I'd describe it as an "everyday" watch, or an "office" watch. It's dressy enough to work in an office setting, but not so dressy that it looks out of place in shorts and a polo/t-shirt. Also, with a date complication it adds practicality as an everyday watch in the office. While some people might always reach for a phone for the date, I have always worn a watch, so the watch is always my go-to for the date.
This watch is worn by a man who drives an Audi to work at the office. His name isn't on the building, but he has a reserved parking space. His title is vague, assistant to the regional manager. His wife bought it for him as a birthday present. The only other watch he owns is a two-tone Seiko he was gifted on his wedding day in '94. He doesn't wear it, though, because the battery died. His friends are mildy impressed over beers as he tells them, "this Hamilton doesn't need batteries!"
I’m in love with the blue/cream dial version of this watch. Just pulled the trigger on one. I love just about everything about design choices on both the blue & black. I would classify this as a “transformer”, ready to take on any setting, context, outfit, etc. Business casual.
Yip, me too, I find it strange how Hamilton is dumped on almost as much as TAG. I own both Hamiltons and TAGs and love them both to bits. My only issue with Hamilton is that I wish they would make more smaller watches. My 40mm Intra-magic auto chrono is a perfect size for me.
That watch is flat out the best looking watch I have seen on your channel. It has a classic 50's two tone look. Simple but effective. Thanks for showing me my next watch.
I love this piece, Bruce! I would classify it as pure “Mad Men” era leisure watch. I see an open collar tropical shirt, Bermuda shorts, a pair of loafers without socks and Wayfarers 😎 with this one. Super cool!
I agree with your sentiments at the end about no bracelet. For just under 1k for a 3 hander, a bracelet IMO is a must. I believe the older version of the Intramatic had an option for one.
For me the white/black 'tuxedo' style version is basically an ideal office watch. Suitable for semi-formal occasions but not very formal ones. The blue/white version is more of a leisure, 'weekender' type watch that goes well with jeans and relaxed clothing.
I’m a huge fan of Hammy and their history. You get a lot of watch here with the 25% off code. But for the category where this fits is it’s close to what the Japanese used to term the salary mans watch. The Seikos from the 1960s exemplify this and this watch seems to be a tribute to that concept.
You are probably right, but not a lot of romantic appeal to the 60s era Japanese (or American) salary man. One pictures long commutes by train into crowded Tokyo, or New York, 3 martini lunches, getting home just in time to watch the evening news. Not exactly license to kill stuff. Still, it is an attractive every day watch, that might work better on a different strap.
I have one of these incoming and I'm blaming you and Rob for making me do it. This definitely falls in dress category for me. Looks gorgeous and can't wait to put it on. Only thing I wish this had was a display casback, if the movement looks as good as your overlay.
Just ordered the Khaki Field Auto. Black dial. 20% off...38mm.... yaassss .... thanks for all the vids Bruce. You're really working hard! Seems like you're putting out a daily video almost.... and it's a pleasure. Appreciate it matey 👌
I've heard the term "day watch" used to describe this style. Time and date, minimal or nonexistent design flourishes, maybe not the first choice for any given occasion but still works well enough as an all-rounder for daily wear. It reminds me of watches that were commonplace in the 50s and 60s.
Can be worn as an everyday watch, sport watch, casual dress watch, all the way up to semi formal dress watch. Have one love it, it is a special piece from Hamilton.
You said it right off the bat when you made the Seiko comparison. This definitely looks like their American Jazz Age riposte to the Cocktail Time. Not a dress watch, not a sports watch. But a nice dressy, elegant, stylish "going out" watch, with unique, historical design elements.
I found it in a shop yesterday. I was so excited about it since I saw a picture on internet a few weeks ago. Well I was very disappointed when I saw it in person. It's an OK watch, but could have been so much better. Prices of Hamilton are increasing quite a lot ... for the price of the watch, at least put a decent AR, decent strap, display back to see their modified movement. Also, it looks really big because of the size of the dial ! 40 mm for that type of watch kills it. 38 would be perfect (but on that last point it is very subjective).
Great video thanks ! Just ordered mine in blue. I’ve had the Chrono (42 first version), but I really appreciate this new release : lug to lug (46,2) and thickness (near 11) are far better for an everyday wear !!!
This is a wonderful watch! I believe that you have changed your view on these entry level Swiss watches. Your channel has progressed to a little higher end taste and that is totally fine. Our tastes change with time and we begin to critique different things that would not bother us before. I believe that this is a great vintage inspired everyday watch. Has a date complication and can dress up to be dressy. I do agree with the need for more brushing but also it’s still coming in at a great price. As always a great review and great opinions.
I have a Tissot with the Powermatic 80 movement. It is a 2924 slowed down to 21,600 bph. For that tradeoff, it has an 80 hour power reserve. I picked it up used. After servicing, it runs within COSC specs. I am fine with a slower movement, as long as there are benefits, and lo reduction in accuracy. Imwould say that watch is a dressy sport watch. Like others, I,worry less anout the classification and worry about whether or not I like it!
I own a Hammy field watch, but I’m a minister so I needed something a bit dressier that would go with my blacks, but also look nice under a white cuff - but not too uppity for a polo and khakis. This watch is a solid all-rounder, with a pleasant vintage vibe. Thanks for the review! BTW: I appreciate reviews that do a wrist shot, along with the model’s wrist size. It helps give perspective when we can’t see the watch in person.
P.s. Hamilton pilot 36mm... lovely watch too... I'm really loving this brand ... something I can enjoy without having to save for five years and no waiting lists (yet!)...
I know it's a different design, but for me this is like a more affordable and better wearing (shorter lugs) alternative to the Longines Heritage 'tuxedo' 38.5mm. Sort of a blend of 60's dress watch with that 40's art deco look. Legible, crisp, solid, slightly sporty but without the useless chrono complication.
Hamilton brings it for the money and some models especially the field/military themed pieces are awesome regardless of price. I regret selling my Field Auto 38. Bought my step father an Open Heart Jazzmaster and he loves it. Very good looking watch with a suit or business casual. 80 hours!
Bruce the 21000 bph aside this is a great watch for me super comfortable and love the blue dial at the price point this sporty day driver is really a do everything watch value wise I am happy ordered a Forstner Beads of Rice Stainless Steel Watch Bracelet × 1 20mm to try on this watch thanks for the time stay well...nice video
This is a very cool watch. Like the Tissot Visodate which was originally offered only leather strap and then later on mesh, this Hamilton will come on mesh in a year.
Great video Bruce. To answer your question, I would classify this as an Office watch. I stole that terminology from Bill Sanders of the WatchArtSci channel, but I think it describes this watch perfectly.
I'm sold.. I was looking for an everyday watch to replace my Tissot Visodate. I liked the Blue/white dial but actually, the more I look at this the more I like it. It's so beautiful. Not sure where to put it either. The dial almost looks like one of the seconds dial from a Rolex Daytona. I think it will wear more on the dressy side but it will equally work with a rally type strap. It kind of hits the sweet spot for me for a "do it all" watch. Santa get out your wallet because I have my heart set on this one
The Hammy Khaki Field is arguably one of the best value in Swiss watchmaking. Moreover, Their intramatic chronograph is absolutely fantastic in that same color way. I would in fact wear this watch as it is very proportional and in my humble opinion also very versatile. In blue you could wear it anywhere, really. Although you may as well not even bother heeding my advice as I am a bit of a fanboy for the brand...
I just bought this watch with the mesh bracelet - first watch for everyday use. I really like the simple and clean design, and while the panda chrono is fantastic, this was less than half the price at the moment. This review really helped provide a detailed review of it - thanks! Looking at straps to vary the daily look - what straps do you think would go well with this style? Planning on a medium brown leather, maybe a wine red leather. Could this pull off a canvas/sailcloth strap also, maybe light gray or tan? I'm new to watches so still learning how to match straps with watch styles. Cheers!
I personally think this watch is frickin awesome. IMO it's literally a perfect one watch sort of watch. It's flashy enough to be worn as a dress, it's not so far up its own ass that you can't wear it as a casual watch, etc. It's not too big, not too small. My only beef, and it really is my ONLY beef, with this watch, is the same one i have with the chrono... i wish it had just a LITTLE bit of contrast with the finishing. Just a wee bit of brushed or satin here and there, maybe on some bevels, etc, would really take this watch a serious step up. The all polished thing just really is a missed opportunity :( Edit: I also mostly disagree with you on the date window, i think the stark white works with the lume pips. However, i could agree that a black date disc with white numbers would have been cool on this particular watch.
I would always be happy to give up extra power reserve for a smoother running second hand. Not sure why watch brands always seem to think power reserve is more important.
I think it is a great looking watch. The kind of watch you buy to your son as 'first adult watch' or a watch you buy when you already have a diver and a beater...
I'd say it's some way between a dressy and casual, or just a really nice looking casual. It reminds me a bit of the old Seiko SilverWave, the proportions and the color scheme. It really looks good.
@@triniboy05 i think you might be thinking of different watchmakers. You can get Sinn starting at €690 and they typically float around €1,000 MSRP. Hamilton Intra Matic goes over €2,000.
I agree about the logo on the buckle. I have the chronograph version of this watch and one of the first things I noticed was that the logos on the dial and buckle didn't match. Not really a fan of the pure white background on the date either. They need to cut costs somewhere I guess.
Regarding the logo on the buckle: I take your point about the inconsistency. I imagine it's Hamilton's branding department getting nervous about using a watch which doesn't have the current logo *anywhere*, but it's not quite right to talk about the "old school" versus "new" logo. If you look at Hamiltons from the 1940s and 1950s, they have the same logo as today. It looks like they changed the logo in the 1960s, and then returned to the old logo (possibly when they went Swiss?). As for the overall look, it's an interesting hybrid of the original two-handed 38mm Intra-Matic (I own one of these, in gold PVD, and love it to bits) and the Chrono Auto Intra-Matic. Perhaps for those who like the sportier style of the Chrono (and the practicality of a seconds hand) but want something more "classic" rather than a chronograph. A good "everyday work watch", as others have commented.
Well, it is definitely on a dressier side, just maybe a little less that other Intramatics. However, though really I like this one, it cannot be compared to vastly superior Intramatic Chronograph. But, yeah, there is a significant price difference between the two, so I guess that for a sub-1000$ watch, this one presents pretty cool alternative, though I agree that the bracelet option would be fine and that water resistance should be 10 bar if possible. Still, this is one very nice watch, with wonderful and reliable movement and overall quality at least a notch above its price level.
I'd put it into an everyday wear/business casual category. It's nice that not everything fits into predefined groups. This one is a little too polished and blingy for me but I don't hate it. I will say the price seems a bit steep considering you can get one of their Khaki Field Titanium models for a similar price tag.
I see that watch as pretty dressy. Being all polished, I would not want to use it as a daily wearer. I would have it looking bad in short order. All that said, it is absolutely beautiful! Hearing it has 50 M WR makes me think even more it’s a dress watch.
I’ve heard some watches classified as “classic”. Although I’m not exactly sure what that means, this watch seems to have a similar aesthetic to watches I’ve seen classified as such.
A very clean and shinny all rounder panda looking watch, the hands are like omega globe master which I don’t like looks dull, but I was wonder why intra-matic why not automatic
A guy was looking at the blue dial version with the white seconds track a few days ago, it was 20% off, almost snagged on it, but something held me back. Maybe to do with it not knowing what it is, as you mentioned, I don't know.......
I think some others hit the nail right on the head with this being sort of being from the Mad Men era, or harkening back to the Japanese salary men of the 60s. Enough time has gone by that we can romanticize the era, but it still isn't as romantic a marketing fantasy as, say, James Bond or Jacques Cousteau. Nonetheless, I really like this watch and if the price were right, see myself getting one of these. I do think though that the strap is not the best, and I am thinking maybe a Horween Dublin leather strap or something a little bit less dressy might be the way to go. Or maybe Hamilton can come up with something similar to an old Omega beads of rice strap.
It looks like a dress or dress casual watch, can be worn all day every day!! Quick question, due to the modified eta, it seems that there is no regulation lever on the movement, can this watch be regulated if at some point the accuracy is not ideal? Can it be repaired if needed? I mean besides sending it to Hamilton. Thank you!
Always love Clint Eastwood quotes! The problem I have with white watches is that with my 52 year old eyes there is not enough contrast. Yep the date wheel is a bummer too.
I'd say this is sort of an evolved tuxedo dial "dressy" watch. Not a pure dress watch, but not really a casual watchIt's obviously the three hand version of the Intra-matic Auto Chrono.
I'd describe it as an "everyday" watch, or an "office" watch. It's dressy enough to work in an office setting, but not so dressy that it looks out of place in shorts and a polo/t-shirt. Also, with a date complication it adds practicality as an everyday watch in the office. I've been a Hammy Fanboy for a long time. They are a constant in the watch world. I really like the Intramatic Chronograph.

Looks like a great everyday watch with some vintage inspiration.

I worked for a company that on the weekend we could wear polo styles....this watch is for that casual work day

I think I’ll be forever saving then haha

3Hz movements have longer in between service time, so it's a plus in my book. Great review!
Very nice piece

For this piece, it looks like it is suited to wear when you are going to a jazz lounge to enjoy a night of jazz with drinks and food.

Nice review, Bruce, thanks. Watch is good looking. I have a Hamilton Viewmatic, will be 20 years old soon. Runs great.
Couldn't get a sarb 033, got a Jazzmaster 3 hand, black dial instead. Got the better watch and my first Swiss mechanical. Great value for money.
Both great choices. I’m not sure the Hammy is better than the Sarb. I would call it a draw.
@@tonyrome655 I agree but snobbery has to give the Swiss Hamilton the nod. Keys to a Porsche Turbo S or a Nissan GTR R35?

Great review. I really have an appreciation for Hamilton watches.
Retro-futuristic updating of art -deco: recalls how the past imagined the future.
It’s a no brainer to choose this one compared to a Seiko. Features to features and pounds to pounds this timepiece wins hands down.
Everything you say about Hamilton I agree with.
Great affordable watches, confusing ranges. We rely on reviewers like you to guide us through the maze

If there’s such a thing as a “weekend away” watch I’d say they’ve nailed the brief with this one.

Love this watch! But really, dress watch DNA. Or business dress cas.
30 years ago they were just called watches
I’ve heard some watches classified as “classic”. Although I’m not exactly sure what that means, this watch seems to have a similar aesthetic to watches I’ve seen classified as such.
A very clean and shinny all rounder panda looking watch, the hands are like omega globe master which I don’t like looks dull, but I was wonder why intra-matic why not automatic
A guy was looking at the blue dial version with the white seconds track a few days ago, it was 20% off, almost snagged on it, but something held me back. Maybe to do with it not knowing what it is, as you mentioned, I don't know.......
I see that watch as a perfect everyday smart casual watch for a middle manager...
Reminds me a little bit of the Oris Artix date a little bit.
Its smart casual. Swap the strap for a gold brown hirsch and wear it with chinos, oxfords and a polo, a nice belt and a brown leather bomber jacket.
Everyday office kinda watch. That’s what I bought the blue one for.
Better than my Hamilton, what is not currently working😢
Smart casual everyday watch I’d say
It looks like a dress or dress casual watch, can be worn all day every day!! Quick question, due to the modified eta, it seems that there is no regulation lever on the movement, can this watch be regulated if at some point the accuracy is not ideal? Can it be repaired if needed? I mean besides sending it to Hamilton. Thank you!
Great review. I love the watch.
This would be more of a dress watch for me. I have my Hamilton X-Wind auto chronograph as my daily watch along with a few different divers.
I love the Jazzmaster
How accurate is it?
Always love Clint Eastwood quotes! The problem I have with white watches is that with my 52 year old eyes there is not enough contrast. Yep the date wheel is a bummer too.
Same for me (56 year old eyes🥴) so I’ve ordered the blue one ...
I'd say this is sort of an evolved tuxedo dial "dressy" watch. Not a pure dress watch, but not really a casual watchIt's obviously the three hand version of the Intra-matic Auto Chrono.
Three hand version of the Intramatic Chrono?
Agree, for some reason I like this better, but would take either one if offered.
Yes, much thinner and lug to lug size is reduced too, so it’s overall much easier to wear
