Nope - that's just how you prepare a cafe cubano. It's a way of replicating the look of a espresso shot - you mix a little bit of coffee prepared in a moka pot with sugar to create a pale brown paste, which is the crema of the espresso. Then you add the rest of the moka to make up the rest of the espresso.

I've got a big old moka at home, it makes about 600-700ml of espresso at a time. I got mine from an Italian deli.
