge and immersing in Spanish culture and everyday manners.

This is a great video. Now I know what "menú del dia" really means. I understood menú was the physical menu. I was laughing all through this video because of the woman in the background. She was having a good time too.
I am amazed as to how a guy from New Zeland ended up in Madrid having such good Spanish. Why not do a language video for people like me who have poor Spanish and want to travel to Spain.
Very informative video. Keep them coming.

I love chipirones in Madrid. I remember (fifty years ago) that you could go out a and chatos de vino cost between 3 and 5 pesetas (the peseta was 60- 70 to the dollar at the time) and it would cost less than a dollar a round with my friends and they always gave tiny little tapas with each one.
