    this is awesome. you saved me 150.00. the tutorial was spot on and user friendly.
    i will add that for those performing this task; when you remove the bolts from the handle nuts be careful not to let them drop into the door. this cost me an extra 20 minutes.

    Very good explanation of door panel connections. If no screws are visible you don't know how the inside door handle is attached to the door. I had to find out just like you did. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. The epoxy inside the door handle also works very well as mine has been holding for years now.

    I actually took a short cut...didn’t take off the door panel, pulled out handle some from door, managed to put JB weld on handle and stripped out inserts, let JT weld get just a tiny bit gooey, then pressed the door handle back in place. It’s actually held. Takes just a few minutes and if it doesn’t work, you can go back and take off the whole panel.
    Ridiculous how cheaply made these handles are...who engineers this stuff? I’m sure they just wanted to save 1 ounce.

    • @DLBlckwl

      Yes, these particular engineers sucked. I've been a huge Buick guy for decades now. Have owned several. But I have to say this is one of the worst-designed Buicks I've ever seen. I have a love-hate relationship with my Lucerne CXS. Love the easy-to-clean 18-inch chrome wheels, the V8 (well kinda- the Supercharged V6 on my Park Avenue was way better) and the sunroof. But several quirky designs are what bring the hate. For example, you have to take off the whole front body cowling to replace even one light bulb.

      I know it's been a while since you posted your response, but those inserts, how are they attached? Do screws thread into them, or pins? My friend's just broke and I will probably try this your way. If they are threaded, doesn't the door panel have to come off to access the bolts/screws?

    Excellent because my drivers door was removed by Best buy for speaker installation and it’s moving in the center by the handle, I’m going to give it a good hard knock with my hand... if this works to lock the glides it will save me a 4 hour trip to have the Geeksquad fix it....I’m sure I can do it myself, other than this they did a great job and I don’t hold this against them as it’s not obvious..thank you for the valuable pointers.

I have a 07 lucerne, I have to do this repair, after repairing the fender ornament that came off, sealing the trunk to stop water leaks, repairing a roof decorative strip, not to mention a engine mount, and various oil gasket leaks, etc. I've never owned a car thats fallen apart like this..pieces and parts just come apart or fall off! I'll never buy another GM product after this! No quality in parts, assembly, or installation but just cheaply made!

    • @justins9532

      Oh the cheap felt stickers in the rear fender which inevitably fail and allow water to fill the trunk. How frustrating the engineering of that is! Drove me crazy for weeks until I found the problem of that leak. One failed terribly and the other side was well on its way to failing as well

    Great video A Plus on that. Yeah the JB weld will work if it was done correctly I swear by that stuff. You might have to put a couple small coats as you're putting those pieces back in and then like you said surround it with JB weld but do two small coats separate times and I believe it would work 100%. It's better than spending money on a new one why it's like five to eight dollars for JB weld. But great video thank you. I'm having a problem with my rear driver side passenger door handle it's getting loose and I'm sure the front one driver side I believe is just starting to get a tiny little bit loose so I'm sure I'm going to have to be working on that I'll get somebody to do it

I was so frustrated trying to figure out how to get the door panel off, that I eventually borrowed my sister's phone so I could at least film this after-the-fact instructional video to help anyone else that couldn't figure out how to get the interior panel off. • @mike407r
    @mike407r Год назад

    I’ve been trying to replace the door speakers and the clips around the panel are no problem but it’s the two clips that hold the inside door handle on you talked about for the life of me I can’t get that to release.

    • @ljdavecolorado534
      @ljdavecolorado534  Год назад

      Once the clips around the perimeter of the door are popped out, to release the clips behind the inside door handle, you just push the inside panel straight up. To get those to reconnect when you’re done snap all of the perimeter clips in place and just hit the door handle with your hand hard enough to force then to reengage.

  • @fcatusha

    Here is a another approach to solve the loose handle problem. After reviewing these videos and seeing that the replacement handles have the same design defect, that is the knurled inserts can eventually come loose again, I fixed my neighbors door handle in this fashion. I used a #6 stainless steel finishing washer and a #6X32X2 inch oval head stainless steel screw. I drilled a hole through the handle centered between the moveable door handle and the lock oval and centered from top to bottom. i drilled the hole through the handle and the pot metal housing that holds the lock and the two bolts that hold the pot metal to the knurled threaded inserts. I used a 9/64 drill bit. This bit was small enough to have the hole for the 6X32 screw to tap itself when threaded through the pot metal hole. Then with the inner door panel removed, I removed the rubber boot holding the lock rod as it rises upward. From this door panel oval hole you can see the threaded screw. I then used a #6X32 stainless steel nylon insert locking nut to thread onto the screw. I used a 1/4-inch 5X16 socket with a few flat nuts inside the socket to position the locking nut just at the end of the socket. With a 1/4 X3/8 adapter and an 8-inch long 3/8 extension onto a 3/8 ratchet, I threaded the nut onto the screw and tightened it down. Have a helper or your other hand hold the screw head with a Phillips screwdriver while tightening the nut. If you do not mind the very subtle appearance of the screw head and finishing washer, this very economical mechanical solution should work very well for the life of the vehicle.

    Hi Dave, great video. Can you buy those inserts for the handle? Also how long do you let the JB Weld dry before putting the handle on. The door handle came loose after washing the car in -35 weather. Dumb move.

    • @ljdavecolorado534
      @ljdavecolorado534  6 лет назад

      The knurled inserts are most likely still threaded on the bolts behind the door handle. You'll see them when you remove the bolt for the front part of the handle, (from inside the door). I'd let the JB Weld dry overnight for best results.

    Hi Dave, I started taking my door apart tonight but stopped when I felt that I was applying too much pressure to remove the clips around the door. How much pressure do you need to apply to remove the clips and are you prying away the door as you move down from clip to clip starting on the left top side?

    • @ljdavecolorado534
      @ljdavecolorado534  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Scott
      It can take a fair amount of pressure to get the fasteners to release. They are made of plastic, and are kind of shaped like a mini Christmas Tree. As you pry them out of the hole they are in, you may fell them slowly back out, like releasing one row of branches at a time until they fully come out of the hole. You can pick up a tool designed to help remove them for a few dollars at any auto parts store. The tool is a pry bar with a forked end, about 8 inches long. Thinking as I type this, any flat pry bar would probably work to get around the fastener and help pop it out. Once you get one to release, you'll know what it feels like, and it should be easy to get the rest to pop out too.

    Hello, this is Dre. I have a question about the installation of the door handle........, I wanted to know what did you use to tighten the door handle down with like a ratchet set or a screwdriver bit set just curious because I have the same problem as this video my handle broke and I'm trying to replace it. So what did you use to tighten down the screws, so the handle can be nice and tight.

    • @ljdavecolorado534

    • @ljdavecolorado534
      @ljdavecolorado534  9 лет назад +1

      Dianne Guzzle unfortunately, I doubt that it would hold up for very long, if at all. You can certainly try it, as worst case, you may have to replace the handle anyway. I'd tape some newspaper over the door to protect the painted surface from the epoxy incase you drip some. Pull the handle away from the door and coat as much of the knurled inserts with 2 part epoxy or JB Weld as you can reach and push the handle back over them. Let it sit for as long as possible, (up to 48 hours) before trying to open the door. My guess is it will fail pretty quickly, but you never know. My recommendation is to bite the bullet and pull the inner door panel off so you can really get in there and fix the broken area in the handle as shown in the video. This is actually a pretty easy job for anyone that does their own maintenance on cars. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

      If you can get the door open using either the inside or outside levers, then remove the interior panel and look for linkage rods that are no longer attached at the door latch or handle. The plastic clips that hold them in place may have broken. If neither the inside out outside handles work to open the door, it’s going to be way harder to fix, because you have to get the door open to service it, and if they both failed at the same time, I’d guess it is likely the latch itself that is broken.
      Good luck!
