As anyone who knows Cindy and I well, you know that the we love to run our Jeeps doorless and topless and for the times when we have to run a top, we prefer a soft top. Unfortunately, even with a soft top on, there's little to nothing that would prevent a would be thief from taking whatever he wants from the inside our Jeep and it's for this reason that we've always installed a Tuffy Security Deck Enclosure or at least, in all our JK's. Of course, even with a hard top on, having a deck like this provides the added benefit of making it easier to pack, stack and organize all our gear. Needless to say, adding a Tuffy Deck on our brand new, Jeep JL Wrangler was high on our to do list and in this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see just how easy it is to install.
TUFF Security Deck Enclosure Highlights:
• Made out of welded, 16-gauge steel and is covered with a durable textured powder coat finish.
• Offers over 20,000 cubic inches of secure storage when the JL tailgate is closed and locked.
• Does not rely on the wheel well to create an enclosed space adding an additional level of security.
• The deck and rear panel can be opened up and propped up with ease and without the use of tools.
• The rear panel can also be removed with ease and without the use of tools.
NOTE: Tuffy makes 2 different Security Deck Enclosures for the JL Wrangler, a standard one and one for a JL equipped with the Alpine subwoofer. It is important for you to order the correct one for your JL.

Love the video. Clear, concise, no fluff, just right to the install. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Love your videos. No hr of BS just to the point and clear video and audio. Keep it up. Awesome job and thanks. Jonzee
Glad you like them!
Have had a tuffy security lid in my jk for about 3 years. After that, I have come across issues that I found. Love the product, will not lie, I drilled some holes and mounted some I bolts to use to tie my cooler or supplies down. Now the issues is the sides, is a rectangle that sits between the wheel wells. A lot of dead space it creates on the sides. I felt like they should of put some extra metal to cover the wells so you could set stuff on top. Like alittle pocket. Second was the lid, it looks like for the JL they added a brace to hold it up. That’s what the jk needed, overall. I’d recommend this thing to anyone. I had mine in a 2 door. Removed my seat, and worked perfect. Had enough room in the middle, had a some camping gear mounted up to that portion.
Nice product Eddie, thanks for the install walk through. I loved the look when you had to make an unexpected trip to the hardware store and how the roar of the Jeep engine made up for the disappointment that was lingering in the air.
LOL - it sure is nice to have a Jeep like Moby around. 6.2L V8 is hard not to love. :)
@@truedeadman Yup, sure is :)
The video I wanna see is your trail tool bag set up. You always have the right part, tool, fluid etc. I’m currently trying to creatively create storage in my tj. I am trying to keep everything organized neatly
LOL! I'll have to see what I can do.
Ordered this! Thanks for the install video. Shipping is a little behind, but hopefully i'll have it by the end of the summer. I run a hard top, but this will give me piece of mind when travelling with a lot of camera gear and laptops / hard drives.
Hope you enjoy it!
I just wanted to wish you and cindy a vary merry Christmas and happy wheeling
Why thank you! We wish you a very Merry Christmas as well :)
Thanks for another great Jeep video.
You bet
Nice as always on point with installing a product! Keep up great work!
Appreciate it!
Thx Eddie, I'm installing mine on my JK tomorrow so I can take the doors off 😃👩🔧
Good luck!
Looks great! Didn’t know it was so easy to install or remove
Glad we could share this with you :)
Great video! Have one in my JK and love it. I put gear on top of it while wheeling which worked great, however scratched the finish up quite a bit. Just had it bed lined, so ready for next summer with an even better finish!
Tuffy sells a vinyl mat that you can apply to the deck but bedlining it sounds like a great idea too.
Definitely on the mod list for my JL 🇺🇸
Loving the white JL JEEP it has become my new favorite color oh well maybe my next one
Totally getting one of these. Wish they had them out last summer!
Definitely a nice mod for sure.
@@wayalife I was hoping/waiting for Aries to come out with one, but I may just go with Tuffy. Probably will wait for warmer weather. Maybe they'll work out their problem with not sending all the hardware by then. :) :) Thanks for the review/install vid!!
Merci pour cette vidéo qui nous éclair sur les nouveautés. Stéphane
Thank you for being so thorough my wife is actually coming around to maybe letting me upgrade my TJ! Waiting on that diesel option though fingers crossed!
I assume you meant to the JT as in, Jeep Truck but regardless, I'm glad that we could be of help to you :)
@@wayalife actually I really want a JL Rubicon with the diesel the JT although cool is just odd to me just got the wife an 18 F150 so no need for another bed! I know they keep hinting then going back but im keeping the faith and hope that the diesel will pop next year for the JL! Then let the fun begin! keep up the great work and content!
LOL - got it. Not sure what your reasons are for wanting a diesel but they will cost a lot more.
Wayalife sucker for diesels and the numbers look awesome as far as mileage and power. I’d like to be able to tow a couple different trailers and eventually after I heal from selling my kidney!! I’d like to get an overland set up!
I’ve been meaning to install one of these in the JK but haven’t gotten around to it. May have to revisit it before the new season gets under way.
If you run around doorless and topless like we prefer to most of the year, it's pretty much a must have mod. :)
Nice job. Also, I did get my CB bar and CB installed and it looks and works great. I did add my ham radio remote face and mini speaker to it as well. Even the guy at the CB shop liked the bar. Maybe get you some business?
You and Cindy have a Merry Christmas!
Awesome! So glad to hear you bought one of our CB BARS and are really happy with it :)
I dig everything about it, just wish they had tie down points along the top for gear
Those are sold as an option.
With the back plate in place, could probably build a small storage shelf between the rear seat and back plate too. Cool.
Great video, as always...
I've got a Cal-Ranch a few minutes from my house as well and can attest to the hardware selection.
LOL - They sure are super handy to have near by :)
What a tough decision what jeep to drive to the hardware store.
LOL
That’s awesome! Great addition
It really is handy to have :)
Doesn’t look like someone could just smash it with a hammer
Great video Quick question Any issues when you let soft top down Your videos are always a big help
The top will not sit as low with it on but it can still be lowered.
Is there enough room to slide a cooler under the deck? Or what are the dimensions of interior space?
16.5 inches of height. There should absolutely be enough space.
how bad does it drown out the sub? and does the sub make it vibrate badly?
Honestly, if there is any reduction in sound from the sub, I can't hear it. As far as vibrations go, we don't have any.
That was my question, I’m glad you asked it. Each video I watch I get closer on my decision. But do I wait for the Gladiator?? Decisions 🤔
Both my wife and I have those in both of our JKs.
Dam that is sick, hope to have a jl on my jeep channel one day. Love watching your videos 🤙🤙
I found that the True Value Hardware store up in Moundhouse has the best selection of nuts & bolts, it's only a couple of miles further than Cal-Ranch from your place. Tractor Supply is my 3rd choice in the Carson area.
Thanks for the tip! I'll have to give them a look the next time I need some specialty hardware.
Great video I just ordered one from tuffy waiting on it to ship also will you be doing an install in the evo tire carrier?
Yes, it's in the line up of videos we have coming your way.
That's great news to hear. I have a Mopar tire carrier still in the box. Planning on returning this mod in favor of EVO's brand. Although both tire carriers serve the same purpose, the Evo brand is definitely much more stylish.
Nice and simple 👍👍👍well worth it
Yup, we like ours a lot :)
Love this!
Awesome addition! I'm hoping for a security deck for my 2 door JL to become available (currently non available)!
Actually, if you remove the rear seat, I'm pretty sure you can still use this deck.
@@wayalife Thanks for the advice! I plan to keep my rear seats in place though, but I'll keep that in mind.
@@wayalife how sure? I plan on removing my back seat anyways. But rather not hope it fits
@@aaronh6489 Well, if you go to their website, it states this can be used for both a 2-door and a 4-door. I might talk to Tuffy to verify.
That looks really sharp which it was a bit stronger to put stuff on top
Who's doing QA on the packing at Tuffy? Pretty simple check for them - does it have new screws in the box or not. Too bad you had to make a trip. Great vid.
It was kind of a bummer for sure but overall, I'm happy with what I got.
Made a smaller one plus a locking console in a two door jeep 30 years ago.
Seems easy to install. Might need one myself.
Yup, super easy :)
Now that's a beautiful gadget I need for my future Rubicon at least I know what I'm dealing with now
thanks for the reply and the information!
You make any install or maintainence job look super easy, thank you! Really gives me the confidence to do some things on my own!
About the tuffy box, can you put the softtop down all the way with the box top on? Looks flush with the tailgate so not sure where the soft top would go.
Hmmm, I don't ever recall my soft top ever sitting below the tailgate when folded down. With the Tuffy deck, it pretty much sets the same way as I remember seeing it before. At least, from what I remember.
@@wayalife I could be making it up! Haven't had the soft top down in a few months. If yours comes down fine thats good enough for me. Thanks
@@wayalife does it go all the way down that you can enable the locks on your soft top? I heard it doesn't so I'm still on the fence about this product.
I was looking into getting this exact kit for the back of my JL... I do have the Alpine system installed as well, but I'm curious, how obnoxious sounding is the sub being enclosed like that?
Honestly, I can't say I that I can even tell the deck is there.
Sir you have walked me thru several installs, another awesome install video! Just curious, do you know how much the Tuffy system weighs?
I am sorry but I don't know for sure. Maybe 40 lbs or so.
I have a security deck in mine as well but don't know the brand. It has some soft coating on top so my tools won't slide.
Eddie are you planning on making a vid of the JL repairs? I'd love to see how you address them and maybe costs!? Nice vids as always man!
The only real damage that we suffered from the JLX was to the pinch seams on the corners and we already had our body shop repair them. Cost wasn't too bad - about $650.
that satisfying staple popping edit #drool
Another great video!
Are you getting any rattling from all those metal panels?
Nope. Tuffy did a good job of making it work rattle free.
I painted the bottom of the lid and the inside of the back panel white. Tied a LED strip to the interior lights and I can see the contents at night
Good idea
...as an added bonus, on hot days of topless desert crawling you can bake a pizza in the back!!!
LOL - this is true.
Hahahaha, you had that look that says, "I'm not mad Tuffy, I'm just disappointed."
I wish someone would make a locking mechanism for the rear seat release. That would eliminate the need for the forward wall and allow for a pass through. While they're at it, replace those wimpy release levers that break way to easily.
LOL - I think you got that spot on! As far as the release levers go, man, you're telling me.
@@wayalife , yea it's amazing I haven't broken mine yet. I think they're made of balsa.
is there a separate lock for the tailgate? Otherwise it seems someone could just hit the unlock button?
The unlock buttons are on the doors. When you're running topless, there are no buttons to unlock the tailgate. With the doors on, a thief would still need to get inside your Jeep and hopefully, that would set off the alarm. Either way, the deck for me isn't meant to serve as a safe, just something to help make it harder for thieves to just grab my stuff and go.
@Steve Janney Just wanted to post an update to this and let you know that if you lock your doors with the key FOB, you CANNOT unlock the doors without it - NONE of the doors. I just verified it.
Very nice job thank you for video ,just wondering how is gonna be when you fold the soft top back ? Is it gonna be any issue ?
The deck will prevent you from completely folding down the top.
just got one for my jku hope its as easy as this looked
I know they've changed the design a bit on the JK since I got mine way back in the day but it is my understanding that it is just as easy.
@@wayalife hey i forget but i thought on moby you had the evo trail table does that fit with the Tuffy Security Deck?
Hi Eddie, thanks for great content... Huge fan of your channel 😉
A question to you as master of Jeep, do you think I will be able to store under this Toffy Dometic CFX3 45 fridge with his slider and close the storage?
If not any options to add spacer to increase the high of this storage?
I have JL without subwoofer of alpine.
Hard to say for sure without measuring everything but if I could guess, no. At least, not with the sliders installed.
@@wayalife thanks, so it looks like we need to find workaround :-)
Outstanding job thanks
Just got my 2019 JLU Rubicon with the rear cargo management track system on cargo floor and rear vertical door. Is this compatible with that factory option it came with? Specifically the floor bolts you had to go to store for? Let me know if you need pics.
With this installed can you still lower the soft top all the way back? Oh lover your videos by the way. New to the Jeep life and you have help me out a few times, Thanks
I don't think it'll go completely flat.
Looks great Eddie. How will do those decisions keep dust out?
Decisions?
@@wayalife ok apparently I didn't proof read before posting. Plus I was half asleep. Let me try again. How well do those decks keep dust out?
LOL - ah, thanks for the clarification. Not sure even my hard top does a great job of keeping dust out of my Jeep. My soft top is even worse. The deck has seals around it but it also has gaps between the sides and the tailgate where dust can come in.
Great video, thank you!
Glad you found it to be helpful.
I know this is a year old but I have a question for you Eddie or anyone else that has one. I have an ARB compressor and bracket right behind the rear drivers side seat. My question is do you think that gap everyone is complaining about is enough to clear the compressor?
Would love to see the 2 door application
A great idea!
Love your videos man! I was wondering if you think an arb fridge on a fridge slide would fit underneath? Also, is there a way to put some tie down tracks on the top of the lid for other gear?
Unfortunately, no, it will not fit. I have even have a small ARB and it won't fit underneath. As far as tie down track go, yes, Tuffy even sells some.
Any ideas to protect the top and give it an anti slip texture for my dog to stay on while providing protection from groceries etc? I also wonder how bad the hair will collect near the edges but that is another issue.. I currently have the rear seat removed in my 2 door and a pet liner in back that works fairly well. I am considering this cool tuffy product as an option
If you're talking about on top of the deck, I've applied a vinyl mat to one that I've had in a previous Jeep and used a strong 3M adhesive spray to hold it in place. On another Jeep, I've used a spray or roll on bedliner to do the same.
Wayalife thanks!
I called Tuffy and they said that the security deck IS compatible with the Trail Rail System. However, the deck needs to be secured to middle bolt by being put ON TOP of the trail rail. My question: do you still need to use the spacer or do we just need to buy an even longer bolt?
Good question. I would imagine you would just need a longer bolt.
I really enjoy your install videos. Keep them coming!!
Do you think there will still be enough space to install a twin Arb compressor using the M.O.R.E mount?
BTW what do you use to air up?
Any information will be helpful. Thank’s in advance.
Sorry, not sure I'd know the answer to that being that I don't have either. For now, I've been using a cheap Smitybilt compressor to air up.
I have this and the more mount. Works fine. You will need a 90 degree NPT elbow for the hose connection
Question. Will this work with a goose gear (60%) floor panel? Thanks.
2yrs later, how have you liked it? I'm looking to get it but wondered what removal time is like if need to haul something where need to fold back seats.
I like it a lot as it does a great job of protecting my gear when I'm running a soft top or no top. You can leave the side panels in place and the top and back come out pretty quick for bigger hauls.
@@wayalife thanks. Just pulled top/doors and ppl have sticky fingers where I live. 1st yr as Jeep owner next month. Love ur channel & forums
once its installed, will you be able to put anything on top of it?? if so, how many pounds of stuff where it won't bend the top cover??
Yes, you can. Not sure about the weight capacity though. Sorry.
How much weight can you put on the top of the security deck? P.S. Bought the CB bar from you and it works a treat here in Australia! :)
If someone breaks into your Jeep, they can just unlock the doors and get access to your tailgate, correct? Not much security when you have a soft top??
LOL!! Try it. Roll down your window, lock your doors with the key FOB, place it away from your Jeep, reach inside and then try unlocking your doors. Tell me what happens.
I wonder about all the added accessories we add that have some weight to them, How is this effecting the motor? Or does the added horsepower with the catback exhaust and open intake make up for the weight we’re adding?
Doesn't affect it much if at all. Running bigger tires will and nothing short of installing new gears with a higher ratio will help out.
Wayalife thanks . Your channel is great.
I need one for my 2012 jkur,i carry slot of stuff in back, with my hardtop I'm not usually worried but when top is off I always worry,is there a weight capacity on the top lid to stack stuff on
definitely a mod to add to my list of mods for my future JL. Where are you guys located by the way?
We are in Carson City, NV.
I have a dual top. I wonder if I am running with the hardtop on but take the Freedom Panels off, would they fit in that when stored in the Mopar Storage bag?
I suppose it depends on how you store them.
Hi Eddie.. About to get the Tuffy Security Lid. I have 2 questions. 1. Are you able to lock the soft top when it's folded? 2. Do you have a discount code for this?
Sorry, don't have a discount code and no, I don't think the soft top will lock in place with it folded down.
Looks like a nice product. Any suggestions on something that would work in a JKU with a rear seat recline kit installed?
Tuffy makes a deck for the JK as well and there's a bit of room between it and the rear seat. Depending on how much of a recline you've installed, you should be able to still run it.
@@wayalife I've looked into that, but Tuffy replied that it's not designed to work with recline kits, so I don't want to risk buying something that won't fit and don't want to remove my recline kit. I didn't measure, but I'm guessing the back of my seat it around 2" farther back than stock at the top of the bed level.
Alright bro stupid question maybe. If someone is breaking in to your junk anyway what is to keep them from hitting the unlock and opening the tailgate?
Not a stupid question but one that I have answered dozens of times already. So long as you make sure to lock your doors with your key FOB, you cannot simply reach in and hit the unlock button. Try it.
I just have a question. I have a 2016 2 dr with a hardtop and was wondering are the hardtops and softops interchangeable, can you put a soft top on a jeep that was manufactured with a hardtop???
Yes, you sure can.
any suggestion for 2 door with functional rear seats ?
As of 10/23/2020 they still haven't included two longer floor mount bolts, so its over to the Cal ranch store in metric bin 103 and just a bit longer as shown in the video.
Well that's a shame.
@@wayalife it still works with
out the spacers
I wish Tuffy would sell something like that for 2drs JL
Great video as always...
A few people on Amazon and the JL Forum have complained about the soft top not being able to be locked into its open folded position once the Tuffy was installed. Have you had a chance to try it with the roof folded back?? Thanks in advance!!!
Sorry, we never fold our soft top down. Hate the way it looks and so we just remove it altogether.
I have this box and the soft top will not lock down. I also agree that the top looks awkward down because of the hinges on the roll cage but in the south you never know when it will rain sooooo
So what do you do??...not lock the top down or just not use the soft top like Eddie?@@xsgo567
You know the 2 tie downs that you take off to install the box, well I mounted those on the front of the lid (in the angled portion above where the gasket touches the door). I bungee cord around the top on each side and connect them there.
I have seen reviews saying that since the rollers on the lid are exposed someone could just unscrew them and lift the lid off... is this the case?
Clearly the review you have seen don't actually own the deck and have been left to speculate on how it actually works. I would like for one of them to remove the bolts in question and show exactly how the lid would come off when the tailgate is closed and locked.
If you where to load something big in the back to where you would have to fold down the seats. Do you need to remove the deck?
The back panel can be removed as well as the deck itself if needed and it only takes seconds to do.
Hi Eddie, are you able to put the soft top all the way down without the security lid interfering?
Honestly, I don't know for sure being that I never just fold down my soft top. I can't see why you wouldn't be able to fold down your top though. How tiddy it'll be once down is what I don't know for sure. Sorry.
How much heat does it attract in the summer? Hope it doesnt make it an oven inside?
I can get warm inside but nothing too crazy. At least, not in my opinion.
Can you tell me how is it secure if someone can just reach in and unlock the door on the door switch and open the tailgate? Is there a trick or way to prevent this?
As I've mentioned multiple times now, try it. Lock your doors with your key FOB, put it inside your house, go back outside and try to do what you just described. You can't.
Loving your JL! I follow you guys and watch a lot of your videos. I am a new firecracker red JL owner and want to install one of these. My only concern is if someone got into the car and unlocked the doors, they can technically open the rear door and have access to whatever is in the Tuffy deck, right?
We typically run doorless when we're running topless. The door lock buttons are on the doors and without them, there are no buttons to press unlock. Even with the doors on, a would be thief would have to open the doors or climb into the front seats to press said buttons and I would hope that would trigger the alarm. For me, the deck is not intended to be a safe but rather, just make it a lot harder for a would be thief to reach in, grab my stuff and go. In other words, it's just a deterrent.
@@wayalife Thanks for the reply! I'll be looking into one of these in the near future. Currently running a GCPA cargo cover just to keep things hidden in the back.
@Justin Yeung Just wanted to post an update to this and let you know that if you lock your doors with the key FOB, you CANNOT unlock the doors without it - NONE of the doors.
@@wayalifeWayalife this is only for a JL?
@@HeyKMO They make one for the JK and even TJ. They're just a bit different.
Are you getting much vibration or noise on the road? Or rattle due to the subwoofer being inside the box?
Nope. I can't say that we are.
Thanks for the Video, have you tried to access with the soft top down? And you open the lid or does the soft top down pretty much make it to difficult.
Sorry, I typically remove my top or leave it up. I have not tried working with this deck with the top down.
Thanks, I found another review and found out this is not accessible when the soft top is down. Lol when you need it most. Unfortunately they said you cannot even lock the top down. Bummer I was going to buy one, but do to the poor design when the soft top is down but not off I will not.
@@Travcity1 The two nylon straps with Velcro that came with my JL work just fine to hold my soft top down with the Tuffy box. I strap the top frame to the roll bars when my top is down. Never an issue even at 80 mph on the interstate or slow on the trails
if someone gets in from top cant they just unlock the back door?
Green Rush try it. Lock your doors with the key FOB and then try to unlock the them without it. You can’t.
I was going to ask the same question and decided to search the 299 comments first 😅
How does this metal box vibrate with the sub. What happened to the sound quality . How much rattle is there from the vibrations of metal on metal with a 12in sub firing right there?
I don't hear or feel any vibrations with this deck. Sound quality seems to be the same to me.
Would there be a way to reuses the cargo tie downs to secure the “L” brackets?
I don't think so but with some washers, maybe.
Great video thanks. Any thoughts between this model and the Slipstream? I know the Slipstream costs quite a bit more. The flat top also covers the sides all the way around the sport bar. Thanks.
LOL - If I thought the Slipstream was better, I would have bought one.
Wayalife Lol. I should have know better. Looks like this in is in order to order!! Love all the great info you provide. My wife and I are waiting on our first Wrangler. Our ‘19 Rubicon was built last week and just awaiting delivery. Been watching your channel ever since you first brought your ‘18 home. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you guys!!
@@stevehorvat69 Merry Christmas to you and yours and hope you have a very Happy New Year as well :)
I have added a rear seat recliner to my JL , do I still have enough space to install this kit ?
Sorry, I wouldn't know being that I have not installed a recliner.
If you have a JLU with a Cargo Management System, do you think it will still boot to the floor? I don’t have the loops.
Yes
Late to the party! But had a question...at the 7:46 mark on your video...what is the "Jeep" domed structure on top of your dashboard?
And thanks for the video, think I may just grab one of these deck enclosures.
LOL - Moby, is a 2007 Jeep JK Wrangler and back then, GPS was still kind of a newish thing. Jeep's solution for on on-board GPS system was to make a docking station for a removable Garmin GPS device. At them time, it was a pretty neat system being that it would charge when docked, would give audio turn by turn directions and was small enough that you could remove it and take on a hike with you.
@@wayalife Aha! Gotcha and that actually does sound like a neat dual system, even for these days. Thanks for the reply!
Wonder how much rattling you get when you turn up the bass on your stereo?
I dunno, don't have any rattling with mine.
Couldn’t remember or not if you mentioned how much space “height”?
Great video .
Is there a model for the 2 door JL ?
I am sorry but I don't really know as I haven't needed to look. I do know they made one for the JK and TJ before though so I would think they do.
No problem thank you very much Sir.
In many respects the 2 door lives in the shadow of its bigger unlimited brother .
