Another absolutely first rate video. Crammed full of practical advice, I'll have to watch this several times I suspect. Thanks for providing such excellent tuition. Really appreciated.
Again, thanks for your videos. Though I've been using Cubase for years, I've barely noodled with any synths. Your straightforward and accessible instructions have inspired me to take the plunge.
Hey, Thanks a lot for all this stuff. You're basically taking each plugin, instrument or feature in cubase, and making a video about it. How awesome is that ?! Soon, each feature of the official pdf manual will have its own link to one of your videos :) Pro..beginners..no matter who we are, with the literally thousands of features and functions in cubase, it is impossible to know everything. Your videos are fantastic. If I could make a request, you know what I would want? I would like to watch 2 or 3 lonnnng videos, with tons of new ideas to do plenty of cool, complex things with the logic and project editor. There are dozens of thousands of cubase videos, but there only exists a few simple videos, where the guys goes like "ok, you press +, you add a line, you press -, you remove a line, you do this, this and this, and now you can move a note by 1 octave...", etc etc... or the guy will just use 2 or 3 presets... Maybe 1 user out of 100 knows these editors exist... maybe 1 out of 1000 use it... and they don't even use 0.001% of its power. So sad 😞 Thanks, MAN
Thanks, glad you're enjoying the videos. When I get a chance, i will be doing some longer videos, but each 20 minute video takes around a day in total to complete, so I'll get onto some other topics in the new year - with maybe a few 'curve balls' thrown in, possibly in a more 'streamed' way, so they can be made without hours of editing afterwards (but be a little rougher round the edges).
Thank you for the detailed explanation .. It seems the sounds here are pretty basic and we could rather save the space to load better sounding free VSTs for the purpose .. 😊
So I just spent about 4 hours trying to figure out why Halion Sonic SE wasn't recording anything on my instrument tracks. Cubase does not give you the Halion as an midi input choice in the left zone inspector. Turns out that although you can hear the sounds when you play them directly on the Halion window, they won't record to the instrument track. I should state that I do not have a midi keyboard which I believe DOES record straight to the instrument track when you hit record. I finally figured out that you have to create a zone on the instrument track then double click to bring the track into the editor, then play the notes on the piano roll on the left side of the editor window. It will record the midi info to the track in real time. I watched yours and about 7 other videos and you all must have midi keyboards because nobody mentioned it lol. I was seriously at a loss. Just thought that you may want to mention this quirk in your future vids about Halion Sonic. Weird thing is that Groove Agent DOES show up as an option for your midi input on an instrument track so I've just been tapping on the Groove agent pads while it's open and recording lots of drums. Halion just won't do that even though you hear it generating sound. Anyways, cheers and thanks for the other stuff I learned from you. Great vid!
Hi Steve. Yes, HSSE is "downstream" of the MIDI part of the instrument track, hence it not being able to record the MIDI on the keyboard on HSSE - I don't think that's a quirk of HSSE as such, it's something that's the case on all VSTi with keyboards on that I've seen. You may want to take a look at the on-screen keyboard - ruclips.net/video/wGDcQGffYHs/видео.html - as this will help you out if you want to play in a slightly more accessible way than playing on the screen with a mouse?
Thx for this video! In my installation of HS SE 3.5 I can see SE Artist, but no instrument is accessible. Only the instruments from SE Basis. Trip is visible but nothing accessible. And Flux is not visible. Is that an installation error? Or is it because of the version 3.5 that has less content?
I'd say that's an installation error. You should have all the SE content, and Flux as well. Have a look here - ruclips.net/video/LX5FmnSPv9M/видео.html - and see if that helps out.
@@musictechtuition Watched the video but it did not help. So I try a complete un-install and re-install of my Cubase now... Where can I see what I own and what is combined with it?
Absolutely - you can record-enable as many tracks as you want (up to a limit, depending on the Cubase version you're running) and record MIDI and Audio at the same time.
@@musictechtuition Could you make a short tutorial on recording (eg violin) from halion se3 into cubase please. I searched in youtube and google and did not find any useful guidance. When I try to record it will not create any audio or midi on the track. I have Cubase AI 12. Thanks for all your help.
@@amirfardin13 Hi. I'm not actually sure what you mean? If you have an instrument track with Halion Sonic in it, and you can play it and hear sound, then recording while playing it should give you MIDI on the track (and audio from the output). You may not have the track record enabled (red button on the track itself)?
@@musictechtuition Yes, I add into the instrument track Halion Sonic SE 3, when I play on Halion Sonic keyboard I hear the sound, for recording the track record is enabled I also click the transport record, in the track an empty box appears with no midi and as soon as I click the stop on transport, the empty box disappears. I cannot find any video showing how to record in cubase from playing Halion Sonic keyboard.
@@amirfardin13 Ah, got you. If you're playing the Halion Sonic keyboard at the bottom of the synth on screen, that won't work. It doesn't generate MIDI, it plays the synth directly. You either need to use the on-screen keyboard (ALT + K to summon this - ruclips.net/video/wGDcQGffYHs/видео.html ) or use an external MIDI keyboard to play it.
Did the free version of Halio Sonic SE3 you are demonstrating come bundled with cubase as I don't have that many libraries with my version that I downloaded directly from the Steinberg website?
Hi. Yes it does - you can download it regardless of whether you have Cubase or not - it's totally free. You probably don't have as many libraries as I do on screen as I have the full version of Halion Sonic installed, and HSSE will show those libraries as well (because it's on my system). This always ends up being a bit of an issue as often people have fewer libraries, and combined with the somewhat unreliable management system Steinberg have (where often people don't have all the libraries they are entitled to installed) it leads to all numbers of different sounds available.
@@musictechtuition Ok Thanks. Yes their licensing system is terrible. The worst for any software I have experienced period and I have downloaded an awful lot over the years.I've heard similar comments elsewhere.
Trip isn't listed separately in Download Assistant - I think it gets installed with the Halion Sonic Content. Have a look in the Steinberg LIbrary manager, you should see it listed separately in there. The way Steinberg does content is pretty confusing.
Yes, you need to record using the Cubase Virtual Keyboard - the Halion one generates its midi 'downstream' of the instrument track, so it won't be recorded by Cubase.
What I don't get in Halion Sonic: In the "Octave - Coarse-Fine"-screen the 'Fine' knob allows you to pitch your (percussion) sounds from -100 to + 100 cents, but if you want to pitch it up more than a semitone and were hoping to use the 'Coarse' knob, it doesn't work! What it does instead is shifting the sample zones on the keyboard. Or am I missing something here? I'm talking Cubase 11.01 Pro.... Anybody?
@@musictechtuition It's one of the latin percussion patches, opened via the 'loop browser'. It doesn't show the complete Halion screen you get when for example opening a piano
Thanks for the explanations. As for Halion SE, the stock sounds of particularly basic instruments like piano, guitar, bass etc, are embarrassingly atrocious and roughly equivalent to those in a lowly, cheap, keyboard/synth you could buy in 1980. No wonder then that it is free.
Some of the sounds are usable. It does have some half decent saxophone sounds. However in Halion Sonic 3 and Halion 6 you get some much more superior sounds. They are all Yamaha samples from the late 90s and 2000s. The harp sounds more like a guitar so I use another VST for harp sounds and I was never keen on the electric guitars in the basic set. As I have Halion 6 the basic set is pretty much obsolete to me although the drum kit does have some classic Yamaha drum sounds from the likes of the PSR-9000.
So a couple questions. #1 I purchased your Cubase 10.5 a few months back; are you offering any discounts to those whom would like to it your latest Cubase 11 Book? #2 (I haven't finished the video yet, so I'm not sure you answered this) Is SE an upgrade from Halion Sonic 3, or the base vesion of Halion Sonic?
