Have you been practicing to small projects before you try this one? I am also a beginner and I wonder what are the other tutorials that I need to focus first to be able to make a sweater in the future.
Working on my first 'top-down' sweater, adding the underarm stitches had me stumped; your tutorial was fantastic and had me right on track in no time! Thank you!
Thank you for explaining why you’re taking the steps you are - particularly bring the yarn from the front to the back between the last two cast ons - I learn better when I understand /why/ I’m doing something, instead of following directions rote.
Thank you, for this clear, calm, easy explanation of this type of underarm cast on. I’d forgotten how to do it, and it came back so easily, because of your video!😊
Great tips! I knew there had to be another way besides backwards loops. This looks much more solid and like a natural cast on. On with my sweater I go thanks to you!
Boy, did this video save me a lot of time! I too am knitting a top down sweater for the first time, and the instructions just said to put the sleeve stitches on scrap yarn and cast on so many more stitches. I couldn’t see how you could then continue knitting in the same direction. Answer: turn the whole thing around! Thank you for such a clear video.
Triple thumbs up! Thank you so much. I'm working my first sweater successfully (four months of failure and yarn thrown in the trash) and I'm coming up on the top down sleeve on hold cast on part. I was getting anxious because of my lengthy failure history, so I found this tutorial and have immediate reduction of my anxiety. It reads more complicated than it actually is, in part because patterns assume you know what you're doing, which I clearly don't. I have a friend who knits and I can commiserate with her and she's been incredibly supportive. But she's not a teacher and doesn't live close enough to guide me as I'm knitting. Self taught is experience engraved in my wallet. 😂 I thrive on RUclips videos, and still struggle. All of that to say, this video gives me hope and a new channel to turn to when I am distressed. ❤🔥💯%
Thank you for a detailed & thoughtful video. I bought the Wallflower Cardigan pattern because your FREE videos merit a monetary acknowledgement. Please keep knitting & tutoring!
Thank you for a very explanatory video on sleeves. I finally had my “aha” moment. I followed your instructions and the sleeves turned out just fine. All of your videos are easy to follow.
Thank you! I am making my first top down sweater, Love Note, but the instructions were silent about how to cast on under the arm. You are a life saver! And I learned a new technique.
Thank you so much this is my 1st attempt of knitting a sweater top to bottom so was quite anxious when came to underarms you explained it very well and have given me confidence to finish sweater for my daughter thank you again
hi, im not Paul, im his wife carol. thank you millions for your tutorials. i love youtube, but obv's it needs people to put on tutorials. i hadn't a clue how to do this procedure, being kinda new to adult knitting. following your tute, i've done it beautifully. thanks loads
Thank you! I am knitting my first top down cardigan and am stressing about this step in the pattern. It was ruining my enjoyment of the experience! Now I have an idea of what I will be doing. I appreciate this help!
Thankyou! I’m a continental knitter so found this a little bit tricky but I moved my yarn to right hand to wrap the yarn creating purl stitch and was able to do this!
Thank you so much for this video! I am doing my first top down sweater and had no idea what the backwards loop cast on was. Was dreading it but your video explained it very well.
I was so grateful for this advice. It’s was easy to follow but such a relegation - my underarm increase always looked so messy. So I searched and found your great advice. Now my project looks so neat ! Thank you 😊
Your video and explanation is excellent excellent, love it! So clear and simple and especially like using your channel cast on method for stronger connection to join sleeve. I used the backward cast on method and my underarms were a mess. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for doing this video. Like many other people commented, I was dreading casting on stitches for the underarms. I couldn't get a clear picture of how to do it from the written instructions. Your video clearly showed how to do this technique. Many thanks again!
THANK YOU. You were the only video I could find that showed the cable cast on Purl-wise for under the arm. Everyone else shows it Knit-wise as a standard, even when they are working on the purl side. It never made sense to me. Then you will see the list of videos showing how they try to hide those additional purl bumps. YOUR WAY- takes all that additional work away. Much simpler to do it the correct way first- right? Right. Thank you again!
Thank you so very much for this video . You have helped me be more confident that I can do this . I haven't knit a sweater yet , because I'm trying to learn as much as possible before I atempt to take this on . You are a very good teacher . Again thank you .
Excellent video with clear instructions! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the process. I am still new to sweater knitting so any tips in creating a neat underarm is appreciated! It was exactly what I was looking for and the first video that came up in my search so I will be giving it a try.
Thank you so much for a very clear, easy to understand video about casting on under the arm sweater. My first time doing this, and having watched several videos on how to do this and why certain steps are done, your video by far is the best. So thank you again.
I'm knitting my first sweater and just got to the part where I have to divide for the sleeves and cast on new stitches. I about had a panic attack reading the pattern so thank you for the easy to understand video!!
Thank you so much!!!! I have been dreading this part of my cardigan and was almost up to it and wasnt sure if I would know how to do it. This helped SOOOO much !
Thank you so much for thus helpful video. I’m making my very first shirt and was really worried about it this part. This was extremely helpful. Thank you!!
It is 2:15am in Melbourne Australia Your video is so so helpful unbelievable I have just started a top down seamless cardigan and I am ready to divide everything I see you are not using double pointed needles whereas the pattern I am knitting says to use double pointed needles can I ask you Are you joining your sleeves by sewing them together or are they going to be seamless
What a great video! Purling the underarm cable cast-on and the trick at the end with pulling the yarn to the back. It should make my sleeves neat and easy to pickup under the arm. Thanks!
Exactly what I needed! The pattern I’m following suddenly went very vague and I hadn’t cast on purlwise like this before - thank you very much for your clear instructions!
I've watched your tutorial before a while back and saved it 🤔 can't remember if I left a comment but I'm so glad to revisit. You taught this method brilliantly and I don't need to look anywhere else; thank you, I learnt exactly what I needed to. Side note: I would loooove to make the top in your video, its gorgeous ☺️
I've been knitting for many years. I've always struggled with this and decided to See if I could find out what options there were other than what I was unsuccessfully doing. This was very clear and easy to follow. Thank you!
So incredibly helpful! Thank you, i've saved this tutorial in my favorites since I will be separating for sleeves tomorrow. This will be my 4th sweater so, I wish I had seen this earlier :)
Reaching the armpit region starting to cast off some stitches for allowing the armpit region.. This is simple having learnt from Mah decades ago while I was a 10 yr old girl, niw am 75
That was so incredibly helpful and clear! Thank you! I’m working through my fiat raglan sweater (doll size) and the pattern is super minimal, just said “rest the sleeve stitches and cast on 4 underarm stitches.” I searched through so many videos and this was the only one that clearly showed how to do this step. I feel pumped and confident to continue! Thank you so much!
Thank you for this very helpful video! I was wondering, though, why you produced the first cast-on stitch with a regular purl stitch (inserting the right hand needle *through* the existing stitch on the left hand needle purlwise), rather than inserting the right hand needle *between* the first and second stitches on the left needle, as you did when creating the other cast-on stitches? Is there a reason for that, or could you do it either way to good results?
The "corners" between the body sts and the cast on underarm sts are naturally prone to gaps and holes so it's really important to minimize any tension irregularities there. Casting on between those previous two sts could potentially create or enhance tension problems causing those sts to be pulled away from each other. Depending on your yarn, stitch pattern, sweater shaping, tension, etc. it may be possible to get decent results by casting on between the previous two sts, but I haven't experienced a scenario yet that it works well for me.
Merci beaucoup ! Ce tuto m'a beaucoup aidé. C'est très bien expliqué et je comprends votre anglais car vous ne parlez pas trop vite. Je vais toujours faire comme vous, et le résultat est super. Do you have a tuto about when we begin arms ? Please
I’m knitting my first top down sweater so this is very helpful; thank you. Unfortunately I’ve ended up with quite big holes on either side where I’ve divided off the armholes... is that normal? :(
I'm knitting my first top down sweater, this video was super clear and helpful! Thank you so much.

Working on my first 'top-down' sweater, adding the underarm stitches had me stumped; your tutorial was fantastic and had me right on track in no time! Thank you!
I'm practically a new knitter... this was several thumbs up.. Thank you so much.
Thank you for explaining why you’re taking the steps you are - particularly bring the yarn from the front to the back between the last two cast ons - I learn better when I understand /why/ I’m doing something, instead of following directions rote.

Thank you CD! I have returned to this video for the fourth time I think. Very helpful!
Very clear explanation, thank you! I'm knitting my first top-down sweater and would have been completely at sea without this video.
I’m working on my very first sweater and the sleeves were the biggest point of anxiety for me. Thank you so much for a clear video!
Me too! Thanks very much, will separate my sleeves from the yoke tonight :)
Boy, did this video save me a lot of time! Thank you for making something “hard” into something “new”. Very easy to follow directions.
I have never thought about it that way before, but yes, just because a knitting skill is new to you doesn't mean it has to be hard!
@@thechillydog that is a GGmadeit quote
I am knitting my first sweater with circular needles, I was so nervous about this part, I was imagining this more complicated than it is. Thank you

My first top down so this video was extremely helpful. Clear directions and not too fast.
Re-visited again for a refresher. Working on my Christmas sweater! This Vid-ref will go into my Ravelry project pages as per usual. Thanks Ellen!
Thank you for a very explanatory video on sleeves. I finally had my “aha” moment. I followed your instructions and the sleeves turned out just fine. All of your videos are easy to follow.
Thanks. Been looking for 2 weeks for useful help (first sweater in 25 years) 😃 now I can move forward 👌🏽 nice and clear. 💕
Thank you so much, I was very confused on how to do this; turning the work over suddenly made sense!
That was amazing.
I love the colour and the richness of material.
Your sweater looks SO expensive. 🤗
VERY Beautiful❗
so very helpful! Thank you for showing how the cast on works within the context of the project itself.
Thank you! I am making my first top down sweater, Love Note, but the instructions were silent about how to cast on under the arm. You are a life saver! And I learned a new technique.
I'm knitting my first top down garment the Le Pouf cardigan and this tutorial and the Picking up underarm stiches will be very helpful thank you.
thank you Ellen..... i always have trouble when i split the sleeves... this will make my life much easier.... once again, thanks!
I'm working on a new top down sweater design, so I'll be covering this topic again, with a slightly different twist, in late February or early March.
Thank you so much this is my 1st attempt of knitting a sweater top to bottom so was quite anxious when came to underarms you explained it very well and have given me confidence to finish sweater for my daughter thank you again

My personal knitting philosophy... When I'm able, I'd rather take the time to avoid problems so I don't have to fix stuff later. Glad it helped you. 💖
Ha I know which videos you’re talking about. I agree with you.
Thank you so very much for this video . You have helped me be more confident that I can do this . I haven't knit a sweater yet , because I'm trying to learn as much as possible before I atempt to take this on . You are a very good teacher . Again thank you .

This is a pretty handy trick and a great excuse to knit more sweaters.
Reaching the armpit region starting to cast off some stitches for allowing the armpit region.. This is simple having learnt from Mah decades ago while I was a 10 yr old girl, niw am 75
Thanks for this quick guide. This was exactly where I was up to on my raglan sweater and it made letting the sleeves off so easy. A great tutorial!

Such a neat way to cast on he underarm stitches - thank you
The cable cast on is one of my favorites and it works perfectly for those underarm stitches. Happy knitting! 💖
Thank you!!! This was a game changer for me

I'm so glad this question was asked (and answered!) because I was wondering the same exact thing. The explanation is very helpful!

Merci beaucoup ! Ce tuto m'a beaucoup aidé. C'est très bien expliqué et je comprends votre anglais car vous ne parlez pas trop vite. Je vais toujours faire comme vous, et le résultat est super. Do you have a tuto about
when we begin arms ? Please
No, I don't have a tutorial about when to begin the arms. There's not one simple answer that fits every body size.
Fantastic video!
Whoops sorry, I meant your CABLE cast on method. It's superb.
I’m knitting my first top down sweater so this is very helpful; thank you. Unfortunately I’ve ended up with quite big holes on either side where I’ve divided off the armholes... is that normal? :(
