- Ikeshima or Ikejima (Japanese: 池島), also sometimes listed as Ike Island, is an island in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Initially within the borders of Kamiura village, from 1955 until its merger with the city of Nagasaki in 2005, it was part of Sotome municipality.
Thousands of coal miners who lived on the island were formerly employed there, representing the vast majority of its population. The coal mines opened in 1959 and closed in 2001. after 2001 everyone who lived on the island also moved out leaving everything behind..

YES!! Please save all the cats!! People brought them there and now are just leaving them to die a slow death. You can tell they are not being fed just by when you all showed up how they ran to you crying.

I just watched this amazing video and I enjoyed everything. My favorite parts were the cats greeting in main street and what really got me was the mother in the box with kittens. I really hope that they were rescued.
I CRIED! Normally I get emotional because of what was left behind but it’s the cats, Josh, the cats 😢

This was awesome. Except the poor kitties. I would have definitely taken the mom and her babies back to the mainland with me. Someone would have taken them and nursed them for rescue. So so sad. Cats are my favorite animal. I’d have 100 if I could. Regardless, great explore!!

Hey Josh not sure if it's something you can do but is there any chance there's a local rehab shelter for those poor kitties? Maybe if a rescue organization knew about them they could be helped?

I wish they could all be rescued but unfortunately I'm just not sure the resources are there with the few people that are left and it being an island I'm not sure its very accessible for any rescue groups to come in to help them poor babies😢 I could be very wrong though. The cats! 😭💔 Please, please tell me someone called a rescue to come help as many of those cats as possible. They deserve a fighting chance. Maybe the mama & kittens can find their way to the working part of the hospital. 😿
Did the mother cat and her kittens get rescued 😢. I felt so sad for her, and all the other stray cats left to fend for themselves 😢😢

I am currently on Teshima island, restoring abandoned Japanese gardens. Population of the island has dropped from 10,000 to 600. It is such a shame that the young Japanese don’t care about island life. They want the excitement of the big cities.
Is there a way you could raise awareness and show the beauties of the island via internet? it might tempt people to move in!

Hey Josh, you’ll be alright. You were talking about Final Destination. I know what you mean. I had some real life experiences that had me feeling as though it was hunting me, like something was walking on my grave. Seriously I had escaped death a few times in my life and a couple times were twice in one day. I had experienced some over all general anxiety, I absolutely hate those feelings, as a result of my experiences, and then I made the mistake of seeing that show. Slick move heh? Yeah, that damned movie got to me for a grip too.
One way to rid those feelings is to do something for other living being and that is what you will be doing by contacting a no kill shelter. You guys are good men. Thank you.

Hey Josh, seeing all of those stray cats breaks my heart. I'm currently feeding some strays around my home. I wish I could take all of them, but I just can't afford to right now. 😿
The sad thing is the shelters, pounds and rescues in the U.S. are all over capacity right now. I think it's because of Covid. If you (anyone) can rescue, foster or adopt just even one dog, cat, rabbit, horse, ect you would be helping out.

What a fascinating place! Sad about the wee cats though, I hope they get rescued. The building which was almost completely coverered by nature was cool to see.

Few abandoned places make me feel so sad to see abandoned. This one seems like such a shame to me though. The idea of this cool looking island just being mostly left to rot is a little more sad to me than usual.

I’m confused by this. You said that it closed down in 2001 but i was reading about it and it says this “ Mitsubishi officially closed the mine in January 1974, and the island was cleared of inhabitants on 20 April.” But i clearly see proof of people there in the early 2000s. Can someone clarify this for me? Thank you

Just to help calm you Josh about the Cat and her kittens in the box in the hospital, she may have had her kittens elsewhere and moved them there to keep her babies safe from predators, mother cats are practically good at hiding their babies to keep them safe :) But I go agree that all the cats need to be rescued especially if they're ill :(

Cat give birth in boxes all the time. It's a closed, safe space. If you can rescue them, do it. But if not, the kittens looked old enough and they may be ok. They might be out of the danger zone! I know I'm late, and you already did or did not rescue them 😂 I love them though! ❤

In final destination, it was a fishing lure that fell in his mouth which honestly shouldn't have been up there. And he didn't choke to death on it. The assistant pulled it out just in time. The kid died when a giant pane of glass fell on him and smushed him. Kid's name was Tim.

Unfortunately feline leukemia is very real and deadly. Many stray cats end up getting the condition due to not having proper vet care and help. Whats even more sad is when mother cats have it its passed down to their kittens. Its a very contagious and kills many cats a year. At my parent's old house my mom had helped catch many of the strays that where on the street and quite often had it. There is no cure so once they have it those cats often had to be put down at the vet clinics... it happned with two kittens we caught.. we loved them so but there is no good quality of life for these cats when they have it.
That's a lot of stray cats!!! 😳😳😳😳😭
My mother actually had a drill bit fall into the back of her throat at the dentist. Josh, it happens and it’s horrible.

Unfortunately I don't think the few residents left have the money or resources to feed all those cats. I think they are just left to survive on their own.

Please get someone to rescue the mama and babies. Poor things. I have 7 cats, mostly rescued strays so seeing them was heart breaking.
I went there in october 2023, found one building with open doors and explored one flat which was opened too, but i would love to return and see more of the island
