I moved to Croatia from Sydney 13 years ago with my wife and it is the best move I have ever made. It is so much easier to live here than Sydney. I don't have to struggle for anything and the Croatians are wonderful people. Nobody ever gave me any trouble, people have been very good to me so far. I would have to concur with everything Paul has said but one thing is for sure, coming from Australia, you just have to get used to the way they drive.
Thanks Paul for your humble statement... I am married to my Croatian wife for about 28 years. I had been working with UN within UNTEAS for two years 1996-1997. Now with both our children we moved to live in Croatia again. I am here in Osijek almost one year and a half. I can tell you that's my lucky living days. I really regret that it was a late decision to miss such wonderful, peaceful and safe country. Congrats Paul!! Take care.
One's experience of living in Croatia differs greatly depending on location. I moved to Zagreb two years ago and life has been extremely bittersweet. I spent 5 months in Dalmatia before living in Zagreb and to me, they're like two different countries. So region plays a huge part in how you might feel about Croatia as a foreigner.
Everyone's experience is different, and location is just one factor I think. I I have lived in Dalmatia, Varazdin, and Zagreb. They are all great in different ways, at least in my experience.
the great thing is you can hop to dalmatia over the summer with your car and experience it fully and at the same time live up north over the year... you dont have to get on planes overseas...just a few hours drive through amazing villages and small towns...its a great trip... everyone in croatia does it
@@PaulBradbury As a native Swede, I don't tend to sugarcoat things and similar to Croats, Swedish people are very direct and blunt and in my personal opinion, location has a huge impact rather than merely being a "factor". Even a native Croat would admit to that! ;)
@@e.b.4379 i hear you. But having had 3 very different Croatian experiences, and they were different - Hvar, Zagreb and Varazdin - they were all great and had their own 'factors'. Location was a factor but not a reason why Croatia was not great. All three were magical for diffent reasons
You need to see Istra because if you didn't been to Istra then you didn't see the greatest treasure this country haves. As soon you pass mountain Učka through tunnel and enter Istra, you will be stunned
My main problems here are the taxes and the bureaucracy. But I realised that there are so many good things in Croatia which I sometimes take for granted... You kind of made me feel glad I'm still here and didn't leave.
@@whatsupbudbud Because it’s not just wage taxes. VAT is 25% when you’e spending your pay; and then you have 4677 other tax-like fees and mandatory expenses depending on the area you live in. Zagreb has an additional 11% tax, etc.

Croatia is great place to live if you are at least middle class. If you are on median salary ( net 840E month), you are one bad day away from going into nasty debt. Also, there are not that many job opportunities outside major cities. Most good companies have their offices in Zagreb and even there, if you manage to get job in one of those, vertical mobility and chances for promotions are rare. Cohesive family structure is only thing that prevents many people from being completely broke.
The cohesive family structure is a huge safety net that does not exist elsewhere, for sure. @@PaulBradbury Remote work is possible for some people. Mainly design, IT, marketing, online sales, some counseling and similar jobs. But for wast majority of people, they rely on local economy and job markets. Croatia has very little industry. My background is in mechanical engineering, have lot of friends who are mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical and biochemical engineers and pool of good jobs and carrier opportunities is very slim, even in Zagreb. If you are in Lika or Slavonija, it's even worse. Also, everybody doesn't want or has capacity for being good or even decent entrepreneur. There is a good reason why lot's of young educated people left Croatia. Personally, left Zagreb for Munich and number of good jobs in industry is overwhelming here in Bavaria.
@@slaven18 how can you even compare Munich and Bavaria which is one of the richest and most developed region in the world with Croatia? Dubai, Swiss, London, Florida, Singapur and few other areas and that's all. Currently in the beginning phases of learning the language. I want to live in a rural area on about 10 acres. Land seems cheapest in slunj. Would you have anything to add? Is there a better area for cheap land or problems with living in slunj. Also, i say slavs not croats because many would have bwen from the former yugislavia region, it wasnt yugislavia when they lived there but thats where their villages were on the map
😀 welcome to the club! Few more things you could like are history of each area and towers..old cities..old original ships..Dubrovnik Republic laws..etc

That feeling of togetherness is so well put together through your words and sometimes even us, Croatian ppl, forget about how well close knit we are. We might have more expats living here, but a lot of local people are moving out of croatia. If you dont have a house or an apartment and you have to rent you can be in a bad situation. Also chances of buying a house or an apartment are really low for an average person. The minimum wage is really low compared to a cost of living, but i understand that if you have some savings and are working for a foreing company Croatia is great.
Born & raised in Australia, it's the same here. Cost of housing for last couple of decades has been over the top and getting a deposit together almost impossible for average income earners unless parents help out. I think it's the same everywhere, the lower the income, the lower the standard of living. Somehow all my maternal family in Croatia, in the 80s, all owned their own homes, never wanted for anything. Shortly after the war in the 90s there are friends and relatives there who managed to buy a house somewhere, maybe not in the city, but close enough. Something I've not been able to do here.
It turns out that Croatia and Romania have the highest percentage of real estate ownership in the EU, that is the only reason we are able to live well on such low salaries, with the realistic average being 800 euros a month.
In Canada if you want to get a passport you need a "witness" to "prove" that you "exist". It's cost of living and bureaucracy that is forcing us out. I love Croatia more than Canada, but simplicity of life and cost of living are the things that are still keeping me in Canada despite cold.
@@PaulBradbury Solution for Croatians living and working abroad is really simple, save bunch of money and come back. From my experience, living in Croatia can be super cheap. And there is so many opportunities where you can make it even more self-reliant when living here.
Listening from Germany all of those reasons I said yes x 8. Man said everything and it's all true. Problem lies when you are young and you have no money... Than Croatia can be hard place to start, or support your family. Young families can be tired from stretching their incomes from month to month barely covering basic needs. Here in Germany its easy to live. Its like you played game on computer on very hard level and than you switched playing same game but on a easy level.
Yes i agree it is hard. Perhaps the best compromise is to go to Germany and earn some money and get some experience when you are younger, then return, especially with the remote work revolution.
Question - my wife and I are considering relocating there in retirement. We are in our late 50's. My wife also has a medical condition where she has had spinal fusion. We are nervous about the stories we hear about the bureaucratic medical industry. Can you please tell us your perspective of how seniors are treated in the medical industry, and if you have to be placed on a waiting list for procedures to be done? Pros and cons? Thank you.
Its still a secret, about our most beautiful and most secure country and who we actually are,as a people... There's no comparison to this love people have for each other and for our country and make no mistake,we all know it very well... The proofs are in our recent history in the 90is and in our football achievements, that speak for them selves... Best, cleanest sea, best ,strongest people,nature,kindness,etc... You cant find anything like that anywhere else, its unique, but we payed the biggest price,to have all of that, with the blood of our finest... They knew they were not coming back, but did it anyway, for all of us here to enjoy Croatias beauty and safety, but never forgetting our past... Thank you for telling the truth, its a rare thing these days, so keep telling it... Greetings.
Sir, thank you very much. We all know that we have many problems in Croatia and we all need to earn all the benefits of living in Croatia. Nevertheless as you explained it is nice to live in Croatia and I am glad that ou are one of us....
Thanks for these informative and light-hearted videos, Paul. It's taken me hundreds of YT videos to get to the point where I can honestly say, I think I've found my place. Croatia is stunning and the coast in particular seems to combine all the charm of Italy, the Balearic Islands and Corfu but w/out the overcrowding (unless it's summer), the cost and the commercialism. Gotta go as I'm not binge-watching :)
Croatia really interests me as a place to come and live in but surely now as a Brit, Brexit has killed our ability to leave these shores for a country like Croatia. I would welcome your thoughts!
as a Croat from Istria, I lived in Spain, in Murcia, Cartagena and Oviedo for a year, I could also live there, unlike in Germany, where I currently work and live
Hi, I traveled to Croatia this summer and absolutely fell in love with it for all the reasons you mentioned. I am considering returning for a longer stay (I am a freelance worker). Are there any areas you would recommend for a single woman (mid 40s), some areas perhaps that are not too isolated and where there are « communities » of other foreigners and like-minded people to connect with since I’d be there alone? Don’t get me wrong, I want to fully immerse in the culture, but don’t want to be too isolated/alone. Open to any suggestions, thank you 😊
I would say pretty much anywhere is nice and welcoming. Bigger remote work communities at the moment seem to be Zagreb, Split, Zadar and Hvar, but there are many happy single women freelancers all over the country. It is a very safe country, and many single women comment on how relaxed and safe they feel here.
@Nino Pavkovic Thank you for the recommendation, I’ve heard positive things about Istria... I will definitely check it out next time I am in Croatia! 😊
@@evegelinas1813 Istria is next to Slovenia and Italy, 3 hours away from Venice, Austria & the Alps, everything is quite reachable. I’m from Zagreb, born here and lived here my entire life. Two years ago I’ve decided to move to Austria for work. The main reason was financial & the frustration with the never changing political climate in Croatia. It is sad to see what the politicians have done to Croatia. They’ve systematically robbed it for about 30 years ever since the war ended. They have amassed so much power & money that, basically, no election can remove them or change anything - seeing all that makes an ordinary person very frustrated, with a desire to leave… Now, don’t get me wrong, there is no place like home. I love my country and its people & will come back one day. BUT, it needs to be said & pointed out what the HDZ/SDP have done…

@@PaulBradbury . I know Croatia (ex Yugoslavia) more than 40 years and spend a lot of time every year especially in the area of 1200 islands.. A lot has changed. For me, the Croatian coast is the most beautiful in Europe! (an Australian guest once meant even the world...)
Over 35 years ago, my parents moved back to Croatia. They built a house. Getting builders to work took effort. They came in their own time, expected a cooked morning breakfast and lunch, with coffee during coffee breaks. My Mum was putting in a few hours a day just serving them! Then there was the 'under the table' approvals and deals needed, you had to grease a few hands to get anything done, especially if you had to get medical care. Might be different now, but when I visited a few years ago, I found the same tone going on. Mind you, same stuff goes on in the West. In Australia, you don't have to pay 'under the table', the theft and corruption is out in the open with the number of taxes, hidden taxes, fees, licences etc to every Tom, Dick & Harry. But, I was happiest in Croatia. People can still get together and chat. Community life has died down a bit, but that's what too much tech & internet does to society.
I think Croatia is one of those places where people have very individual experiences - some good and some bad. Mine have been exceptional, and I consider myself fortunate. But I think overall things are improving.

We own a delightful, tiny little house in Paradise and spend as much time as we can there. Croatia we love you!! Peter Holloway
Haha quality. I could write a book about spontaneous house purchases on Hvar after my time as a real estate agent there. 2004 was incredible in that regard. And a place in Vrboska is idyllic indeed. Lovely spot, and the walk to and from Jelsa along the coast is one of the finest pleasures in life.
No one mentioned the fact that "As many as 91% of Croatians live in their own property, which is 21% above the European average, according to a survey by the EU's statistical office Eurostat". That is why so many Croatians are able to live on a measly salary of 750 euros per month. In countries like Switzerland, most people rent most of their lives, you have to be a millionaire there to buy a house. It is easier to buy a home in Germany but even there most people rent. If Croats had to live like the Germans and rent most of their lives, life would be much harder there. That's probably the main reason Croatia hasn't seen a large population exodus. Why else would so many Croatians stay in Croatia and complain that they can't buy much or save on a 750 euro salary. It is because most own their own homes.
Agree with you that the home ownership is not often factored in, but even with it factored in, it is hard here - just look at the recent euro to euro comparisons with Slovenia on prices and wages. I assume home ownership rates in Slovenia are similar (but don't know).
@@PaulBradbury Money unfortunately, I’m in the process of getting a career, once that’s sorted and I have some money behind me I will. I am learning to work in woodlands so that would be amazing to do that in Croatia.

The lifestyle you are talkin about, is what I live, but in a country that does not accept it.
Electricians are quite hard to find in Croatia, as many have gone to Germany for higher wages. I think you could set yourself up with quite a nice electrician business on the coast.
you can find job as electrician literally anywhere. or even open your own business as Paul recommends and extort people out of their money during summer season when someones AC unit brokes down and their tourists are freaking out. and you are only dude in the area that would come to fix it. because electricans in croatia rarely take small jobs like that. they always want to do whole electric installations on some new buildings. and not come to fix AC units and stuff like that.

Your content is excellent. Your delivery is excellent. And your production quality is excellent. Why do you only have 16.3k subscribers?!
In Canada if you want to get a passport you need a "witness" to "prove" that you "exist".
It's cost of living and bureaucracy that is forcing us out. I love Croatia more than Canada, but simplicity of life and cost of living are the things that are still keeping me in Canada despite cold.
They are challenges for sure, but there are more positives to living here in my opinion
Love you, dude!

They have amassed so much power & money that, basically, no election can remove them or change anything - seeing all that makes an ordinary person very frustrated, with a desire to leave…
Now, don’t get me wrong, there is no place like home. I love my country and its people & will come back one day. BUT, it needs to be said & pointed out what the HDZ/SDP have done…

Infrastructure is like in Afghanistan, no jobs, criminal politicians, corrupt police and if you are NOT one of them, you are ONE BIG ZERO................
@@Bounty-Hunter69 check out the other videos and you will find your answers especially about slavonia. Vids called Vukovar Card and Eastern Croatia Quiz
@@PaulBradbury Both you and me as croatian knows that what are you saying here is NOT TRUE. Croatia is deeply corrupt country with many criminals in the politics. Both you and me knows that many people searching for food in trashcans, familys who must move from their homes and in the end since year 2000 croatia went from 4.6million people to 3.5million. There you have "the best place to live in EU" Sorry sir but in this video you talking a lot of shit...
We visited friends in Vrbanj 6 years ago. I was sent to buy croissants in Vrboska. ‘’You were gone a while’’ ??
‘’Sorry, here’s the croissants, I think I’ve just bought a house as well’’
And that is the truth.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Pozdrav iz Osijeka !
Love Osijek
I went on holiday to Croatia in June and I love it, I really want to move there one day!
What are you waiting for?
@@PaulBradbury Money unfortunately, I’m in the process of getting a career, once that’s sorted and I have some money behind me I will. I am learning to work in woodlands so that would be amazing to do that in Croatia.
Croatia is closest to paradise in general.
There should be no discussion about it
Haha very true
Only by the coast. But central Croatia?
Tell me honestly where do I have the best chance to have a job as an electrician or as a simple forklift driver, of course somewhere on the coastline, maybe Zadar? I am really planning to move in there next year. I have croatian blood in my veins and every time I see a video about Croatia, I feel like I should be there. The lifestyle you are talkin about, is what I live, but in a country that does not accept it.
Electricians are quite hard to find in Croatia, as many have gone to Germany for higher wages. I think you could set yourself up with quite a nice electrician business on the coast.
@@PaulBradbury Thank you for your fast response Mr Bradbury, I am really grateful for that. Great videos.
you can find job as electrician literally anywhere. or even open your own business as Paul recommends
and extort people out of their money during summer season when someones AC unit brokes down and their tourists are freaking out. and you are only dude in the area that would come to fix it.
because electricans in croatia rarely take small jobs like that.
they always want to do whole electric installations on some new buildings.
and not come to fix AC units and stuff like that.
Please, no more advertising Croatia. That's like an open invitation for criminals to move in. We want to things stay like they are, safe and absurd. 😅
haha
A lot of people from Nepal, Philippines etc. come here and they're very kind people and even try to assimilate
@@richard_from_england333 Yes there is a big influx - we will have a video on that in the New Year
@@richard_from_england333 I agree. I'm seeing more and more of them and never had any problems. They are always smiling, which means that not everything is bad here like some people imply.
"safe and absurd" - you guys rock!
Best places to live in words are countryes in central/east europe with smaller population between 2-10 milion. In general everythink is less robotic less capitalistic more local and sentimental.People are in general less spoiled , more accommodating and helping.Countryes like romania bulgaria albania... are not what i meant because they are to much messy and full of crime even for small population. But countryes like croatia, slovenia, slovakia, czech republic, latvia and litva are best for living.Croatia is best in my opinion because of people, culture and landscape diversity, sea islands climate...
Everyone is different, but I find this part of Europe to be ideal
@@PaulBradbury "this part of europe" is irrelevant. This filling of acceptance, culture, cindnes under this misleading irelevant term "balkans" you can only feel in croatia slovenia and north serbia while other places in so called balkans are difftent story.Only time i saw romanian,bulgarian,albanian.. registrations are on vans(ask yourself why) and in middle of forest in national park next to slovenian border.
I know you made the right choice. That's coming from a American thats been to over thirty countries, lived jn six, now living permanently in Montenegro.
Sounds like you made a similar good choice
I have lived permanently in Croatia for nearly seven years and in the prior fifteen years lived here for extended periods. I was taught that if you cannot say anything nice, say nothing. I'm saying nothing other than that I follow the Scottish dictum of "Trust everyone - but cut the cards".
I've lived in Croatia for 18 years & it's nice to hear part of the truth, though their is more then 10 parts to learn about Croatia & Croatians, 90% are very lovely people, though don't meet the other 10% don't do business until you know every part & I mean every part, don't even think about doing a sick sale or more paperwork to get something done, Wow I could go on & on & on, though, if you go slowly in all business deals, you will not get burnt, nether put any money down until you know all & best if you can is to do key-in-hand that way their will be no hidden costs coming your way, apart from that Opatija & Istria is probably the best place to live, if you have the money too!!!!
I am Croatian living in Ireland.
Life quality is much much better in Ireland.
Enough said and well said :) if only the monthly salary was one of the resons as well :P greetings from Rijeka :)
Haha, I hear you.
