  • The plastic door handles break right at the mounting bolts on these Buick Lucerne. Probably the same on other full size GM cars.
This video was made as a demonstration on how to repair things and should not be done with out the proper training and safety equipment. Thank you SO much for this video! I decided to try to replace my broken door handle myself. After watching your video at least ten times over the last week, I decided to give it a go. You gave me confidence that it wasn't too difficult.
My greatest challenges were unlinking the door pulley and dealing with the three door handle screws. I lost two screws to inner depths of the door frame never to be found again. The screws kept falling out of the socket wrench. I came up with the ingenious idea to cover the heads of the screws with 3m emblem glue. That kept the screws inside the socket wrench! Luckily I had the foresight to park at an Advanced Auto store. I Ended up having to buy new screws and a socket wrench extension so that I could screw in the screws right through the holes instead of reaching up from the bottom. Putting it all back together was the easiest part.
Invest in a socket wrench extension so you don't have to try to screw the screws from below. It's much easier doing it through those two small holes that are level with the door handle screw holes. Secondly, make sure you have extra screws and either a magnetic socket wrench set or some type of adhesive to keep the screws from falling out and being devoured by the door frame.

Take a little bit of black electrical tape and put that on the head of the bolts to give a tighter fit to the socket wrench if you dont have magnetic type.

I have a 2011 model that I just had to change the handle on. They must have made the doors differently between those years because I was easily able to reach in through the big square hole in the middle of the door frame and take the bolts off and on by hand.

WOW! That video was SUPER helpful. Thank you SOOOO much! It wasn't easy by any means, but it took me and my dad a little over an hour to complete the job. Everything went as you stated. I took a shortcut and did not unhook the electrical piece. Also didn't unhook that other part. As you can tell I know nothing about cars and was able to do it. Neither am I anything close to a handyman. The toughest part was getting the bolts lined up and screwed back in to the new handle. It DEFINiTELY helped to have someone else helping here and there and holding a flashlight. Thank you again!

I have this problem in my 2011. Had a real cold snap here in Indiana, and it broke on me. I've been able to tolerate it so far, but sooner or later, it will fail completely. I knew it couldn't be too hard to do, and this confirms that. I wish they made the thing out of a better material so the thread area wouldn't break like that. Thank you.

Here is a another approach to solve the loose handle problem. After reviewing these videos and seeing that the replacement handles have the same design defect, that is the knurled inserts can eventually come loose again, I fixed my neighbors door handle in this fashion. I used a #6 stainless steel finishing washer and a #6X32X2 inch oval head stainless steel screw. I drilled a hole through the handle centered between the moveable door handle and the lock oval and centered from top to bottom. i drilled the hole through the handle and the pot metal housing that holds the lock and the two bolts that hold the pot metal to the knurled threaded inserts. I used a 9/64 drill bit. This bit was small enough to have the hole for the 6X32 screw to tap itself when threaded through the pot metal hole. Then with the inner door panel removed, I removed the rubber boot holding the lock rod as it rises upward. From this door panel oval hole you can see the threaded screw. I then used a #6X32 stainless steel nylon insert locking nut to thread onto the screw. I used a 1/4-inch 5X16 socket with a few flat nuts inside the socket to position the locking nut just at the end of the socket. With a 1/4 X3/8 adapter and an 8-inch long 3/8 extension onto a 3/8 ratchet, I threaded the nut onto the screw and tightened it down. Have a helper or your other hand hold the screw head with a Phillips screwdriver while tightening the nut. If you do not mind the very subtle appearance of the screw head and finishing washer, this very economical mechanical solution should work very well for the life of the vehicle.

Had the same problem. First time I used crazy glue. Didn't last. Got some two part epoxy and applied it with a stick thickly coating those cracked areas. Pushed it slowly with some force at the end. Let it sit for several hours. That was months ago. Whose stupid idea was it to make plastic door handles.. There was a song, "some people are made of plastic." There's too much plastic on the cars today...

Please get a tripod or something to hold up the camera when you need two hands to work. The steps when you needed two hands are important to watch. I don't want to possibly break other parts because of my gorilla hands.

2011 has 2 wire hooks in the center pointing from the top instead of the clips shown here on 2008. The door panel would need to be pushed up. after releasing perimeter clips.

I have one of these cars same year and I mean I do love it but I hate it. The engineer who designed this car must have been on drugs or something or just not with it mentally he must have not have finished kindergarten. Because it's just horrible everything goes wrong on these cars, the handles the fuse boxes the sensors, parts in the engine, the struts the rear shocks, the lane departure sensor camera. And all these parts are like two three $400 a piece or more, everything I mean I can name a hell of a lot more and make a list on what goes wrong with this car. Yeah the 3.8, 6 cylinder everybody says is a great engine but the car itself is just trash if you don't have money in the bank, and keep spending money in it, do not get this car because it will cost you a fortune to keep it up. Oh I forgot to mention the transmission too is funny it jerks back and forth after so many miles. And everyone that owned one of these cars or still owns one knows what I'm talking about. It's a car you either love or hate and when you love it you hate it at the same time. It really is a love-hate relationship
