Only two places are the most dangerous with radioactivity. The cellar which stored first responders clothing, and the reactor itself. No one is allowed near the reactor, and being inside for longer than 5-10 minutes could kill you. The first responders clothing is deadly as well if touched.

This is so sad. Imagine all the families confused and scared and evacuating and not taking things thinking they would be okay soon and be able to go back but they couldn’t and many of them die. It’s crazy how people are still dying from it brought down in generations.
My Grandma lived in Chernobyl before the accident, she tell me story in her hospital before she died.

Sad thing is Jessica, they were told all would be okay and they would be back in a few days. To live in such a regime as they did then was something us in the west find hard to understand and to be brought up in such a regime meant you thought nothing of listening to the orders or you would end up in the Gulag. ArcusCo there is very little that could actually protect you. Breathing equipment only really protects against radioactive dust which has mostly settled. The rest is just in the air and dirt and it’s nearly impossible to guard against

3.5 microsievert/hr is pretty low. If you camp there for 1 day its still slightly less than a chestxray. Normal background radiation is about 0.5 microsievert/hr. So hardly significant.

CaptainCupcake XD: Radiation levels have decreased quite a bit since 1986, especially considering the half life of some of the radioactive isotopes expelled from the reactor, are only 30 years. Radiation will continue to linger around for 20,000 years, but there are places in the Zone where it is relatively safe to be around, as long as you don't spend dozens of hours in there, or get too close to the reactor ruins, or else things might get serious fast.

My mother in Sweden was out jogging when the clouds from Chernobyl reached over here and started raining on her. I don't know what type of sickness you can get from these types of accidents but so far she and three of her children including me are all healthy.

Chernobyl is still currently inhabitable for over 20 thousand years its still way too radioactive it was once beautiful but now just visitng exposes you to the extremely still radioactive air and well everything or puts to still at extreme risk.

Personally I think it shouldnt be a tourist area considering people have died horrible deaths. It should be more of a learning area. To teach what happened regarding the events that happened.

Also there is still lots of radiation contamination from it, even in current cities around Chernobyl .. After monitoring the ground contamination for a decade or so, the government came around and took all the monitoring equipment away and said, "no more contamination!" Which of course is a lie. Farmers give their livestock iodinized salt to combat goiters from the fall out.
Candice Cart I watched a video about this and it said the workers wanted to know if it would run on30% but one of the workers forgot to do something which caused the machine to go to 1%. Then an alarm went of and the fire department came. The video had footage of the firefighters carrying people out of the building and then the firefighters started to collapse from probably get radiation in their system
