I ABSOLUTELY AGREE!! With all of this effort of not only this video (but others), you have my thumbs up ALL of the time. You do such a great job. Thank you. (my son of 6 yrs old loves to watch your videos whenever you post a new one). Thank you again.
The more that time goes on, the more I appreciate and respect you for not selling out and doing sponsored bits during your videos. Your videos are scientific, honest, and to the point, and I cannot express how big a deal that is to me. Thank you for all you do, and the way you do it, and as always I look forward to the next one!
As much as I respect that, I don't have a problem with sponsored posts when they're honest about the sponsorship. There are very few who do it right, but Linus of LTT will often eviscerate a sponsor during testing if their product isn't up to snuff. I'd rather see him get paid for his hard work, time, and dedication. I appreciate that he does it all. I mean, his main source of income is Patreon (outside of personal career). At worst, He's barely cracking $2450 a month, which isn't much and at most, around $10k a month which sounds like lot, until you consider all of the testing, products, and time he has to put into one video, let alone 4-5 a month on top of farm and other expenses. Basically, sponsored doesn't mean unbiased, nor does it mean a bad video.
@@caodesignworks2407 Rose Anvil is another tester that does pretty good at the good, the bad, and the ugly. The only ones willing to sponsor him are the ones willing to stand up to the test.

@@ProjectFarm you probably hear it every day but it's true. We hate weeding through the bullshit just to be disappointed. Thank you for all of your work
Hands down best RUclips reviewer. No bullshit just realistic testing and comparisons. I swear every thing I'm looking to buy, he's reviewed and compared.
Now that you've done this winch test, I think you should do a synthetic winch line test. There are so many out there for so cheap that seem like they'd break at weights way lower than what they're rated for. Synthetic winch lines are so much safer than cable, and are becoming really popular.
Thank you for your work, Todd! Definitely need a round two with the Harbor Freight 12000lb Apex (with synthetic rope), and the WARN they compare it to.
@@ProjectFarm Please do a test on HF Badlands APEX 12KLbs comparing to Warn 12KLbs winch. I hear APEX are very good and wants to see the real test competing with Warn.
@johnpodo can confirm that the Badlands 12K with synthetic rope is a work horse! I have it on my 22 ram 2500 6.7l 4x4 CCLB and use it constantly on job sites and off-roading. For the price and the 2+ years of abuse with no problems, I'm happy. Then again, the Warn on my power wagon has held up pretty good in it's duties.
I can't even guess how much money you've saved people from spending. There should be reviews like this for everything. I end up watching tests for things I'll never even buy, they're just fascinating.
Same here I love to see how much a difference in price makes for each tool, also with this info we can learn more $$ doesn't = a better product always.
Could it be that PF receives krypto funds for promoting brands into his off shore account? But how much would they pay (including all materials, merchandise, miscellaneous etc. used in testing) 50-60K per test, 100-150K? I noticed his channel is not monetized? If he monetized & accepted non-relevant sponsors he’d make way more than these under-ether bribe payments. Not saying he does accept them, there are still honest people who don’t crave extravagant life. But curious about monetization.
What amazes me is how with 2.81 million subscribers, Todd still finds a way to respond to almost EVERY comment on the videos! Hi Todd! Great video, I was surprised, I thought the Warren and the Badland would top the charts, this was eye opening!
@@dubious6718 that is possible although given the range of topics in the comments it would be very hard to create a bot to determine which are suggestions, which are simply compliments, which are feedback, and most importantly the emotion of the comment. Project farm responds with equal emotion typically which makes me think it's a full time employee or multiple employees. They respond to comments on every single video daily and most replies are very human like. not saying its impossible but it's unlikely
One of the most critical tests of a winch is whether it survives working under water. Recovering your vehicle from a mud/water hole is a huge reason why we purchase a winch. My last purchase was based on an old winch shootout from Petersen’s off road magazine; it’s worth a google and read!
yeah when i sank my for 92 f150 i was glad when my badland still worked under water got me out and then we had a bad flood i was out pulling cars out and other things for 3 days for 300 bucks i was impressed with it
I've heard that there is a huge strength difference between low end and name brand synthetic rope. Since 2 failed in your tests, it would be cool to see a few brands tested.
There can be but biggest difference I have noticed is due to the diameter rope used. Some sellers may save a few $$ by going with smaller rope. But it's cheap and easy to swap out for bigger.
For the most part, they are all pretty similar with the exception of some cheaper winches using smaller lines. There are companies like master pull that have genuinely stronger and better built ropes but you will pay a cost because they can be well over $600-$800 for a 100’ rope.
This test was great! I would love to see you do this test again in the future, but strictly with synthetic line. Throw in a few real world scenarios like a stuck truck or winching over an obstacle. Some brands to add to the list would be Comeup, and Harbor Freight's Badland 12K Apex winch.
@@ProjectFarm yeah I would want to see the 600$ apex winch in action. It’s a fairly new product and it seems like a bunch of off road RUclips channels are switching to it.
I've had the Zeak on the front of 2 Jeeps now. Countless rescues, been out in the elements without a cover for over a year, and the dang thing just keeps impressing me. Gotta admit, I was still surprised it did so well in your tests. It's a definite budget power house! Unfortunately looks like they're no longer available though.
If you're going to test the Badland against the upper end Warn and Super Winch you have to use the Apex Badland. That is the one Harbor Freight considered comparable to Warn.
@@whiskeykilmer1866 Nope. The higher end winches are made in Oregon. I actually have the 12k Warn VR Evo, synthetic line on a Land Rover. It had a bad solenoid out of the box, but Warn sent out a replacement immediately, & it works fine now.
The Harbor Freight APEX seems to be on everyone's "Beat This" list. One thing I would like is the length of each rope. This can vary quite a bit. This was VERY informative, Thank You!
Totally agree I was disappointed not to see the Apex here. A 5k pull untill over heating would be a great test to see their endurance. Then possibly do it again 5 or 10 times in a row to see how they handle repeated abuse. Was very excited to see this video but I don't feel any closer to knowing if I want the Apex or the Smittybuilt, the smittybuilt is the cheapest name brand winch with a lifetime mechanical warranty
If you're buying a throw away winch (very few repair parts available) it makes more sense to get the cheaper version. Also I have seen pictures and videos of the Apex case breaking. One of them is posted on the wranglerstar RUclips channel.
I was so excited when I saw the video but a bit disappointed the Badland Apex wasn't tested. Maybe on a future one. Regardless, thanks for making amazing content!
@@NoName-ml5yk that wranglerstar video has SO MANY issues with how he used it. Listen to all the off-road recovery channels that use the Apex and swear by it. Many are unsponsored too.

Very informative as always! It’s hilarious how many times I refer to one of your videos that I saw months ago when it’s time to buy something. You’re that guy everyone can count on to perform unbiased and accurate tests. Not just helping customers, but keeping different brands accountable for what they claim as well! Thank you sir!
I've had that Zeak for just under two years. It's pulled several cars out of ditches, righted a rolled Deere and dragged several dozen 10ft, 26" pine logs up the side of a canyon. Haven't had an issue with it yet. Great tests.
Ive been a die hard badland guy for years. This really makes me rethink my loyalties. Feel it was kinda let down by the poor quality plate though. I dont trust any mounting plates currently on the market. Im a fabricator so i designed my own that ive rated for 12,000lbs and ive had over 14,000lbs on it and it hasnt broken. Im sure who ever made the ones you had would rate mine over 30,000lbs 😅 Id be very happy to donate one to your channel! Would find it cool for you to test it against all the others on the market. Im just a joe blow, not a company or manufacturer so its not like im sponsoring you. Just think it would be cool to see something some guy makes in the garage for $25 beat out everything companies make that cost 4 times as much.
Like others have suggested, I'd like to see how the Badlands Apex stands up to the others and I'd also love to see a test of synthetic winch lines and kinetic ropes. Awesome videos! I'm a huge fan of this channel and recommend it often to other people.
me too on that APEX....I'm not sure which Badlands winch it was in this video...i know mine didn't cost $350 tho...more like $650 I think....but if the rope busted tomorrow and they told me I had to pay $1000 for another one? I'd buy 2 just in case the price went up again.
I bought a Zeak 13K for my Bronco project just based on written reviews. This is the first comprehensive and objective physical test I've seen! I'm feeling a lot better about my choice now, thank you!
One thing to add here is the Warn EVO is the cheap Chinese made model they sell. If you get the zeon it is larger, designed completely differently and USA made. Would be cool to see you test that one at some point.
Agreed fair comparison to the winches he tested as they are all made in china and in the same general price range. But i do agree i think the pricer american made warns are best.
If that's a "cheap" Chinese made model. I'd hate to see what the non "cheap" model costs. Either way unless it performs 300-500% better, people are just being silly fanboys.
@js6033 the Zeon line is the premium warn products, for what it's worth its actually one of the few winches on the market that can actually work when fully submerged underwater, and it's has an insane warranty, mechanicals forever and electrical for 7
totally agree, but there are a few folks on YT that have tested Warn to Warn, so you can extrapolate the data, all-be-it not as fun as having @ProjectFarm do it from his non bias position
Awesome Todd! Your real world testing is amazing. No holds barred. In a world where everything gets sugarcoated you are a breath of fresh air. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I never thought I would enjoy a video on winches so much.
I love your reviews I would suggest comparing the Badland 12K Apex winch - thats the one Matt's Offroad (another famous RUclipsr) is using. It would be amazing to see any performance differences that winch may or MAY NOT have. In addition it would provide perspective of what can be achieved in real situations with the Badland 12K Apex as the baseline from Matts recoveries.
Keep in mind that Matt also ditches the stock line and installs a Freedom Recovery line. It would be interesting to see what the winches in this video that did break their lines, could do with an upgraded line.
finally someone doing an independent review on actual performance I kind of figured those rope winches ropes are not as strong but was surprised that Warn has dropped so low used to be the standard for all winches back in the day I had one
When Warn was made in the US, they were tops in consumer products but Ramsey's US made commercial products were better. Milemarker's hydraulic products were great but expensive and complex to install on a vehicle. MMs electrics were subpar at that time. A Warn US 8274 is always gonna be darn tough to beat. A Warn US M8000 is a lot of winch for the money. All the cheap chinese junk is junk so spend what you can and buy the warranty you need.
@@mwilliamshs A fellow Ramsey enthusiast. They were the only brand to have in the late 80's, early 90's. Warn was the economy brand. Somehow Ramsey faded away and Warn became the brand to have. With Badlands being the economy winch.
You must of been one of those kids that took everything apart to see how it worked. Appreciate all of project farms reviews. Anytime Im in the market for something guess where I come before researching. Your reviews always help me. You are a time saver. Love your work. Oh how come there is no thumbs up option on here. How could somebody leave 43K thumbs down. At first I hit it too thinking it was a thumbs up but corrected it.
I'm mostly retired but I have worked part time for a lawn and garden shop doing pick up and delivery. The trailer is 10 years old and has a 4000 lb Warn winch. I can tell you from experience that it has never failed us and it gets used almost every day. Having said that, I have a 3500 lb Badlands winch on out SXS for occasional use and it works fine as well. I love these videos. Thanks.
When (hoping) you do round two, I would like to see the winches that failed that were bolted to the bent winch plate revisited. Just to rule out its failure due to the bent plate.
Heck ya! I have been waiting for a winch test!!!! Seems like the Zeak, with a quality dynema rope as backup, a couple snatch blocks and a couple winch covers still puts me way under the price of a Warn (which is the one I was looking at). I know this community really appreciates all you do.
Great video...as always. I've been winching trucks out of stucks since the 1970s. Back then, Warn or PTO winches were the pretty much the only game in town. As more brands appeared, quality seemed to suffer. I replaced a 1980s 8000 pound Warn winch that saved my axe a bunch of times. It cooked wiring harnesses, alternators and broke cable but ALWAYS got me out. The clutch assembly finally exploded on it's last pull. I replaced it with a Superwinch (2010ish) 8500. It wouldn't pull like the Warn and burned out on it's first rodeo. I replaced it and after about 10 moderate pulls, the replacement has started to smoke. I now always run a block pully on my winch to double the pulling power so as not to tax the winch. It also slows the pull by half that lets you see things going array. The most critical thing to me in a winch is not line speed or pulling power (they all lie). It is RELIABILITY. That winch has to work after sitting out in the weather or driving through hours and hours of road spray or caked in goo. I would love to see these winches pulling to destruction. That's not the evil voice in my head but strictly a desire to see some sort of endurance/reliability/quality of each. Pulling that much amperage also fries everything in the charging circuit. And the thermal overload protection kicks many of them off before you get out of the hole you're in. Those without will have smoke rising from the alternator and battery cables as they melt down. My Dad's old oil field Dodge Power Wagon with a brutal PTO could bend that truck in two if needed. And it would do it until you ran out of trucks to bend.
A lot of folks in my 4x4 club run winches and this topic comes up often. It will be nice to have this video to share when it comes time. I think testing duty cycle is also important to see how the winches will perform under long hauls. Thanks for another great video.
The Warn VR EVO 12S and the Badlands Apex 12000 are probably the 2 most popular winches in the off-road community. Adding these to the list for a future video would a great.
@@Foxfatherracing I have the smaller 5000 badlands on my tilt deck trailer and it works fine. I just use a snatch block doubler if I'm worried about overloading it, which you probably do too
I am surprised that so many ropes broke before their load rating was achieved, scary! a winch line test would be cool. As far as other winches go the higher end Warn and the Apex should be tested. Thanks for your content.
For what it’s worth. Saber Off Road are obsessed with bench testing their recovery gear (including winch rope) should you need a replacement. I’ve got no $take in the company although they are local to me.
Your reviews are the best. I have been looking at winches in this class. The Zeak was on my list and a few days after this was posted, the winch sold out on Amazon. I don't think this was a coincidence, your reviews have an undeniable impact. Keep up what your doing, your content is some of the best of it's type on RUclips! I ended up getting the Zesuper 12k. Amazon gave me a flashdeal that I couldn't turn down ($288 with tax and S&H). Since I won't be able to mount this to my GX470 right away, I made sure to bench test the winch as the 30 day refund period might end before it is mounted. Everything worked well under these conditions. The winch was smooth, quiet, and the rope pulled out easily.
How do you like the winch you bought at this point? I bought a Jeep that had a Badlands ZXR on it (same one from this video) and it works fine, I just want a synthetic line and wireless remote. I can get the wireless controller for mine at Harbor Freight for around $40 it seems, so I may just do that until my steel cable frays. What's your opinion on that?
Add in the Harbor Freight Apex winch next time. I'd also be curious for you to compare steel cable vs synthetic rope. Comparing winch mounting plates in hopes of finding one that would hold up could be handy too.
Your Testing continues to get more technical and better with every item you test. Just amazing the progress and improvement your channel has made over the years.
I'd like to see you disassemble the gear boxes to see how well they are greased and if there are any plastic or weak parts used. Also, you could leave them out in the sun/weather to see how well they hold up to exposure.
It seems there was a disadvantage in winch mounting. I'd be interested in seeing how the badlands winch performed on the mount the zeak was on....they should have all been used on the same mount.
Been seeing these recovery ropes now that say their better then the straps? That’s one I would love to see proven which is really better strength, etc?
@ProjectFarm Good morning, I'm an automotive technician and love seeing your non biased reviews. I've scrolled through and haven't found a socket review. I'd like to see a 6 point socket review from the tool truck manufacturers (i.e. Mac, Matco, Snap-On, and some others like craftsman.). Maybe even throw in the GP Duo (my socket of choice) Thank you for your great, informative, and non biased reviews. Thanks again, Greg.
Fascinating test! I live in the past, and didn’t realize some winches I’d considered American are now made in China. I have the HF Badlands 12,000 with remote, and it works fine. But due to the current trend of saving money and drum space by carrying only 65’ of line, I had to go back to the HF Road Shock 10,000 I bought around 2013 (to replace a Ramsey REP8000 stolen off my car trailer), when I needed the 100’ of line on the older winch to reach some logs. Like you, I’ve purchased a receiver mount, but put more faith in the heavier receiver mounts I’ve fabricated. I believe all or nearly all electric winches are rated with one wrap on the drum and all conditions ideal. PTO winches have honest ratings; my old 10,000 lb. Ramsey really is made to pull 10,000 lbs. and with a 304 International behind it can be expected to pull until something breaks. I’ve used Kevlar straps in the industrial world (straps to lift a 135 ton generator rotor are a fraction the weight of the old steel cable straps), but I live in a world of abrasion and rough treatment, so I stick with steel cable. Thanks for all the great info!👍
Back in the day the 10,000lb Ramsey was the winch to have. The Warn was the economy brand back then. They always seemed to have solenoid issues, were slow, and had an issue with free spooling under a heavy load. The Ramsey had a planetary fear system that never failed.
@@fauxque5057 I'm not sure what 'back in the day' was for you, but for the last 40+ years Warn has been king with their 8274. It is almost dangerously fast if in the wrong hands, and was very under rated on capacity.
There are still a few Warn that are USA made. I believe much of the 8274 production is still in the USA, but they do use global components too. I think Warn Zeon final assembly is the USA
I'd love to see a test on LED off road lights. Rigid vs Baja design vs cheap amazon lights. Testing spots and floods, 52" light bars, and the single pod lights. Would be interesting to see the amps being drawn, the water resistance, the light output and distance between all the brands. Thanks for all the amazing tests you do!
I love that you do these videos! Especially how you come up with tests to put the products head to head! At least with the winches it seems like there should be a longevity test. You’d expect a new winch could get you out of a jam. But what you really need is a reliable winch time after time. When you need it most!
It'd be interesting to see if they'll cover it under warranty since you technically didn't exceed the rating on the box. When I buy tools, I like to have confidence that the brand will honor their warranty, but this often isn't the case anymore.
@@dubious6718 He never exceeded the ratings of the winches. That's all they should worry about. I really would want to know if any of these winches actually could meet the rating. It would probably only happen with only a single layer of wire/rope on the drum, but even so it seems a lot of them wouldn't meet the rating as the wire/rope broke well below the rated pull. Also how much abuse do the wire/rope withstand? I know that if it starts to "climb" and chinch on the drum it can weaken the wire. Are any of them better at preventing this than the rest? Way way back when I was a kid I remember that there were a winch at a marina that had a mechanism that controlled how the cable was spooled up just to make sure that it didn't chinch or climb over itself. To work It did require that the cable had some tension when it was spooled up, but once the slack was taken out it carefully directed it back and forth over the drum. This was about fifty years ago so I can't remember the details of how it achieved this, but I do remember standing beside it watching as the cable was unspooled and spooled back up again over and over again.
@@blahorgaslisk7763 The winches stopped before they reached max capacity to protect them self. He didn't reach the rated capacity cause he had to much rope on the spool, like mentioned.
This is good info for 'out of the box' performance. One real test is how they hold up. We do not have a single Warn winch in our 29 member off road club. The reason is they seem to fail just when you need them most. And that is quite often. We have three Smittybuilt and I do not remember ever having a problem with them. The most popular winch is the Badland Apex. We never have had a failure with them. We DO break winch ropes and cable quite often. The ropes go most of the time after some chaffing. The cables, we have learned, MUST to be replaced when about ten or twelve strands break. We roughly figure we lose about 100 lbs of pulling power per strand. The fact that NONE of the winches made their rated 12,000 lbs of pull is very telling.
They didn't make their rated 12k because that is only valid with a single wrap rope. More wraps, the lower they go as the spool gets bigger and the leverage decreases. To get 10k with 5 wraps is well beyond spec.
For round 2 couple of interesting things to test are: What happens if you put larger gauge battery leads to the winch, or change the solenoid-winch wires as well. The branch winch I currently use, have this line in their owners manual that if you want to use it in racing / competitive environment purchase a 50mm2 or 70mm2 cables. Also it would be cool to see some other 'destructive' tests like when and if the breaks fail - if you use a winch a line line to pull another vehicle with your car (just driving, not using it as a winch but just as a rope). For some reason all the user manuals don't allow to do that. And cold and damp testing would be interesting also. I've had many cheaper winches fail in winter times here in Estonia where we sometimes have -25C degree weathers.
Those would be interesting to see! My guess is vibrations on the road resulting in the gears shifting to allow the "rope" of the winch to lengthen slowly, resulting in Bad Things (tm) happening after a point in time when the thing you're pulling is on a rope two meters long instead of a tow-hitch that pivots at an easily accounted for point.
Besides some racing/competitive environment it seems odd that speed of pull was so emphasized, most speeds are sufficient & slower/variable is often ideal & safer. Reliability & durability are more important, but more difficult to test for, am I missing something?
@@assertivekarma1909 depends on what kind of stuff you do. If you rarely use your winch, line speed isn't as important. If you like to push the limits and have to use it a lot more often, it matters a lot. If speed didn't matter you could get a much cheaper winch and just run a snatch block as well (more than doubles the pull, 2x for the snatch block, plus a bit for having less cable on the drum)
I probably will never need to buy or use a winch but I like watching these videos! No wasted second, every minute is full of data. The best informative channel on RUclips!
Good idéa. I have used both under pretty severe conditions. The synthetic is easier to handle and better for "normal" use. You have to replace it more often than a vire rope. If you do more extreme recovery at max load or are using snatch blocks, the wire rope is the best option.
Awesome video! I can't believe some of the $600 don't include wireless remotes haha! This is an excellent comparison with tons of accurate data. Couldn't believe the Smittybuilt didn't come pre assembled and it's $700+ hahaha BTW I loved the safety weights. Very smart and safe!!!

Every now and then I see you get a shout-out while I'm watching other content and it's because they respect the effort, as do we all! All the best!
Excellent test. It is a real shame, those mounting brackets are as light as they are and not heavy duty, which also leads to twisting of the winch. Thank you for this honest and well thought out review.
I've had my Zeak on the front of my Yota for about 1.5years now. One, I didnt expect too see it in this test, and two I didnt expect it to actually perform but its been a great winch. I dont use it a ton but it does come in handy, and the rope and wireless remote out of the box is a nice feature.

Please do the apex compared to the others, and test the winches from only 1 wrap, they’re stronger at that point😁 and use all synthetic rope if possible
I have a Zeak 13k, and have been impressed with it, especially for the price. Awesome to see my experience in the field/trails has matched with the rigors of a Project Farm showdown! (Always love the Farmabago content lol) Ideas for round 2, upgraded/thicker wiring, and a stronger bigger diameter synthetic rope. And of course the Apex brand winch, along with the pricey Warn Zeon.
I have US-built Warns (M8000 and an 8274) on my rock crawlers, but I have a Zeak on my daily. The little China winches are great if you don't need line speed. Most of those winches come out of the same factory anyway, why pay $700 for one?
Great review as always. Would have liked the inclusion of how hot they got, what it took to stay within the run/cool-down times/temperatures, and how that might have affected the pull times.
I'm almost certainly never going to be in the market for a winch, enjoyed the video as always nonetheless :) a suggestion for a future video - garage door insulation panels. I just installed some and they help but there are quite a few different kinds (some mount flush, others create an air gap) as well as weather stripping for the surrounds. I'd be interested in the results & it could be an interesting exercise designing test criteria and methods.
OMG, I love this channel anytime I need to buy something I come here first. The public service your channel provides is legitimately amazing Please keep up the good work!
Love the Zeak winch. Put them on every 4x4 and trailer build I do now. I’ve used a lot of these winch brands and before this test could never put a finger on why I always gravitated to the Zeak besides how consistent and easy the unlock and unreeling is. Now I know!
Couldn’t have come at a better time. I love how I learn about these brands that are so obscure but good quality. All your videos seem like you're having a blast. Keep it up.
Another great video. It would have been nice to see the Badland Apex 12,000 pound winch tested. This is a very popular model. It's very similar in design to SuperWinch and may be manufactured in the same factory. A synthetic versus steel winch line test would be great as well. Keep up the awesome work.
Another well made test! I would love to also see a video comparing wire strippers… I have seen all the hand tool videos you have made and it as an electrician is like to see your opinion on wire strippers as well
I like my yellow Klein, nice $12 USA made. Drawback, it doesn't have a close lock (so it's always sprung open). I can't deny I'd rather have the Pittsburg strippers. I would like to see such comparisons!
It would probably be too difficult to do, but with most new engines being direct injected, a comparison of the various intake valve cleaning sprays might be interesting to watch. Some of them actually work, but my understanding is that to really clean the valves you have to remove the intake and scrape out the carbon manually. Great video!
@@nucleargrizzly1776 'most' is true, but there are still some that stick to only direct, which is a problem and requires more maintenance than people realize
@@j.m.5995 No you don't, you just have to pull the intake manifold. Depending on the engine that can be a huge job, but it's usually not too bad if the car isn't turbo. You can clean it at home with a drill and some zip ties stuck in the chuck.
I’ve owned both a warn and Ramsey winches a long time ago, and I would love to see the Ramsey tested. It had more pull by a long shot, and the warn was faster. I feel if you need a pull, you need more grunt than speed in most cases.
The on thing Warn had as an advantage when they were still being built in the US is you could get parts for really old Winches. I picked up a very very (like seriously ) early Xd9000 in late 2000s for like $300. I took it apart and contacted warn and they sent me the replacement parts (I recall it was the clutch).
I'd love to see a round 2 with the best winches offered in the 12K pound class (Warn Zeon Platinum for example) just to see what you get for the extra money. As for this great test- I was most disappointed by the SmittyBuilt which requires extra setup and offers mediocre performance. I was impressed by the low amp draw and build quality of the Warn. A suggestion for next time: see if the winches are impacted when submerged in water. Crazy things happen sometimes off-roading...

He's one of the few I added to my patreon list. Just a buck goes such a long way.

Now that you've done this winch test, I think you should do a synthetic winch line test. There are so many out there for so cheap that seem like they'd break at weights way lower than what they're rated for. Synthetic winch lines are so much safer than cable, and are becoming really popular.

This was incredible. The effort and work you put into this is obvious and not taken for granted. Thanks again, Todd.

Same here I love to see how much a difference in price makes for each tool, also with this info we can learn more $$ doesn't = a better product always.
Same here for majority of products tested.
But curious about monetization.

i agree on the amount of work....but ya gotta admit, its good work if you can get it!
Um …dude this guy started small. So yea. He MADE his own work.
One of the most critical tests of a winch is whether it survives working under water. Recovering your vehicle from a mud/water hole is a huge reason why we purchase a winch. My last purchase was based on an old winch shootout from Petersen’s off road magazine; it’s worth a google and read!
Thanks for sharing.
yeah when i sank my for 92 f150 i was glad when my badland still worked under water got me out and then we had a bad flood i was out pulling cars out and other things for 3 days for 300 bucks i was impressed with it
I've heard that there is a huge strength difference between low end and name brand synthetic rope.
Test the bleepinjeep synthetic rope
This test was great! I would love to see you do this test again in the future, but strictly with synthetic line. Throw in a few real world scenarios like a stuck truck or winching over an obstacle. Some brands to add to the list would be Comeup, and Harbor Freight's Badland 12K Apex winch.
Thanks!

If you're going to test the Badland against the upper end Warn and Super Winch you have to use the Apex Badland. That is the one Harbor Freight considered comparable to Warn.

When Warn was made in the US, they were tops in consumer products but Ramsey's US made commercial products were better. Milemarker's hydraulic products were great but expensive and complex to install on a vehicle. MMs electrics were subpar at that time.

Heck ya! I have been waiting for a winch test!!!! Seems like the Zeak, with a quality dynema rope as backup, a couple snatch blocks and a couple winch covers still puts me way under the price of a Warn (which is the one I was looking at). I know this community really appreciates all you do.
What are snatch blocks?
Bring on round 2! Seriously, I love this channel, and truly admire your ethics and thorough testing!
Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion.
A lot of folks in my 4x4 club run winches and this topic comes up often. It will be nice to have this video to share when it comes time. I think testing duty cycle is also important to see how the winches will perform under long hauls. Thanks for another great video.

For what it’s worth. Saber Off Road are obsessed with bench testing their recovery gear (including winch rope) should you need a replacement. I’ve got no $take in the company although they are local to me.
A wire rope on a crane is usually 3x it's rating and an elevator's is 10x. These were < their advertised rating.

The VR series and handheld warns are made in China. The rest of warn work lines are made in the USA
I've been very happy with my 5K lb harbor freight winch. I use it to pull cars up onto a car trailer, works great.
Good to hear!
Curious which one as there are a couple. Father's day is coming. This would be an awesome gift for muh Dad!!!
You left out RFI.
Me too! Also led yellow fog lights.
You are welcome! Thanks for the suggestion.
This, I would really like to see this.
a popular amazon brand is mictuning. Would love to see the comparisons!
I wonder if the Badlands may have faired better if the mounting plate didn't buckle. That had to cause problems for the winch.
Your videos are the gold standard. Other content creators should follow your style.
Thank you!
I love that you do these videos! Especially how you come up with tests to put the products head to head! At least with the winches it seems like there should be a longevity test. You’d expect a new winch could get you out of a jam. But what you really need is a reliable winch time after time. When you need it most!
Thank you!
Unfortunately it's hard to do such a test, especially keeping the conditions consistent
It'd be interesting to see if they'll cover it under warranty since you technically didn't exceed the rating on the box. When I buy tools, I like to have confidence that the brand will honor their warranty, but this often isn't the case anymore.
That would indeed be very interesting to know how they respond (without knowing it's a famous youtuber but just a joe average)
What winch? He didn't test according to the warranties.
Thank you for the video idea!
Seems that Zeak winches aren't sold anymore. Thanks for the review, it's a great channel.
Thanks and you are welcome!
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for the suggestions.
@@ProjectFarm long term durability (hundreds of cycles) would be a great data point too.
Thanks!
Good video, but I would like to see a video comparing synthetic rope to steel and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Thanks for the video idea.
Good idéa. I have used both under pretty severe conditions. The synthetic is easier to handle and better for "normal" use. You have to replace it more often than a vire rope. If you do more extreme recovery at max load or are using snatch blocks, the wire rope is the best option.
If you are going to actually work it go with steel wire cable. Synthetic rope won't even hold up to ana 100 pound ATV snow plow, breaks very easily.
@@jasonvsd lol
Awesome video! I can't believe some of the $600 don't include wireless remotes haha! This is an excellent comparison with tons of accurate data. Couldn't believe the Smittybuilt didn't come pre assembled and it's $700+ hahaha BTW I loved the safety weights. Very smart and safe!!!
Thanks!
Project Farm IS the best channel on RUclips! You sure picked a great thumbnail. You never disappoint!
Wow, thanks!
I would love some details on how you made the winch mount that didn't fail. Metal thickness, size, etc.
A very time consuming and expensive test, but this is going to save winch buyers a lot of headaches. There's a reason why all the other RUclipsrs also love your channel. Every now and then I see you get a shout-out while I'm watching other content and it's because they respect the effort, as do we all! All the best!
Thanks!
As always, your tests never disappoint. Thanks for providing fair information & quality entertainment!
Thank you!
I really think you should test surge protectors as well. There are all different types so it would be a great category to do.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Excellent test. It is a real shame, those mounting brackets are as light as they are and not heavy duty, which also leads to twisting of the winch. Thank you for this honest and well thought out review.
Thanks and you are welcome!
I've had my Zeak on the front of my Yota for about 1.5years now. One, I didnt expect too see it in this test, and two I didnt expect it to actually perform but its been a great winch. I dont use it a ton but it does come in handy, and the rope and wireless remote out of the box is a nice feature.
Thanks for sharing.
It's the actual time PF puts in for these types of tests that are extremely underappreciated.
As much as we look forward to the next video, I think the time he puts into it is really appreciated. He found his niche and is now the golden standard when I go to the store.
You know he makes money from this, right? It's a very popular channel, has great engagement, and produces timeless content which makes for an amazing RUclips/patreon income. This isnt done out of the goodness of his heart. It's don't because it pays, really well.
@@InchFab At one time it didn’t always pay him well. That was from the goodness of his heart and I believe he just does even better comparisons now that he can buy more options to compare.
@@InchFab don`t undermine Todd. He is the real deal and is very translucent.
@@InchFab why don’t you start your own review channel? Split the earnings between the two of you. Maybe you can prove it’s from your good heart, and not for profit, and everyone will flock to your channel, and leave PF. Good luck!
Wow Ozzie, is a winch left out there that's made in America? 🇺🇸🙂 I may have missed something but as far as durability, none of them really topped off at there "supposedly" peak performance, BUT, you still are the top dog review testing channel on RUclips hands down!!! Thank you for all you do my friend!!! Jay👍👍
I'm pretty sure Ramsey is still made in America. Hope this helps
Ramsey is made in China or most of their products are. The best on the market is Sherpa winches, made in Australia and used exclusively in the Dakkar Rally. Steel case, all hardened steel gears, there is no comparison currently.
You are welcome!
@@TheRoadhammer379 thanks for the information, I have one rig that has a winch that absolutely positively must work every time no messing around. Ill look into seeing if I can get them in the states.
As usual, a very informative and entertaining video! I like it that you included the link to the BAD winch mount to directly help the viewers save money. Watch out for Cousin Eddie's revenge on breaking the Farmabago's bumper! He will get you back when you least expect it! He looks like he can deliver a mighty Karate chop!
Thanks! lol
(Always love the Farmabago content lol)
Ideas for round 2, upgraded/thicker wiring, and a stronger bigger diameter synthetic rope. And of course the Apex brand winch, along with the pricey Warn Zeon.

Thank you for the video idea!
Now I know!
Did you have rope breaks?
Couldn’t have come at a better time. I love how I learn about these brands that are so obscure but good quality. All your videos seem like you're having a blast. Keep it up.
Thanks, will do!
Another great video. It would have been nice to see the Badland Apex 12,000 pound winch tested. This is a very popular model. It's very similar in design to SuperWinch and may be manufactured in the same factory. A synthetic versus steel winch line test would be great as well. Keep up the awesome work.
Just used my badlands 9500 the other day. Got me out of a very stick situation and did not have any issues. Great video! I live your content!
Thanks! Glad to hear!
One of the greatest channels on youtube.
Thank you very much!
Another well made test! I would love to also see a video comparing wire strippers… I have seen all the hand tool videos you have made and it as an electrician is like to see your opinion on wire strippers as well
Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you for the video idea!
Most current DI engines also have port injection. It cleans the intake/valves and increases torque.
@@nucleargrizzly1776 'most' is true, but there are still some that stick to only direct, which is a problem and requires more maintenance than people realize
You practically have to remove and disassemble the entire engine and toss it into the ultrasonic cleaner to get the job done these days
Thanks for the suggestion.
The on thing Warn had as an advantage when they were still being built in the US is you could get parts for really old Winches. I picked up a very very (like seriously ) early Xd9000 in late 2000s for like $300. I took it apart and contacted warn and they sent me the replacement parts (I recall it was the clutch).
only the evo series winches are made in china their higher priced ones are made in the usa still
I've been waiting for a video like this one for awhile now. Awesome 👌
Thank you!!
Everyone knows Smittybilt = Shittybuilt
Love to see a test on using a smaller winch. Also fiery red brand.
Great video! Very Helpful! I'll probably go get a Zeak and a spare synthetic rope, just in case. Thanks again!
Our pleasure!
