      Yes I’m glad they’re finally here. So far my luck has been good but as you know that can change fast. Trust me I’ve lost way more twins (one or both) over the years than I’ve had survive. If Mom can get them out ok they usually make it. So knock on wood!! We’ll see what happens! Thanks Jesse

    • @farmertylerranch4399
      @farmertylerranch4399  5 лет назад

      Yes I imagine it is! You know I’d never even heard of a “calf warmer” until I started watching RUclips! So what’s your protocol for twins? Let the cow raise both? Bottle feed one? Give one away? Depends on the situation? I’m interested in what others do. Thanks Kmsfarms!

    • @kmsfarms9011
      @kmsfarms9011 5 лет назад

      I really base my decision on the cow. If it’s a cow who has a lot of milk, and loves both calves, I’ll let her raise both. If I have another cow lose a calf, I will graft one of the twins. That way I have a cow with a job and end up with 2 bigger calves to sell rather than a set of twins that didn’t get enough milk. Hope that makes sense.

    • @farmertylerranch4399
      @farmertylerranch4399  5 лет назад

    • @farmertylerranch4399
      @farmertylerranch4399  5 лет назад +1

      To tell you the truth I have no idea what bottle calves go for around here. I’ve never bought one and I’ve never sold one! I’d imagine pairs would bring a premium now because the grass is waking up, that’s usually how it goes. Sounds like the perfect time to expand BTO! If you can get pairs for around $1000 the calf almost pays for both of them at the first sale. Thanks for watching BTO!

    • @farmertylerranch4399
      @farmertylerranch4399  5 лет назад +2

      Yes the phenomenon is known as “Freemartin Twins”. Most common in cattle, when the twins are mixed sex (one male and one female) the female has a 90% chance of being sterile. Has to do with sharing blood supply between both twins and the hormones from the male twin messing up the females reproductive development. It can happen in sheep, but very rare! Thanks Greg

      We checked that heifer anyways, on the infinitesimal chance she'd implemanted *just* long enough before her brother that there'd been no hormonal exchange, but it was in vain. She *was* altered. Crying shame. Her dam was a helluva cow! If she wasn't so old, we might've tried for another year, knowing(now) why the last year had pulled her down so badly, with ai and sexed semen, but she WAS old, her front teeth were worn to beneath her gumline, so it wasn't fair to her to ask her to exist on pasture and handfeeding alfalfa cubes, and BOSS.(which is what she'd done the previous year, as *my* baby)

      I love watching your videos. I love animals. When I was first married my x-husband worked on a dairy farm. I use to help milk on weekends. I've been there when they had to pull calves, bottle fed calves and drove the tractor to the field to bring the cow and her calf to the barn. Sorry I'm rambling. I love the videos, I think I've missed some, but will try to keep up now. Thanks for your time, Cecile from Hanover County VA.

    Off subject but I’m curious as to why you feed square bales vs. rounds bales. Around here square bales are almost non existent no matter how big or how small the farms are.

      That’s funny it’s the exact opposite here. I think the reason is that there is a big market for small squares for horse owners. Most of them don’t have a tractor or any way to move rounds so they all want small squares. I sell about half my hay crop to horse owners so I have to do small squares. The other big market here is dairies. They want large squares or small squares depending on the size of the dairy.

      Farmer Tyler Ranch understand that completely crazy how much different things are throughout the country. Not gonna lie after watching you feed squares makes me appreciate my round rolls lol. Great looking cattle and beautiful place. I really like your rented property. Enjoy the videos and keep them coming. So far I have came across you and Our Wyoming Life and really enjoyed both and have learned a few things as well.

      Thank you Ryan. Yeah I’m wanting a round baler more all the time. They are just unicorns around here. The closest one I could find was like 700 miles away! The rented property is really a beautiful piece of land, I don’t think I’ve even really showed the wooded area much. I watch OWL too! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos I hope you stick around!

    Hey man, so i was wondering, how can you know when a cow is going to be a good mom? What do you check in their body when she is young?

    • @farmertylerranch4399
      @farmertylerranch4399  5 лет назад

      Well if we’re talking about maternal instincts there is really no way to tell until they actually have a calf. Same with milk production and even then you really won’t see her true potential until about the third calf I’d say. As far as choosing replacement heifers, I look for wide framed balanced heifers. It’s easier when you have a group to compare. Pick the ones with wide hips that came out of good moms. Also it helps if you know their age, you’ll want to breed them at 14 months old, no sooner. Other than that, look at their disposition. You don’t want crazy cows! It’s hard to tell you everything in a paragraph but that should give you a good start. Hope that helps!

      @@farmertylerranch4399 Thanks, yes it does!, im trying to improve my genetics at the ranch, im putting brahman so i can improve the rusticity and planning to keep the bull for 3 years, then change to a more european, like beefmaster, so that´s why i wanted to know with my new calf too choose the right ones

      I think a Brahman cross would be a great choice assuming you’re in a hotter part of Mexico (frequently seeing 100*F and higher). Sounds like you’re on the right path!

      Yeah cows really aren’t supposed to have twins. And thinking back, we never got them until maybe 10-15 years ago and even then it was rare. Must have got a bull that had that gene or something! Thanks Blake
