    I bought my first Hamilton a long time ago. Then I sold it and I've been trying to get that one back for a long time. My wife says "you have 10 watches with black dials quit obsessing" . I explained it's like a first girlfriend , you never forget it. I probably shouldn't have said that , considering my wife is DEFINITELY NOT my first girlfriend. it's gonna be an expensive Valentines day trying to dig my way out of this one. thanks for keeping up the videos of affordable watches,

    There's a great "Hamilton" scene in the classic 1954 film noir, Crime Wave, where the bank robbers each check their watches. Each watch shot is an extreme close up, and they are all wearing different style Hamilton watches.

    I’ve been traveling through SE Asia for nine months with my 38mm Khaki Automatic as my travel companion. It’s rugged, versatile, and accurate. It’s flawlessly handled everything from long, bumpy motorbike rides across northern Vietnam, to snorkeling with sea turtles in the islands of Bali.
    A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a Black Bay 58 at an AD in Bangkok. I couldn’t pass it up, it’s incredible. But my Hamilton will forever be my first Swiss made, automatic watch, with so many amazing stories to go along with it. I’d recommend it to anybody.

    A bit late here but I've had mine for roughly 6 years now. I'm an avid outdoor person and I usually always have it with me. I've taken it on top of almost every California 14er, it's been on my wrist in -22 F weather, in the blackest night on top of mountains in snow and ice the lume has been bright enough to tell time. It's handled the aggressive rock at Joshua Tree and taken beatings from it fine. I usually have a Garmin on my right wrist and the Hamilton on my left. Having it there gives me comfort, knowing it will not fail me. It really holds a very special place in my heart. After 6 years and one service (last year 2020) it keeps time just fine. Still running about 8 seconds slow just like when I bought it new, which is fine with me.

The accuracy of the H10 movement is amazing, i'm getting +1.3 s/d average. I have only really started my collection since the lockdown, I have been watching your videos which I love, and have learned so much. The Khaki Field is my favorite line by Hamilton. I have what is essentially the quartz version of this watch (ref. H68411133), as I wanted a reliable quartz watch in my collection that I always know will be accurate. And it only gains like 1 second every 2 months so it’s awesome. It’s also a sand blasted case, which is a great look for this style of watch!

    I've had this watch for 3 years now. It's my first and only mechanical watch and I love it! Being an evolution of Hamilton's classic military field watches, it's so sturdily built that I never have to worry about it. But it's also has some subtle elegance and flair that you can dress it up. I went to my college graduation with this watch. At a glance you could've mistaken it for a dress watch!

      I really want to add that but have stalled on it for being too samey already have the khaki 38 on black strap. Didnt know about the seiko until after i purchased the hamilton. Ordered the newer larger snk flieger cream face last month on the metal strap and was upset at the sheer bulkiness and chintzyness of it side by side with my khaki 38. I will say the build quality and style was good and it pissed me off having to return it. Way too thick for something that had a dressy strap. Going to get the green one on the natoesque style. I can tolerate that being a bit larger as it has a more tool look to it. I do still want to snap up the older more basic snk though before they are no longer on sale anywhere. Might get the blue one?

    I own this watch as well and I have a couple of comments: 1) I have yet to see a picture on-line or a video that does this watch justice. There is just something about the design that doesn't lend itself to show off how lovely it is in real life when anyone tries to photograph it. Hamilton did a bang up job making an understated dial that is a real treasure to look at when you study it on your wrist. 2) I've seen a lot of reviews of this watch complaining about the strap being too stiff. I'll admit it does feel stiff when you first put it on, but like a good pair of leather boots it does break in over time and now I find it to be one of the most comfortable straps I have of any watch at any price point. It took about a month of very regular wear to get to that point. So yeah, I'll have to agree that this is one of the best daily wear watches money can buy. It looks great, it can be easily dressed up or dressed down, and the quality is clearly there in terms of materials and presentation. I own over twenty watches (why!!? who knows!!!) and this one is easily in my top three.

    Superb review. Of this field watch and the background of Hamilton. I also grew up not far from Lancaster and have a family friend who worked there and later started his own watch brand also based close by in an old converted bank, which I believe is the only US manufacturer making their own movements. I also remember saving up to buy that Pulsar watch and felt so futuristic watching people marvel at its "high tech" functioning. Anyway, your reviews embody the class and old world respect for quality. You must have an old soul. My daily wear has been a Rolex Explorer II for the last 24 years and I frankly almost never take it off, even showering and sleeping with it! That's why I bought it originally; to wear it in every scenario without worry. I was intrigued that some people were calling this Hamilton the blue collar Explorer, referring mostly to the Rolex Explorer I. Not in a demeaning way, but to highlight its durability, history and relative quality. I've always liked larger format watches so was favoring the Murph from Hamilton at 42mm but am torn, though your review is making me lean toward this smaller incarnation. Thanks for handling your reviews in such an elegant reverence. Wishing you continued success.

    My father-in-law’s parents gave him a Hamilton when he graduated from high school in 1951. When he died last year I discovered it had an inscription, which neither my wife nor her mother knew. It is a handsome watch. I had it cleaned, polished, lubricated, and polished, and now it looks great again. It must have been an expensive purchase for them, as they were small farmers and not well off at all. I have a Pulsar from 1984 I bought when I passed the bar exam. Sad that both are now foreign owned.

    I am about a week beyond the delivery date of this watch and I positively adore it.
    I did have the Khaki Mechanical for a time but sold it for two reasons: the all-matte finish and 9mm height. This model’s brushed case and polished bezel makes it far more versatile as an everyday piece, imo. It is a true field watch that can dress up a bit for the office.
    Add to that the increase in height to 11mm and base ETA 2824-2 with an incredible 80-hour reserve and you do have a damn near perfect everyday, swiss-made jewel of a watch.
    I picked mine up new for $349. A complete no-brainer.
    This Hammy will be one of a select few of my ‘never flip’ watches.
    I’m heading to Montana in mid-March for a week of fly-fishing. This will be the only piece I take on that trip. Love the 100m resist!
    What an altogether satisfying watch.

    I'm very happy with my Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic Skeleton. A skeleton is not to everyone's taste, but this one is gorgeous with great attention to detail, such as the polished beveled edges on the lugs, to name but one feature. The sapphire crystal makes everything pop visually. At a 40 mm case size, it's something that would fit your "skinny wrists" well.

    I bought this probably a little over a month ago in the 42mm version. It’s my first auto (although I’ve had many quartz watches over the years) but I love this watch! I wear it on a black and gray striped NATO similar to what you have here, and I use the brown leather that came on it when I’m wearing a button-up, polo or sweater, that’s about as dressed up as I get. The NATO works good with hoodies, t-shirts and such, now I want an auto diver of some kind, I’m leaning towards an Orient Mako USA II.

    I just bought this 38mm Hamilton watch last week with the brown leather strap from Macy's using friends and family discount for $450 out the door. I couldn't be happier. Thank you, TGV, for all the wonderful work you do. Its obviously more value than the watch that I just purchased as I continue to watch your channel. Cheers.

    Great review TGV. I bought mine 2 years ago to replace my trusty (but worn out) Swiss Army. This was my first introduction to automatic watches. I simply love this watch and it is my EDC! I've since added a Orient Star Classic as my affordable dress watch, and a Citizen Eco-drive "beater" for the weekend fly fishing trips. Keep up with the good work!

    I bought this on Amazon after seeing this review, I've been thinking about Hamilton watches for awhile now. But I also recently bought a Vaer A5 automatic, and I love it. Similar in looks to a Hamilton field khaki without looking like an attempt to copy a classic. Give it a look, it's by an American independent company.

      Christopher Hahn, you were correct. It’s about $100 to $150 cheaper on Chrono24. I think this is a great opportunity to test out the Japanese grey market. I’d like to see if I get charged a import tax on a cheaper watch like the Hamilton.

    First proper watch was a Khaki Field, had for under 2 years and wore it to hell, but ended up having the crown fall off when hiking in Lebanon. However this is not a bad review, it very likely was due to me wearing it when i would swim and sauna at least 4 times a week (this is not good for any watch). Got in contact with them said the crown fell off and they just said "OK no issue its still under warranty" i sent it off and they fixed it. Now i have a new shiny one. Honestly the thinness and lightness is just perfect, wish it had a screw down crown and anti reflective glass mind. Honestly best purchase i have ever made and represented a landmark. You cant put money on something that you carry with you and fills you with joy when you look down at the time.

    Great review. I have a few Hamilton's in my collection and this one is a distinct favorite of mine. It is possibly the favorite of my collection-so simple, function and subtly elegant at the same time. And pairs exceedingly well with a large variety of straps. I recommend getting it on the bracelet however, and then go from there! Amazing watch that I never tire looking at.

    === Hamilton Watch H70455733 Review ===
    This is a great review of a very nice watch. I own one with the brown strap and am very impressed and happy with it. Mine performs to about +5sec out of the box.
    ===== PROS: =====
    Light weight, and only 11mm case thickness
    Crown and Stem are very good.
    100 Meter water resistance is great in hot, rainy, tropical settings. I wouldn't swim with it as such, but if caught in a hot jungle downpour, I'll have confidence it will hold up well.
    80 Hour power reserve! Nuff said.
    I like the 'syringe' hands and their appropriate length to the corresponding tracks.
    Hacking function works very well with the syringe hands. It allows precise setting, and coordinated referencing, of the second hand to the minute hand. I often see hacking demonstrated in watch videos as just stopping the second hand at any old place on the dial. This isn't proper because you can confuse which minute you are referencing. The minute ahead or the minute behind?
    To correctly coordinate the time, stop the drive train (hack) with the second hand at the 12 position, align the minute hand on the proper tick mark, and then click the start function when your calibrating clock reaches top dead center (so to speak). That way, your minute hand is not half way between tick marks when the second hand is at top dead center at the 12 o'clock position. Whether your watch runs fast or slow by a few seconds, at least the seconds and minutes are bound together via the gear train, and you'll know 'to the minute' what time you have.
    Isn't this, after all, the reason for having hacking as a feature? It's a critical military necessity to get precise, coordinated timing. There's a great scene in the movie 'Gallipoli', where an officer is distracted when coordinating time with his command. He's off by some time and loses vital seconds leading his troops 'over the top' when the supporting artillery barrage ceases at the specified time. His hesitation allows the enemy critical time to regather themselves and defend their positions. This error results in the slaughter of his troops. Talk about bad timing!
    ===== CONS: =====
    Strap length is 8 inches on my brown leather version (8.5" on black leather version); a little short for my 7-7/8 inch wrist. I just manage to catch the last hole in the strap with little left over to tuck under the first of two strap loops. The larger versions, 40mm and 42mm, have a strap length of 8.5 inches. (Combined with a greater lug to lug length, this will afford more strap length to work with if needed.) I'm okay with the heavy, stiff leather. It holds up to damp, rainy conditions, breaks in over time, and is robust.
    @8:43 and @8:46 (SUNBURST - I'll say!) @8:49 - Sapphire crystal needs AR coatings on both surfaces. If you only coat the backside you still get front side reflections and vise versa. (I wonder if Mil Specs now require AR coatings on both surfaces so as to reduce reflection?)
    The lume pips are all the same small pip and it is hard to orient the 12 position without a distinguishing lume mark of some kind. Even the three o'clock position is lummed, so it can't be an orienting reference. @9:03 I would like to see larger lume pips at the hour references. As on the older 1970 model you show @7:08 , the lume is a larger triangle which makes night reading easier. I agree, some sort of lume is needed on the second hand.
    @7:00 and @9:07 The outside 'mini-track' has each second divided into 5 tick marks which doesn't work with the 3Hz beat frequency. @9:17 The seconds should be divided into either 3 tick marks per second or just one tick mark per second (as on the 'sterile' version of the old 1970 field watch.) This would allow for a larger lume at the hour markers.
    Other Hamilton's, like the Jazzmaster, have 4 tick marks per second. That worked well when the beat frequency was 4Hz. When the ETA movement was modified from 28,800 (4Hz) down to 21,600 (3Hz), the dials were never modified to account for the change. Having 5 tick marks per second doesn't work with either 4Hz or 3Hz and you see this all the time on so many brands. Once you've seen it, it's hard to unsee! On the new Seiko Prospex 'Alpinist' (SPB121J1) there are now six tick marks per second. This works well with both the 3Hz beat and one degree per tick mark for the compass feature.
    Thanks for the great video as always!

    I have the hand wind version of the Khaki and it's a classic. The only real bugaboo I have with these Hammies is the uncoated sapphire crystal. The domed shape is almost always partially obscured by bright glare. But, again, this crystal shape is likely a link back to the original military models. Also, the lume is very weak. Otherwise, these watches are, imo, the closed thing to a perfect EDC watch. Every watch fam should have one.
