Rugged Ridge AmFib Snorkel HOW TO INSTALLATION on a Jeep JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator Truck

  • As any self-respecting overlander knows, you need a snorkel to complete a good overland build and when Rugged Ridge first debuted their AmFib Snorkel for the Jeep JL Wrangler and JT Gladiator Truck at the 2018 SEMA Show, everyone and their mother wanted to get their hands on one. Why you might ask? Well, unlike most snorkel kits, the AmFib requires no cutting of the hood or of any body panel for that matter and it requires very little modification to get it installed. Also, Rugged Ridge designed the AmFib to be installed in two different configurations, as a Low Mount cowl intake that looks totally factory and as a High Mount intake that gives it a traditional snorkel look that most people are familiar with. In this video, you'll see just how quick and easy it is to get one on your JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator.
NOTE: This Rugged Ridge AmFib was a pre-production kit and so I did need to buy some push fasteners from my local O'Reilly Auto Parts store. It is my understanding that these fasteners are included with product kits.
ALSO : Because I know it's coming, yes, I know that the 3rd rubber fitting under the air box is for the ambient air tube. LOL

I honestly don’t like the look of most snorkels but Rugged Ridge knocked it out of the park with this one. The two different positions and it looks so good.

The low mounted version was exceptionally well done and very factory like.

I understand the utility of the high mount but, I agree with Eddie on the low mount, if you're in water deep enough for the low mount to be an issue, you got bigger problems.

OS RR high mount is more for dust than water though I believe the low mount is good for those mall crawlers bc it would allow more dust in than the high mount and we all know those mall crawlers only deal with city smog lol

This video is the one that convinced me to get the RR AmFib Snorkel. LOVE IT! I switch back and forth from Snorkel to Cold Air side cowl intake. I really liked the idea of not having to cut a hole in the side of the hood and the install was very easy. If you've done any kind of installs of anything on a vehicle, this is simple. One thing I did pick up from another install video was to rotate the clamps so the screw adjustment is under the intake tunnel, this keeps you from scraping your arms or snagging your shirt on the worm screws. Also, I've seen the exterior snorkel and cowl parts painted to match the jeep from another YT video, and it looks super sharp.
One thing that also should be mentioned, do not tighten the clamps too tight (What me?), especially if you live in a warm climate, as the plastic on the connectors will deform. I did that, but with a little careful use of a heat gun was able to get them back into the proper shape. A suggestion is that RR beef up the plastic connectors where the rubber tunnel connects with a thin metal strip on the inside of the tunnel that is pop rivetted to the plastic to reduce the likelihood of the tunnel deforming from someone tightening too much on the worm screws. I'm thinking of trying the metal strip myself if I see the plastic deform again.
As for a lightbar, I've purchased, not yet installed, an interior light bar that mounts on the inside of the windshield looking out, because of the roof mounted lightbar support conflict, to reduce road noise (More aerodynamic) and well, I liked the stealthiness of the interior lightbar (One less item to snag on tree limbs and one less thing for "sticky hands" to snag from your rig). Don't know how LEOs will view the legality of a lightbar not being covered on road, it's technically not an "exterior" light, but does shine to the outside, I guess I will find out soon.

If you've ever seen someone do Cape York in Australia, you'll understand why you really want this to be waterproof. Considering you can't really legally run 40's here (only 2 inchs bigger than stock) and maximum a 2 inch lift (although people run bigger) the higher and more waterproof you can get that snorkel, the better.

    All done! Lessons learned-
    1. No reason to remove that bolt under snorkel plate assembly
    2. Those battery wrenches don’t have torque settings like drills, so go easy. (I accidentally cracked the plastic around the bolt under snorkel assembly when putting back since no reason to remove).
    3. HOLD ON TO BOLTS and POPUP inserts. Lost items get really lost in engine. Nope, they don’t always fall through.
    4. Start bolts in air box top before installing. You may drop one.
    5. Be gentle piping out the popup pins, they can fly out and get lost.
    6. Removed Foam piece can be trimmed and reinstalled.
    7. Plastic nut on back of pitcock valve does not get very tight.
    8. Says to leave pitcock valve open and close when needed, not sure what is better.

  • @c4onmylip
    @c4onmylip 4 года назад

The fact that it is full bolt on with no cutting and has a really clean look is really appealing to me. The only additional thing I would want to do to it is color match and wrap (white in my case) the cowl adapter for symmetry.

The low profile snorkel looks the best.
I think the idea of bringing in fresh ambient air would be the main usefulness of this item, rather than under hood temps.
Although in colder climates it may make the motor run different.
If your in water over that you will have other areas that water can enter, like differentials/transfer case breathers, any electrical connection that hasn't been waterproofed, etc.

I like everything but the top part of the snorkel. A rely thought out product except for that. It just says branch catcher and rip me off. A more angled back one blending into the rest of the tube would solve this. I would buy this product, but modify that head thing. So I guess I need a jeep gladiator first to do it. Thanks Eddie, good to see you recovered from SEMA
