I love 10v its just very hard to grind post heat treat above 65hrc very very hard to grind
@@robertodurann3798 what belts do you typically run when grinding?
speaking of the heat treat on the k390 and 10v, would love to see a test between the PM2 k390 and the seki k390 mainly the stretch 2 being so close in geometry to the PM2, as stated the golden k390 is 63 wile the seki is about 65.
I learned a lot from this. Nice 1 mate , thanks :)
I like your opinions on this, and i love the older coheed i hear.
3° is not the micro-bevel, it’s the primary bevel and 20° is the cutting edge. The 2 outer dots are the secondary bevel/cutting edge and the micro-bevel. The micro is the outer most dot.
Your content was excellent. I’d suggest using fewer adjectives. Perhaps you trying to hit a particular audience. If you want to really grow and sell your business/services on RUclips or and social media outlets. I very much encourage you to model those sites that are hugely successful. Again, great content and thoroughness.
Hey, What grit do you like Maxamet at for a "Toothy Edge" Thanks for the video. : )
240 veneve diamond works well for that. I also like maxamet off a 1k shapton pro stone. Both are vastly different but do provide a nice toothy sticky edge after a 9mic-1mic diamond strop. I use Stroppy stuff, but your preferred choice would work as well.
St Nick's Knives just dropped an exclusive Manix 2 in 4v, which sold out in 3 hours. I expect the knife to have a monster-cutting performance. Thanks for the cut test. It takes a lot of hard work to make the video. 😎👍
What is weight of DMT Dia-Fold Magna alone ?
Dude don’t you design knives?
Damn man why’d you stop doing vids?
Shout out for mentioning Phil Wilson. Seamount Knife Works. Great guy!
Looks like a POS. But it seems to work right. Too bad the shop it was in treated it like crap.
The Bento Box Para 3s have been tested at 63-64, which is the recommended HRC?
Low temperature temper ftw. I've been talking with troopah knives. And he is thinking even high speed steels like M4 don't need a high temp temper, and will see the same benefits as we do with these other steels. He's one of the people i trust on this kind of stuff, along with triple b, and dr. Larrin. He did a toughness test so far but it had some noise in the data. But looks promising.
Are you still doing regrinds?
Do you have info about maintenance? Do you have to lube it?
I have an owners manual. You oil it but not often. Everything is enclosed. So you maintain as needed.
I have a manual that I found that I think will help. But I have an issue where all the parts move fine. But when I place a piece of aluminum in to test, the moment I attempt to turn the screw, it acts like it's stuck. Have you had an issue like that or know what it could be?
@@feslerae Huh. That’s odd. Never had that issue. I’d reach out to www.buehler.com give them a call. They own the Wilson brand and are super helpful with technical questions like that.
Just got a kizer mini sheepdog in 4v. Kizer responded In email about their hardness aim of 64. Roughly How thin should it be handle behind the edge? Thanks in advance bro! Just subbed
At 64 HRC it should be good at .010 bte. Thanks for the support! 🙌🏼
Awesome news, basically a cardboard murderer once thined out! Any particular edge grit finish? I usually polish then micro bevel a 600 grit at the edge. Does 4v benefit from coarser edge finish?
@@nlennon24 I’m bias but I run most everything at either a 60 grit or 240 grit veneve stone. I feel like edge finish should be a choice of the user. Also experiment. It’s fun to run different edges and see what happens.
Today, 22 sep 22, after watching your latest IG post with all you fancy gizmos, I decided to take a walk down memory lane. You ever on occasion, look back on how much you have grown. WOW!!!
Looks like a fuckin good way to learn how to sharpen those fuckin knives. I have a question that might sound fuckin stupid, why do you need to get rid of that fuckin burr ?
I purchased an old Clark that looks similar to yours. I cleaned it up a little but I’m have a lot of problems getting even close to an accurate reading. I may need to get a new indenter. Also it does not lower onto the block slowly. The cylinder has oil and the adjuster for the rate of decent is fully closed. More repairs I guess. I may have to get a different one.
The update in your video description answers a question I had years ago when I first read about the product.
Dang, you know a test has gone well when you run out of cardboard and can still keep going. Thanks for all the information, and asking them instead of guessing. Timeless video that will continue to help everyone looking at the fastpak and rainier knives reputation.
Thanks for showing it on the hip. People usually don't. Thanks for the upload.
You do realize theres another spot to put the guide rod so you don't flip it around like a fiddle like you did at all. You flip it over and do the other side
Fuck yeah..like a fucking fiddle ..frogs Dick 🤣
I’m not sure exactly how the Wilson is calibrated. But with most machines, you can calibrate it yourself. It’s slightly tedious, but easy, if you’re careful. There’s no need to pay a company to do this unless your work requires traceable accuracy. I’ve done it numerous times over the years. By the way, you’re not supposed to use the bottom of the test sample. It’s only calibrated on the top surface, and there’s no way to know what the bottom is hardened to. Additionally, the raised metal around the indentations when on the bottom, will give an incorrect reading as the sample will “give” when the test is being done, so throw that double side used sample away, as it’s useless.
Shave cats 😂
I used to feel the same way about diamonds. I didnt like using anything, but my Japanese water stones for a long time. Eventually that changed for me. Dont know why, but now I just like to use whatever I feel is best for the knife I'm sharpening. I even use a couple oil stones now.
63hrc is not soft at all man 😂
For k390 it is. It’s all relative. There’s like 20% carbide, you’d definitely benefit from a higher hrc. It’s like seeing s30v at 58.
Crap so does that mean my elmax zt has a bad heat treat?
Not bad. Just not optimal. The only way to tell if it’s bad is with a SEM scanning electron microscope. So let’s assume it’s just not optimal. You should be fine though.
@@alexsteingraber and it's reasons like that of kind of steered away from ZT thank you for the info I really appreciate the response
@@soullessone_edc6226 Of course man. And I don’t want to discourage you from buying a design you like. If it sparks joy. Get it. But just keep in mind that when you manufacture thousands of knives they get bulk heat treated. Some get optimally hard. Others don’t. They test a range of them. If they are in spec then they ship them. That’s just how high volume Manufacturing works.
Atdi nice
Just started regrinding, and trying to make my own knives. Man. It's got a pretty decent learning curve coming from sharpening. I thought there would be more crossover.
Nice. I wish more people would push geometry. Great steel+great heat treat+great geometry= a great knife. If any of those aren't up to par, it's going to throw everything off. Idk why people wanna pay all this money for some thick ass S35VN, or m390 (not that there is anything wrong with m390) with a titanium handle. I guess, having a knife that cuts well isn't that important to a lot of knife guys.
Just want to say, I wish these videos were more popular. I think hearing this stuff would be great for the community to learn. Keep doing these please.
Gotta love cobalt steels. Don't tell anyone I said this, but vg10 with its cobalt in it, isn't actually that bad. If heat treated with high hardness in mind.
Man. You seemed so angry the whole time. Maybe It just seems like it because I don't know you, but there definitely feels like there is a lot of pent up rage in your voice.
Preach it brother
Let’s do it again K390 - I’m in!!
One point really hits home here for me. Hobbyists who argue against experts can be incredibly frustrating. It’s like, I know you’ve experienced something in one way…but you have to consider other overriding variables, man. You also have to understand that when someone has dedicated their professional life to a discipline, they’ll forget more than you’ll ever know tenfold. I’m a professional guitarist and when I look at the unbelievable fucking minutiae that some amateur guitarists obsess over, it blows my mind. Who cares about your .4476uf tone capacitor vs his .4483uf tone capacitor, man. Learn to play the thing right and it’s gonna make the type of difference that dwarfs literally *all of that* shit. When a knife maker or steel expert speaks, I listen…
Yeah man. A lot of constrains are also limited by manufacturing capabilities. Some tech is there but at a cost. It really has a lot to do with what you are capable of doing.
I’m torn between this one and the benchmade altitude. What do you think?
Honestly if you have larger hands. Altitude. If you have smaller hands the fast pack.
@@alexsteingraber I just don't trust Benchmade's heat treatment and not burning the edge unlike Rainier or Alex's knives.
@@801tbHmmmm. I think Rainier has a newer slightly larger model out as well. Can’t remember the name.
@@alexsteingraber Basecamp. I have it and it's great. Good option for a little bigger blade than the original or a shark.
