Gabe Newell is such a genius that he managed to take the Gym "unused gym memberships outnumber used memberships" business model and applied it to video games.

Great video, Lon! I've switched over to buying games on GOG rather than Steam, though I still buy steam games now and then as the GOG store doesn't always have what I am looking for. Unfortunately its rare for a PC game to get a physical release, otherwise I would quit buying digital altogether.

I have less than 100 Steam games and only played about 1/3 of the library. I'm more conscious on buying additional games since I don't play a lot of new games nowadays anymore on top of playing retro games. If I'm in the mood to play video games, I usually play my favourite games before trying anything new.

    • @jothain
      @jothain 2 месяца назад

Quite similar thing. These days I'm really curious about titles, but luckily I've gotten better at reasoning myself that "Hey, you already have like bare minimum +30 titles you've never tried and still you play stuff like OG X-Com, Doom, etc. virtually every year for that time you could play these other titles". Unfortunately I still tend to get few titles every year from these sales. I also have Gamepass and tbh I love it. But it's quite expensive and I've been thinking that I seriously should cancel it as I could buy those few newer titles for even full price. But the appeal of it's cloud gaming feature just makes it so fast to try title X and few times I've struck gold in titles I absolutely would've never tried. Would be different if I were young and had that time kids have.

There is some value I suppose in having a library of stuff you haven't tried yet, part of the joy of streaming was just having a lot of options. But a lot of it is probably FOMO and getting sucked into deals on stuff you might never have time to play.
But it is kind of tragic that there's no real legal definition of digital ownership. The fact it always companies are getting away with calling these purchases, and using the term buy instead of long-term rental or something, seems to violate at least the spirit of existing laws. Is it false advertising to say I'm buying something when you can take it away from me or change it remove my account at any time

    • @jothain

GOG has quite a lot of DRM free stuff and you can download offline installers for virtually all content. That's why I prefer it more these days than Steam

I have never had a good gaming computer so most of my games are cheap and cheerful, about £5 and I only have about 50 or 60.
The most expensive is Civ VI with all the DLCs and I waited for it to hit a low price before buying.
The way I look at it is that the really good games 'subsidise' the bad ones.

I have a number of games that require a 2nd log in to play and the company refuses to help me getting into older games I no longer have the SN for despite Steam being able to verify I'm the "owner". I refuse to buy games from that company any longer because of this policy and feel once you buy through Steam that should be it especially since Steam doesn't notify you of this added requirement. I'm also disappointed with the number of Steam games listed as "coming soon" and have been that way, in some cases, for several years. Steam has become a lot less user friendly over the years .....

This is a "problem" on many platforms whether it be Xbox, Switch, Playstation etc. I think because the value of games is so low that there is value in simply owning rather than consuming. I think this is part of the business model now, there will be analytics provided to publishers to "monetise" the "never play" market.

  • @jothain

Sales on these store fronts is really clever move tbh. Let's be real that business owners for 100% certainty know this thing, but they've calculated that still my doing deep sales they can still make money out of the titles. Just yesterday I bought was it signal that was in really deep sale. For sure I would've never bought it else. But really good price and looked fairly interesting so I got it. Only rare thing was that I actually installed it right after buying. Usually they stay in library for years for that "some day I should try that" feeling 😂

Also the fact that steam games didn't used to have a minimum cost until around 2018.
You could formerly find garbage games for literally pennies, including ones with steam Trading Cards.
Gobbling up cheap games used to actually net you a small profit. Enough to buy more garbage.

Most of my unplayed games are from bundles. You get a bundle with 30 games and the one I want to play is more expensive on the store than the entirety of the bundle. It is a great deal but you end up with such a bloated library. I think I am close to 800 and I would say over 75% are unplayed because I never intended to play them to begin with.

Meanwhile, 1 and 2 are so outdated they're damn near unplayable. You learn after a few sales and you calm down a bit.. but there's at least 10-15 I really haven't played beyond the intro out of 100+ titles.

Games bought on special, some played just for a short time and some not played at all, probably around fifty, hey less than ten dollars who cares, I will eventually get around to it and I am a retired gamer and I play mostly every single day, sometimes more sometimes less. Some of the classics are simply better than the new games and so many games, so little time. My likely best game, bought some time ago, still on the too be played list, monster hunter world and then there is the Epic free games, as well as some paid for on special. Even as a retired gamer, so many games, so little time and so much other content, streaming.
