  • Today we are replacing the tie rods on my 2004 WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is a super easy job to DIY and save some cash! That said please be sure to take your ride in for a proper alignment after you finish. I did my tie rods as they were warn and were causing death wobble for me at any speed over 45mph. I'm not saying this will solve your problem by any means, but mine were bad and were consequently causing issues.

I'd suggest some anti seize grease for those tie rod ends...

Can you please add to the parts list a tie rod puller set, so people are prepared for that step. I overlooked it and it caused me to do another 40 minute drive to town to get a fork set. Your video was awesome though!! Thank you very much!

Your local auto parts store should have these for rent or have a program where you pay for it in full, use it, and return them in proper condition and get a full refund. Unless you want them for future projects (doesn't seem practical since you can rent them) you can purchase them.

What magic tool did you use to get that upper arm off with no clearance???????????????????? I am at that step and I just came back inside to see how on earth you did it. It feels impossible and you used that!!! :) What is that? Where did you get it?

Not sure what you are referencing. Slap a time stamp and I'll check it out here shortly

Hi there, my lower tie rod got bent so I didn't have a starting point, the new heavy duty aluminium tie rod is longer as well so I dont have a reference point really, should I screw both tie rod ends (left & right) the same amount of turns and then adjust the toe angle by rotating the tie rod once fitted?

Wait wait wait, did it fix the death wobble??

It helped but not officially. Turns out the adjustable control arms the previous owner put in were pulled in to tight which was the main cause. Overall the entire front end was worn out though

I'm going to hazard a guess from memory and say they might be the same part number

So I just replaced my tie rod ends and am waiting to get an alignment, anyone know the measurement from tie rod end bolt to end bolt?? Just trying to get in the ball park

    • @AGuyandHisProjects
      @AGuyandHisProjects  2 года назад

I think you'll have better luck by eyeballing it than a generic measurement. Could be wrong but that is typically how I get my ball park lol

@@AGuyandHisProjects thanks, I ended up measuring the front and rear of the tires

@@timjd7964 this is an even more accurate way. Hard to do without a partner though

What I've always seen done is counting how many turns you took off the old one so you can put on the new ones the same exact turns.
Before taking the old ones off put a paint mark after the jam nut with a paint pen.
If you have a new assembly and not just the rod ends you can sit new assembly side by side with old assembly and mark paint marks on the treads for you to get your jam nut correct on new assembly. Maybe use a measuring tape from end of tie rod end to the end of the jam nut on next thread.
You should be very close to aligned.
At least this way it will be good enough to drive until you can pay the $140 for your 4wheel alignment.
