Caustic soda (not baking soda) is what is used in oven cleaner for cutting grease, but it attacks aluminium so not good to use for cleaning a head. The best carby cleaner and carbon remover/softener I've found is Threebond Engine Conditioner. Spray it on, let it sit for 20min, and then give it a scrub and rinse it off with regular carby cleaner (brass parts, eg, carb jets, need to be sprayed with WD40 before assembly to stop them tarnishing) Also when rebuilding a carb/replacing the gaskets, thoroughly soak the gaskets with WD40 before fitting them, and don't use any goo on them. This stops the gaskets from sticking and tearing later on down the track if you need to pull the carb apart for whatever reason. The way you fitted the new clutch release bearing wasn't right. You need to push on the center part of the bearing only. Pressing or hammering the outer part can damage the bearing surface which will cause the bearing to fail prematurely.
Awesome! Yeah, I've experienced caustic soda eating at aluminium before - if I do use it on Alu I try keep the exposure time as short as possible. Thanks for the info I'll definately try that stuff next time! I was wondering what I should do with the gaskets! For the moment I put them in dry and was going to keep an eye out for leaks! Will definately keep the wd-40 in mind :) As for the bearing, I hoped nobody would look that hard haha I was in the moment, and didn't have anything that would fit around the inner ring but not obstruct the part I was pressing in. Thanks so much for the advice and detailed comment!!!
At 2:23 you remove something called a wash plug? I wasn’t sure what you said. On my A15 I’m noticing that I have an oil leak and someone told me it was the rear main seal. Is this the rear main seal? I wish someone did a video on that so I could see😊👊🏼
The part at 2:23 is called a 'freeze plug' or 'welsh plug', I think it was used for the casting, but also to remove frozen water too? I'm actually not sure haha
Hi there! Thanks so much! I was able to find a pdf online of the scans of the original user manual. There I found the correct sequences for assembly and disassembly, valve clearances - and even graphs of the valve geometry!
Very informative video and very clear.. I love your videos. I am a newbie and still researching. I wanna do what u did. Rebuild similar engine. A detailed video will be very helpful to new beginners or u can share the link if u have already done it.. my question is do we adjust those valves or not. Probably yes but how. I wil get manual to supplement my little knowledge. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks so much Daniel, the adjusting of the valves are done with the help of a 'feeler gauge' - the adjustment ensures that the correct amount of play between the rocker arms and the top of the valve stems so that the amount of intake and exhaust is consistent, as well as making sure the parts do not wear down mechanically.
Bro! Please do create a video or can you please perhaps send me the sequence and torque settings for the complete head. Looks like im going to also look into refurbing my complete motor at home with some extra mods. Ported head and performance cam..
I'm thinking of doing double springs and solid rocker spacers in later down the track! I really want to get it to a great base and start doing mods ^^ If you shoot me a message on instagram I can send you the info :)
@@32Builds will definitely drop you a message soon bro but on facebook via your facebook page. No instagram 😂 would love to know more abput your plans for the sunny going foward and can also show you mine. Will message you now Mike👌👍
You could do a compression test if the motor is all closed up. Otherwise a visual inspection and using the proper bore gauge. Its not something I'm looking to do at the moment so I left mine as is :)
Cheers for that! Yeah, will definitely need some tuning once I get it into a driving state! The Cherrys look awesome, they remind me of the eb civics which I love :)
Hello, can you tell me what gasket sealant are you using? I'm going to change my thermostat, the gasket sealant work well? And what the size of your thermostat? 54.5mm, 54mm?
The Welsh plug presses in and it has sort of tapered sides. If you hammer the rim of one side - the plug will pivot and the opposite side will pop out towards you. Then its a matter of yanking it out with pliers or vice grips!
Hi mate, if you checkout the datsun1200 wiki page you can find the correct torque sequence :) otherwise feel free to message me on instagram and I can help point you in the right direction!
Nothing on the head gasket, you rely on the flatness of the block and head as well as the correct torque and tightening sequence. The the thermostat housing I used aviation gasket sealant, which is good cause it doesn't squeeze out as much leaving floating gasket maker running through your system. I would recommend though, not slathering it around the actual thermostat though - gonna be a bitsh to clean whenever I want to replace the thermostat. The sealant between the thermostat and housing is good enough I think :)
Hi very intersted about your videos also need big help please i need to know about evaporating system of datsun b211/ 1200 diagram and full explanation with carburetor vacuum system thanks
Hi! You should check out the datsun1200 wiki and also check out the Japanese Domestic Market parts catalogue. They have a breakdown of every system in the car! I will be hooking those up in the future tho :) But I'm not up to that part yet hehe
I did a bunch of reading around and for cold clearances I've found 0.25mm and 0.35mm. Theres a good write up on it on the datsun 1200 tech wiki as well. I settled for a 0.3mm clearance right in between haha
These motors don't warp much like engines in a V- configuration pushing high power. I checked all the clearances before reassembling the motor and everything was flat to the tolerated spec. This isn't the first time I'll work on my A12 so maybe I'll take it to get ported and polished in the future 🙂
Videos are awsome man! I got a 76 I’m building ! Awsome to see ya smashing it out
Thanks so much!! I love hearing that other people are doing the same too!
Tackling my head gasket on my A14 tomorrow
This video is awesome
Ooh hope it went well!! It's seriously so satisfying and such a good feeling!!
Love your creativity of working with what you have available!
Cheers Chris!
Do you have a video for the valve clearances?
Awww the slippers and the kitty bow tie! and so happy for you and your engine. :)
Hahaha thanks!!

Nice knees man 👍🏽
New valve springs are a must since the engine will not rev to redline on high mileage valve springs.
Hi man like to see the details of the valves adjustment
I used a feeler gauge and set the gap to 0.3mm clearance :)
I would like to get more details, since I want to restore my Nissan 1400 engine.
Hi man awesome job.thumbs up
Thank you! :))
How the hell did you get the thermostat out. I can't get my old busted one out.
Your videos are brilliant. Alot of information. Where can I see more in detail about setting the valves?

Any thoughts how to decrease fuel consumption in the cylinder head??

Thanks! You are amazing too :)
Hi. Iam installing a cylinder head today. What is the cylinder head torque specs and valve adjustment specs?
Have you ever been in a Datsun 1200 coupe with a 1600 a block reving to 10,000 rpm gear changes?
No I haven't! But I've heard even going A15 makes a big difference!
Try finding the finnish popular datsun 100a/datsun 1000 aka nissan Cherry Quick reminder: datsun 100a is a fwd forward wheel drive and it needs tuning

Tourqe specs for cylinder head please

What was the torque for head bolts in the three stages ?
I've actually forgotten since its been a while, but I wouldn't think it would matter too much. I may have gone by ~30% increments
@@32Builds thanks for the reply bro, love the videos.
Where are the gx high port Cyl heads
Is that a thing?? :o Need to look into it haha
Just want to get her back on the road again first before I focus on modifications :))
Another great video! Just wondering what grease you used on the shaft when putting the thrust race bearing back in?
The pink stuff? It came with my bearing replacement :)
Top top. Can you tell me where do you get the new flywheel? Thanks
Hi i got it from BProjects Japan from their ebay page :)
