    Thorpe retired at the age of 24 years old I heard, because he had a lot of things going on in his life and couldn't handle the pressure I read. So if he went another 4 years at the next Olympics, I think there would have been some really good races between them both.

      He had 0 competitors and was only competing against himself, he was so dominant in the pool he would do 1 event and then 20 min later jump back in the pool to do another and win by a long way, he said he quite because of the lack of competition, the loneliness, he was suffering from depression and he’s gay and couldn’t be out in Australia at the time.

    Phelps swam until 32, Thorpe swam until 24 .... The reason they haven't competed each other much is the early retirement of Thorpe.... Not Phelps' age.

      @@user-em4wh5ji3w I don't know if you're a Phelps fan boy, but you simply cannot compare Phelps and Thorpe in freestyle. He's only 2 years older than phelps. Phelps 23 vs. Thorpe 25 is prime time in 2008 Olympics. Your peak age as an athlete is between 23-27. Thorpe was good, but Phelps is the greatest. Mike even has the article in his locker in Beijing that stated from Thorpe he could'nt get 8 gold medals to break Mark Spitz record.

  • @s7654r
    @s7654r Год назад +2

    Phelps is the GOAT. Ian was quite jealous of it. Before 2008 Olympics, Thorpe said Phelps would not even equal Spitz record (7). Later when Phelps was peaking, Thorpe changed his tune and said Phelps cannot beat Spitz record (8). Phelps used this as motivation.

  • @toivonencresto
    @toivonencresto 3 года назад +10

    Hadn't Ian retired and had a full and adeguate training Phelps should had NEVER won the 200 free in Beijing and, given the superswimsuit era, now we'd probably have had 3.35 and 1.40 range (UNBEATABLE) WR in 200 and 400 free.

  • @webking185
    @webking185 4 года назад +23

    he got dusted in 2003 championship by Phelps in the 200IM, Phelps beat him by 4 seconds. He knew Phelps was the real deal and retired. If he was that good, why didn't he go to Beijing to shut everyone up. Nonetheless, shut down Phelps 8 gold medal bid. In 2008, Thorpe would have been 25 and Phelps is 23.........that would have been a clash of the titans. Pieter van den Hoogenband is 5 years older than Thorpe, and 7 years older than Phelps.
    Thorpe Olympics: 2000, 2004
    Phelps Olympics: 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016
    in the end, he gypped everyone of watching the two go h2h. I would bet in the 200 freestyle at 2008 olympics, phelps to dust him by 1 second easily. Thorpe had motivation, his motivation was to stop Phelps from going for 8 Golds...
    Cmon...you cannot even compare these two athletes.

      @@adamsmyth2034 what happened in 2004?" funny you mention that. As I just finished reading Ian Thorpe's 2014 autobiography "This Is Me". and straight from his mouth in the book, he finally admitted after years of speculation that his Adidas bodysuit he refused to compete without after 99, was a different version and material than what was made available to other olympic athletes for sale to them at a much lower price. His was a special designed, co developed $20,000 body suit that could only be wore once each race then discarded, and according to his own testing gave him a minimum half second advantage in the 400m. Which is about a quarter second in the 200, about what he beat Phelps by that day. And of the 8 swimmers on the starting block that day in 2004, only once person was wearing a $20,000.00 Adidas, one time use only, full bodysuit.

      No shade on Thorpe. Shame he retired. Only he knows ifnit ws mental health or feared phleps. Or the suit thing. Anyway in Beijing 2008. Didn't need Thorpe anyways. What phelps was doing was a very rare one off. With 8 golds.

      @@cyrussalmassi7118 It's not only the length of the suit he wore in question. but its properties and his stern insistence he would only compete if he were allowed to wear it and defense of it. If you read Thorpe's autobiography, he states that he had a custom co developed version of that bodysuit that was made only available for him to wear in his contract with Adidas. No one but him ever received an identical one to examine. His special version Adidas bodysuit swim suit cost $20,000 and could only be wore once per Competition. Adidas made several versions available for sale to other athletes, none even close in price to his. Even the 2008 Speedo "plastic" as you call them suits which were the Speedo Lzr suit, cost $550.00 to the athletes when they came out.

      He retired at 24 after 2 long bouts of illness and a serious shoulder injury that would later require surgery. He eventually had doctors worrying about his ability to lift his arm over his head, let alone continuing a swimming career.
      It’s unfortunate that he didn’t compete into his late 20’s, but I think it’s deeply unfair to say that he was dodging Michael. He was a great talent that ran into a long string of terrible luck health-wise.
