I just got the Hamilton Khaki 38 Auto and it is Fantastic, keeping time like a COSC certified watch at less than 1 sec + a day! Unbelievable I’ve had it for 2 weeks. Very Happy with this one Jori
I own the Automatic. Just took it in for repair (mainspring) this year after 12 years of rugged service. I also own an auto Seiko 5 Sports blue, an auto Seiko Presage brown sunburst and several others ranging from a 16 dollar Casio digital classic to a Braun classic (quartz). The Hamilton was my first dive down into the the rabbit hole of collectors watches, and I still admire it.
I got the khaki mechanical coming in tomorrow. It’s the discontinued version with the high beat movement, as well. Got a cordura strap separately and the watch for $400
Man, I didn’t think I would like that 38mm hand wind on an 8” wrist but it’s perfect. Slips under my sleeve perfectly, I usually start at 40mm however I absolutely love the feel of it, I almost forget that I’m wearing it. I have actually forgotten it’s on my wrist. At 9.5mm it’s so slim, I like winding it in the morning, there’s something about the tactile sense with it. Everything else I have is automatic, definitely changed my thoughts on mechanical pieces.
Khaki Field Automatic (42mm) all day long! It’s already reserved in one of my local jewelry store and can’t wait to have it on my wrist! Thanks for your insight and thanks for your review (even 3 years later, this watch ticks all the boxes).
The thinness of the mechanical is a huge advantage IMO. It seems to be one of the thinnest mechanical watches in its price range and probably the thinnest mechanical field watch period.

Great vid Jory! I recently pulled the trigger on the 40mm auto version. It packs the same H10 movement as the 42mm. 80hr power reserve and so far accurate to within 2 seconds a day. I'm loving it.
I bought the automatic for my nephew for his senior hs graduation in May. Same reasoning; while I loved the profile of the fields mechanical much better, I bought him the other because it's more versatile as a dress watch he could also wear to interviews. I actually bought him the Khaki King as it's a bit smaller at 40mm, has a threaded crown and I love the day+date detail

Dude! Awesome to see you in an environment outside of the office! To be honest, it would be awesome if you kept doing this type of video for divers, dress watches, etc. Great stuff!
Automatic, hands down! I have a Hamilton mens dress watch that my Grandmother gave to my Grandfather on Christmas day in 1948. It's been all around the world with me, and still keeps excellent time. I wanted to add another Hamilton to my collection, and as soon as I saw the Khaki Automatic, I knew that was the one. I'll probably never own a Patek Philippe or an A. Lange & Son, but honestly, this Hamilton is a bargain at twice the price. I am confident that it will still be going strong when my son bequeaths it to his son. And so it goes. If you are in the market for a rugged, reliable, handsome field watch, the Hamilton Khaki Automatic is hard to beat. Buy one -- you'll be glad you did !
I prefer the quartz version. It‘s reliable, a joy to look at and it satisfies all my watch-needs. I like how accurate it is without me having to correct time every couple of days.
I have the 38mm khaki automatic and find it to be a perfect travel watch since I don’t require a gmt complication. Took it on a recent out of country adventure where 50% was spent in cosmopolitan areas and 50% hiking/nature. It works with both blazers and loafers vs backpacks and boots. Also it’s not so showy to be eye candy for potential thieves depending on what part of the world you’re in. Would like to point out that the 38mm auto has long lugs. I have a 6.3 inch wrist and the 47mm lug to lug length is the max I can pull off.
He gets around to the watches at 4:36. Just snagged the mechanical version on eBay for $300. (Display model, effectively new and unused.) Dark green dial, green strap, a great look for outdoors activities. The sapphire crystal is the big deal here - you want that on any watch you expect will be seeing some abuse, and it's something you rarely get at this price. Accuracy is more than good enough: who needs the time to within a second when you're outdoors? For handsome dress watches that are similarly bargain-priced for what you get, I think Tissot is far and away the winner. Like the Hamilton, these aren't for watch snobs, they're for people who just want to own an excellent watch that they can wear for decades. (Some people pay this kind of money for garbage "fashion" watches, which is either hilarious or sad, depending on your point of view.) I have to point out that going from the mechanical's 9 mm to the automatic's 12 mm is an extra 1/3 in thickness. The thinner watch will get whacked a lot less often, and 9 mm is impressively thin for a quality timepiece.
I have had four Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic 38mm watches. All were exactly the same with the brown strap. I keep buying them a selling them to get something else. The last one was sold to get a an Oris Propilot. The thing is everytime I sell one I wish I hadn't. If I were to design my perfect watch it be almost exactly like the Hammy except for one thing. The sapphire is great but it needs some anti reflective coating.
Love my Auto with 80hr power reserve, and the fact you can dress it up too. Yes, the mechanical is more appealing to the diehard watch collector, but the auto is the better overall package imo
I’d agree with your choice Jory, because I did! I was all set to drop the bomb on the Auto, then they announced the new face-lifted version of the mechanical and I immediately ordered that instead! I love my little mechanical khaki field, can’t see it ever leaving my collection, it’s a keeper. Best regards from the UK, Dazza 🇬🇧
Tough choice! I like to have a date on my field watch because I lose track of days easily when I’m camping/canoeing. Plus better WR points me to the auto. Love both.
I have the 42mm khaki Titanium that is an automatic with the older ETA higher beat movement. I wish I had the 80 hour power reserve but that sweeping second hand looks so nice.
Hey man, great video! I actually just got the mechanical in all black. I'm excited to get but I wanted to ask you how many times are you supposed to wind it just so I don't over wind The watch? Thanks again! 🤙
Personally I take the first few wears of a new mechanical hand-wind watch to figure out how much winding the movement requires to keep it running through the day (and in between wears if it’s part of a multi-watch rotation). For example: the first day you might give the crown a good 10 full turns, set the time, and go about your day. If it starts loosing a lot of time or stops completely during the day, you’d increase the morning winding. Then depending on how many watches you wear in frequent rotation, you’ll need to be sure to wind it if you go more than 80 hrs (~3 days) without taking it for a spin. The manual might give an exact number of turns needed to fully wind the mainspring from dead.. But if you plan to keep it ticking in between wearing it, it’ll really just take a couple weeks of experimenting before you get it dialed in. (Unintentional watch pun) Good luck! I own both watches (38mm auto & black PVD mechanical) and love them equally for different reasons.
Thank you so much for your detailed review. I want to buy a Hamilton for my husband as a birthday present, and your comments on spending time with your watch and having different watches for different occasions vs one watch for all occasions really helped me choose the mechanical option for him. I will put an fancy auto on the bucket list for another birthday or anniversary- this man can not have enough watches or knives! Thanks!
Hello! 🎉 just wanna ask how is your husband’s Hamilton coming along, for like 2 years now? 😊 does the Hamilton hold to its promise? I’m on the market for a Hamilton you see. Thanks! 🫡
I love both. The automatic for everyday and everywhere: office, home etc. The manual, for hiking , hunting, fishing. The outdoors. So. Well said. As a romantic, the hand wi d mechanic is a sentimental favorite.
My favourite of the line is the khaki king automatic because of the full day of the week on the top of the screen. It's such a beautiful and versatile watch that work with different band in different situations. I've been using it as a formal and even dress watch from time to time just by matching the band with the outfit. I wanted the khaki mechanical with the 2801 but it's getting hard to find and instead I went for the marathon general purpose inox mechanical with the same movement. The marathon big advantage over the khaki mechanical is the fantastic tritium lume that make it worth every penny. The marathon is more of a real modern military watch where the khaki mechanical is a little bit of a homage of past hamilton military watch. Either way they are winners and the 2801 is a very simple yet accurate movement. Out of the box I got +1 +2 seconds consistently and that second hand swipe is so smooth. I don't know if you ever reviewed a marathon watch but I think a gsar or a general purpose should be on your list. Once you get a taste of the tritium lume ... ok ok joking don't put that in your mouth.
I just picked up the khaki king with the Champaign dial and am absolutely in love with it! Great watch, and works as both a dress watch or a field watch
@@ajgross67 I had a hard time deciding between the two colour when purchasing mine. They are both nice. Check colareb for leather straps. They are really nice and fit well with the look of the watch.
My 42mm auto is my favorite watch! Couldn't warm up to the steel bracelet so I put on a Barton elite silicone strap and it's amazing. Mine runs at about +2 a WEEK if I wear it everyday. Great watch!
I like my 38mm mechanical but I’ve accidentally overwound it twice (within the first six months) and had to send it back to be fixed both times. I love the nato band though. I also have a 7.5” wrist and i feel that it’s just a hair too small on my wrist (I mostly wear 40mm-42mm) but I still wear it. In hindsight I probably should’ve gone with the 42mm automatic and got a nato
Field Mechanical is popular for a reason. Funny, I'm wearing one as I'm watching your video. A rugged truck, beautiful open space in the country, and beautiful watch... life can't get better than this. Envy you, bro~
The best is the 38mm automatic with steel bracelet. I personally own it and it's wonderful: you can really wear it as a dress watch, a diver or a field watch and it always look great on your wrist
Hey. What about the Timex navy xl automatic !? I personal have'it for about a year. Works great, beat it up, mountain, sea, worck with it... Evrithing...
Just bought one a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical 38mm. I got the brown dial because I am OG like that. haha Congrats again on that 100k subs pimp.@TheTimeTeller
As always an entertaining video. Both great watches, but I went with the khaki field quartz in PVD. The 40mm case size is a sweet spot for me, and I love the option of PVD. I agree with your knife philosophy. Always carry a sharp blade and an utility knife. 🤙
Thank you for a great video. I have been back and foward on which Hamilton to go for, but after this video decision is made. 42 MM Khaki Field. Thank you for helping me out
I do like my Hamilton Khaki Auto Titanium. I've had it for over 4 years but had a serious issue about 5 months ago where the crown rusted from the inside. I got it repaired but I wonder about the water resistance rating for these watches.
I picked up the 42 mm Khaki Automatic in January and still can't get enough of it. I have a preference for a large watch as I just think it's a more masculine look. Also I can wear it to work with a dress shirt; totally agree with the comments about the watch's versatility. One last note is that the caseback window is gorgeous.
Just planning to purchase the mechanical over auto, but i believe the new 2019 khaki field model all used the H-50 with 80 power reserve, its no more 28,000v right?
Great video and relevant, I picked up the 38 Mechanical this weekend. Great wear on the wrist, considering I wear Seiko Divers most of the time I barely felt I had a watch on. Also I love the great vintage military look being an ole salty dog former US Marine. Good job filming out on location.
Another great vid ! I’m hoping to add the 38mm auto to my collection one day, just love the look of them. I’m picking up an snk809 soon which is fairly close to the mechanical.
I have both the Seiko SNK 809 and the Hamilton Khaki Automatic, and both are a terrific value for the money. Truth be told, I find myself gravitating toward the Hamilton more and more frequently when it's time to decide what to wear on a given day. My "collection" consists of fourteen timepieces that I have researched thoroughly before buying, and I am happy with all of them. "Collection" is in quotes because the most expensive watch I own was only two thousand dollars, and was a gift from a woman in China. Perhaps some day I will be in a position to afford a Rolex (in which case I would buy something else; never found Rolex watches all that exciting), but until then, I'll continue to shop for bargains, and the Hamilton Khaki Automatic is just such a watch.
I own two - a 2017 Field Mechanical hand-wind-only and a 1978 military-issue Hamilton Field Watch. Both are great. The '78 has that "vintage" look because it actually is vintage now and the lume on it has faded. But if I have to go back into the sandbox overseas to hurt people again, I'm taking my G-Shock negative-LCD solar and my Marathon tritium mil-issue mechanical hand-wind that even has tritium on the seconds hand. The rest of the collection goes into the safety deposit box at the bank.
Great video. I was looking to purchase the Hamilton Khaki Automatic H70455533. That’s the one you were talking about in the video. You were saying it’s 42mm but link shows the watch is a 38mm case back. Am I mistaken? Thanks
I wear the titanium Version field Automatic. I'm a remote medic, wear it everyday. Tough watch. Light weight. Rubbish leather strap though. Changed that for a Haveston Patrol Olive drap nato strap. It makes the watch pop. The Lume at night, my god, it's like the beacons of Gondor ! End of day, it's nothing fancy but reliable especially in my line of work.
Nice Video, Good advices man. I have the mechanical one and I love it. It was my first Hamilton watch and first hand winding mechanical watch in my collection I don’t have a Rolex yet in my collection and it’s one of my goal to have one for more than 10 years ago. So which Rolex would you recommend to check and from where would you advice to buy one? As I live out of US. Thanks man. Looking forward to hear from you.
Nice vídeo I actually own the utomatic one and I wear it with some nice NATO straps, one green military and two Bond style. It's my most precise watch (better than an Oris Artix Date and a Vintage Rado Green Horse).. I was planning to buy the mechanical for my 18 year old son, and now I'm convinced to do so. Many thanks! This is an excellent channel.
Which size would be better for a 8" wrist? I like the looks of the 38mm mechanical and the 44mm auto, but I worry they might look too small and too big.
My wrist is just shy of 8 inches and I have many larger watches but the 38mm all be it smaller has a certain nostalgia to it and I find myself wearing it all the time!!! The 38mm manual khaki field is amazing - and with the trend of more and more watches going back to the smaller traditional sizes it is a pleasure to wear!!!
I have 38 mechanical. Can’t beat the true ETA 28.8K, 8bps movement. I’ve got plenty of 6bps movements in other watches. Love the size as all my others are 40-45 range. Just different and that’s good.
As a collector I'd go with a 38mm. A collector already has a dress watch and doesn't need a "ONE" watch. Water may be life but beef jerky is living! lol LOVE that you're a jeep guy and a knife guy!!! great vid!!
Hey there. After watching more than a few of your watch review videos, I finally decided to leave a comment and subscribe. That is significant for me because I don’t just support “anyone” that tries to create a RUclips “business/persona”. However as a fellow horologist, I tend to spend a fair amount of my free time with screen time mainly focused on watches I’ve had, ones I have and one that I am considering purchasing. To that end, I just bought a Hamilton Khaki Field watch (from an authorized dealer, of course, the only way to go, IMO) at an amazing price point. All in I bought the watch for LESS than $400 (model H70555533). So I now have the “iconic field watch” ticked off of my list. I think you do as good of a job as only one on RUclips reviewing watches of all shapes, sizes and price points. In short, you are very relatable to the average (casual?) horologist. This video just reinforced my decision to go with the Hamilton model I did. I am expecting to own this watch permanently and pass it down to one of my sons (in about 50 years, lol). Keep up the great work, keep these videos coming. Jason S. Short Hills, NJ.
Used to be all about Nalgene until the double wall vacuum sealed bottles came out. Currently have two Hydro Flasks. Lost one then found it again. Taken them camping and while they do get banged up they still keep my drinks cold. I NEED COLD! Unless I’m really roughing it... I also carry the Leatherman Charge tti which is a jack of all trades master of none.

@@giancarlom. Yes indeed- !
I just got the 38mm automatic and I think it's absolutely fantastic!
I love both.
The automatic for everyday and everywhere: office, home etc.
The manual, for hiking , hunting, fishing. The outdoors.
So. Well said.
As a romantic, the hand wi d mechanic is a sentimental favorite.
which of the two is more scratch resistant for an everyday watch?
Nice review 👌💪 greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭
What do you think of the pre-2018 version of the mechanical?
I bought the Khaki King for my nephew this year as his graduation present
@@adamlamar101 lucky nephew ! This can cause serious harm if you get him into watches :)
@guess what in that line of thought ... We can check the sun position.
I got the bronze 38. I love it.
How durable is the 38’s nato strap? Also, have you gone / would you go swimming with the 38?
Field Mechanical is popular for a reason. Funny, I'm wearing one as I'm watching your video. A rugged truck, beautiful open space in the country, and beautiful watch... life can't get better than this. Envy you, bro~
Been debating on which one to get in all black and still can’t decide which blackout version to get. Any recommendations?
The best is the 38mm automatic with steel bracelet. I personally own it and it's wonderful: you can really wear it as a dress watch, a diver or a field watch and it always look great on your wrist
Hey. What about the Timex navy xl automatic !? I personal have'it for about a year. Works great, beat it up, mountain, sea, worck with it... Evrithing...
I have the mechanical one, love it!
Just bought one a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical 38mm. I got the brown dial because I am OG like that. haha Congrats again on that 100k subs pimp.@TheTimeTeller
I saw a guy on the subway wearing the khaki automatic this morning. A compliment started a brief watch convo before my stop.
Awesome how watches do that!
Thank you for helping me out
I have the 38mm auto and love it. Looks and performs great, but would love to add the mechanical someday!
? huh
@guess what Do you need to compensate for something then? Aw someone's penis size is below average. 😂
@guess what lmao keyboard warrior
I do like my Hamilton Khaki Auto Titanium. I've had it for over 4 years but had a serious issue about 5 months ago where the crown rusted from the inside. I got it repaired but I wonder about the water resistance rating for these watches.
Someone may have said already, but I believe that knife is a Victoriox Cadet. Great video.
Thanks for the video. Nice work.
Just planning to purchase the mechanical over auto, but i believe the new 2019 khaki field model all used the H-50 with 80 power reserve, its no more 28,000v right?
Great video. Funny, Entertaining and informative. Still can’t make up my mind on which one though!
This feels like the watch version of the Crocodile Hunter. And I love it
lolololol!!!
There is no downside to a hacking automatic compared to a mechanical one. I prefer a watch without a date complication, and I have no use for it.
Great video and relevant, I picked up the 38 Mechanical this weekend. Great wear on the wrist, considering I wear Seiko Divers most of the time I barely felt I had a watch on. Also I love the great vintage military look being an ole salty dog former US Marine. Good job filming out on location.
Scott Pringle which seiko divers do you wear?
I wear of course the SKX007, Orange Samurai, SBDC053 and a Turtle.
Scott - UUUHHH RAAHH! Semper Fi!
It's like the Bible. Rolex is a submariner, Cartier is a tank, Omega is a speedmaster. Of course, our Hamilton is Kakifield Mechanical.
Nice comparison aaaaand as a graphic designer I especially liked the VHS type font in the beginning, good job :)
Hi ! Is the 38mm an eta 2824 or a h10? I would like a high beat watch like in thé video !
I'm thinking of getting the 38 mm mechanical but I really don't like that NATO strap. Any thoughts about changing it out?
Just picked up the larger version: the 42mm khaki mechanical! It's aesthetic/function is perfect! 🙏
Jory your videos keep getting better and better. Love the outdoor filming!
Thanks bro!
I have the 38mm automatic. The most versatile watch I have in my collection!!
Thanks
I would (and am) choosing the 38mm auto on the bracelet
Nice to see you out of the office, Jory! Great video, keep em coming!
Auto vs hand wind. Both are mechanical.
Nice Video, Good advices man.
I have the mechanical one and I love it. It was my first Hamilton watch and first hand winding mechanical watch in my collection
I don’t have a Rolex yet in my collection and it’s one of my goal to have one for more than 10 years ago. So which Rolex would you recommend to check and from where would you advice to buy one? As I live out of US.
Thanks man. Looking forward to hear from you.
Have you tried Biltong which is way better than Jerky?
Nice Vid
Would the Auto be better compared to the khaki king? If so how do you think it compares to that model?
Nice vídeo I actually own the utomatic one and I wear it with some nice NATO straps, one green military and two Bond style. It's my most precise watch (better than an Oris Artix Date and a Vintage Rado Green Horse).. I was planning to buy the mechanical for my 18 year old son, and now I'm convinced to do so. Many thanks! This is an excellent channel.
Which size would be better for a 8" wrist? I like the looks of the 38mm mechanical and the 44mm auto, but I worry they might look too small and too big.
They also sell a 42mm auto
@@batmenbeyont7775 I looked at it, but the position of the date made it looks strange for my taste.
I got a mechanical one and was thinking about getting a automatic one. 😊
As a collector I'd go with a 38mm. A collector already has a dress watch and doesn't need a "ONE" watch. Water may be life but beef jerky is living! lol
LOVE that you're a jeep guy and a knife guy!!!
great vid!!
Thanks, Jerome!

How funny that I was looking at the automatic earlier today and here you are doing a video about it! This helped me make my decision! Thanks!
Enjoy bro! It was meant to be!
Jory you're a legend!! Love the channel and keep posting!
Which one is more accurate?
Used to be all about Nalgene until the double wall vacuum sealed bottles came out. Currently have two Hydro Flasks. Lost one then found it again. Taken them camping and while they do get banged up they still keep my drinks cold. I NEED COLD! Unless I’m really roughing it... I also carry the Leatherman Charge tti which is a jack of all trades master of none.
Love my Hamilton, Love my Benchmade Griptilian too. Cheers man..great gear choices
Why does the mechanical not have an exhibition case back?
I would love to get the handwind but i really worry about the lug to lug on my six inch wrist
I'm curious. How many takes were required to line the driver-side window up perfectly with the camera? 😜
Oh boy!!! FINALLY a channel with true manly content. I mean , we live in times when being an enthusiast for things that traditionally have define us as men is wrong or "not right", and finding your channel, a mix of outdoors, jeeps, knives and watches just killed it for me!!!! Keep up the good work. BTW I'll go with the mechanical one
They’re both mechanical.
