    Hey Wingsnpaws! we absolutely love your videos - so helpful, thank you! I was wondering where you bought these toys and the papaya from and if there are certain outlets that you would recommend for African Greys? I usually try to buy from Amazon but there isn't much of a selection. Thanks!

    I have some questions. My African Grey is about 3 years old and has a mixed pellet and seed diet, but he seems to only eat the seeds. I tried only giving him pellets but he doesn't eat them. You recommend a pellet diet, so I'm trying to switch his diet. He used to like me hand feeding him, but now, everytime I take a seed out of his bowl to hand feed him, he takes it and throws it on the ground or just drops it without eating it. A lot of your videos talking about desensitizing an object of environment relies a lot on treats like seeds, so I think changing his diet will really help with the process. Another thing is that I offer him various fruits like grapes and apple slices, but he ignores them more often than not, he does like carrots, but he only ate when people weren't around him. When I approach with a new kind of food, he either inches away or takes a bite and leaves. How do I make him more comfortable with new foods? Both the pellets and the fruits? Also, he likes showering, but it's very hard to clean just his feet. How do I get him to be comfortable with the sink and water coming out of a tap. Also, he is pretty comfortable with stepping up on my hand and going on other places, but sometimes, when I need to put him somewhere else or back to his cage, he refuses to step up. Should I just keep trying? Or should I wait a while then come back again? Another thing is his perch, we don't have a cage for him as his wings were clipped when we got him. He has a metal perch with two bowls and two beams where he sleeps. He comes down when he wants and explores, but not often, it is usually me bringing the perch to the garden or puting him on perch-like objects in the house. Is this ok for my bird? Should I switch to a cage? Also, aftr his wings grow back out, do you recommend clipping them again as we don't have an aviary and would prefer him not flying around the house all the time or teaching and training him with his wings? Could you post a video on how to train a fully-flighted bird around the house?
    To sum up, these are my questions:
    1) How do I change his diet comfortably?
    2) How do I introduce new foods like fruits or apple slices?
    3) How do I make him more comfortable with me washing his feet and the sink?
    4) How do I make him more comfortable with stepping up after he's out of his perch and on something new?
    5) Is his current living condition ok?
    6) What do I do when my birds' wings grow out?
    Thank you so much!
    I love your videos and they're helping me a lot!

    Hi, Have a 3 Month old African Grey...Seeing your videos really liked the way you take care of your bird....Infact I have named mine Smokey as well, hope it can be 50% as cuddly as the original Smokey :-) Keep the videos coming, really look forward to your videos.
    Mine has just started to fly & would fly and bump into things, would even fly/hop to its perch but never on my hand on call...Wherein it would easily perch on my hand otherwise whenever I call it, also it has just started mumbling/groaning by itself which I take as a sign it is learning to talk. At what age generally does an African Grey really start to talk?

    • @wingsNpaws

      Smokey started talking at 6 months. However, Greys generally don't begin talking until 2 years.

    Hey I have a question:
    I have an Amazon parrot since a few months and she always starts biting when we handle her. Not out of fear but out of fun. We have tried ignoring it, putting her back into her cage and showing her that it hurts ("auaaa!") but none of it worked. She gets 4h+ daily attention, lives in a very calm environment, has the whole living room to fly and an own room with big tree branches and toys and gets the proper diet and daily showers. She's very lovely otherwise, just she really doesn't get the difference between a human finger and a tree branch

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад +1

      Have you tried recall training her? I would begin with that and also trick training her. This will give her a "task" to do when she's on you, so her focus when she's on you won't be on nibbling your fingers but elsewhere in the environment. Also try to have a foot toy on hand so when she looks like she's going to do it, you could give her a toy to chew on instead.

    Hey! I have a question, how often should you change out your birds toys so they don’t get bored?

    • @pikapikachu8236
      @pikapikachu8236 6 лет назад +3

      BooM Industries once a week should generally be sufficient as long as they have plenty of other stimulation outside of their cage.

    • @knogne5073
      @knogne5073 6 лет назад +1

      BooM Industries people usually say once every week or once every other week. I’d rearrange all the perches every week, and maybe change out a few toys during the week, if the bird seems bored.

    • @yanusanders7686
      @yanusanders7686 6 лет назад +1

      BooM Industries Big Tree branches , especially with leafs on them (from fruit or nut trees) is the best "toy" you can give them. Don't waste your money on buying toys more than once a month when a big branch is for free and makes them spend hours destroying it and gives them climbing opportunities

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад

      The short answer is as often as you can. Smokey has a number of foraging toys in her aviary that I don't rotate out but I rearrange where they are located. Her wooden chew toys and other acrylic toys are switched out every few days.

    My African gray named Oscar does a very strange thing to me when I hold him. After holding him for about five minutes or so he starts opening up his wings and wrapping them around my fingers and clenching onto my fingers very tightly and doesn’t let go and he starts killing and making some baby noises. I’m not sure if it’s some type of a mating thingThat he’s doing, but then he will regurgitate and want to give me what he regurgitated. I just wanna know what you think of that and how I should handle it because at that point I can barely get him off my finger he will not leave my finger

    The only way I know to keep my african grey stimulated is to bring him everywhere I go; to work, to the park, pet friendly restaurants. Will this be too stressful on him? I hear they are sensitive birds.

    • @knogne5073
      @knogne5073 6 лет назад +2

      I know the question wasn’t for me, but generally I think when you put a bird into a new situation (Especially a sensitive bird like an African grey) you’ll probably realize that they get a bit overstimulated/stressed out. So first you’d have to build a strong trust bond with your bird, and then slowly desensitize the bird to being outside. It could take weeks or even months. But it should be possible. :D I’m sure that after a while the bird could learn to love it.

    • @yanusanders7686
      @yanusanders7686 6 лет назад +1

      parrots are easily overstimulated. for example my Amazon parrot (which are less sensitive than African greys) is after 2 months still scared to go anywhere except her room and the living room.
      It's like how a toddler also needs routine and constant environments

    • @Rainygirl3100
      @Rainygirl3100 6 лет назад +1

      This shouldn't be too stressful to your bird, as long as he's been trained to experience the outdoors. It's important to stay calm and encourage him so he doesn't get scared, and introduce him to new things slowly. Birds are pretty flighty, and can be easily spooked, but if you teach him that he's safe when he's with you, he should be alright! Like in the videos with Smokey, her owner introduces her to new objects and places and people as often as he can, but does it in a way that she will be curious more often than afraid. Good luck!

    • @knogne5073
      @knogne5073 6 лет назад

      Ya nu Sanders yeah but you should challenge that a bit, it’s good for birds to experience new things. I sometimes take care of my friend’s Amazon, and after only a couple days I had him sitting in the kitchen with us, and could walk him around the house and take him outside a little. (He wasn’t too keen on going outside, but I imagine that if I had taken him out a couple more times he’d have loved it.)

    • @yanusanders7686
      @yanusanders7686 6 лет назад

      K Nogne mine is flighted and if I take her to a new environment it will get scared and fly away. If it's not beneficial for the bird to be somewhere else then it's not worth the stress and aggression you cause in them

    I have an african grey who screams every single time my partner walks out of the room. Then when he comes back into the room, he stops. How would you suggest handling this situation?

    • @alaynahanson2549
      @alaynahanson2549 6 лет назад +1

      Ravenous Nightwind - Hey there, I hope you don’t mind me adding my two cents! It sounds like your bird has separation anxiety. There are positive reinforcement training methods to gradually decrease the anxiety your pet experiences when their favorite person leaves the room. Similarly to a dog or a baby (i.e. peekaboo), your bird probably thinks that your partner is gone forever when they leave the room because it doesn’t have a sense of object permanence. I’d definitely recommend you do some research on separation anxiety training! x

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад

      I have a video on screaming, so make sure to check it out. But a real quick tip, do not come running when your bird is screaming. That will teach them that screaming is a good way to get your attention.

    • @crescentdarklight
      @crescentdarklight 6 лет назад

      wingsNpaws we have gotten to this point where he will make whistles instead of screams. But he still screams a lot or makes extremely loud high pitch noises when he's picked up or when we put him somewhere even within his field of vision. The problem is, a lot of the things people have recommended we do just don't work. I'm not sure if he just needs more time. He was a rescue bird, he used to be at a zoo. He has a previous caretaker before us because that zoo had shut down some years ago. Being 17, and never had any real bonding with a human, I can only assume it's affected him in a serious way. So there probably is a sense of separation anxiety there. But at the same time..I'm not sure if it's just that but also screaming for attention too.
      He behaves more with me and I am not sure why that is. But he'll bite my partner more than me. Even though he likes him more. He'll let him pet him and rub his neck. But even though he behaves better with me, he doesn't like me to do that. I have a total of five birds, so I'm really familiar with how to get them not to do basic things. But he's really kind of got me at my wits end because he doesn't like to do a lot of the things people suggest. Sometimes nothing helps. Especially if it's late evening when they get most active. It's so loud sometimes and so unstoppable that it doesn't stop until my partner comes home. Which leads me to believe he's calling for him in some way.
      We've been trying to basically not respond when he makes loud noises. Then we respond to him when he makes a good or pleasant noise. Which has helped. Some. It just hasn't fixed the whole problem. We will usually only run to him if he has done a good thing. Like make a pleasant noise or whistle and tell him he's good. It just doesn't always work even though we're pretty consistent. Or if it will take longer because he's older and sort of stuck in that particular behavior. They told us he did this before we adopted him. So I guess it's a behavior he's done for a while.

    Hello buddy! I have a question, I've seen a dude tossing a towel at a baby african grey outside his cage to pick him up, and kinda force him eat honey from his finger while stroking his head. What kind of process is this? I see it terribly wrong.

    • @cockatielnation5425
      @cockatielnation5425 6 лет назад +1

      HellVenge
      Wrong on many levels! Not trust building for one. Parrots should never be forced into interacting with humans. Only towel a bird for medical treatment that can't be administered otherwise. The basis of a meaningful relationship with your bird is trust on both sides. Also, honey should not be fed to birds or infants under age one as is can contain pathogens that can make them sick.

    • @HellVenge
      @HellVenge 6 лет назад +2

      I see. I was trying to save a few of them, since the man who was selling them was going to sacrifice the birds due unknown problems, then without any kind of permission he recorded himself doing such things under the reason to "teach me" how to tame the birds, and well I found it extremely wrong and got very angry at it tbh.

      Greys are very vocal birds and are generally very loud. Birds don't scream as much if they are happy, however they will still scream a bit every day.

    • @user-oz7wl5cc7l
      @user-oz7wl5cc7l 6 лет назад +2

      Depends on the grey. Some are just quieter than others by nature. Think of it as some humans being shy and not talking very much, while others love to shout and talk. Near the evening and mornings, parrots tend to be louder by instinct to "call the flock together" when waking up and going to sleep. There is no such thing as a bird that doesn't make noise. They all talk, but the most you can do for noise level other than having a naturally quiet bird is to prevent them from loudly screaming (see some more of wingsNpaws videos for this, they give helpful tips.)

      Rekan Goran Not all birds are able to speak but some which are of a certain gender can be trained to talk it requires lots of time and patience they are not like humans so they take time to speak I would reccomend repeating a few words and see if he/she is interested with that word then he/she may repeat remember this takes time hopefully your successful with your training I have a female cockatielĺ she isn't very vocal since she is a female she can't speak this is an example of a gender specific bird male cockatiels can talk when trained anyways I hope for the best

    What if you're African grey is picking

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад +1

      Feather picking indicates that something in the environment is not right. It doesn't mean that you're a bad owner, it just means that you need to find out what is likely causing the picking and change the environment. The first step is making sure your bird is checked out by a vet to rule out any health problems or deficiencies. Once that is ruled out, you have to address the following: are you giving your bird enough sunlight? is he/she given opportunities to bathe/shower? is he/she kept mentally and physically stimulated? Foraging toys offer great mental stimulation. Flight training offers great physical exercise. Regardless, you should not accept that picking is ok and ignore the problem.
