One of my favorite mysteries! I used to teach 8th grade US history and I'd tell my class a similar tale as you, and then we'd brainstorm all the possibilities. In 1999 I visited Roanoke and during the informational meeting the park ranger asked the audience to share their theories and then he patiently went through each scenario, sometimes illuminating additional facts or playing devil's advocate. Finally some one said, "Alien abduction" and the audience all laughed. He calmly explained that he'd thought a lot about that and "at this point it's as plausible as anything else." I no longer teach US History, but every couple of years I check to see if anything is new and I'm never disappointed: the discovery of site X, all the archeological excavations which have uncovered 16th century artifacts on both site X and Hatteras Island, there's the Lost Colony DNA study, drones with Lidar, archeologists with magnetometers. I am so hoping that the mystery is unraveled and solved in my life time!

Hi Alicia, if you're looking for current developments there's a book by Scott Dawson published in 2020 called The Lost Colony and Hatteras Island.. it seems to crack the case.
"The legend of the Lost Colony has been captivating imaginations for nearly a century. When they left Roanoke Island, where did they go? What is the meaning of the mysterious word Croatoan? In the sixteenth century, Croatoan was the name of an island to the south now known as Hatteras. Scholars have long considered the island as one of the colonists' possible destinations, but only recently has anyone set out to prove it. Archaeologists from the University of Bristol, working with local residents through the Croatoan Archaeological Society, have uncovered tantalizing clues to the fate of the colony. Hatteras native and amateur archaeologist Scott Dawson compiles what scholars know about the Lost Colony along with what scholars have found benath the soil of Hatteras."--Publisher's description.

@@georgeedelblute6282 Yeah, think most of the pieces were put together. It was believed to be a mixture of starvation, possibly battle and a large group of the colonists ending up with a group of near by natives. I also remember the group looking for them wasn't able to sail south to the island in a reasonable time frame and it kind of built up the mystery even though it seems like it was far more straight forward than people building it up would imply.

It is believed that to survive they went to live with the croatoan Indians and ended up intermarrying with them and were assimilated into the tribe. Something that would definitely be worth researching.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the "lost colony" went to Croatoan, though.
It could mean that a handful to up to roughly 1/3 of the colonists ended up there or alternatively, that other English folk eventually ended up there & assimilated with the indigenous population, because without more specific genetic analysis, there's no way to know whether those with the same last names as some of the colonists actually descended from those colonists or from later arrivals of English people with the same last name OR who mixed with much later arrivals of English or other people with English heritage & intermarried into modern families with those last names but who had very little or no recent genetic link to the colonists themselves.
Just sayin', I like to consider all objective possibilities until additional info comes to light or I finally learn about it lol.

This story has way more to it than his 15 min video. Sir Walter Raleigh couldn’t get back to the Lost Colony due to the English Queen sending money to fund the war with Spain. The Croatoan were a peaceful tribe. The flat lands were known to flood. The english settlers wouldn’t have known how to navigate survival during the hurricane season. I was in the cast of The Lost Colony for 3 years on Roanoke Island and have lived in NC for 25 years. Tribes down the line had blue eyes and whiter skin. Names like james, White, Bordon and a few other English last names can be found in record in local tribes generations later. Its likely that most settlers died after not being able to survive the tough outerbanks terrain. The Croatoan likely took the survivors with them and fled the area during the wet season. A statue of virginia Dare still stands in the Elizabethan gardens on Roanoke.

So, you asked for theories about the colony, and after listening to your video, here’s mine. What was left of the settlement after the Indian raids, probably had to leave in a hurry. They found themselves outgunned (so to speak), and probably had initially intended to go to Croatoan in the south. Hence that’s we’re the carved clues pointed. Then either one of two things happened: 1) They went to the Island in the south, and found it equally inhospitable as Roanoke (Or possibly already occupied by native Americans who were ready to kill them). Then they defaulted to plan ‘B’ which was settling to the north. Or 2) They tried going south, but normally strong and unpredictable winds from the south blew them north anyways, much like it did with one of the earlier colony ships. In either case, their immediate concern was likely just plane survival and they weren’t as concerned with (or never got the opportunity) to go back to Roanoke and correct their tree-carved mistake. The others settlement could have later been attacked, and the remnants either killed or integrated into the local tribes…. most likely both.
Great video’s MRBallen. Glad you found your calling.

Even as I watch the western movies it’s always portrayed as the indigenous people who were the bad guys. If that were the case, everyone living today would be frightened of us. In those days, they were only trying to protect what their forefathers had taught them, keeping their families protected and protecting their livestock and farming. Love your approach to teaching, because that’s what it is. I taught US history for decades with a particular focus on Roanoke, occasioned by my experience in survival training. I found using Maslow’s hierarchy to be an effective lens to view the disintegrating colony. It’s likely that the colony broke into groups and attempted different avenues to find refuge. Basically, South, North, and West. I’ve hiked and paddled much of this terrain and feel it could appear to besieged and starving survivors that they needed to break into factions. I’d suggest that the involvement of Spanish adventurers be included in the overview. The multiple Dare stones, the map with the star fort, European artifacts, and even DNA all suggest dispersion and conflict, basic enemies of survival

Two adults cannot get their hands to meet with our arms wrapped around the tree. They have long branches that sometimes dip almost to the ground and then turn toward the sky again. They are also draped in Spanish moss much like a Christmas tree is draped in tensile. Can you imagine how majestic they look? Would you cut down such a majestic tree as that? I wish you could see it. You find trees like this in the southern states. I've seen a few, but only a few, as old and big as the ones on our property. It's been in my family since the late 1700's, possibly early 1800's. There are conflicting accounts. We have a family cemetery on the property and some graves are marked 1800's so I'm inclined to think that time period. I would literally cry as though I've lost a loved one if someone were to cut one of these trees. I wish you could see them, especially one old girl in particular. I'm multiracial. I had my (The government still calls it this) American Indian Blood Quantum Level blood test done early in life, my surname is a Tribal word, my blood Quantum Level s are predominantly native American, 13 different tribes, so still a mix. In school my family was the only known Native American family enrolled at that school. When I learned about Roanoke my teacher was very nervous and everyone turned to look at me like I was the appointed tribal ambassador, any mention of "Indian" boom, all eyes on me. Every head in class turned looking at me. I just put my hand up. "We actually prefer the term Native American. I know it's in the book but could you call us Native Americans...no big deal." Then I quickly learned that no matter what color skin the other kids in my class had they were a bunch of assholes. As a boy named Mark who I know had a Caucasian mother, we lived in the same apartment block, and a black father looked at me and said at the top of his lungs "You mean red savages." And he got a laugh. I waited for my teacher to do anything. She didn't. (Public school in a dirt poor neighborhood. Looking back she really wasn't paid enough to care. Looking back at that moment I think she was silent because she was thinking, I can honestly make more being a waitress and put up with less obnoxious people.) Then it became laughing and what are now known as slurs being chanted. I remember my family always giving me the you are an American mix. You are Native American, you are part black, you are part white, basically every race that hated each other and has prejudices against each other you are. Those prejudices still exist. Don't expect to be accepted by any race. You are a mix and you will always be, to them, an outsider. If anyone says something about what you are, remember you are the American dream. Your family exists because of diversity. You are not us or them. You are all. Never let someone who is also an American forget or think that you are less than they are. People only put others down because they need to feel more powerful than someone. Human nature. People will not accept you but you. But you are not allowed to allow anyone to put you down for what you are. You stand up for yourself even if you stand alone.
Then I stood up thinking at that age, I'm about to get kicked out of school. I shouted the teacher's last name I made it very clear that was a Polish name. He ancestors at some point came to America seeking freedom and a better life. I went through every kid's surname I could, pointing out they either came here to America or had to Come to America. My family has been in America, since before the American revolution. We have fought on every war. Call me Indian. Call me Savage. Call me red skin. Call me all of that in class. Most of your asses wouldn't be American citizens of it wasn't for families like mine. I am not going to tell a single slur back at you. It's only insulting my people to pick on your races. You are all American....you are also trash.
I picked up my book bag, walked right to the principal's office, explained what happened. Inside I was thinking get me the hell out of here now, but I just requested that my mom be called as I didn't feel safe do to being called slurs because of my ethnicity. My teacher was shortly in the principal's office talking to him as I was nervously waiting for my highly protective, product of a mixed race marriage, proud of being mixed mom to come collect me, as I wanted to cry as I was just a child but I had to stand up for myself. Stand strong even if I stood alone. One person army. Show no weaknesses. By the time my mom got there and was ready to verbally destroy anyone who got in her path, yank her kids out of that school, and possibly whip a shoe at someone. I was like, I need out of this school now! Nope. Turns out the principal was very upset because his mother was Apache. He took this personally. He was terrifying. Just in his normal mood. At least to a kid. So I was like, yo. I can just walk home. It's fine. The principal is pissed. I thought he was pissed at me. I made my play, "no need to tell at me Sir. My mom will most likely yank me out of this school. I'll be gone. Your face is actually purple and the veins are popping out. Please tell at an adult. I'm ready to go home." He wasn't mad at me. He was mad that kids who had special presentations to learn about their ancestors, how their ancestors not only got to America and about their cultural identities were openly being racist. But the teacher did nothing. So I got a few days off school. My mom spoke to Mark's parents. Which got heated. When I got back to school my principal had all the students assemble in the gym. There was a talk about what happened. While that was happening I was checking the exits. Them he said the whole school was going to learn about Native Americans, our culture, we were going to have guest speakers and presentations.
I stand by what I said as a kid to my classmates. All of you who either came to America or were taken here. You all are Americans now. I don't know where the people that posted this are from. If you are an American. Shut up. Chances are your ancestors came here. If you are a citizen don't think any native person of any tribe needs you to speak for us. We can speak for ourselves. The American government did horrific things to Native people it's not like the settlers were the only groups of people that tried to end Native Americans. If you are an American citizen and you wrote "your people" as a jab using the mistreatment of native Americans as a put down, you are an American, The United States Government did a hell of a lot to Native Americans, so YOUR PEOPLE, did it too. As an American our government has a lot of blood on its hands so don't use native Americans and what we have gone through as a way to trash someone else. Native Americans can speak for themselves. If you aren't one shut up. If you are an American citizen, shut up.

I went to pow wows, I wanted to be one! Strangely enough, I looked Native American. People said I looked like Rita Coolidge. Alas, we never filmed the segment but I've been fascinated by the story ever since. I haven't read many of the comments so this may be redundant, but from what I recall (and I'm a little vague now on some details) the Lumbee tribe of North Carolina has claimed for decades, perhaps centuries, that they assimilated the Roanoke settlers. They pointed to the frequency of blue eyes in their family trees as one indication, and more recent studies have noted other genetic similarities with European heritage and even language patterns.

My 5th great grandfather (James Whitaker) was the first permanent white settler in Ohio. He was captured by Wyandot Indians in Pennsylvania and brought to Ohio along with other white men who were also captured. The Indians killed all the white men captives in a course of 'run the gauntlet'. However, my grandfather survived the course with little to no injury's and the Wyandot Warriors adopted him and called him their "son".
My grandfather met my grandmother who was also a Wyandot captive. The Indians gave them their blessings to marry and, as a wedding gift, gave them 1280 acres of prime farm land near the lake. He become a respected trader with the Indians and could speak their tongue, and was the first educator of the region.
Point I am trying to make is it is very possible the Indians probably didn't slaughter the women and children and may have befriended any 'brave' men who they grew to respect.

I knew some of the descendants of Roanoke survivors. Taught them in high school. The survivors went south. Ended up in Robeson County and Scotland County NC as well as some of the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. They were adopted by the tribe Lumbee. Some of the descendants today have bright white hair some have blue eyes, some dark skin some white, some brown eyes, some brown hair some black hair. The tribe has a lot of archeological evidence in the area, a state college in Pembroke. They finally have Federal recognition as a tribe and are working to get a reservation. They have a tradition of having adopted the survivors of Roanoke by verbal history as well as escaped slaves. They also have a Pow Wow every year which the public is invited to. Unfortunately their native language has not survived. They do have a distinctive ways of using certain words in a pattern (patois), a slight accent.

    Mr. Ballen,
If you look at the two stones that Elinore Dare wrote on, you will see the first stone has, what looks to be a plus sign at the top center. Now, what if that plus sign actually represents a "cross." I remember you stating the Mr. White before he left to England, told the residents, if they were in distress, to put a cross on their message to signify danger.
I would like to see exactly what Elinore wrote. However, I sincerely appreciate you sharing this piece of American history with us. Well done.

I just watched a History Channel video that was uploaded a month ago (May 2024) that they are finding pottery that could have come from the colony in the water south of the CRO tree closer to the middle of the island. They are speculating that it could be the original site of the colony and that they were moving north when they etched the letters on the tree.
