  • Ive had the Ricoh GRIII for a while now and for a good time its been my daily driver but over the past few months I've drifted away from it a good deal and hardly touch it now.
I feel like ive found my happy place with my photography and in this video i want to discuss some reasons why its lead me to selling the GRIII.

There are lots of cameras with better focusing but not many that will fit in your jeans pocket and can be part of your edc and that delivers the quality that the Ricoh delivers. You can truly have this camera with you whenever you go. That point is often overlooked. The only true competitor I’ve found is the Fuji X70.

Well, it depends on the size of your pocket. I find the discourse that the street machine has to be compact a bit fundamentalist. And there are plenty of small, dignified cameras out there like this dust-collecting sensor machine, too.

  • @hcamacho2
    @hcamacho2 2 года назад +9

I think it all comes down to whether this camera fits into your style or not. In my case, I lean more towards getting people faces and their dynamics with the environment of my city so it sits alright with me, given that the camera is so discrete and easy to operate that you can get way too close to a scene without bruising it, and that is a tremendous advantage. I totally had to change my mindset about the viewfinder "issue" and work on a better mental visualization of how far or how close I have to be to my subject in relation to the lens, at certain point it becomes second nature and you dont even need to look at the screen to know if you got the shot right or you screwed it.
If you are more interested in architecture, juggling with shadows, colors and photographing people's back maybe Ricoh is not the camera you need.

  • @larrysalaets7088

I recently picked up the GRIIIx and am quite impressed. I did add the GA-2 adapter, and while it no longer fits in a pants pocket (no problem putting it in my jacket pocket), it does reduce the dust on the sensor issue. I also find the 40mm equivalent lens to be easier to use during the current COVID situation and the distance that people seem to want while out and about.
That said, I definitely see your point on wanting more variety of focal length choices, and the Fuji will click that box nicely. I shot Fuji for several years, but have since switched back to Nikon (and their Z mirrorless system) for more serious work. I will likely shoot with the Ricoh for a while, but do miss my X100V at times.

I use the adapter/filter combo on my standard GR III as well. I know it changes it's portability but I really don't want to deal with any dust on the sensor. I also take it one step further by putting gaffers tape over the mic and speaker openings. It renders the video useless to me as there won't be any audio but video on the GR III isn't very good anyway.

I am not a loyalist to any brand and totally understand your points with the GR III. I actually owned a GR III and ended up reverting to the GR II for better ergonomics (just felt better in the hand). They are great cameras but yes they do not posses every feature. The AF is one of my key features that a camera must posses and do it decent enough to be able to count on, unfortunately the GR III falls short. I have multiple cameras and the camera that I can trust and gives me amazing results is my Sony A7C with a 35 mm Carl Zeiss. The AF on it is simply amazing It never fails me. Even the color science that many seem to criticize with out even trying it is also amazing.

For me that seamless camera is the Fujifilm X-70, which is ironic because I generally dislike Fujifilm output and colours.
I shoot with my thumb, waist level, screen flipped up. The usability of that camera is peak. I would so much prefer the GR, but the fixed screen is a dealbreaker, and I want them to concede the extra width of the lens out and weather seal it with no retractable parts. It wouldn't add much to the footprint anyway, and it would solve the dust problem. Plus you could better mount a lens hood, filters, and other things, like the X-70.

I've just decided to pickup a GRIII and the points you're sharing are super helpful :3
My "soulmate" camera has been my RX1RII which I got used a while ago. It produces top (probably unmatched) quality images at the 35mm focal length I've come to love, but it's definitely not a pocketable camera (doesn't even fit in some smaller bags I carry). I've tried the Leica D-Lux 7 for a bit (which I think might actually be a compact camera that suits your style well!), but the shooting experience hasn't been as great as I expected, and having gotten used to the Sony's full-frame images, I just find the images out of the D-Lux great, but not amazing. Not to mention that the D-Lux, just like the LX100II it's based on, isn't truly a pocketable camera either.
I hope the GRIII will really give me the kind of portability and performance I want. Even though I've always found 28mm a bit wide, I feel that it might give me the kind of challenge I need as I've gotten so used to 35mm :P

I am wanting the Sony RX1MII. The price tag of $3k prevents me from buying it. Nice 35mm focal length vs. the Q2’s 28mm is a plus. There is the possibility of digital zoom to 50mm and 71mm and I like that. I don’t need a pocketable camera. I live in Seattle. Most days are cool or wet so a jacket pocketable body will do.
Just purchased a Ricoh IIIx. The jury is out. Like the B&W sims. I love to crush my blacks and this sensor does a good job of it. I know there is no EVF but I do miss not having one. I have got the hang of one hand shooting yet. The snap focus is a major feature of this camera and I do appreciate it. So far I like this camera. Will it be my primary camera? I do love my Fuji’s. The GRIII and GRIIIx come close to capturing that feeling; the IQ is worlds superior and yet, sometimes, it really isn't... almost too clinical for me. (But that's the ridiculous nitpick.) It's the slightly slower AF than those earlier models, and a battery life that's lucky if it's 1/2 the runtime of the predecessors. Based on your critique, I don’t think you’re the right photographer for this camera so parting ways was a good shout. All point and shoots drain batteries so this feels like a silly point. All fuji cameras drain batteries but people still shoot them! The lack of view finder forces you to shoot differently, to get angles and compositions that you’d never go for if you had an EVF. It sounds like you bought it for the hype and expected it to be like every other camera, or God forbid ‘make you a better photographer’. GR shooters that embrace it’s quirks produce images that they never could on other cameras because with the GRs, they have to shoot differently. You don’t want to shoot differently, that’s okay but just say that rather than regurgitate saturated info.

new series gr which actually broke. I can totally agree with the focus it can be hit and miss, don't know whether you tried the first or second ones they were real bad with the focus. But the b&w images I get out of them I can never get out of other cameras. Ive had nikons, canons and now fujis. looking thru my photos and then looking at the camera it was taken on and it was a ricoh and i think from this little camera I can create these photos. I believe in mastering a camera with all it flaws and getting the best out of it using my skills. I can live with the bad autofocus not being perfect, cos it has the brilliant snap focus which takes a while to get used to but once you do and the discreet size I get photos I would never get on another camera. If I want to really work an image after i will take in raw other that 90pc is jpeg. As for the batteries they will go flat quite quickly if you leave back screen on all the time, i look thru the external viewfinder that I bought second hand from ebay to compose the shot, then i set the screen to show the image for about a second to see the shot was taken. I will never leave my ricoh's in the cupboard collecting dust because I enjoy using too much. Too many people are so busy picking on the negatives of the camera they have and forever chasing the perfect camera, I bet years ago people with their leicas and others just got on with what the camera supposed to do and that is to take photos.

If you can’t get past the need for a viewfinder then clearly this camera won’t work for you. The Ricoh’s are for those who aren’t bothered by constraints and can see and appreciate the design merits of the GR cameras. The GR is a niche product that speaks to street photographers who can’t afford a Leica (and no, I am not putting the GR in the same quality category as a manually focusing Leica however they do have a similar vibe).

Paying so much money for a pocket camera that will collect dust on the sensor is nonsense unless you like to spend money. It is not the only pocket camera that exists. And there are cheaper ones where you can clean the sensor yourself. In the end, it will not be the camera that determines if the photo is good or not.

My everyday camera is the GR II. Not sure how many People needed a smaller body and the price to pay for that slightly smaller body was huge ie smaller body , downgraded ergonomics with no dedicated back focus button or one press auto exposure in manual mode , no 4/3 ratio , no built in flash ...
For me having done away with the 4.3 ratio is a deal breaker

I wish Sony would do something like the GR series. Putting an APS-C in a slightly bigger RX100 body.
Size is a big deal for me. All I want is a camera that I can carry around and it must be better than a phone. The other choice I have is the ZV-1 or RX100 but I want a big sensor. sigh...

I'm not sure I could ever sell my GRiii, but I have similar gripes about it, especially the autofocus. Only thing I would add is the problem with the rear dial. It is very unreliable, I really wish it was a D pad.

A camera with incredible image quality, in 28 and 40 versions, with unique functions but, but... expensive and special to collect dust in sensor. Unacceptable for a camera of that price. I distrust any camera that does not show me the sensor. So far no manufacturer guarantees that the sensor does not have to be cleaned. Luckily there are many camera options that allow you to clean the sensor if you need without disassembling the entire camera and also allow you to change lenses. If this camera was 1/3 of the current price, maybe I could be tempted. I prefer to go for some Fuji XE, X70 X-Pro1, M43, Pentax Q or even Samsung Mini NX. Why fanaticize with a only camera and so expensive? it's just a tool.

I have fujifilm x-t100 with viltrox 33/f1.4 and 85/f1.8 and these are amazing lenses. But most of time it stays at home because I’m too lazy to take it with me. I also tried Fuji x100v and wasn’t impressed at all. Autofocus is pretty unusable in low light. Also i like the look of Ricoh images better than Fuji. It’s more natural. Couple days ago I bought Ricoh iiix and I’m impressed. It’s really sad that it doesn’t have the flash like first version of GR because i used fill flash outside all the time when I’m taking photos of my family.

Hmmmm.. had every Ricoh GR from the film camera up to the GR3... I even sold all my DSLR s and accessories many years ago as the GR became the only camera I needed .. however my relationship with these cameras ended about 14 months ago due to dust on the sensor and nobody willing to repair / clean the camera sensor .. I miss it , and i could curse Ricoh .. £800 and an unusable camera .. I'll never buy another Ricoh ... I now use a Fuji x100f .. which I love .. the Fuji is a beautiful camera to use . I miss the snap focus on the Ricoh but not enough to go and spend a massive amount ov money on another one that could fxxk up within hours / days or months of purchase.. I was always careful with my cameras ... Too expensive and prone to dust , Ricoh sadly lost me to Fuji ..

I don’t use mine much… but when I do, there’s no other camera that fills the niche it does. Nothing else has that image quality, small size and IS.
If I’m going out to take photos primarily, then I’ll usually take my Sony full frame gear - but if I’m travelling super light the Ricoh is a lot more inconspicuous.
