  • This cast-on isn't ideal for the beginning of a knit project, but it's how we can add stitches in the middle of our work. It is commonly used for making buttonholes and adding stitches to the underarms in a top-down raglan sweater.

    Had this as a cast on in a new pattern, really thought it “had” to be tricky but low and behold.....this was the cast on I was taught when I first learned to knit when I was 9, yay, I now know it’s name 40 years later! Thanks, great quick/to the point video!

    I'm holding my first knit sweater since 3 weeks because I stressed about how to make a cast on. And now that I see how easy it is, I just laugh for all my fears.
    Thank you for the very quick, clear explanantion 🖤 I return to my knitting project !

    Ms Staci May I be so bold to thank you for your tutorials, tips and sound advice! Love your videos. I am now feeling more and more confident of stranded color knitting because of your tutorials and knitting companion tool. Lately I needed a backward loop casting for the thumb of my mitten. Thank you.

    The yarn is drawn over your thumb so the part attached to the needle overlaps the loose end which you're holding firm. You scoop the lower/loose end onto the needle, then let go with your thumb and pull til the loop is locked on the needle. Took me a few watches to figure this out. But thanks for the videos of course :)

    Despite saying that its not an ideal initial cast on, I prefer to use it if I am needing something with a flexible edge (such as a wrist cuff for example).

    looks like you're adding to a purl row, and adding the stitches purl-wise. I'm knitting in the round so it's all knit... does it make a difference??

  • @vickistanton9078

    Is the stitch orientation not normal with the backwards loop cast-on? My pattern says to cast on 23 backward loop method then turn and purl to marker, but the stitch orientation on the needles seems wrong on the cast on stitches. I seem to be doing the cast on correctly, should I just ignore this little issue? Help!

    hi,, i have a pattern that ask for backwards loop cast on (BLCO) at the end of the row, no problem there, but in the next row , which starts with the BLCO, it ask for KTBL, how can it be done specially in the first stitch?

  • @haleyderm
    @haleyderm 10 лет назад +1

    When doing this cast on in the middle of a row, which needle do you cast the stitches on to - left or right? If you cast onto the left needle, do you knit the new stitches in pattern afterwards?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  10 лет назад +2

      Your working yarn is in position to cast the new stitches on to the right needle. Put them on there, then continue working from the stitches on the left needle. You'll knit into them (as normal stitches) in the next round/row.

    When I use this cast-on method to join pieces in the round, the cast-on tends to stretch on my cables. When I cast the new stitches on the needle I do tighten them down completely around the needle as shown here. However, the tension in that area becomes very loose and I have to adjust to make sure there aren't ladders. The tension does get better after working a few rows, but I can feel that area is still looser than the rest of my body section. Is there a way to avoid this?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 года назад

      This CO doesn't hold tension very well. It is really only useful when your pattern calls for it, when it is necessary to CO a few (very few!) stitches in the middle of a row or round. All purpose COs that keep better tension and look better are long-tail CO and knitted CO.

      Ah, you just made me realize I haven't don't a slow-motion version of this technique yet. Thank you!

  • @cloudydaez

    This cast on does not give a very stable stitch when you go to knit them too much stretch in the yarn makes knitting those stitches very awkward. Is there another way?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  5 лет назад +1

      You are right - this is not a very stable CO, as it is really just twisted loops on the needle. It is normally only used as a "fill in" CO, not for the cast-on you do when you are starting a project. If you are looking for a good, stable CO to use when you're starting a project, I recommend long tail CO: ruclips.net/video/sN9cNEozOLc/видео.html

    To me this looks like the same exact thing you do when you're casting on your initial loops... Am I wrong here?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  7 лет назад +1

      I suppose you can start other cast ons this way, most folks start with a slip knot.

    • @babynewms
      @babynewms 5 лет назад

      You should be casting on slipknot style with 2 strands?
