I think it was the gold smuggling ring that led to this. Ain’t no reason why simple poachers would do this and bring all this attention to their operations. Something much deeper was going on and I have a feeling it was tied to that gold smuggling ring.

The movie rocked my soul & touched me deeply! There’s not to many stories that affected me like this 1! She’s such an inspiration & had a true calling to help the Gorillas. It’s such a tragedy that she was killed. These poachers are so dangerous & still are, yet they will lose in the end. The structure behind poaching is extremely complex. There is a lot of money & power behind them & that is why they get away w/ it. And when there are no animals left, they will find something else. It’s a devastating cycle &a deep blow to both the animals & in nature.
I remembered the movie. From waaay back. I thought they tried to imply a local at the end killing her but always stayed a mystery. Such a shame. What a brilliant n amazing woman wit a equally incredible mind
That cut in the wall may have been precut. While she was out of the house. Tin makes noise. No money or any theft period. This is truly a mystery but it seems that the police didn't do a very thorough investigation. I hope this is not corruption based.
She was. However, at the end she was utterly messed up and decompensating by using drugs/alcohol. This is fairly well known among the staff at Kigali. I think she realized what a horrible battle she was up against, and I for one (a recovered/recovering alcoholic) do not lay any blame. It's just sad that her life at the end was so tragic.
Because of, "Gorillas of the Mist," I watched when I was 12-14yrs old. I become more aware of endangered species. Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Bonobo Chimps, Orangutans have truly grasped my curiosities. As an adult I'm thankful to be inthe generation where we were able to not only test their DNA but break it down more to understand the genes and the closeness of out or relations and the distance that is minute between each species and us. How we have changed since understanding DNA more and realizing our close relations to other species and how far we are from some species. Wayne Mcguire, thank you for selflessly helping the world see the suffering and struggling gorillas. Then going to another part of the world and helping humans survive their devastation in this same world different part. You are an incredible human being. I dont know many murderers that care for animals and other humans ads selflessly and deeply as you do. Also what motivation would you have had. You lost everything you had worked so hard for and a dear friend. An incredible mind he assisted daily and was in awe of. That was were he belonged in the world why would he kill the person that brought him there. He is innocent in my book.
I remember seeing the film about her starring Sigourney Weaver, and it's still one of my favorite films, and one of the films that reduces me to tears time after time.
Now who will be their champion? Ms. Fossey gave the world a gift, bequeathed the children a sense of wonder and responsibility to not just gorillas, but to all animals. Whoever killed her killed their own humanity and endangered a world treasure and the national reputation.
There's something about the way this guy's voice breaks @45:13 that tears me up. I cry every time I see it and then keep crying all the way to the end of the film, through Dian's last journal entry and the images of her interacting with the gorilla, and just the images of the gorillas themselves. I'm a sobbing wreck by the end of this documentary!

Love what Dianne did for conservation. I was Peace Corps volunteer in Bwindi at Buhoma Community Rest Camp. Mountain gorillas came to out camp ...I remember sitting watching the Silverback of that particular gorillas group...indescribable. Will never forget and hope to go back.
I think it was the gold smuggling ring that led to this. Ain’t no reason why simple poachers would do this and bring all this attention to their operations. Something much deeper was going on and I have a feeling it was tied to that gold smuggling ring.
I am certain that she is watching her gorillas from up above and happy that we finally listen to what she was saying !!!! We are lucky to have had such a human being in our mist, a gentleman mentioned in the documentary that if hadn’t been for Dian Fossey the gorillas would be an instinct specie today. A huge legacy at a very heavy price !!!!

14:08, the irony of the Rwandans worried about negative publicity when mass genocide was just a few years away. An excellent book about that genocide was written by Philip Gourevitch.
That’s probably why they didn’t want anymore negative publicity.
Was that book what the movie, " Hotel Rwanda ", was based on ?
@@dianehunsberger2271 no, but as horrible as the events were, this book is one of the best books I have ever read, fiction or non-fiction. He is just an incredible writer and does an excellent job showing what the genocide was really about, contrary to what Wikipedia states.
Who benefitted from the genocide?
@@lolazal1 the Rwandan government. This is why we have the term 'dictator' in our vocabulary
One of my first inspirations! My brother was a National Geographic magazine subscriber, where I learned about Dian Fosse & courage.
So sad . They are truly evil. Wish nothing happened to these poor defenseless animals.
I remembered the movie. From waaay back. I thought they tried to imply a local at the end killing her but always stayed a mystery. Such a shame. What a brilliant n amazing woman wit a equally incredible mind
This is a amazing story what a brave woman I’m glad that their legacy goes on for the gorillas
An awful thing to happen to someone who devoted most of her life, to life.
My Hero.I see all animals through her eyes...as equals. Her spirit will never die.
Now who will be their champion? Ms. Fossey gave the world a gift, bequeathed the children a sense of wonder and responsibility to not just gorillas, but to all animals. Whoever killed her killed their own humanity and endangered a world treasure and the national reputation.
All of God ‘s creatures are sentient beings.
She was such a boss. Dian Fossey's name still lives on.
Wanted to add that line that the guy says at the end: "She did not die in vain." *sob* What an emotionally moving documentary!

A story of sacrifice, an honorable one , brings all of our attention to the importance of nature and care of animals. Salute.
Poacher loss of profit? linked to some high placed officials? Money is evil indeed 🥶
Huhh?? Money is NOT evil. Greedy sociopaths are evil.
Sorry, you apparently missed when they were speaking of how much gold smugglers would have HATED having their names put on a piece of paper. That is NOT 'official paper' or anything like that, merely written down, meaning SOMEBODY knows about them
Definitely government and Mr Z who hated her
People are evil.😮
How horrible that her murderers were allowed to get away with killing this marvelous woman. Such a loss to the world, such a terrible and sad story and ending to her life.
Dian Fossey, you did not die in vain! Gorillas, divine beings still live because of your sacrifice. Rest in eternal peace, Dian Fossey, Digit, and all the gorillas who died.❤
Dian made a lot of enemies in her crusade to save the gorillas. So who knows who killed her?
That's the point..
Even if it was a smuggler, the smuggler would have had to have had working knowledge of Dian’s habits and daily living intel.

My guess would definitely be the gold smuggler’s. Could also be the smugglers were paying off the judge in addition to the killer.
27:40 Interesting detail. Wonder what the people from The World Bank were toasting too with a giant bottle of champagne on their way out of Rwanda!? That doesn't sound shady at all! 🤔🦧🙈
He was actually on the plane with the gold smugglers.
Wrong. That "gold smugglers" killed her was just one theory that was never proven. Besides, he says that the people in suits in first class, drinking from a giant bottle of champagne, are from the World Bank. Do you know what the World Bank is?
Good point
And not long after Dian's death, the country is plunged into a civil war, I'm which the only people to benefit are foreign gold diggers.
Maybe they were celebrating the successful termination of DF n their gold shipment..May she rest in love😢
All these years later I’m not sure it was poachers either.18 years she messed with them gorillas and poachers and wasn’t killed.
I though it was said they believed the guy who was her student might have done to steal her papers I believe that I wonder if they still have the hair she had in her hand
Wow, I hadn't thought about that. Very good point.

The movie "Gorillas in the Mist" was excellent. This case reminded me of the separate murders of George and Joy Adamson.
and their story was of "elsa..." if i remember right. i've known both of these stories for a long time and while i knew about what had happened to dian, i did not know such about the adamsons.....they had a good story/life also to tell.

so sad that such an amazing woman died in such a way. I remember watching Gorillas in the Mist and crying my eyes out when the gorillas were killed and especially when digit was killed, I was effected more when the gorillas were killed than when she was but thats due to my having more time for animals than I do for humans. Dian opened the eyes of many to the wonderful and intelligent world of gorillas and their plight, for that many will remember her for, may she and the many gorillas whose lives were so heinously taken RIP.
Excuse me what? That’s incredibly messed up. I don’t know why animal lovers proudly admit that they care about animal lives than human ones as if that isn’t a sign of a psychopath.
you're actually weird for boldly saying you felt more affected by the death of the gorillas that hers

I remember her....i watch her documentaries since i was young... RIP dian😢
Two things she did that set her up for disaster was that she was mean and often volatile with her workers and then openly made it known that she had information on gold smugglers. Surely she must not have understood that her actions could lead to repercussions.
It occurs to me that people in western societies have no idea that there are countries with no safety nets. Yes there would be people who knew what happened & they would also know to keep very quiet about it.
She understood but her passion for the animals was greater than the fear. And some people just have this aura about them that makes them feel like “they run ish”. Ijs you see the hornets don't kick the nest
Wow, thank you for this recent documentary. Always great to get information about Dian Fossey.
She helped me to see they had a soul and they communicated and loved had families just amazing no one could tell me animals weren't feeling loving beings which is what I passed on to my children and grandchildren we share this earth love each other

Way to live her life!!!!!
The clue to the murderer was right there in her hand.....human hairs. Victim wouldn't pull her own hairs.
The covered it up, because it she found out things and most likey people that is associated with the government, and was send to kill her, and the people around her might have took bribes to tell where her location was.
Yeah thats forensics 101
Nope. Nat Geo is trying to cover up the known fact that she was killed by the local Natives.
Youd think they could exhum her body for current forensic analysis...if not for anything more than just to clear wayne.
It may have been her trying to cover her head/face during the attack and from the blow her hair may have been cut with the machete leaving it in her hand.. Just a thought. Very tragic no matter the truth.
It's crystal clear that she was offed to silence her, she's a true hero and the survival of the gorillas is solid proof. Rip dear lady ♥
In my heart of hearts I know they'll never find her killer but, Karma will deal with them. She was a Godsend to the animals and like-minded people
