  • Windows 11 does not have the option to lock or unlock the taskbar so you can't change the taskbar position, but you can move taskbar in Windows 11 using the registry editor. The registry editor will allow setting some "value data" for taskbar behavior.
How to move the taskbar in Windows 11?
    1. Go to Start and search for "regedit"
    2. Navigate to the following registry path
    3. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3
    4. Change the settings.
Change the data in the 2nd row under FE value.
    00 - Left
    01- Top
    02- Right
    03- Bottom

It's unbelievable that they removed that function. As if they have only webbrowsing and emailing grandma's in mind. I usually have 20 applications running, and having it on the left or right of the screen puts all the applications in an easy readable list. Also, the height of the screen is way more scarce than the width, which is another reason to have the taskbar on the side of the screen. I also always have small icons and labels enabled and grouping disabled. Hopefully i get it hacked back, otherwise i rollback to Windows 10 until 2025. Edit: Rolled back to Windows 10 already..

Same. The decision to disable moving the taskbar was idiotic. Clueless users don't mess with the taskbar anyway, they were never an issue. Those of us who prefer not to have the taskbar take up vertical screen space by hogging the bottom now can't move it to the side. Removing this feature makes no sense, especially since they haven't bothered to explain *why*. I bet users with ultrawide monitors are loving this change too, it looks even stupider on an ultrawide display.

Very helpful, and I agree with your sentiments about MS removing useful features from updates, such as being able to move the task bar to the sides of the screen, and the handy Quick Launch feature which has to be "reinstalled" with every update if you want to continue using it. Developers are like dogs, they have to pee around the yard to alert everyone that they are there, and they need to continually change things to justify the continuation of their jobs.

I understand with 24H2 the ability to do as you are in this video goes away. Could you, please tell us how to prevent this from occurring? I'm on 23H2 and everthing I read isn't for 23H2. Thank you.

Great job windows team, you just copied the hell out of apple and removed any features we liked that distinguished the two. But my grandma will be happy with the lack of features and confusion

Doesn't work for moving it to the left. It just resets to bottom centre after a reboot.

While using this feature and aligning it at the top the accessibility window shrinks in size and the top three shortcuts(normally wifi , Bluetooth and airplane mode) kind of shrinks halfway to the center of those 3 shortcuts. Is it only me or you too have it

This is bad I tried this method on my laptop and guess what I followed the tutorial exactly but on my computer, the taskbar doesn't even move to the top no matter how I restart Windows Explorer or the laptop itself nothing changes it stays still at bottom, It's better to use Linux where there are no unnecessary limitations like these.

Funny enough it is described under help how to move it, but i dont see that option anywhere under the taskbar settings as the help funtion described it.

Why would I have to do a registry edit to move the taskbar again? If you have a widescreen OF COURSE you don't want to use the bottom or top as the taskbar! So is Microsoft saying Windows 11 is so incomplete that it doesn't even allow one to move the taskbar as nearly would be universally desired to use a wide screen effectively? Seriously? If you can't even do that, then why would I believe that the OS is even complete? It's insane I would have to modify the registry to move the freaking taskbar! I'll be sticking to Windows 10 until they have ironed out stupid BASIC stuff like this.
