- An experiment with an 8 string tenor ukulele, using 4 octave pairs - with pairs of:
High and low G
High and low C
High and low E
High and low A
(With a normal tenor 8-string, the E's and A's would be unison tuning, two of exactly the same string).
The uke in the video is the Kala KA-SCAC-T8, available from World of Ukes: worldofukes.co...
You can always contact me for any customisations or different string combinations.
Hi Matt thanks for taking the extra time to do this customisation and set up for me. Can't wait to get my hands on it, it sounds full and deep which is what I was hoping for. Also the Derek tuning (formerly known as the Dennis tuning gave me a chuckle 😂).
Cheers Derek.
No problem Dennis! :)
Beautiful! Rich.
I really, really, really like that sound! First time hearing this combo and I'm blown away!
Quick update, Uke arrived very quickly and very well set up (thanks Matt great service). Strings are settling in nicely, sounds great, deep almost guitar like tone, very different than my 4 stringer tenor or baritone even. Finger picks quite nicely and strums really lovely. I've had to back off a little on how hard I normally strum otherwise that low E can grumble a little. But that's my fault as I got into the habit of strumming a bit harder than I should due to trying to emulate formby thrash style, so no bad thing to have to ease up a little. Over all I'm delighted with it. Thanks again Matt.
Delighted to hear that, great news 😊😊
You lucky man, that set up sounds amazing, you may well start a trend.
Doing the octave separation with all of the strings definitely gives it a much more robust sound! Kind of like a mini twelve string guitar!!
Real nice sound, Derek is clearly on to something with his Dennis tuning 😉.
Wow….I really love the sound of this string combination! It makes my Kala (normal) 8-string tenor sound positively boring! Really interesting demo Matt…thanks! 😁🎶
Sounds sweet Matt my 8 string needs new strings so you have given me ideas, I was going to sell it but it might have won a last minute reprieve 🤙🎵🎶👍
Might be worth a quick tinker, yes!
Beautiful "Haunting" sound! I like it!
Ooh, that sounds nice! I have a neglected 8 string tenor in the cupboard (my 8 string baritone gets more love...) and I think I might have to try Derek Tuning on it now.
Or Dennis tuning, both work well.
Consider using Perry Strings (GCEA 8vb) on your baritone. Then put regular gcea Strings for baritone. You'll get the same rich sound and tuning 😄
Nice sound …beautiful noise…
Fabulous
I really liked the sound of that. ❤
But you had me worried first time you plucked the individual strings, coz the C's both sounded the same.
Ah yes, clumsy thumbs!
That's rather a lovely sound. Something about it puts me in mind of the opening theme from Bagpuss.
I know what you mean!
Hi Matt! I've seen lots of people online complaining that over time their 8-string ukes have bridges or wooden bodies that give from too much tension for so many strings such a small wooden instrument. Have you experienced this with 8-string tenors? Do you think adding the low E and A strings might increase the likelihood of damage to the instrument over time from excessive tension? Do you think if so, the solution to all this might be the KLOS carbon fiber 8-string tenor, or is it not worth the investment?
I have seen it a couple of times over the years with 8 strings, but never the same model twice. I've seen it with 4 strings too. I've sent a lot of 8 strings out during this time so I don't think it's a major issue.
interesting tuning and … a really cool thumbnail, Matt 😊
The background is one of my photos, and the foreground is me... but I didn't take them both at the same place and time!

@@MariUSukulele Yes, hard to cut your hair out on Photoshop when you haven't got much to begin with...
I want to try low E and low A on my KA-8E. Can you tell me the string diameter for each. You mentioned baritone string for low A. How do I get low E? Sounds great. Can't wait to try it.
I don't know the gauges but I used a Fremont Low G as the A and a D'Addario J2704 classical guitar, normal tension string for the E. (So, a guitar D string).
What brand of low A string have you used. Thank you
Absolute madman! Don't you know what happens when you try to play ukulele god?!
😂
Hi, I love the sound of the 4 octave pairs. Can you tell me what I should be looking or buying for when ordering the necessary strings. Am I looking for an 8 string pkg or do I order the strings individually? How do I pick and choose? Thank you so much
You'd start with an 8 string pack. Then instead of one of the A's, use any single low G for a tenor uke, tuned up to A. For the E, use a guitar string, i used a D'addario classic nylon D string, tuned up to E.
Thank you so kindly. Just received my 8 string Uke today. Can’t wait to experiment with the strings. All the best.@@WorldofUkes
Ps, normal tension D string for the D’addario classic? @@WorldofUkes
I like it. I'm interested. Can you simply which strings require a guitar string? I'm a beginner but I have a 8 string
Two strings have been changed. One to a classical guitar D string, which I have tuned to E (so that's the low E). And I've taken off one of the A strings and replaced it with a ukulele low G string, tuned up one tone to A.
Great idea. I'll be trying that soon.😊
Me likey!!!
sounds louder and stronger like a keyboard
