Move the Windows 11 Taskbar to the Left, Right or Top of the Screen - **UPDATED**
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2022
- If you like Windows 11 but hate how you can't move the taskbar to the top, left or right side of the screen, there is a way you can accomplish this. Before the 22H2 update, you used to be able to do a quick registry edit to move the taskbar wherever you liked. Now that does not work but you can still use the Explorer Patcher app from the GitHub website to accomplish this.
Here is a link to the Explorer Patcher download.

Thanks! Why Microsoft insists on making these "improvements" by taking away functionality is beyond me.
REALLY !
how do i remove it then
Literally the only thing keeping me from moving to W11 from W10 was not being able to put my taskbar vertically on the left side of my screen.
For ultra-wide monitor users like me, having the task bar on the left is a must. Microsoft should fix this!
Just got a new desktop with Win11, and was dreading losing my left side taskbar for the fake Apple look centered at the bottom, such a waste of vertical screen space. Hiding it helped, but pretty annoying. I'd searched for solutions before buying the PC, but only found your brilliant and flexible solution today. Thanks for your work!
Thanks a lot!, this worked like a charm: I have been using the Taskbar at the top of the screen for so many years now, that upgrading to Windows 11 was so uncomfortable and annoying to me due to the fact that the Taskbar was no longer allowed to be moved around... until I found your video. Thanks!
This is why most users have some apprehension about upgrading each new version of Windows, because despite the new and improved things, there's always features removed or that become less customisable. Finding out I can't simply move the taskbar to the left side on my second screen just in itself has put me off upgrading. The way my screens are set up, it's easier to see the taskbar icons in the top left than bottom of the screen. Right click context menu differences also.... and this only makes me think there's going to be more annoyances.
Same! Tbf, i was on board with both W7 and W10, but when just casually testing the task bar (because putting it on the right or left makes the desktop feel more spacious) in a store, i was dissapointed they removed this option. Like why?? 🙃
Thank you so much! This worked like a charm! I really don't understand why they took this feature away to begin with!
Because Microsoft is utterly incompetent.
I am emphatic about having the taskbar at the top of the screen. Win11's inability to move the taskbar was a show stopper, until I found your Explorer Patch. Works perfectly, easily configured. Thank you so much !!!
Thanks! This video is still germane in 2023 (almost 2024)!
I purchased a new PC last week that came with Windows 11 installed and have been trying to find how to fix the task bar "problem" ever since. I found your video today and it worked perfectly. Even better, actually, than what your video shows due to all the new updates of Explorer Patcher.
Thank you so much! I absolutely hate the taskbar being at the bottom. I have always kept my tabs hidden on the right side of my screen. Unsure if it is because I am left-handed. I am able to focus on my work easier when it is on the right side and not distracting me or getting in the way. Much appreciated! I was about to toss my laptop out the window. lol
This works perfectly, thank you so much since I cannot live without the taskbar on top !
Me too - taskbar at top is so efficient !!! I'm with you all the way on that.
Thanks for the help and the tip about Explorer Patch! It was aggravating how the latest Windows 11 patch killed the registry hack. I don't understand why the default for Windows Taskbar is at the bottom, when every application has the menu at the top. It's a productivity killer IMO to have to bounce up and down across the screen to switch apps...
It could be good, but where should I turn off the labels next to each icon? and why open it open each folder one after the other?
my 8 Y-o son, while passing behind me when I was using my laptop on Win 11, with the taskbar at the bottom : "Papa, do you know you can put the bar with the icons on the side? It is way better that way!!" ...
did this and it worked great. was perfect other than all apps showing what was open on the toolbar. I just reverted back to the 21H2 build.
I download 'ep_setup.exe', from the website linked, from --as of now;-- five days ago, yet when I try to open it or run as admin, it says it cannot run on my PC? I installed the update hardly 20 minutes ago, so I'm unsure if I've missed something?
Brilliant! Task bar is back to the left side of the screen, exactly where I want it to be!!!
ok how do i do it on my 2nd monitor? When U change the secondary taskbar location, it doesn't change. it literally cannot go away from the bottom default one.
Thank you so much! This was super easy. I was able to right-click, unlock the taskbar, move it, and lock it again. However, I didn't have to do anything else for it to still have the Windows 11 taskbar. I have Windows 11 Home 22H2.
Thank you so much! I need my taskbar at the top and this has helped a lot
thank you for this! i changed my taskbar to be on the left side of my screen and i got used to it and i loved it, my computer updated to windows 11 with the 22H2 update and i was about to have an autistic meltdown because i realized that i could no longer change it back to how i used to have it for like 2 years now! i'll edit with my thoughts once i actually manage to do this! thank you so much!
Guess you never managed it.
Seems to be working for me after Windows 11 Update 22H2. Thank you !!!
When I type to search on my Start menu, it still shows up on the lower left, any way to change this?
im on the newer version and i still cant move it do you know why?
I'm glad to find others like myself that NEED the taskbar on top
I'd like half a taskbar, it an in the way item. Thank you for putting move back in!!! They say a small number of unimportant users want this functionality. MS is not going to focus on it. I really appreciate someone watching out for the lil guys.
I always accidentally move it with the trackpad pad on my laptop but I never know how I accidentally do it. So how do I just move it back with my trackpad by clicking?
TY! I had a minor freak out on setting up my new comp. Very Helpful!
I'm reallly trying to get this to work, but when I run the .exe , it throws this error: "a device attached to the system is not running"
Dragging doesn't work for me, I have to actually set it to "Top" in the Explorer Patcher settings (which took a while to find, actually).
Windows11 23H2, still unable to move "Windows11 style" taskbar to top 😑, need to set it as "Windows10 style" so we can move it anywhere. But if you set it in Windows10 style, the Copilot button will always invisible.
The Explorer Patcher does not work on my computer. I really prefer the taskbar on the left of the screen, but this is not happening. Any suggestions?
Thank you very much!!! I moved the taskbar to the left (Win10) so it didn't get in the way when using a note-taking app. This did the trick!
The reason why I like the Start menu on top is because browser tabs are also up top. When I want to switch applications, I don't have to think if I'm going to a desktop application or a browser application first; I just move my mouse to the top. From there I pick the window that I wanted to activate. While this is a clever fix, I have trouble trusting unsigned code that I didn't write. I'll probably just try to use Alt+Tab more.
I am kind of afraid to use that method too. That is why l am checking the comments section first to see if there are any issues. Thank you .
interesting, i like it on the left, cause monitors are not tall enough and have too little space vertically and too much horizontally
@@johngreen2468 That makes sense for many, many users who work with portrait documents, code, and forms. I tend to work with landscape maps, spreadsheets, and tables. I just wish Microsoft would accommodate both kinds of users and just let us put the Taskbar where we want.
@@rogerdunn5932exactly !
How can I make sure I only see the icons in taskbar not the titles of windows?
Thanks! But for some reason now the volume icon changed and I have now 2 volume bars when I increase or decrease the sound volume... any clue on why that's happening?
Fantastic! Worked like a charm!
thank you! i am now able to put my taskbar on top of my screen! however, it seems like i can't make the icon centered even though i have changed it in settings. perhaps do u know how to fix it
do you know how to fix my taskbar still shows during fullscreen
I have a problem though, my volume bar and brightness bar disappear when I change to windows 10
Hi, Do you know a way to make the start menu icon also be in the centre?
perfect working ! great thanks for your work !
I guess the latest window 11 update removed the Explorer Patcher. I re-ran the .exe file and it still worked perfectly. Thank you for this! I am glad it still works. I can't believe Windows hasn't made an update to ad this feature back in.
It's super useful. Thank you very much for this opportunity.
thank you! I very much prefer having the taskbar at the top, closer to the window controls. Shame on MS for their arrogance.
you are the best man. Finally a good video. Thank your veryyyy much.
Bloody hell! Thanks a lot.
I tried the registry workaround but it kept changing back to 03 over and over again, it was only by chance that I came across this video.
Can't thank you and the developer of EP enough
idk why microsoft has to disable that in 22h2 and above, it's annoying. Really like windows 11 UI, but my laptop has a problem where a portion of the bottom screen is broken, therefore forcing me to move the taskbar to anywhere but bottom.
Worked like a charm!! Thank you
Thank you!!! Works well!
hey, how do i hide the names of the programs that are opened, so there is just icon in the task bar.
Good question, its annoying and cluttered
@@MingeShagger always combine is the key :)
Thanks a lot. Helped like a charm
Thank you! My brain did not want to accept a taskbar stuck at the bottom of the screen and now, it doesn't have to!
it took a while to work but it did, thanks!
Didn't work for me. Changed to Windows 10 style, but would not allow me to move the taskbar
Thanks - That taskbar at the bottom of my new Win 11 laptop was driving me nuts. Glad I could fix it.
an amazing work .. I have to thank you ..
Thank you!
HOW DO I GET IT BACK TO NORMAL
Thanks so much for this!
Thanks for the video, worked like a charm. Question please, in windows 10 and others you are able to resize the width of the task bar, unless I am being blind I cant see it. I am guessing that is not possible anymore? Thanks in advance, Raj
Thannk you! It worked!
...didn't work for me. After running the .exe it defaulted back to Win 11 style.
THANK YOU SO MUCH🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much. Really missed the top taskbar.
Thank you fir that! that works!
Fantastic thanks!
Thanks a tonne!
Thank you and developers. This app is gold.
Got it moved; thank you, thank you, thank you!
Explorer patcher did not work for me, I rolled back the update. I cannot be bothered....
At the time of writing this comment, I'm using Windows 10 with the taskbar on top. I've gotten so used to it that this video can be a lifesaver for me! When I get to install Windows 11 22H2 (after I post this comment), I'll get this patch installed as soon as possible after the installation. On top of that, I will also be pairing this with Stardock Start11 to customize my taskbar even more.
Let's just hope it works! I will be editing this comment when the patch is all set up and ready to go and when I've had a good look at all this patch has to offer.
Edit: I've used it for quite a while now and it's very good! It also works nicely with Start11.
How does it works with muti-monitor? I place my taskbar on the left side of my right monitor and it works both on win7 and win10, it that couldn't be done, I might not "up"grade to win11 when making my new PC.
Im not sure if it does and only have one monitor.
Thank You So Much for this wonderful video.....🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you so much!
Is it possible to keep Win11 start button, have it centered, and keep the start menu appear centered too? No matter what I tried, my start menu is popping open on the upper left hand corner.
I think the only way to really see the Windows 11 start button is if you use the Windows 11 taskbar which won't let you move it from the bottom. I have also noticed that the start menu pops out from the upper left corner and don't know if it's possible to change that.
worked great Thanks
For me ep_setup completely destroyed my explorer and it kept crashing and restarting. So that's no option for me. :/
Same here! I did it yesterday on the FIRST DAY OF A NEW JOB. Made me look like an idi0t right out of the gate. I was so pissed off. I absolutely HATE Microsoft lately.
Thanks! This is the only method that worked on my PC! 😁
Glad it worked and thanks for the tip!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
This is the only thing that works, many thanks!
Unfortunately this didn't work for me 100% I was able to move the taskbar to the right side but some buttons showed labels while others didn't and I was unable to find where I could turn that off.
After installing this my screen is black permanently. I don't know how to fix it
it's not working anymore, any updates
THANK YOU.
TYSM you're the best:)
thanks.. Its worked ❤
It worked really well, thank you!
I just have a question:
Is it possible to keep the icons centered as before and still move the taskbar?
Thank you!
late. but yes
How Close this from TaskManager? I had download this patch ,opened it and now I have only black window. TaskManager is only window what I can see. Help!!
Try to restart windows explorer from task manager
Thanks ❤
great, still works, thx
Thanks for this help,,, i have been looking for this solution for sometime...
i ran into some errors: the windows menu button does not work at all,, hopefully the 'sfc/scannow' fixed the issue..
now: the menu runs smoothly
Thanks again
sir you are a life savior
man. you erned this "like" like no one other. trully many thanks.
How does it handle multiple displays? Can I have the task bar on the side on some of my displays and at the bottom on others? I have 4 displays, and in Window 10 I have vertical task bars on my horizontal displays and horizontal task bars on vertically oriented displays (always on the "shorter" side to take the least amount of screen real estate). Not having this is a deal breaker for me. Thanks in advance!
I only have one (big) monitor so I have never tried it on multiple displays.
@@OnlineComputerTips Thank you! Since then I realized there is really only disadvantages of using Windows 11, so I will wait for Micrsoft to add this feature natively. If it takes them 3 years, I will switch then.
My question exactly, I have two monitors and prefer the taskbars on the outside of each. MSFT needs to quit hiring people who think they work for Apple.
I am sooooo glad that I read your comment. I have multiple displays as well and this has been a deal breaker for me with upgrading to Windows 11. I understand why they have made the decision to not write in the code, but I don't like it. Isn't the customer supposed to always be right?!
@@OnlineComputerTips First, thanks for posting this fix. Second, if you get the opportunity to test with multiple displays, or find out from someone if this works with multiple displays ... please post here. Thanks in advance!
Thanks. Old habits die hard.
thanks i pranked my dad with it
That worked to get the taskbar to the top, but the taskbar now displays a separate Chrome button next to each other for each window that is open in Chrome, which looks very crowded and unreadabe. What did I do wrong?
Make sure the combine taskbar icons option is enabled in the Taskbar settings in Explorer Patcher
@@OnlineComputerTips Thanks, that's indeed what I had overlooked. Was thinking I had accidentally changed it somewhere else in the settings (setting up a new laptop with Windows 11). Did not realise this was also in the settings of Explorer Patcher and that the default is NOT to combine and to mention the labels too. But now it all looks just as tidy as what I was used to!
Thanks !!
One more dream:
- Taskbar to the TOP
- Taskbar transparent
- Clock and calendar in the middle
and then I use the RocketDock on the bottom
Works great!
Im using a surface to take notes and having the taskbar at the bottom was quite annoying...
Bonus: with the Explorer Patscher you can change the context (right-click) menu back to the Win10 version!
You're the best!!
