  • Very small discussion about ranges of HRC and why I think things are so far off... some of the time. Also, a few ideas to make things better!

    St Nick's Knives just dropped an exclusive Manix 2 in 4v, which sold out in 3 hours. I expect the knife to have a monster-cutting performance.

    Killer video Alex! Excellent points throughout. The industry is already changing and it will continue to change as customers priorities (HRC, BTE thickness, etc.) change. Keep it up! 👊

    Saw you over on the Sharp Talk podcast with Tom and the gang, proceeded to find my way over here. Loving the videos man! What's crazy about this test, if I have my numbers and info right from you videos, is the Sage 2 in S30V you reground to 0.007" bte out cut both of these Para 2's by a decent margin...

    One point really hits home here for me. Hobbyists who argue against experts can be incredibly frustrating. It’s like, I know you’ve experienced something in one way…but you have to consider other overriding variables, man. You also have to understand that when someone has dedicated their professional life to a discipline, they’ll forget more than you’ll ever know tenfold. I’m a professional guitarist and when I look at the unbelievable fucking minutiae that some amateur guitarists obsess over, it blows my mind. Who cares about your .4476uf tone capacitor vs his .4483uf tone capacitor, man. Learn to play the thing right and it’s gonna make the type of difference that dwarfs literally *all of that* shit. When a knife maker or steel expert speaks, I listen…

      Yeah man. A lot of constrains are also limited by manufacturing capabilities. Some tech is there but at a cost. It really has a lot to do with what you are capable of doing.

    Have you tested the Vargo sintered titanium knife?

      I can’t say that I have. But I do think sintered knives are the wave of the further. Essentially zero grinding and you can get any blade shape or grind you desire.

      @@alexsteingraber I think so too. One of my major interests is creating or identifying processes for hobbyists & artisans to make sintered steel parts. Supersolidus liquid phase sintering is very promising, as it can achieve full density without HIP. My ideal would be to combine that with gel-casting to get the shape. Another possibility is to find a HIP service that does small batches - there's a company here that does small batch platinum casting HIP processing in small quantities for jewelry (along with 316L), and I'm hopeful that they would be willing to do blade stuff.
      There's also a cool opportunity for bespoke blade steels using blended master alloy powders. You could even do gas nitriding prior to sintering to achieve a nitrogen steel.
      Unfortunately none of that can happen until I have shop space.

      knickly Dude! Yes! Honestly, they have desk top injection molding machines, why not something similar that can press parts for PM steels and then do your own sintering in an oven!? Idk. I think it’s deff going to take off at some point. Someone needs to make a PM steel press for the desktop that can run parts. Game changer for sure! Thanks for watching man! 👊🏻🍻

      Awesome news, basically a cardboard murderer once thined out! Any particular edge grit finish? I usually polish then micro bevel a 600 grit at the edge. Does 4v benefit from coarser edge finish?

      @@nlennon24 I’m bias but I run most everything at either a 60 grit or 240 grit veneve stone. I feel like edge finish should be a choice of the user. Also experiment. It’s fun to run different edges and see what happens.

    Great video! I liked the subtle background music, not sure if it was a playlist but, it's been a while since I've heard Taking Back Sunday.
    I guess a good place to plant a flag would be establishing what minimum HRC each steel should be run at. You made a good point in regards to affordability, it's much easier for a large company to take on the additional costs for abrasives to work high HRC steels and spread that out with a small price increase. We can't expect the best but, we can figure out where the minimum standard should be. This should be a main goal of Spyderco sprint runs, exotic steels and max performance.
    IMO custom fixed blades for everyday use can benefit from maximizing steel potential (that's going to be my own approach at least).
    I agree that makers of custom folders wouldn't gain very much from pouring money into better heat treats with the massive cost that goes into making them already. As far as I can tell it's not really much of an interest to their customers who are looking more at design, grinding aesthetics and action.

      Agreed. I'd take the highest point on the sheet and aim for that every time, I think people would be happy about that.
      But yeah, I don't expect any custom folder makers to even want to entertain this, their customs are more than likely outside of a lot of peoples affordability for favor of design and mechanics. I would expect larger companies like Spyderco, benchmade, Cold Steel, etc. to certainly offer better performance at a price point that satisfies cost of consumables and makes the knife affordable enough for most people to obtain it. It's math, not hard. Hahaha.
