Since it is the first video this year, I have thought of something special for you and packed the restoration in a fairy tale. I also did my interpretation of the japanese Kintsugi Technique. This time I have restored a padlock. A diver has found the padlock in the german bodensee. So it is a real underwater treasure. The antique lock is about 150 years old and may have been at the bottom of the lake for a long time before the lake treasure was found.
The lock is very rusty and can no longer be unlocked although a key is included. This is also rusted. The lock is so heavily calcified that it almost looks like a stone.
I start with electrolysis to loosen the rust. Then I can finally disassemble the historic piece completely.
I find a lot of rust and sand inside, which seems to have protected the mechanics. All the internal components are only slightly rusted.
However, I have to remake the outer ring of the lock after it has been eaten away by rust to paper thickness.
The finished part is not painted but finished by the japanning technique. For this I bake on 3 layers of tar, linseed oil and turpentine mixture.
I then weld a fracture on the shutter and hot-blue all the mechanical parts.
I weld the latch bolt because it has deep rust pitting. I then grind everything clean to 800 grit and nickel plate the latch.
All rivets I turn from a steel bar new with my lathe and nickel plate and polish them as well.
The look of the front and back of the lock I want to preserve to keep the history of the time at the bottom of a lake alive.
I solder the backs with body tin to strengthen the discs and nickel plate and polish them as well.
In the style of the japanese kintsugi technique, where porcelain vases and bowls are glued with gold to accentuate the story rather than cover it up, I am gilding the deep rust inclusions with gold leaf. This gilding will wear off over time in the raised areas, allowing the polished nickel to show through.
Now I can finally restore the key. Here, too, it is important for me to preserve the patina of the key. To intensify the effect, I hot-blue the key at the end.
For the beer test, I try a “Tucher Rotbier” from nuremberg this time.
After this reward, I go to the assembly.
I hope you like the video.
I wish you all a good start to the new year 2022
I am looking forward to you.

Hello everyone, for all of you who might be worried, I just want to say: I WILL NOT USE THIS FONT AGAIN :D. I chose it to emphasize the fairy tale theme. you also don't need to be worried that I will continue to expand my "poetry" on the channel in the future. I just wanted to do something fun & special for you for the start of the year. 👍

Nothing wrong with the poetry, the different style or the font. He who doesn't appreciate the artistic originality of this particular video needs a restoration of his own, which you may not be able to provide though.

Hey Paul, When I edited the video I also thought to myself "The cover looked really good when it was just nickel plated". But it was done already and like I said: My hope is, that the gold rubs off on the higher parts of the pitting and reveals a lot of the nickel plating finish. See you on the next one ?!

Okay, the Amazing Dr. Beer is at it again! Firstly, your videos are absolutely mesmerizing. The editing and attention to detail is a work in itself. Love the added twists, like the treasure chest which makes it fun. So creative. The restoration challenges are varied but you always have a solution. The plastic mold in another video for the coffee grinder was on a new level. Who thought you could bring this lock would come back to life? Bravo Dr. Beer. I am hooked. I will have to buy you a beer 🍺

Very nice work! I would not have thought it possible to restore that lock. I was impressed with the poetry! I lived in Germany for many years when I was young and learned German well; and it gave me an appreciation for how difficult English is by comparison. To write poetry in English is impressive! Also, that beer... we had Tucher in the Hunsrück too. But I preferred the Pilsner. Most often we had Königsbacher locally. Very good though. Thank you for your videos. Always a pleasure to watch.

Wonderful restoration as usual. I loved that you kept the patina wherever you could. It adds so much character to the lock. Hoist a beer for me!!

I was ready to burst when you about to fill the rust again lol. I wonder how long it must've been in the water to be in that condition. Really great work once again! Happy new year dr beer. Wishing you all the the great things this year. Have a good one!

Loved seeing the lock brought back to life.
I have a question about the beer reviews. In the US most beers are served cold, and I understand that in Europe most are served room temperature. My question is do you ever drink certain beers chilled, and does it affect the flavor much?

    • @NTRprojects
      @NTRprojects  2 года назад +3

Hey I also drink it chilled, but around seven degrees Celsius, so not as cold as in the US. I think a beer shouldn't be served at room temperature
