In my opinion the LL Bean (which I believe is from the early 1980's) is the best of these. I prefer its size better. Many watches today are way to big and look clunky. My interest in watches began with old black and white movies from the 1930's on. Frequently in those movies as part of the plot someone looks at their watch, or you see a character just wearing a watch. The style and size never over powers the wrists, giving an understated look with proper proportion. In the 1970's huge tablecloth size ties were in style and looked horrible. Whenever something we wear becomes overs sized it ruins its look. Just my view. not worth a dime.
The thing is, most modern watches are a lot more expensive and better finished than their vintage predecessors. When you pay a lot of money for a watch, you want it to be large enough so that it is more visible. I know that when I wear my watches, I like to be able to see the time at a glance. I also buy watches with beautiful dials. So I want to be able to notice all the nice details of the dial. That's harder to do with a smaller watch. When most people wore suits to work, or dressed more nicely on the weekends, it made sense to have smaller watches, so that the watch could fit under a dress shirt. But since we now live in a very casual society, and most people wear tshirts, it makes more sense to have watches with larger dimensions. Most men no longer wear jewelry, so the watch has become the new jewelry, and you want it to be noticed. For me, 38mm-39mm is the sweet spot.
@@barryfleischer6553 I agree. Even though I prefer watches that are between 38mm and 39mm, I make sure to buy watches that have clean, simple dials, that are not too ostentatious. My favorite watches in my collection are the Seiko SJE089, and the SJE093. Their designs are based on vintage watches. My favorite watches are dress watches that have a classy and timeless look, without too much stuff going on the dial.
I really love the khaki field mechanical 2018 and it’s my daily watch! I love the looks being only a time telling tool, but just sometimes i kept looking out for a date as all my other watches tells me the date.
Hey Guy, great review once again! I was wondering if i could get your opinion on the breitling superocean heritage 42mm and the junghan maxbill chronoscope?
I like the SuperOcean heritage, but I’ve only seen them briefly in stores, haven’t spent a lot of extensive time with one. I haven’t seen a chronoscope though, so I can’t say about that one.
There are 2 things that put me off. First the lug to lug is so long I think only NATO's work, I don't like the gap with a standard strap, and the mechanical which I prefer over the auto only has 50m wr. If it wasn't for those 2 things I would be all over one. Thanks for the informative review.
I thanks for your super cool video! I would like to find the same pre 2018 version but without the date, is it possible ? Because I like on this version the kind of grey color of the brushed case. And I like the facto that the hands are not fake yellow patina ! But I don’t like the date that much. This is why i am looking for an Hamilton without these yellow hands color, without the date and with that kind of brushed color ! Thanks for your help
Good review. This is a field watch and so you are supposed to be able to see the reflection of your enemy standing behind you through the reflection on your faceplate
Hi Guy, my Khaki Field mechanical 2018 has an accuracy of +11secs/day spending most of its time in the watch case. I think it was +5 or +6secs when I bought it 3 months ago but I used to wear it more hrs/day.. I do not have a timegrapher to check it. Do you think I should worry that something is wrong? What is the accuracy of yours? Thanks
Rp Mcmurphy Thanks for the reply and advice. What worries me is that the accuracy seems to be getting worse with time but I know that having the watch mostly in the watch case does not help.
Hamilton’s Accuracy spec is -10 to +15 seconds per day, according to the faq on their website. You’re well within specifications at +11. You also have to keep in mind that sitting it in one position and timing it isn’t the best method. It will keep different time in the wrist, and that’s what matters. Wear it for 5 days and see what it averages per day. If it’s worse than the accuracy in the static position I would maybe have it looked at.
Thanks Guy. It is always appreciated that you reply to the comments. Please make a video comparing the Khaki Field mechanical 2018 vs. the Khaki King. They are both very popular and great watches and I would like to see them side by side.
I reviewed the King a while back and compared it to the 38mm automatic. They 2018 mechanical wasn’t out back then. I don’t own a Khaki King unfortunately so I can’t make another video on it unless I find a loaner.
I owned the 38mm khaki field automatic black dial. I loved that watch. BUT the lack of AR made it extremely hard to see and appreciate the dial. I felt like 90 percent of the time I was looking at glare. I wonder how much AR or a flat crystal instead of domed would make a difference.
I bought my Auto the other way around, bought it with the black leather strap and then a few months later ordered the stainless bracelet for it. Swap them depending on my mood, or of it's warm put a Nato on it.
Good one Guy! I purchased the 38mm Hammie Auto about 2 weeks ago and so far the thing is running 0 to +1 day ! It is Blowing me away It’s as accurate as my Tudor COSC Certified BB go figure . Hope it stays that way😂 I had a 42mm version and it was Horrid! +32 sec day from the start! Got rid of it on Ebay with full disclosure of its sucky accuracy
Very nice. Mine is about +2 or +3 per day. The H10 movement can be very accurate. Was your 42mm using the newer H series movement or was it an older 2824-2?
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews sorry for the late reply! Yes it was the H10 as well but man was it fast. I like you have a Timegrapher but on the 42 I forgot to use it before swapping out straps and Jomashop would not exchange it because of this☹️ oh well I took a little loss and dumped it quickly😂 I like em accurate just like you Bro
I am looking at getting the khaki field pre 2018 mechanical. I am a fan of the open back design and am willing to pay extra for the auto. What is your opinion?
Hey Guy: nice video. I have always liked field watches, although mine is a Timex 749905. I picked up a Hamilton Dress watch last year because I do like the brand quality. Cheers!
This was a great video, very helpful and thorough. Something I think would have made it even better would be if you had included the 38mm auto version, with silver dial and stainless bracelet.
Great video Guy, not sure how I missed this one but glad to see it even late! The automatic looks so much bigger than the 38MM mechanical, must be the polished bezel, less crowded dial and big endlinks on the bracelet!
Would the khaki auto fit on the 2018 khaki mechanical?! That would solidify the mechanical purchase for me. Also what time grapher would you recommend and what is a good entry level price point for one? Thank you in advance
I’m not sure about the first question. As for affordable timegrapher, the No. 1000 by Weishi, or any other version of the No. 1000 is the most common and the one I have.
There is one for the older Khaki Field, there was a thread on WatchuSeek about it. But it's harder to find, you might have to contact Hamilton themselves to order that one.
New Hamilton owner. I bought my H69439363 Khacki field in December 2020. On the crown and in the back, the H is the newer, curvier version, not the block H version as you mention. To me, the watch looks like what you are calling the tool watch, the subtle, pre 2018..... It has the date at 3, olive face, canvas/leather strap with metal loops and three metal strap holders. Is my watch considered a modern Khacki or pre 2018? Confused. Thanks. I love it no matter what it is.
I have a new Hamilton khaki field automatic . It is a sharp looking watch. I love it. My cheap Timex expedition watch looks just as good as those other watches . It is my travel and beater watch . It only cost me $50 lol
I am looking new field watch to replace mine 17 years old QQ sweet sixteen gift watch. I am 33 and i am not collector, but i found Hamilton Khaki field watch of 38mm would look solid for my age and i could wear it everyday :) Price and futures and look i think is well balanced.
I wish you would have set them all at different times ! would have drove all the OCD guys nuts ! Very good video I'm looking to buy Hamilton at some point !
I have to pre 2018 and the auto and I have to agree with you they they really kind of overlap each other I also have the Vintage and there's a notable difference and I do wear it occasionally but again like you said it tends to be a bit small
My first thought was those 2 are quite similar. Very nice watches, both of them, and if you’re a Hamilton collector I could see having both. But for more variety the new mechanical model stands on its own a bit better.
I like them all but would go for the auto version. I also usually like getting watches on their bracelets but the gap after the end links really bothers me. I also don’t like that the center links are split down the middle.
I bought the Khaki 38 Auto on leather strap, imo the bracelet doesn't look good on it. But was wondering that there's no Khaki King in the comparative. It brings the date complication, which is very useful. Honestly, I'm not sure the mechanical model is very practical if you're in a hurry every day.
Did you ever get it? I've had my 42mm Khaki Auto on a leather strap for 3-4 years now and also have two 38mm mechanicals (pre 18 with a date complication, and the newer "military homage" model..)
A note on the ‘fauxtina’ issue. The original 33mm Khaki fields did NOT have white lume originally which has turned yellow over time - it was an off-white shade of cream to begin with, not unlike the modern Khaki field. We know this because we have evidence of new old stock (NOS) Khaki fields from the 60s and 70s which have never been exposed to sunlight, but still have creamy yellow lume. Yes the passage of time makes it slightly darker, but that’s all. There are also photo advertisements showing creamy lume on the originals.
Bought the Auto, due to one OCD detail - the manual has a biggish gap between the case and whichever leather strap you put on it. I can't "mind the gap"! Just looks wrong. Auto seems to look smarter with a strap. Can't wait to see it! £416 on steel bracelet - not bad...
Curved sapphire on a dark dial is a no-no for me - I can't be doing with the reflections - I'd take hardlex or acrylic over sapphire in this case. Better yet flat sapphire or boxed sapphire. I really like the LL Bean. I've got a Russian watch from the 70-s that looks similar and is 31mm and love it.
@@JustBlueFish well you know what I ment, Rolex and Omega classics... No harm ment, just like your field watch affinity, that's how I started to follow your chanell.
I'm wavering between the Khaki Field Mechanical and the Khaki Field Automatic, and I'm wondering which one is more resistant to scratches as an everyday watch.
@@JustBlueFish Ohh well that makes sense, Im planning to pick up the Khaki King in the near future as my first swiss watch. Hoping that it will meet my expectations!
I was going to buy the 38mm auto, but then I heard about all the WR issues from owners on the forums. I also don't get why seemingly all hamiltons has to have horrible or mediocre lume. (Imo a field watch should have at least decent lume.)
I can't comment on the WR, because unless it's a dive watch I don't get my watches wet - so I've obviously never had an issue with any of my Hamilton watches. The lume is, however, very poor.
Do you think that watch designers will ever design watches with small diameters like the vintage Hamilton Khaki Field you showed us today? And what is the purpose of a small dial? Or is it just a matter of fashion? I would say that a small watch is more difficult to make than a bigger one. From that perspective it is yet more suprising that they made smaller watches in the old days than they do now. I think that 42 mm watches were hardly available in the fifties, sixties and seventies? Can you tell something about thus development?
I don’t think designers will go back towards the trend of vintage sized smaller watches. At least not anytime soon. Style does change and often times things that went out of style come back in style, but I don’t expect that to happen with watches anytime soon.
I like the variation of sizes and varieties Hamilton offers. I’m relatively new to Hamilton and bought my first Khaki Field last month. The Khaki Field King is a great watch. Oddly enough I tried on both the king and 42mm and felt they wear/fit similarly.
Having such a hard time deciding between the auto and that 38 mm mechanical you compared right away. Love the dial and simplicity of the mechanical but feel like the auto is more wearable for me as a doctoral student. Any recommendations?
So it's a year later and the pre-2018 mechanical is still available. They call it the "Officer's" field watch to distinguish it from the new one, which I think is cool. This is the one I just picked up, with the green face. Thanks.
Generaly I don`t like only 1 thing in pilots...wich is the arrow indexes. And there comes the automatic Hamilton. Looks much much better in my opinion. I`ve noticed not for the first time...that steel bracelet change the pilots dramaticaly into the whole different watch.
The khaki automatic looks much better in my opinion than the mechanical. The dial has depth, the polish finish on the bezel is spot on and the lack of AR coating makes it shine in a way that only looks good on the khaki field. Its perfect
The new 2018 model dial looks like it was patterned after a WWII aviation gauge... and to me it looks like it was done with a Leroy set. Now there's nothing wrong with that... just how it looks to me. It's too bad that you couldn't dig up an original Hamilton Army-issue watch so we could see just how it actually looks. Now, having said that, I would not mind having the new 2018 version, although the Automatic version would be nice as well...
I've been wanting to buy a field khaki for a while now as it would be my first higher end watch purchase but I'm kind of put off with some of the horror stories of it's water resistance
You can have its water resistance tested to see if it really can go down to 50m. Do that every 12 - 18 months and you should have no problems whatsoever.
Have a look at a thread on Watchuseek about WR. It's called "Sigh... Myth Busting Again". As long as your watch has been checked to be really water resistant, you shouldn't worry about anything, even with a 30m watch.
@@MPD90 Exactly. You get my point. It has nothing to do with the ratings and all to do with whether the seals and gaskets function properly. Yes, your diver's watch will be factory tested, but don't you think it's ridiculous to worry so much about a bit of water ? It says 30m, then it has to be waterproof. I don't care what some overcautious people say, if it says 30m it's either resistant to 30m or the manufacturer is lying. Simple, no ?
@@MPD90 Then why do they rate them to this depth ? Don't you think it would be somewhat dishonest ? And my point was that your seals and the structural integrity of your watch are the elements that guarantee its water resistance. There have been divers failing in the hot tub as well as Timex Ironmen being worn without breaking a sweat on divers' wrists. Have a look at the way your watch is built. Have a look a the caseback, at its crown. This is what allows your watch to be water resistant. Who cares that my Vostok was rated to 2 atm ? It had a threaded crown and a screw down caseback. It worked well and you could swim flawlessly with it.
The "fauxtina" doesn't bother me much. It isn't as strong as on some other watches (e.g. a Steinhart one, the Ocean Vintage Military if I'm not mistaken). And I also have the brown, "tropical" dial. It has more or less the same versatility as the black dial, it's a rarer colour and I like it a lot.
the ocd in me really appreciates that you sync the second hands before all of your videos where you show two or more watches together.

@@nerychristian Perfectly said! I still do believe in my case anyway that my watch shouldn't have more charisma than me.
Haha, ya I know what you mean. I have a few watches without a date and I glance at them looking for it sometimes as well.
Thinking about trading my mechanical to an auto. What do you think?
Have the Hamilton Khaki Field Mecanical No Date 38mm 2019 .. so far so good. Love the simplicity and history/heritage of Hamilton
I just The got the khaki field automatic 42mm with the steel strap. Love it, so clean and feels solid
Thanks for the review .
Hope you enjoyed it.
What leather strap is that from clockworksynergy? Cannot decipher what color leather it is you have in this video.

Do you know whether the current LL Bean field watch is made by Hamilton? Or did LL Bean go with another manufacturer? Great vid. Keep at it!
I owned the 38mm khaki field automatic black dial. I loved that watch. BUT the lack of AR made it extremely hard to see and appreciate the dial. I felt like 90 percent of the time I was looking at glare. I wonder how much AR or a flat crystal instead of domed would make a difference.
Did you sell it? If so, what did you get in place of it?
I bought my Auto the other way around, bought it with the black leather strap and then a few months later ordered the stainless bracelet for it.
Swap them depending on my mood, or of it's warm put a Nato on it.
It's good to have both options!
Good one Guy! I purchased the 38mm Hammie Auto about 2 weeks ago and so far the thing is running 0 to +1 day ! It is Blowing me away
It’s as accurate as my Tudor COSC Certified BB go figure . Hope it stays that way😂
I had a 42mm version and it was Horrid!
With the pre 2018 mechanical what type of bracelet would you put on it? Any recommendations would be great!
I'm not sure, Hamilton doesn't make one for it specifically. Maybe a straight lug bracelet from Strapcode.
Hey Guy: nice video. I have always liked field watches, although mine is a Timex 749905. I picked up a Hamilton Dress watch last year because I do like the brand quality. Cheers!
Which Hamilton did you get? They have so many great models.
This was a great video, very helpful and thorough. Something I think would have made it even better would be if you had included the 38mm auto version, with silver dial and stainless bracelet.
nice collection ... 2018 version is the better watch i would go for... cheers
Ya I love that one.
Great video Guy, not sure how I missed this one but glad to see it even late! The automatic looks so much bigger than the 38MM mechanical, must be the polished bezel, less crowded dial and big endlinks on the bracelet!
Yeah I would say in person the auto looks a little bigger, probably because of the bracelet, but it doesn’t feel “big”... if that makes sense.
can you please include references for all of them...thanks
They’re all current models on Hamilton’s website, other than the vintage model. Pretty easy to look up if you need a reference number.
Wait until you see the Bronze Khaki. Everything comes together on that model. I just received one as a gift. Holy cow is it a looker!
Nice video other than the lume rant. We all know it's supposed to be a fake patina and that is one reason we like those pieces...
Do you know if Hamilton has a bracelet for the 2018 no date?
They do not, that I’m aware of.
There is one for the older Khaki Field, there was a thread on WatchuSeek about it. But it's harder to find, you might have to contact Hamilton themselves to order that one.
What kinda strap on the mechanical? I didn’t find anything under clockworks synergy quick release
It's the Dapper Collection, Buffalo Brown. Here's a link on Amazon: amzn.to/2HMZN1B
Thanks, loved this video. Could you review or share thoughts about the Hamilton murph?
I have done a video on the murph watch.
@@JustBlueFish found it, thanks. Great stuff.
BEAUTIFUL HAMILTON EXCELENT WATCHES, BRASIL CONGRATULATIONs
Got one arriving in a few hours.
But for more variety the new mechanical model stands on its own a bit better.
agreed
I like them all but would go for the auto version. I also usually like getting watches on their bracelets but the gap after the end links really bothers me. I also don’t like that the center links are split down the middle.
I bought the Khaki 38 Auto on leather strap, imo the bracelet doesn't look good on it.
But was wondering that there's no Khaki King in the comparative. It brings the date complication, which is very useful.
Honestly, I'm not sure the mechanical model is very practical if you're in a hurry every day.
Thanks for watching.
The Khaki Field is one of my favorite watches, and I plan on picking up the 42mm version sometime next year.
Nice, hope you enjoy it.
Did you ever get it? I've had my 42mm Khaki Auto on a leather strap for 3-4 years now and also have two 38mm mechanicals (pre 18 with a date complication, and the newer "military homage" model..)
David Witmer I just got my 42mm auto khaki field. With the steel bracelet. Love it!!!!
I'm going to pick up a khaki field day date next week.
Nice congrats. Enjoy it.
I think its more impressive for the one on right to have the khaki mechanical printed on 6oclock also the printed “H” on 12oclock on both
Thanks for watching.
I am confused to buy the quartz or the automatic?
Please help!
What questions do you have? Let me know if I can give you a hand
Love all the watches. Thanks.
Thanks for watching.
Is your mechanical the ETA or the newer H50 movement?
Welcome back to "modest" priced watches... 🍺🍹I like auto with date.
What! I reviewed a Spinnaker like a week ago. I didn't leave affordable watches in the dust!
@@JustBlueFish well you know what I ment, Rolex and Omega classics... No harm ment, just like your field watch affinity, that's how I started to follow your chanell.
haha, I know no worries, was just messing with ya!
Where did you get the ZULU on the vintage Hamilton?
I'm wavering between the Khaki Field Mechanical and the Khaki Field Automatic, and I'm wondering which one is more resistant to scratches as an everyday watch.
Another great video thax!
Thanks buddy.
Great comparison but wouldve preferred the Khaki King to be included in this video.
Yeah could have been cool but didn’t have access to one.
@@JustBlueFish Ohh well that makes sense, Im planning to pick up the Khaki King in the near future as my first swiss watch. Hoping that it will meet my expectations!
I have reviewed it in the past. I encourage you to go watch that video if you haven’t yet.
All the watches in time together at the start was fucking dope as shit
I usually try to set all the watches to the same time if I'm showing multiple in the video.
Are the lug nuts holes the same ?
I don’t know.
Didn't know Tom Segura was doing watch reviews!
I've never compared the King to the 42mm Field, but I did review the Khaki King in the past. It wears a little bigger than my 38mm but not a ton.
I love my Khaki Murph.
Having such a hard time deciding between the auto and that 38 mm mechanical you compared right away. Love the dial and simplicity of the mechanical but feel like the auto is more wearable for me as a doctoral student. Any recommendations?
Yeah, get the auto. I have both and the auto is more a everyday watch having the date complication
So it's a year later and the pre-2018 mechanical is still available. They call it the "Officer's" field watch to distinguish it from the new one, which I think is cool. This is the one I just picked up, with the green face. Thanks.
I’m on the fence. Do you still like the pre-2018?
Generaly I don`t like only 1 thing in pilots...wich is the arrow indexes.
And there comes the automatic Hamilton. Looks much much better in my opinion.
I`ve noticed not for the first time...that steel bracelet change the pilots dramaticaly into the whole different watch.
The Hamilton Automatic is an amazing watch. I think the design, style and presentation is just about perfect.
The khaki automatic looks much better in my opinion than the mechanical. The dial has depth, the polish finish on the bezel is spot on and the lack of AR coating makes it shine in a way that only looks good on the khaki field. Its perfect
Anyone know where to find a bracelet for my khaki king?
Which model keeps the time most accurately?
The new 2018 model dial looks like it was patterned after a WWII aviation gauge... and to me it looks like it was done with a Leroy set. Now there's nothing wrong with that... just how it looks to me. It's too bad that you couldn't dig up an original Hamilton Army-issue watch so we could see just how it actually looks. Now, having said that, I would not mind having the new 2018 version, although the Automatic version would be nice as well...
Thanks for watching
good job.
I've been wanting to buy a field khaki for a while now as it would be my first higher end watch purchase but I'm kind of put off with some of the horror stories of it's water resistance
Unless it's a real dive watch, I treat most watches as if the have no water resistance. Then there's nothing to worry about.
It has more or less the same versatility as the black dial, it's a rarer colour and I like it a lot.
what about the khaki king?
Do you know of any Hamilton watch Groups on Instagram? Because I do not have a Facebook account
I’m not aware of any.
What are your thoughts on the khaki king?
The khaki king is an outstanding watch . It's 40mm
