While our original plan was to install a WARN Zeon 10s onto our factory front Rubicon Steel Bumper, we got talking to our friends over at LoD Offroad and decided to change our plans and test out one of their all new, JL Destroyer Shorty front bumpers. Fortunately, it comes with a built in winch plate, a winch protector hoop with auxiliary light mounting tabs and ports to allow for the mounting factory fog lights. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see what it took to get both installed on JET Li, our Jeep JL Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. We hope you enjoy.
UPDATE: Factory LED fog lights that come in the standard plastic front bumper bolt right up to the LoD JL Destroyer Shorty Front Bumper and without any issues. LoD now offer an optional bracket that will allow you to install LED fog lights that come installed on a Rubicon steel front bumper. Click on the link below for more info:

you definitely are good with these videos. focus on the folks that appreciate it, and not the hate bait. keep it up bro
Thanks for the instructional install video. The bumper looks great. I have a LoD bumper on my 2010 JKUR and it has held up well. The finish on it has also held up well. They make a great product.
I put my front bumper on yesterday, my friend had to fabricate a new bracket for the fuel pump to move it over a bit so the winch would have room as I have a full bumper. Thank goodness my two friends were helping me. Well, have a nice day, have fun!
Just installed the same bumper on my wife's JL Rubi this afternoon. It had the factory plastic bumper, so the fogs fit no problem. The only thing I did differently, was to use the bolts to attach the skid plate cross member to the frame, then use the button head bolts to attach the skid plate to the bumper and cross member. Now researching winches...
I can't get over just how well these videos are done. Well Filmed.....VERY Fell Explained and easy clear instructions. These should be industry standard when installing equipment. Love this channel !
Thank you :)
This video helped me out so much installing my Mid LOD Signature series bumper. Thank you for going into the detail that you did.
Awesome, Glad it helped!
always a delight watching the videos. You make a lot of things i thought are complicated look easy peasy...Thanks for the video!!
LOL!! Glad to hear it :)
You have a knack for making these installations look easy.
Thank you I have been watching your build; have seen all of your videos. Great for a “newbie” like me.
Thanks again.
Glad to hear you've been enjoying our videos :)
Thank you. I used this info to install my 12-S. I got the same LOD stubby on my JLU really like it.
Awesome
Been looking at that Milwaukee electric ratchet, looks handy. I have their compact impact thats finally getting pretty worn.
Great install video! You do indeed make it look easy and it’s nice to see how much you can do by yourself with the right tools and the right amount of patience. After all the nite and bolts, it did seem odd to use an Allen wrench for the last ones with the cross member and brush guard. Looking forward to the next one!
Yup, anyone can do this stuff and I would encourage you to do so :)
When I purchase my JL in May, I think this might be the bumper I get. It is a little
Expensive when you add the options, but looks well worth it.
Glad you got a WARN winch. Stay classy my friends.
Great video Eddie! The new JL is well under way with its new mods!! I’m looking forward to making my trip in the spring of 2019. Thinking March. 👍. I hope to be on 35’s and lifted by then.
Thanks and 2019 is just around the corner.
I almost went with the LoD destroyer bumper for my jkur, I went back and forth trying to make up my mind but ended up getting the poison spyder mid width brawler bumper, putting it on this next coming weekend along with my new warn winch
Great Video, Very Informative. I just ordered my Destroyer Bumper and Im sure I’ll be playing this video as I do my install. Thank you very Much!!!!
Glad our video was of help to you :)
Great video , I’ve been having a hard time deciding what bumper to go with but you definitely just sold me on this one
Awesome
Your videos are very informative appreciate your time spent on giving us some good material thx keep up the good work OlllllO
Thank you, we're so glad to hear our videos have been helpful to you :)
Good call on the skid plate, sway bar dis is really in the line of fire on those. Looks great! 👍
Yeah, I actually like the look of the bumper better without the skid but, as you've noted, the swaybar disco motor is really a rock target.
Thank you so much for the updates. Please tell us what you do about the fog lights. these videos help a lot.
I bought a set of LED bulbs amzn.to/2uShM0I
Aloha from HAWAII, Ed. Once again thank you for the informative video. I was able to install my new WARN Zeon winch to my new JL Rubicon. Chee Hoooo \m/
Glad to hear it :)
JL journal is fast becoming my favorite series :D
Thank you! We're so glad to hear it :)
always exciting getting a new winch
Thanks for sharing. You give me inspiration for my Jeep build.
Glad to hear it!
Great video. You make the install look so easy! Nice addition to Jet Li.
Thanks! It really was that easy :)
Best Tech/How To Videos Out There!!! Thanks for sharing!
LOL!! Thanks Billy :)
Wayalife hey for an untechy guy like me these all help. From the Jk to the JL. May need you to get boned up on Surburban videos for me too..lol
of course, I'd rather see you use the original steel bumper, since it's already awesome, but I bet many people who got the plastic bumpers will find this helpful. I'm super happy with my stock steel bumper and I don't think I'll ever change it. I will remove the the ends and add a brush bar, winch and lights though. So many options available. such a fun truck.
Nice job getting the camera into all the small areas so we can see what is going on!
Thank you, it does take work and we appreciate you recognizing as much :)
My build for my 18 Rubicon JL is 2.5” RC spacer lift and 37” tires, was wondering how much drop or sag happened with weight of bumper and heavy Winch? I added a additional 3/4” RC spacer to the front and from before and after measuring found out it was perfect for Red Rock stubby bumper and Smittybilt 9500# rope Winch. It dropped the front exactly the 3/4” so maintained the 2.5” lift. I know the springs will set later but so far happy with the 3/4” spacer.
So glad I found your page I got the same exact jeep!
Glad to hear it :)
I think the LOD bumper looks awesome! Nothing wrong with the stock one either.
Yup, the stock bumper looks great too.
This is a bad bisssshhh I love itttttt you def have skills n talent
My wife's JLU Rubicon with plastic bumpers and led light group came with the regular bolt pattern for the fog lights. Hadn't seen the 2 bolt design.
It's new for the JL
This is a great channel, I learn a ton.
Thank you :)
Eddie, you installed that bumper and winch like you’ve done it a hundred times before. Once again, top notch video. Thank you !
How many bumpers would you say you’ve swapped in your days??
LOL - so glad that the video was helpful to you. Over the last 20+ years, I've installed quite a few front and rear bumpers on a LOT of different Jeeps.
Great install video and I like the aftermarket bumper much better than the stock one.
Thanks! :)
Great video but I like the stock bumper, even though the LOD is wayyyyy beefier. Wish the winch would have been recessed like the stock Rubicon bumper
Looks bad ass. New bumper comes with brackets to fit JK fog lights. Will the same bumper fit JK and JL frame?
Great video. I my self like the factory steal bumper and will probably just do a winch mount for it. Not that much rocks around here so don’t need the protection. I love the Milwaukee ratchet. I have one of the new ones that just came out. It replaced my old one which is the one you have. It have a lot more torque. You don’t need to brake the bolt and nuts with a ratchet. Take a look at them the Milwaukee fuel 12v
LOL! Now you have me wanting to buy a new electric ratchet!
The *puck* is actually called a wedge for holding the rope ;) we use em all the time to tie our lines when working with cranes ;) i'm a crane operator ! good install, why the LOD ?
Too funny. If anything, I would have called it a "wedge" but in the WARN instructions, they called it a "puck". Went with LoD for a few reasons. For one, we really wanted to have a winch for EJS and for two, they're friends of ours and were able to help us out in a pinch.
Beautiful JL! Forces me to second guess my decision to go with granite.
Nice review and great camera work...Kudos
Thank you :)
Another enjoyable made easy video. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. Do you know if this bumper will interfere with a front camera on a JL?
It's gorgeous!
Thank you :)
Great channel really enjoy the vids.
Thank you, we're so glad to hear it :)
I was hoping you would show how to install winch on the stock bumper. Great video as always and thanks for sharing. Please keep the DIY videos coming!! I’m getting more confident and informed working on my Jeep. 🤙🏽
Sorry, we needed a solution for carrying a winch before heading out to Moab. This was the best option we could come up with at the time.
i am so pumped for my my JL to arrive i just ordered mine in punkin orange
Awesome, congrats to you!
And no bleeding knuckles! Great video!
LOL!! Not this time around anyway :)
Great video! Now I'm scheming a way to convince my wife that I absolutely need to trade in my JKUR for a new JLUR...
Great video. Can you do a video discussing pros/cons on manual vs auto for off-roading?
We grew up driving manuals and it's what we know best and in a lot of ways, what we enjoy most BUT I'd be lying if I said there are any pros to wheeling one off road over an automatic. Or at least, for the kind of wheeling we do. Wheeling an automatic is like the difference between wheeling with lockers versus wheeling with open diffs.
The stock does look good but man the LoD is way better. Excellent video. Everything right where it should be nothing extra or in the way. Great for viewing although a pet cameo would be nice 👍 (and Cindy doesn’t count! but yeah more of her too, plz)
LOL - glad you like what you see and if you're referring to Tessa, we'll have to get her in sometime :)
YAY more videos! Keep it coming!
You bet - so glad you're enjoy them :)
So would you recommend By using steel bumper or rear bumper. Less damage if a an occasion on a wreck?
Your videos are poetry! 🎻
Hey, Wayalife I bought the LOD bumpers for my Jeep last year and this weekend I’m going to put the front one on. Last year I put the back one on. I like them. Good video by the way. Thank you.
Congrats to you on getting new LoD Bumpers.
I would love to have your take off bumpers
My man has like every tool you can think of.
LOL - that's what doing this for well over 20 years will get you :)
such a beauty
Awesome setup. It’s a bummer about those fog lights though.
From what I've been told, the fogs are ONLY different IF you get the steel bumpers. The LED fogs on all the other bumper are the same.
Eddie, does the winch require a fuse installed inline with the power cable? Recently saw someone that cut the end off the power cable and put an inline fuse in. I've never seen anyone else do that though. Any thoughts? thanks in advance!
It must be so nice working on a new jeep with bolts that are rusted and seized haha. That bumper looks good 👍
LOL!! Living out west, most of my bolts stay nice and easy to work on even on our older Jeeps. Okay, well, our really old Jeeps need some help :)
Lol...my thinking as well while watching. Just one nut/bolt can be a huge undertaking lasting hours or even days on my 37 year old CJ.
Brian K Kinney haha yeah it's always the smallest thing that holds up the project.
I was thinking the same thing! Even when my ZJ was fairly new, wrenching on it in New England was a PITA.
nice work. Not a fan of the button heads for the skid plate, but I don't see why you disconnected the battery.
LOL!! Honestly, I don't know why either. It was just in the instructions and I was following them.
Excellent video. Many thanks for sharing.
You bet, glad you enjoyed it :)
Great work , thank you ! :)
You bet, glad you liked what you saw :)
ohhhhhh yeah!
Thanks for swift response!!
I will probably order the LOD.
Are you sticking with keeping the rear bumper off?
I'd really like to. I'm not crazy about loading down the rear end with a super heavy rear bumper.
what did you do with your factory bumper. I cant seem to find one like that for sale
Can you add info about the cost of these installs and where to buy them?
Nice video
Can I have that Rubicon front bumper for my 2020 Sahara Unlimited?
Does anyone use this bumper to flat tow behind a motorhome. Is it attached to the frame strong enough to do this?
just a though, you maybe able to disassemble the mounting housing for the JL fog lights and mount the JL LED headlights into the JK mounting housing. A good way to save $500.00 on purchasing aftermarket fogs.
It's a good thought but if you look at it carefully, you'll see that the housing is molded plastic and not something you can disassemble. That being said, the LED fog light issue is only an issue with ones that come on the steel bumper group. If you have a plastic bumper, the LED fogs for it should still work just fine. Most people with the steel bumper group will not be swapping it out for a different bumper like I did.
That stinks they are manufactured that way. Good thing for made in china amazon specials, you can get new ones cheap :). True to the bumper comment, that why so many of them trolled you on this video. I wish people would learn that its your jeep, which means you get to build it how you want. If they want to pay you to build it in their style then that's a different story. The JLU looks great and I enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching you build this thing out.
LOL!! Thank you for that. I really do appreciate it :)
After having the LOD bumper and rock rails for a while i would like to here you thoughts on durability. I'm thinking of buying the LOD destroyer rock rail and front bumper.
So far so good. They've been holding up well for us and doing a good job of protecting our JL.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing 🏆.😊
You're welcome. We're glad you liked it :)
Now for a MOAB video with this JL in Action :)
LOL!! It's in the works now.
I was gonna order this but I'm not sure if my foglights from my 21 wrangler sport altitude will fit.
It's only the steel bumper fog lights that won't fit. You should be fine.
Any chance the factory bumper and skid plate are for sale?
I want your life lol. So many unbelievablely expensive jeeps!
You make it look so easy.
Question I have a 2023 Wrangled 2 door Rubicon. Would like to do the same bumper and winch but also would like to tow 4 down are the D rings acceptable to attach a tow bar?
Sorry, not 100% sure about fitment but strength is all there.
Nice car
First : Nice Videos - thanks for that from Germany. How high is your Jeep JL now ? (Garage entry...)
To the top of the windshield, about 75". No problems getting into a standard garage with a 7' header.
Great video as always. I’m excited for more companies coming out with accessories for our JL’s. Oh. And where can I pick up a “waya life” window decal? Thanks
Thanks! And yes, it's great to see more and more companies coming out with stuff. As far as decals go, this link should help you out : www.wayalife.com/store/categories.php?cat=8
Never mind. Google is my friend. Haha. Keep up the great work on the vids. Hopefully we run into you guys one of these days.
Is there any Warranty issues now that you have changed the front frame supports from Factory, and what about the light wiring is it made for LEDs they take way less power then the old light's?
Your dealership would need to prove that any modification you made to your Jeep was the caused whatever problem it is that you are trying to have covered under warranty. The LED's take the same amount of power.
Nice!
Much nicer looking and stronger than the stock bumper. Just kind of disappointed that LOD didn't think through the LED fog light mounting option for JL owners.
In truth, it really wasn't their fault. The LED fogs on the standard plastic bumper are the same as what we installed. It's only on the optional steel bumper that the fogs are different and they're working on a new bracket for it.
Wayalife ahhh ok very good. Looks great either way.
First of all, great video and nice bumper! I have a question, the new JL comes with an optional ‘4 button Aux power switch.’ All the reviews I have read state that it’s designed for wiring in optional mods such as LED light bars and a winch. Your JLU looks fully loaded. So I am assuming yours came with this option. If it did, why didn’t you wire the winch to be compatible with the new Aux power switch? Thank you for your time and Looking forward to all your future videos.

More times than not, a lot of the winching I do is with me standing outside of my Jeep and that's where a remote control comes in handy. For the times that I need to be winching and driving, I still think it'd be a LOT easier to do that with a remote than having to reach all the way over to one of the aux buttons and try to make sure I'm getting the right one while attempting to navigate my way through a tough situation. Of course, that's just me.
Go get led fog light from factory for a newer jk it’ll bolt right up
No need. I got LED bulbs for the JK fogs I installed and they work great.
Wayalife awesome! Love the jeeps and love the content. Keep up the great work. Jealous of all your builds 👍🏻🇺🇸
Hey Ed, have you found a steel bumper for the JL that works well with the factory LED fog lights??
Please note that the ONLY LED fog lights to have issues are the ones that come in the Rubicon steel bumper. The LED's that come in the standard plastic factory bumpers work fine. ALSO, LoD has since come out with new brackets that do allow for the use of Rubicon steel bumper LEDs.
Can you mount a winch on/in the factory steel JL bumper or is an aftermarket bumper required?
You can mount it in a steel bumper but you will need a winch plate.
I would think it would be better if the bolt went in from the top in case the nut came loose from vibration over time, that way the bolt at least stays in the hole some time before it could fall out and be discovered and saved from having bigger issues with the winch itself.
I have been doing this for over 25 years now. During that time, I have NEVER seen a winch bolt come loose.
Looks GREAT! 👍
Thanks :)
Hello! Was just wondering if you powder coated the bumper before installing? I will be installing mine soon, but not sure if I should add an additional layer. I am already seeing some rusty parts on my EVO tire reinforcer, which is also the same as yours.
Nope, I just installed it as is.
When I looked at this bumper it says it is not compatible with warn zeon series winches? I'm assuming that's not the case since you just put one on. Confused as to why it says that on quadratecs website
Quadratec doesn't know what they're talking about.
I am debating this exact setup vs the Poison Spider crawler bumper for my diesel rubicon, any idea which is better? Any differences? Thanks for the video!
Aside from looks, which is pretty similar too, they're both about the same. PS is made by 4WP and LoD is made by a guy in Indiana.
Are you selling the oem front bumper ?
Great video. Really enjoyed it. One thing I’d love to have you “review” is how your MPG is changing. I’ve heard good things about the JL fuel economy, but does adding 37s and winches and steel bumpers put it back about the same as a JK or are you still getting better MPG than a JK?
Jeremy McLerran - Well yeah our MPG has changed, how could it not. That being said, our JL with all these mods are STILL getting much better MPG than our JK with a 3.8L ever did and even our JK with a 3.6L. Driving a thousand miles out to Moab doing about 70-80 MPH and crossing over multiple mountain ranges, wheeling a week worth of low range wheeling and then driving home again, we STILL managed to average 14.5 MPG. We posted up about all this on post #6 here: jlwrangler.com/showthread.php?962-WAYALIFE-MOAB-EJS-2018-An-All-NEW-Pilgrimage-to-the-Promised-Land
LOL
Just for you irob rf ;)
if you still have the factory bumper are you willing to sell it?
