I have been listening to your channel to educate myself about ukulele while driving. I know you kept saying you were not a teacher, but we are certainly benefiting from your knowledge.
Hello Baz, years ago I gave my wife a Kamaka 8 string tenor ukulele. She plays it with a pick, like a mandolin. This looks prettier than hers. A set of Worth Clears really make it sing! You’re right about nylon strings, I hates em too, Around here, more and more people are trying out the 8 string phenomenon. The sound grows on one. It works well for Irish folk music too! (It could have been built in a shed by a woman, also) Thanks for the review, be safe!
@@GotAUkulele Flurocarbon is Similar to Nylon but sounds different. However Nyltech (basically D'addario Nylgut copy) is soft too. Nylon is easier for the fretting hand than Steel so no issues with that.
I love the looks of this one. Even the open head works on this one. The price is good for the build. I am a Soprano and concert size player but this sounds peppy and has the jingle of a concert. Not bad. I like it picked the best. This was a real nice one.. thanks for the review my friend, enjoyable and informative as always… DOC. …hope your daughter feels better my prayers for her… God bless
What an absolutely divine instrument - Thanks for the review (now to persuade my better half that I absolutely MUST have this instrument lol). Have a Great week and Stay safe:)
Great review as always, I agree that it looks too big at the headstock. I play a Luna High Tide 8 string tenor and it's only 37mm at the nut. Overall it looks a lovely little uke. One of my band members has a Noah concert and he's really pleased with it. Noah are very local to me as I live in Worthing! Stay safe Baz, keep on with the great reviews!
Ahhhh, very nice sound! It made me think of a Charango, the south american cousin of the uke. Dispite its difficulty, it really shines fingerpicking. Have a good sunday man, cheers!
I'm definitely a fan of Noah - if there was such a thing as a "factory" perfect Noah would more than stand its own against anything in the sub £500 class. My 2020 style spruce concert has a variation in the staining on the back of the neck (I think I noticed similar on your 8 string review model- so maybe it's a fashion statement :-) ); one of the spindles for the tuners is about 2mm out of alignment and the top joint is slightly more obvious than on some other examples (but I've seen "worse" in hand made ukes costing more than £1000 ). The thing is, if this was being sold as a factory produced uke for £500, the cosmetic issues might lead to it being discounted by about £50 but Matt is selling them for around half that price! Although there are plenty of all solid ukes at the sub £300 level, even the equivalent models from the better regarded mass produced brands are beginning to drift north of the £300 mark. So, you could get a good uke for under £300 but, what you get with Noah that stands out, particularly at this price point, is the feeling that it has been put together with a sense of purpose by someone who really knows what they are up to.
I really like that and I think it's a fair price. Funnily enough before you said "Mandolin type sound!" I thought the same. Despite it's oddities with the different colour tuners and the screw missing, I really like it. I actually preferred it fingerpicked. You did that very well! Thanks for the review Baz. That was fun to watch. Cheers!
I like it and think that it’s a fair price. The odd ding doesn’t worry me, it makes it personal and as I’ve said before, if you look closely at Willie Nelson’s guitar you might notice a a few dings. 🤣
There is some very interesting history around 8 string concerts. Martin developed "or copied what was being made in Hawai'i" what is historically called a taropatch ukulele. It is rumored that this is the basis of the concert size body as it was larger than the most common size of it's day and age that being the soprano or standard in Kamaka sizes. Traditionally tuned in unison for all pairs. Now days Ohana, and occasionally Pono make their own examples (I have a Pono example, Pono ACT). What I do is use the worth BM strings and it is an incredible and historical sound that just works for some songs. If you want a very trippy Ukulele take a look at the Ohana Tiple.
Nice uke Good review I got a Tangle Wood 8 string Ten-nor that absolutely love 1 think this sounds like a better sound and look than mine. Thanks, as always
When you started, I was thinking "8-string concert? won't work." But maybe it does. I have various sizes; mainly a soprano man myself, but was given (YES!) an 8 string tenor a short while back (the Baton Rouge Tenor you reviewed well, as it happens). So I have ventured into 8-string land. Yes, there are some songs that it suits, and some it definitely doesn't. Wouldn't recommend it as an only uke, but for someone who already knows how to play a four-string moderately-well, it adds another dimension and opens up other possibilities. I usually chord-melody-fingerpick my 8 string, and I haven't found it that difficult, but other people's mileage will vary.
Yep - all about that extra dimension. That's exactly it. As for scale - I seem to recall Phil Doleman has a taropatch made for him by Rob Collins that is concert scale.
Great info. You mentioned that I can change tuning on my 8 string ukulele. I want a low E and low A instead of in unison. Do I need to use 2 baritone strings?
It’s not quite so cut and dried. Yes you will need a bigger gauge if you don’t go wound strings, but as to which - very subjective depending on feel you want. There isn’t just one right or wrong here
It’s actually very easy to play 8 stings . Treat as though it were 4 and you will be fine . I have a 8 string Tangle wood Ten-nor that I absolutely love
It would probably be unfair to compare them. Very different scales so feel different to play and smaller body here. Also this is all solid with spruce whilst the BR is all mahogany laminate.
At the end of the day its about its sound,as in all instruments,I dont care about its price,my dear this is very expensive, dont care, prefer the cheaper one cause its a darling sound, and this was very lovely sound, thankyou Sir
Does it come with a hard case? Otherwise, it might be an odyssey trying to find one that fits. A friend of mine has a beautiful glass-topped credenza with ukulele hangers mounted under it. But when we tried to hand a 5-string slothead under it, it wouldn’t fit; the head was too large. That would certainly be the case with this one! I like the sound of this instrument. I don’t think I would get much use out of it, though. As it is, my 5-string rarely comes out out its case.
Saying all that - it arrived in the standard Noah box and standard Noah padded bag - so maybe it's regular sized. Dunno - don't have a concert hard case here to test it in.
I'm such a sucker for abalone, it's a gorgeous instrument! Great review Baz. I do agree on the standard being of better value. I like the jangle of 8 strings. It would work well as rhythm in a band.
@@GotAUkulele Absolutely, I think growing up in the south of the US and listening and watching gaudy old country stars with their beautiful guitars and flashy suits have ruined my sense of taste forever 😂. I totally get why people don't like it though.
Very pretty and nice sounding for sure ! The price is reasonable also! I would just be concerned about a missing screw. That should never get past inspection like that! But, it is a good value!
I have to say, I don't like nylon strings especially black nylons, but they sounded good over your mic. That uke might be transcendent with fluorocarbon strings.
The wound G-string on this one, is a bit dominating. Not a fan of that. But as you (and everyone else) say: It's really great looking and sounding instrument at a great price! I got a Noah Baritone in the summer of 2020. Made in feb. 2019. It has a few ekstra flaws. And it makes sense, that quality has improved since. Butt Matt was great, all the way through, and the uke sounds GREAT. Not overly boomy (Spruce top, Monkey Pod back and sides), but warm and punchy at the same time. A guitarist friend of mine tried it the other day. He could'nt believe that you could get an instrument like that at that price.
@@GotAUkulele Easily, yes. Time consuming.. also yes :p I hope that Matt does'nt read ALL of the nice things being said and written. It might end up pushing up the prices :p
Seems like a nice uke. I think you're being overly generous on the mismatched tuners, and especially the missing screw. Sure they can send you new screw, (and a set of tuners to make them match, I suppose), but at that price point, and a maker of that reputation, the combination of these two mistakes is unacceptable. It indicates a lack of attention to detail. Maybe I'm just too picky.
I don't know if the screw worked loose in transit to me rather than leaving the workshop like that. (Things happen - I once had a new Pono arrive with me that cost more than three times this price and one of the tuner button screws had come out and was rolling around in the case. Who is at fault there? So I I use my judgment on knowing the sales service of the brand from speaking to many other buyers. This would not result in a dispute with Noah - it would just get sorted. No biggie. Had this been an Amazon 'direct from factory' or a high street store with a difficult reputation, that would be a different story - because the after sales would be a royal hassle. Big difference. As for the mismatch colour - that IS an odd one - they are virtually un-noticeable and obviously make zero effect on how it works / plays though. In fact, I only spotted it making the video in close up.
At that price, there should not be tuner mismatch and missing screw. I would have dinged this for poor quality control. I bought an Aklot 8-string which came with Aquila strings (wound low G) for US$78 including shipping in USA. Sure, it is mahogany laminate, but it plays well and the tuners are matched and smooth-working. That's a big difference in price.
It was a QC mistake, no question.. however - anyone who has dealt with Matt at Noah will know - he's one of the most helpful sellers I've come across - if one arrived like this - he'd sort it out in a flash with no fuss. That's a big bonus when buying. Aklot would involve waiting for another from China. In fact they'd probably just send you another free instrument as they do that a lot to people in return for positive reviews... ever wonder why there is no Aklot review on Got A Ukulele?
I see the Got A Ukulele downvoters are back. They have been quiet lately but seem to be on a roll. First two came in on this video in less time than it takes to watch..
