Just starting out with family portraits for my church. Looks like I have a LOT of things to consider not only about the family but the location as well. Thank you for the insightful approach.
I just set up a light weight gold or white umbrella with soft burst of flash back behind me if the family is stationary. Needs a trigger, but small and portable.
How did it go. I have first my family photoshoot by month end but I only have a nikon D3400 with its kit lens and a speedlight and I have no idea how to go about it and what additional gears I need to get the job done. Pls reply
What is a "white over silver" reflector? Is the assistant holding two reflectors? i.e. a silver behind a white scrim? So not too much of the flash is lost?
hi sir. Thanks for this video. I have one question. and hope u can help me. what you can say about rogue diffuser? or what u recommend for outdoor shot sir. simple setup. thanks a lot.
Wow I loved this content.I have a doubt, what if we use 85mm or135mm lens, I mean the subject will be far and the reflector cannot bounce back to subject face as illustrated here! In that case only strobe is the only way to go or is there any other options? Pls reply
Could probably still bounce it by removing it and triggering it in the same setup but the photographer at a further distance. You’d have to prop the speed light though. Using a strobe sounds like it would be far simpler when working at a distance.
For a larger group, say 10+, would you be able to use this technique? You would have to move away quite a bit from the group and the flash would be losing so much of its power? Have you ever tried this with a speedlight or would you switch to a stronger flash? Thank you.
Hey Isabelle! For a group of that size I think it's best to use an off-camera flash with am umbrella. A speedlight is more than enough if your lighting conditions are right (shaded area, less ambient light), however, if you are shooting in mid-day sun then we suggest using a strobe with higher power. Don't you think the bounced light is a bit harsh? Probably we are viewing this in Srgb format, I am getting that feel or the apple screen is giving that impression. I am sure the original pic must be looking much better.😊

You'd be surprised how distance affects your DOF. Considering how much space he has around the family using a 50mm, I would say he is far enough to keep their face in focus. Try it out.
All of their faces are within the focal plane. As long as all of the faces of your subjects are in the same line (focal plane), they should all be in focus.
These are ok, but it's obvious a flash was used. Just watch Julia Trotti's videos on natural light photography, or shooting under harsh sunlight. The results are way better than this.
There's more than one style of photos, though. If you don't like it, that's fine. It doesn't mean that flash was used poorly. It just means you like a more natural look. Besides, he already said in the video that it's a stylistic choice that's totally up to you.

Absolutely loved the case study! The initial thoughts, how to tackle challenges, your final solutions. THAT is teaching. Big thanks!
I just did family pictures yesterday, it was exhausting because you're right about that you had to move quickly and fun at the same time.
Jason Auw lol
I can't wait to try this on my next family session 👍
So stinking good! Never thought about lighting like this.
Wow...this was great info. I really like you idea of bouncing from the speedlight!!
This guy’s great! For some reason he reminds me of David Copperfield
I learned to twist the on-camera-flash to bounce off the gold reflector - that's important and enough for me :)
SUPER. SUPER , THE BEST

I really appreciate your lessons... so well explained and easy to follow
Thanks for many helpful tips and an on location light setup
Very good video. I want to start doing this with my family, and this was a great tutorial.
Thank you so much for those great tips!
Stumbled across your tutorial: so informative and helpful. Thank you.
great video!!
Good shot of the Colliers
Thanks for the video. Just starting use flash and this helped
Awesome tutorial.. have a few families coming up soon, going to have this in my back pocket now!!
Great video and helpful simple suggestions. Thank you!
SO SIMPLE!! YESS
Thank you , i am going to use this bounce idea !
What do you do if you don't have an assistant to hold up reflectors/etc. ? Working with one flashgun ?
Liverpix put the reflector on a stand.
stand

How about using a flash cord and a hold the flash on a monopod using my left hand?
I have my first family photoshoot on Saturday and I am thinking of using my 75-300mm lens is that good for family portraits?

Love your channel. Discovered you on the fstopper challenge.

I have the same question.
You're a genius!!
what camera was used for this shot?
Thanks for the video. what f,stop you shoot this Portrait ,you did not have a lightmeter how you determine what amateur you use thanks

Thank you!!
Hpw do you turn the flash to the side?
Thanks a lot! ) Question about zoom angle on speedlight. You leave it on 24mm?
at that distance from the reflector, I would.
Do you have tutorials for those of us doing this without an assistant? (I have been doing this many years and that is not going to happen.)
Laurie Callahan Use a light stand, flash, and umbrella.

Not a pro. Just a hobby. Not going to use the reflectors and stand a lot. Can I rent them anywhere?
They are so cheap you'd be better buying them. Seriously I think my reflector stand was like 30 and the reflector was like 25.
I know im 7 years late, but what type of speedlight did you use?
Go to hell!
where can I get a shirt like that?
What the Time of shoots?
Whats the name of the grid that you have on the speed light?

Cool, thanks.
Great video and tips!!
But at 6:13 'Catelyn spraining her wrist while Mom and Dad are holding her hand' sounds bad.
hey does anyone have a good flash to buy that can get the job done and isnt too complicated. i own the yn600ex rt and hate it.
E- man Buy the Godox TT685.
why do you hate the Yongnuo though?
E- man i have the yn 568 exii. dope. looking to get the yn685 to use with yn622c Tx kit.
it always misses and lights up the wrong subject i tryed many things but now its a bit better on a 6d
E- man maybe adjust the outputs and zoom
E- man do you use TTL or manual settings?
I don't get how F2 you have all their faces in focus.
They're shooting at 50mm, its wide enough that i think f2 would work as long as their faces are relatively in line
Their fairly wide at 50mm, the d.o.f seems pretty accurate in the photo

Notice how he told them to not be too far infront or behind each other
f 2.0 for a group shot? wow!
Nice pic.
how is that on camera lighting ?
Because the flash is mounted on the hot shoe of the camera
i think you should've put a reflector on the right side of the subject
Don’t like blown highlights.
Only thing I don’t like is the tree growing out of the girls head😅

Dads legs ruin this shot. The lighting is good, dads legs are too prominent in the frame. Just my opinion.
Talking too much!! Show results!
The photo turned out great but the parents are so fake it's sickening...
