The book would have been a flip book to get the attention of planes and ships. If you flipped through it in the sun it would look like flashes of light, like a signal. Very smart to use the sun to reflect the light like a beacon.

I work as a Law Enforcement US Park Ranger for the National Parks. I worked a season at Assateague Island National Seashore. On that island, there are remnants from a late 19th century shipwreck that occured there, but some days you could see it, and other days you couldn't. The island would perform an action called "turning over'. During storms, high winds etc, the sand would change the surf line dramatically within a few hours. Where land was flat, would now have a huge dune. Where massive dunes laid, were now exposed as a crater. It's a common occurrence. My theory is that the boat has been there the entire time, along with the grave but was simply being buried by the surf and sands during the first survey six years after. The body, being "recently buried" was most likely human error in dating the time of death. The saltwater can slow the decomposition of organic material and in some cases even preserve decaying bodies, thus contributing to the fact that the bones weren't on par with the decomposition timeline. The crew most likely attempted to flee the island when they realized there were no means of survival there, and possibly took a life raft or constructed a makeshift raft to attempt their chance of rescue at sea. Finally, the book was most likely a personal belonging of Scott's that was left with him along with other personal effects.
I went to Assateague one! I spent most of it in Chincoteague but went to Assateague twice, and saw some of the horses, that sounds really cool to work there!
Scott was the only one to survive and used the tinfoil trying to signal aircrafts as he landed on the atol in question. Then he died, and the rest is your assesment. Your scenario can easily explain why the PIs found his bones in other place. Also, if we asses that he most possibly had cotton clothes, may be he was hiding the tinfoil on his body, under the clothing. As he was hiding from the sun behind the ship, he passed away and later his clothing will decompose and the "book" just stayed beneath his body. Best I could come up with so far...

I have worked for the government and I can tell you that some employees merely fill out the appropriate documents like there was actually a thorough examination of the island when there wasn’t actually anything done at all. Very possible.
My first thought too. Likely, the survey was done badly/not done and the fishermen were there the whole time. How they lived for 9 years and who buried him are harder to answer. My guess is that somebody attempted to fashion a second boat and left the island and perished at sea.
I've heard this theory: "One of the most popular theories seems to be that a Chinese fishing ship had found the boat drifting at sea along with the body of Moorman, who just may have lashed himself to the vessel to keep from being thrown off in the storm. Having a cultural explanation for a phenomenon that doesn’t make sense in the story makes the theory more convincing to me. That book is the best clue, and the most out of place thing about the story. The key fits the lock, so to speak. I’m not sure the rate of decomposition that would occur with a body adrift on the sea, but I’d bet its slower without much bacteria except what lived in the body when he died. If the decomposition timeline fits, this would be more than plausible.
This is a legit theory. My husband is a commercial fisherman and he's told me stories about guys finding bodies and they'll throw them back. If they call someone in it can mean an enormous monetary loss.
Another interesting detail: At around 1:00 PM, hours before the storm arrived, John Hanchett Sr (Peter's father) noticed a concerningly strong wind coming down the mountains, so he, and several others, went out to find the Sarah Joe to alert them of the impending storm, and have them return to shore. They looked for hours and no one could find them. Eventually, the storm arrived and John's worry for his son turned more into panic. So, John went BACK OUT into the storm and searched for several more hours until he was eventually forced back in. I think this is a very interesting detail because it raises the question of whether the boys were ALREADY GONE before the storm even hit? I know strong winds can wreak havoc on the water, but with the experience these 5 guys had, and the type of boat they had, everyone said they should have still been nearby and fairly easy to find. So, why weren't they?
I will not pay attention much with the "Goverment Survey" fact. They can simply said they done the survey, but actually used the taxpayer money for other thing. The island very unlikely change, so just copy previous survey report. No one will argue anything.

What i tried to said there is more possibilities what happened to the crew if we also take into account the survey is not been done. Maybe Scott arrive there earlier than 6 years after they disappeared, and survived by eating fish and drink animal blood, and live in the boat but still died years later, and poacher/illegal fisherman found the island and saw the boat, try to scavenge items in it. But instead found the body and buried it. Or more extreme thought the poacher killed Scott because they worried been reported to authority but still buried him out of respect. This is just a Big maybe's. What i try to said, we can't said for sure Scott not arrived to the island earlier than 6 years after they disappeared.
Home boy ate the other guys that didnt die from the storm they where at thrown off course they used all the fuel trying to find the way home . then engine broke off they drifted to that island and the tin foils in the book was piece of the men he ate to bury with him .maybe he was buried by one of the other guys and a storm hit or a rouge wave hit the island took the survivor and the boat engine out to sea

It's quite possible that the crew may have been on an island, possibly uncharted and uninhabitated, somewhere else for a few years and maybe they tried to leave there and ended up here years later.

Occam‘s razor answer: 1, The foil paper is called Joss paper, also known as incense papers. These are often burned or buried in various East and southeast Asian funerals. 2, So he was likely buried by east or southeast Asians probably illegally fishing in the area, and therefore not reporting it. 3, The lack of bleaching to his bones would not imply it was a fresh grave. It would imply that he was buried when there was still flesh, or some flesh, on him so he had been buried a long time before his grave was found. 4, I would have to assume that the survey was rushed or done really half a$%#d. Whoever was doing it didn’t even bother going ashore in some cases. So they just missed everything.
It may not have been a sloppy survey of the island. Another commenter says that the sands on the island “turn over” and can make huge dunes or at other times craters. These dunes may have covered up the boat and grave at the time of the survey.

In some ways I like the “old stories” much more and even the way he is presenting them… Stories like this one have NOT been told by any other author as far as I know and I really love the mystery behind it . A simple solution is being overlooked, if they tested the age of the bones and subtracted that age from the age he went missing we could tell how long it took for his body to arrive on the island.

Yup. Another commenter who claims to have done surveys referred to it as a “bar stool survey,” when for remote areas you pretend you did a labor intensive survey, and move on to another job knowing it will be years before anyone notices if there are mistakes.
Absolutely. That was the very first thing I thought - “they pencil whipped that survey”. Guaranteed. They’re not gonna waste the time, effort and resources for a “routine” survey of uninhabited islands. Just pocket the funds/grant money. Took a look at the boat, fibreglass with foam core, very very small for five grown men, whoever kept that boat pointed into the waves ( away from the island ) during a violent storm and keeping it from getting swamped or rolled was very skilled, but burned all their fuel fighting the storm and found themselves adrift in the ocean currents. A small boat in the vast ocean is very hard to spot and I believe the survivor(s) saw a plane and tried to signal it, perhaps with the tinfoil on the pages but why cut it down unless there're only scrapes or it kept breaking apart from every attempt to signal someone or it was pre made and thrown onboard in the " unlikely event ", great importance was attached to this and Scott carried it to his death. Given how small that boat was and how violent the storm was four were washed overboard with no lifejackets, drowned and had fallen to predation leaving the last survivor ( perhaps lashed to and hanging onto the wheel to steer the storm ) to drift across the ocean, currents can carry you one way but wind, storms and waves can carry you another, leaving you doing long lazy circles in the middle of the ocean and in the calms the current will pick you up again and carry you along. Another survivor lasted 14 months adrift at sea in the same ocean surviving on everything he caught and I believe Scott did the same thing with whatever fishing gear was left onboard, he was still alive as he approached that island but he had one problem, the reef surrounding it. In the picture of the boat the transom is still in one piece so I think Scott had jettisoned the motor to clear the reef and then made his attempt. In the same picture there are two large gouges on the port gunnel, the boat had rolled on the reef throwing Scott onto the reef with the boat landing on him and perhaps causing an amputation ( the small amount of bones found ) but was able to make it to shore and crawl above the surf line where he eventually died from his wounds. I believe a local ( one man ) was fishing in that area and if was designated a marine sanctuary or the island off limits, he was there illegally, saw the boat beached and knew a way around the reef and went to investigate and came across the skeletal remains of Scott and, being local, heard nothing about a missing person lost at sea so gave him a "Christian" burial and kept the secret to himself unless he had to answer questions has to why he was there, and eventually dying himself taking the secret to the grave. As for the boat not being seen a large surf could have carried it up to the tree line where it sat for a long time unseen until another large surf carried it back to the beach, and then back and forth over the years. As for timelines and aging of the bones sometimes things are just a mystery. Anyway that was my shot at this story. R.I.P to the four lost at sea and to Scott.
I like your idea. The paper was 100% Joss paper. You can look it up, it’s very common. This leads me to believe that the person who buried him was east or southeast Asian. As you say, fishing illegally. The non-bleaching of bones would not be such a mystery. If it was not a fresh grave. Bones are bleached when they’re left out under the sun for a long period of time exposed. If he was buried, not long after his death, sun bleaching would not have occurred.
according to friends and relatives of the missing crew, the Sarah Joe (and grave) were discovered in 1984 - but this find was not reported by the personnel responsible. It seems the Sarah Joe (and its five crew) got caught in a bad storm, and at least one of the crew made it to the island (possibly after three months at sea). Whether he was alive or not is a matter of conjecture (one theory siggests he tied himself to the boat but died at sea). However, someone found and buried the dead body of Scott Moorman and within the grave was placed what seems to be Chinese ‘joss paper’, or a type of coloured tissue paper containig silver strips (this usually signifies good luck in the next life). It is thought that illegal fishermen from either Taiwan or China found the dead body and buried it with respect and consideration - even building a ‘cross’ out of driftwood.
The paper was a type of emergency sos signal that was made to hang from a branch and when it was hung the foil spots would act like a mirror and send out sos . The chinese idea while it's anyone's guess on if it happened and I can understand the thought behind , it was unlikely imo , since if they were following their culture the money would of have to been burned or they would be haunted . Along with that even a fresh body that's only been out in tropical weather and the sun for a few days would be completely unrecognizable so unless he had his id or he his body was in really good shape so they could identify some of his features why would they have put up a cross . Since they would have been very hard pressed to find out the guys nationality and probably even race depending on the location he died so I would not expect a cross because of that . Lastly his body wasn't completely buried so we know his body was already falling apart when it was buried. While last part is just speculation , the part about the sos is a known emergency trick so it's likely it is a sos signal so it is not complete speculation and is very likely , but no one can be 100% certain .
Yes the Joss Paper fits the exact description, and makes the most sense. It could have even happened after the survey, with the boat being at sea. The body's condition might have been a chance of conditions, and mummification.
@@rickyricardo3551 You are assuming that there are no Christians in Taiwan or that whomever finds the body or bones would only post a grave marker that matched the belief of the dead individual. It makes more sense that they didn't know the ethnicity or religion and either were Christians or assumed that the cross is used to mark all graves from 'western' countries. I would use a cross to mark the grave because a single stick of driftwood wouldn't convey "grave marker' in my opinion.

The "tinfoil" in that book sounds like silver Joss Paper, which is an offering to the dead. It's likely that some Asian fishermen found the body, and gave him as decent a burial as they could before moving on.
Oh wow! I had assumed it was perhaps some kind of attempt to get attention of passing planes by reflecting the light, but this makes a lot more sense since the book was buried WITH the body. I think you nailed it.
I think this is definitely what happened. They starve or get dehydrated on the boat while it is adrift and then die off one by one. Once someone died he'd either get eaten or floated off the boat. Last survivor eventually dies and is adrift for who knows how long (bottled messages can take decades to reach land). The boat then finally reaches land on the atoll with the body on board. The body gets found by a fisherman or an explorer who gives it a burial without reporting it and that is the only explanation I can think of that explains why some bones belonging to this body were found on the shore and not in the grave.

On the surface I'd normally agree. But In These instances creating wildlife sanctuaries typically includes very VERY environmental minded ppl. They're not the type to cut corners on something they think would benefit wildlife esp potentially endangered wildlife. It's not rely the same as say a survey team checking an area for a future govt building or something. Plus hawaii is pretty well known for being pretty green. Pun intended

B) You don't know the terms and conditions surrounding the this sanctuary. There may very well have been some incentive to deliberately "overlook" any finding like a grave or a boat. C) If your "theory" conveniently fits exactly with your preconceptions, it's quite likely to be crap.
My guess: they all died at sea, each time one of them died they were dropped overboard. Scott was the last to die on the boat. Boat floats around for years until it washes up and grounds after the survey has taken place. Either someone who shouldn’t be there discovers him and does the burial or someone who decides not to report it does the burial. The book is a flip book signalling device that the crew made. The person who does the burial doesn’t know what it is but assumes it has some significance to the deceased and buries it with Scott. In the story it says the bones are recently buried, not that Scott was recently deceased. If Scott’s body was inside the boat for years the bones wouldn’t get sun bleached. It might be that scavenging animals moved some of the bones and the person who buried Scott just buried what was left in the boat.
@@jollyscarecrow why 6 years? Might have been 6 days or 6 weeks before they all eventually died and the boat floated around before coming to rest on the island after the survey. Wouldn’t be unheard of for a boat to float around for years, being pushed and pulled by the currents.
I was doing house work whilst having this play in the back ground - hearing johns laugh made me smile - I had to rewind it! Even just as background noise my mind is captivated by the stories so much that I subconsciously responded to his laugh! Fab channel, working on watching every video!

I think they landed on a similar island, survived for a while, but then ran out the resources on that island. Then they patched up the boat and set sail again. Landed there a little after 6 years later. Scott died of starvation, they eat his body, and whoever is left buries the remaining bones. Hence why there are other bones not in the grave. The remaining make some kind of a raft and leave before the 9 year mark
near-perfect explanation, except why would they build a raft instead of sailing the actual boat that they had? was the boat so badly damaged that it became inferior to a raft? or did they just wanna ditch their boat at all costs, believing it was cursed as it seems to have brought them nothing but trouble?
@@CemEke_CIO so the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. And in this case, that's the fact that it was damaged. The probably took some stuff from it, but decided a huge boat with limited crew is tough.
One question I have that I didn't really hear is why were some of his bones in a grave and some found a good distance away from the grave on top of the ground...

It’s possible they landed on another island where they stayed for years. Eventually they got their boat sea worthy and tried to get to a more inhabited island but ran ashore at this island. Scott may have died so they buried him and the others build a raft to try and continue their journey leaving their old boat behind.
But remember, John said there was nothing there and the boat had not been disassembled to build a raft. The removal of materials to make a raft would have been very obvious to the forensic investigators. But, the other island theory is very likely. If the engine had been damaged during the storm or some other damage making the boat inoperable would certainly account for the time. These were experienced fisherman and they would have known how to survive out there, at least for a while.
With a little modification, this might work: when they were ready to leave that other island, only Scott and another person were still alive. Sadly, they only reached this place which could not sustain them for long and the boat was inoperable. Scott died first and his friend buried him, then succumbed himself somewhere close to the waterline, and his body washed into the sea in a storm.
This was my first thought is this was not the first island they came to but merely a stop along the way. I don't see how the others could have stayed alone so long. Really strange story

His life story is super sad. He died in a crazy freak accident followed by a heinous crime. Pretty strange. Pretty dark. Fairly mysterious and according to the story……………it could have happened at any time during the week.

The mid 1980s was a technological crutch for someone lost at sea. I've lived in Hawaii and while it's not a bad place to be, getting stranded is easier than you would think. One of my first supervisors had a horrible incident occur in the first few weeks he got to Oahu. He took a jet ski out with him and got out too far. The jet ski ran out of power and he had to swim to a rock. He was stuck on the rock for an entire day until someone picked him up. In this case with Sarah Joe, it's mysterious. The island of Maui and it's sub islands have never been the safest. I've been on the eastern side and it's fairly treacherous. The islands surrounding it are no better. If you look at the islands you can see where there is basically a dip in the depths past Maui and Kuai. From Kuai to Oahu and Maui there isn't that much depth, but after Maui it goes deep...and the trade-winds are dangerous. They use to have a leper colony over there somewhere up until the 60s. Lot's of mystery to all the islands.
The channel between Kauaʻi and Oʻahu isn’t known for its depth and danger, you’re right. However the Kaʻiwi Channel between Molokaʻi and Oʻahu, as well as the Alenuihaha Channel between Hawaiʻi island and Maui are known for their extreme depth and violent currents. Shoot, the wind alone in the Pailolo channel between Maui and Molokaʻi is enough to huli most inexperienced boaters. Perhaps it’s due to the distance between the islands? Oʻahu and Kauaʻi are further apart than the other channels, so maybe there’s a more gradual decline to the sea floor, which would lead to less violent undercurrents. Really curious to see what makes them so different, when in actuality, they’re not but 11,000 sq miles altogether.
@@bostonrailfan2427 I’ve only seen Kalaupapa from the overarching lookout, but we could see a few people down there and a couple Cessna planes taking off. They have their own miniature Airport, and are considered the most isolated population next to Niʻihau.

The story your talking about actually sounds like the one that happened near the cook islands with 3 guys who fled their catholic school, unhappy with their life. They borrowed a fishermen's boat and found a deserted island where they decided to stay, they ended up thriving and even made a court to play on, along with growing plants but after so many year's things went wrong. One broke his leg and died from sepsis. It actually inspired the book "lord of the flies"

Some time later Scott perished inside the ship (I think this explains why the bones weren't bleached). After at least 6 years adrift (so after the survey) the ship washed up on the atoll eventually to be found by a local fisherman (sometime around the 9 year mark) who removed the bones piece by piece in order to lay the man to rest. This explains why other bone fragments were found lying around, accidentally dropped along the way whilst being moved. The person must not have known the significance of the Sarah-Joe. Seeing the book as being likely the only procession this person had they elected to bury them with it out of respect. The book, as others have speculated, was likely created in hopes of signaling a plane.

I've watched so much of his videos, my favorite ones are when he laughs while trying to describe how to torture the like button! Watching his older videos is so weird, but love how much he has grown and turned into this badass story teller.

The use of Chinese ghost money is prevalent in a lot of Asian cultures throughout the Pacific. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_paper . There's a lot of discussion that a Mainland Chinese crew wouldn't have placed a cross at the grave; however, that discussion doesn't take into account that there are more crews out in the Pacific with Chinese or mixed Chinese heritage and customs that would have had knowledge of Christian burial practices. That crew would have buried the body found on a ghost ship with a christian grave marker as well as ghost money to appease the spirit of the deceased. Typically, the money is burned; however, if the crew didn't want to miss out on money days at sea they would have buried the body with a stack of ghost money under the cover of night forgoing the traditional burning of the ghost money which could have drawn attention of the authorities and shortened their fishing money making days. Superstitious captains do carry ghost money with them to burn on their ship to ward of bad weather and bring good fortune if their fishing days aren't productive.

Being from Massachusetts as well John the saddest maritime story I remember was a boat out of Beverly MA. There was a strong north easter that was wiping up a wicked sea. A lobster boat was caught it and sent out an SOS. The weather was so bad the coastguard couldn't go out. The captain and crew of the Beverly based boat was listening on the radio to the conversation. They knew some of the crew on the other boat so they decided they were going to try to rescue them. Sadly the Beverly crew never even made it a mile out before it was capsized and the crew drowned except for one I believe. The boat was raised and towed back to Beverly and she was restored and put up for sale. It never left that mooring it just sat there as you drove over the Kenwood bridge. The other crew was eventually rescued by the coast guard everyone on that boat survived.
Maybe they drifted at sea and he was the last one living in the boat, he eventually died in the boat, eventually drifting to the atol (after the survey). Other boaters later landed on the island, found the body in or around the boat ,and burried him, then going on their way.
You'd think they'd have reported it though. Unless they were "up to something"...even though that is too remote an area for pirating or drug smuggling.

I just threw together my own little crackpot theory that they may have used the storm to fake their deaths. You stated at the beginning that Scott really enjoyed Adventures in Paradise as a child and wanted to live in the South Pacific. So I wonder if Scott Mormon and his buddies decided to live out their own version of the show and just explore, and the hurricane made for a great cover on accident. obviously this is a pretty patchy idea with plenty of unanswered questions, especially regarding the wreck of the Sarah Joe and the missing 4 bodies. But I thought this was an interesting idea that would fit Mormons ideology.
My father was stationed at wake island during Vietnam. He was a master sergeant in the Air Force and he had went all over visited many of the islands around Hawaii. He even took a trip down to the Marshall Islands with a few of his friends towards the late 70s. He said they have been on an island where they were skeletons and World War II Japanese personal items. He said he felt so bad for Monday’s live in an island where they were American or Japanese. My father believes all life mattered whether it was the enemy or a friend. When I was a little kid I stepped on a Bug! My father grabbed me by the arm and pointed down at the squished bug and said you just created the worst day of this animal life I want you to remember this thing was happy but you ended his happiness. That always stuck with me my entire life and I get along with just about everybody. I believe it was because of my father’s lesson……

Many instances of corpses that had been buried even thousands of years earlier, where the bones are still in excellent condition. Not only are they not bleached at all but some are still wrapped in muscle and tissue. Not that strange that his bones appeared to have been buried not long before they were found and yet could be many years old.
Having grown up on Maui, I remember that incident. I suspect that before they landed on That island, they were on a different island further away and decided to make or break it and head out for help. And perhaps there were only 2 left after the huge storm and time and resources had run out. They finally get to the last island after the inspection after the 6 years. I think the tin foil could have been used to be placed on the beach with some stones for writing help or 🆘. The last guy buried Scott with the book and he may have been on the brink of death himself. Perhaps he perished fishing by sharks leaving no trace, or just collapsed in the ocean from dehydration.
The tin foil in book form when hung from a branch, placed on a poll etc (Windy day) works very well as signal and also be used for basic SOS to air and sea. When going bush we would neatly fold a very large sheet down to back pocket size then forget about it as so light.
I agree with everything except that sharks don’t enjoy the taste of human flesh. We’re not on their diet so they’ll only bite once, and that’s just to figure out if we’re a seal or not.

The book would have been a flip book to get the attention of planes and ships. If you flipped through it in the sun it would look like flashes of light, like a signal. Very smart to use the sun to reflect the light like a beacon.

I work as a Law Enforcement US Park Ranger for the National Parks. I worked a season at Assateague Island National Seashore. On that island, there are remnants from a late 19th century shipwreck that occured there, but some days you could see it, and other days you couldn't. The island would perform an action called "turning over'. During storms, high winds etc, the sand would change the surf line dramatically within a few hours. Where land was flat, would now have a huge dune. Where massive dunes laid, were now exposed as a crater. It's a common occurrence. My theory is that the boat has been there the entire time, along with the grave but was simply being buried by the surf and sands during the first survey six years after. The body, being "recently buried" was most likely human error in dating the time of death. The saltwater can slow the decomposition of organic material and in some cases even preserve decaying bodies, thus contributing to the fact that the bones weren't on par with the decomposition timeline. The crew most likely attempted to flee the island when they realized there were no means of survival there, and possibly took a life raft or constructed a makeshift raft to attempt their chance of rescue at sea. Finally, the book was most likely a personal belonging of Scott's that was left with him along with other personal effects.

Then he died, and the rest is your assesment. Your scenario can easily explain why the PIs found his bones in other place.
Also, if we asses that he most possibly had cotton clothes, may be he was hiding the tinfoil on his body, under the clothing. As he was hiding from the sun behind the ship, he passed away and later his clothing will decompose and the "book" just stayed beneath his body.

I have worked for the government and I can tell you that some employees merely fill out the appropriate documents like there was actually a thorough examination of the island when there wasn’t actually anything done at all. Very possible.

My first thought too. Likely, the survey was done badly/not done and the fishermen were there the whole time. How they lived for 9 years and who buried him are harder to answer. My guess is that somebody attempted to fashion a second boat and left the island and perished at sea.

Having a cultural explanation for a phenomenon that doesn’t make sense in the story makes the theory more convincing to me. That book is the best clue, and the most out of place thing about the story. The key fits the lock, so to speak. I’m not sure the rate of decomposition that would occur with a body adrift on the sea, but I’d bet its slower without much bacteria except what lived in the body when he died. If the decomposition timeline fits, this would be more than plausible.
This is a legit theory. My husband is a commercial fisherman and he's told me stories about guys finding bodies and they'll throw them back. If they call someone in it can mean an enormous monetary loss.
I can confirm tin foil paper thing. In Chinese, it is called“冥幣” basically currency for the dead people to use in the after life.

Another interesting detail: At around 1:00 PM, hours before the storm arrived, John Hanchett Sr (Peter's father) noticed a concerningly strong wind coming down the mountains, so he, and several others, went out to find the Sarah Joe to alert them of the impending storm, and have them return to shore. They looked for hours and no one could find them. Eventually, the storm arrived and John's worry for his son turned more into panic. So, John went BACK OUT into the storm and searched for several more hours until he was eventually forced back in. I think this is a very interesting detail because it raises the question of whether the boys were ALREADY GONE before the storm even hit? I know strong winds can wreak havoc on the water, but with the experience these 5 guys had, and the type of boat they had, everyone said they should have still been nearby and fairly easy to find. So, why weren't they?

I will not pay attention much with the "Goverment Survey" fact. They can simply said they done the survey, but actually used the taxpayer money for other thing. The island very unlikely change, so just copy previous survey report. No one will argue anything.

What i tried to said there is more possibilities what happened to the crew if we also take into account the survey is not been done. Maybe Scott arrive there earlier than 6 years after they disappeared, and survived by eating fish and drink animal blood, and live in the boat but still died years later, and poacher/illegal fisherman found the island and saw the boat, try to scavenge items in it. But instead found the body and buried it. Or more extreme thought the poacher killed Scott because they worried been reported to authority but still buried him out of respect. Occam‘s razor answer:
1, The foil paper is called Joss paper, also known as incense papers. These are often burned or buried in various East and southeast Asian funerals.
2, So he was likely buried by east or southeast Asians probably illegally fishing in the area, and therefore not reporting it.
3, The lack of bleaching to his bones would not imply it was a fresh grave. It would imply that he was buried when there was still flesh, or some flesh, on him so he had been buried a long time before his grave was found.
4, I would have to assume that the survey was rushed or done really half a$%#d. Whoever was doing it didn’t even bother going ashore in some cases. So they just missed everything.
It may not have been a sloppy survey of the island. Another commenter says that the sands on the island “turn over” and can make huge dunes or at other times craters. These dunes may have covered up the boat and grave at the time of the survey.

A simple solution is being overlooked, if they tested the age of the bones and subtracted that age from the age he went missing we could tell how long it took for his body to arrive on the island.

Took a look at the boat, fibreglass with foam core, very very small for five grown men, whoever kept that boat pointed into the waves ( away from the island ) during a violent storm and keeping it from getting swamped or rolled was very skilled, but burned all their fuel fighting the storm and found themselves adrift in the ocean currents.
A small boat in the vast ocean is very hard to spot and I believe the survivor(s) saw a plane and tried to signal it, perhaps with the tinfoil on the pages but why cut it down unless there're only scrapes or it kept breaking apart from every attempt to signal someone or it was pre made and thrown onboard in the " unlikely event ", great importance was attached to this and Scott carried it to his death.
Given how small that boat was and how violent the storm was four were washed overboard with no lifejackets, drowned and had fallen to predation leaving the last survivor ( perhaps lashed to and hanging onto the wheel to steer the storm ) to drift across the ocean, currents can carry you one way but wind, storms and waves can carry you another, leaving you doing long lazy circles in the middle of the ocean and in the calms the current will pick you up again and carry you along.
Another survivor lasted 14 months adrift at sea in the same ocean surviving on everything he caught and I believe Scott did the same thing with whatever fishing gear was left onboard, he was still alive as he approached that island but he had one problem, the reef surrounding it. In the picture of the boat the transom is still in one piece so I think Scott had jettisoned the motor to clear the reef and then made his attempt.
In the same picture there are two large gouges on the port gunnel, the boat had rolled on the reef throwing Scott onto the reef with the boat landing on him and perhaps causing an amputation ( the small amount of bones found ) but was able to make it to shore and crawl above the surf line where he eventually died from his wounds.
I believe a local ( one man ) was fishing in that area and if was designated a marine sanctuary or the island off limits, he was there illegally, saw the boat beached and knew a way around the reef and went to investigate and came across the skeletal remains of Scott and, being local, heard nothing about a missing person lost at sea so gave him a "Christian" burial and kept the secret to himself unless he had to answer questions has to why he was there, and eventually dying himself taking the secret to the grave.
As for the boat not being seen a large surf could have carried it up to the tree line where it sat for a long time unseen until another large surf carried it back to the beach, and then back and forth over the years. As for timelines and aging of the bones sometimes things are just a mystery.

I like your idea. The paper was 100% Joss paper. You can look it up, it’s very common. This leads me to believe that the person who buried him was east or southeast Asian. As you say, fishing illegally.
The non-bleaching of bones would not be such a mystery. If it was not a fresh grave. Bones are bleached when they’re left out under the sun for a long period of time exposed. If he was buried, not long after his death, sun bleaching would not have occurred.

according to friends and relatives of the missing crew, the Sarah Joe (and grave) were discovered in 1984 - but this find was not reported by the personnel responsible. It seems the Sarah Joe (and its five crew) got caught in a bad storm, and at least one of the crew made it to the island (possibly after three months at sea). Whether he was alive or not is a matter of conjecture (one theory siggests he tied himself to the boat but died at sea). However, someone found and buried the dead body of Scott Moorman and within the grave was placed what seems to be Chinese ‘joss paper’, or a type of coloured tissue paper containig silver strips (this usually signifies good luck in the next life). It is thought that illegal fishermen from either Taiwan or China found the dead body and buried it with respect and consideration - even building a ‘cross’ out of driftwood.
The paper was a type of emergency sos signal that was made to hang from a branch and when it was hung the foil spots would act like a mirror and send out sos . The chinese idea while it's anyone's guess on if it happened and I can understand the thought behind , it was unlikely imo , since if they were following their culture the money would of have to been burned or they would be haunted . Along with that even a fresh body that's only been out in tropical weather and the sun for a few days would be completely unrecognizable so unless he had his id or he his body was in really good shape so they could identify some of his features why would they have put up a cross . Since they would have been very hard pressed to find out the guys nationality and probably even race depending on the location he died so I would not expect a cross because of that . Lastly his body wasn't completely buried so we know his body was already falling apart when it was buried. While last part is just speculation , the part about the sos is a known emergency trick so it's likely it is a sos signal so it is not complete speculation and is very likely , but no one can be 100% certain .
Yes the Joss Paper fits the exact description, and makes the most sense. It could have even happened after the survey, with the boat being at sea. The body's condition might have been a chance of conditions, and mummification.
@@rickyricardo3551 You are assuming that there are no Christians in Taiwan or that whomever finds the body or bones would only post a grave marker that matched the belief of the dead individual. It makes more sense that they didn't know the ethnicity or religion and either were Christians or assumed that the cross is used to mark all graves from 'western' countries. I would use a cross to mark the grave because a single stick of driftwood wouldn't convey "grave marker' in my opinion.

The "tinfoil" in that book sounds like silver Joss Paper, which is an offering to the dead. It's likely that some Asian fishermen found the body, and gave him as decent a burial as they could before moving on.

I think this is definitely what happened. They starve or get dehydrated on the boat while it is adrift and then die off one by one. Once someone died he'd either get eaten or floated off the boat. Last survivor eventually dies and is adrift for who knows how long (bottled messages can take decades to reach land). The boat then finally reaches land on the atoll with the body on board. The body gets found by a fisherman or an explorer who gives it a burial without reporting it and that is the only explanation I can think of that explains why some bones belonging to this body were found on the shore and not in the grave.

On the surface I'd normally agree. But In These instances creating wildlife sanctuaries typically includes very VERY environmental minded ppl. They're not the type to cut corners on something they think would benefit wildlife esp potentially endangered wildlife. The atoll govt survey possibly illustrates the wisdom behind the saying, "close enough for government work!"
My guess: they all died at sea, each time one of them died they were dropped overboard. Scott was the last to die on the boat. Boat floats around for years until it washes up and grounds after the survey has taken place. Either someone who shouldn’t be there discovers him and does the burial or someone who decides not to report it does the burial. The book is a flip book signalling device that the crew made. The person who does the burial doesn’t know what it is but assumes it has some significance to the deceased and buries it with Scott.
In the story it says the bones are recently buried, not that Scott was recently deceased. If Scott’s body was inside the boat for years the bones wouldn’t get sun bleached.
It might be that scavenging animals moved some of the bones and the person who buried Scott just buried what was left in the boat.
This seems like the most plausible explanation.

@@jollyscarecrow why 6 years? Might have been 6 days or 6 weeks before they all eventually died and the boat floated around before coming to rest on the island after the survey. Wouldn’t be unheard of for a boat to float around for years, being pushed and pulled by the currents.

I think they landed on a similar island, survived for a while, but then ran out the resources on that island. Then they patched up the boat and set sail again. Landed there a little after 6 years later. Scott died of starvation, they eat his body, and whoever is left buries the remaining bones. Hence why there are other bones not in the grave. The remaining make some kind of a raft and leave before the 9 year mark

It’s possible they landed on another island where they stayed for years. Eventually they got their boat sea worthy and tried to get to a more inhabited island but ran ashore at this island. Scott may have died so they buried him and the others build a raft to try and continue their journey leaving their old boat behind.
Bermuda triangle thingy, time warping, other people right boat washed up later someone passing by buried him, book used to signal.

But remember, John said there was nothing there and the boat had not been disassembled to build a raft. The removal of materials to make a raft would have been very obvious to the forensic investigators. But, the other island theory is very likely. If the engine had been damaged during the storm or some other damage making the boat inoperable would certainly account for the time. These were experienced fisherman and they would have known how to survive out there, at least for a while.
With a little modification, this might work: when they were ready to leave that other island, only Scott and another person were still alive. Sadly, they only reached this place which could not sustain them for long and the boat was inoperable. Scott died first and his friend buried him, then succumbed himself somewhere close to the waterline, and his body washed into the sea in a storm.
This was my first thought is this was not the first island they came to but merely a stop along the way. I don't see how the others could have stayed alone so long. Really strange story

The mid 1980s was a technological crutch for someone lost at sea. I've lived in Hawaii and while it's not a bad place to be, getting stranded is easier than you would think. One of my first supervisors had a horrible incident occur in the first few weeks he got to Oahu. He took a jet ski out with him and got out too far. The jet ski ran out of power and he had to swim to a rock. He was stuck on the rock for an entire day until someone picked him up. In this case with Sarah Joe, it's mysterious. The island of Maui and it's sub islands have never been the safest. I've been on the eastern side and it's fairly treacherous. The islands surrounding it are no better. If you look at the islands you can see where there is basically a dip in the depths past Maui and Kuai. From Kuai to Oahu and Maui there isn't that much depth, but after Maui it goes deep...and the trade-winds are dangerous. They use to have a leper colony over there somewhere up until the 60s. Lot's of mystery to all the islands.

However the Kaʻiwi Channel between Molokaʻi and Oʻahu, as well as the Alenuihaha Channel between Hawaiʻi island and Maui are known for their extreme depth and violent currents. Shoot, the wind alone in the Pailolo channel between Maui and Molokaʻi is enough to huli most inexperienced boaters.
Perhaps it’s due to the distance between the islands? Oʻahu and Kauaʻi are further apart than the other channels, so maybe there’s a more gradual decline to the sea floor, which would lead to less violent undercurrents.
Really curious to see what makes them so different, when in actuality, they’re not but 11,000 sq miles altogether.

The story your talking about actually sounds like the one that happened near the cook islands with 3 guys who fled their catholic school, unhappy with their life.
They borrowed a fishermen's boat and found a deserted island where they decided to stay, they ended up thriving and even made a court to play on, along with growing plants but after so many year's things went wrong.
One broke his leg and died from sepsis.

This is truly one of the more bizarre and puzzling stories you've shared with all of us. A complete head-scratcher
My boring theory: the crew likely stayed alive adrift at sea for a while until one by one they eventually perished and were buried at sea, leaving only Scott alive. Some time later Scott perished inside the ship (I think this explains why the bones weren't bleached). After at least 6 years adrift (so after the survey) the ship washed up on the atoll eventually to be found by a local fisherman (sometime around the 9 year mark) who removed the bones piece by piece in order to lay the man to rest. This explains why other bone fragments were found lying around, accidentally dropped along the way whilst being moved. The person must not have known the significance of the Sarah-Joe. Seeing the book as being likely the only procession this person had they elected to bury them with it out of respect. The book, as others have speculated, was likely created in hopes of signaling a plane.

The use of Chinese ghost money is prevalent in a lot of Asian cultures throughout the Pacific. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_paper . There's a lot of discussion that a Mainland Chinese crew wouldn't have placed a cross at the grave; however, that discussion doesn't take into account that there are more crews out in the Pacific with Chinese or mixed Chinese heritage and customs that would have had knowledge of Christian burial practices. That crew would have buried the body found on a ghost ship with a christian grave marker as well as ghost money to appease the spirit of the deceased. Typically, the money is burned; however, if the crew didn't want to miss out on money days at sea they would have buried the body with a stack of ghost money under the cover of night forgoing the traditional burning of the ghost money which could have drawn attention of the authorities and shortened their fishing money making days. Superstitious captains do carry ghost money with them to burn on their ship to ward of bad weather and bring good fortune if their fishing days aren't productive.

Being from Massachusetts as well John the saddest maritime story I remember was a boat out of Beverly MA. There was a strong north easter that was wiping up a wicked sea. A lobster boat was caught it and sent out an SOS. The weather was so bad the coastguard couldn't go out. The captain and crew of the Beverly based boat was listening on the radio to the conversation. They knew some of the crew on the other boat so they decided they were going to try to rescue them. Sadly the Beverly crew never even made it a mile out before it was capsized and the crew drowned except for one I believe. The boat was raised and towed back to Beverly and she was restored and put up for sale. It never left that mooring it just sat there as you drove over the Kenwood bridge. The other crew was eventually rescued by the coast guard everyone on that boat survived.

Maybe they drifted at sea and he was the last one living in the boat, he eventually died in the boat, eventually drifting to the atol (after the survey). Other boaters later landed on the island, found the body in or around the boat ,and burried him, then going on their way.
Even then by that time the boat would have either found land or descaled just enough in many storms to sink to the bottom of the ocean
You'd think they'd have reported it though.
Unless they were "up to something"...even though that is too remote an area for pirating or drug smuggling.

I just threw together my own little crackpot theory that they may have used the storm to fake their deaths. You stated at the beginning that Scott really enjoyed Adventures in Paradise as a child and wanted to live in the South Pacific. So I wonder if Scott Mormon and his buddies decided to live out their own version of the show and just explore, and the hurricane made for a great cover on accident. obviously this is a pretty patchy idea with plenty of unanswered questions, especially regarding the wreck of the Sarah Joe and the missing 4 bodies. But I thought this was an interesting idea that would fit Mormons ideology.
My father was stationed at wake island during Vietnam. He was a master sergeant in the Air Force and he had went all over visited many of the islands around Hawaii. He even took a trip down to the Marshall Islands with a few of his friends towards the late 70s. He said they have been on an island where they were skeletons and World War II Japanese personal items. He said he felt so bad for Monday’s live in an island where they were American or Japanese. My father believes all life mattered whether it was the enemy or a friend. When I was a little kid I stepped on a Bug! My father grabbed me by the arm and pointed down at the squished bug and said you just created the worst day of this animal life I want you to remember this thing was happy but you ended his happiness. That always stuck with me my entire life and I get along with just about everybody. I believe it was because of my father’s lesson……

Many instances of corpses that had been buried even thousands of years earlier, where the bones are still in excellent condition. Not only are they not bleached at all but some are still wrapped in muscle and tissue. Not that strange that his bones appeared to have been buried not long before they were found and yet could be many years old.

Having grown up on Maui, I remember that incident. I suspect that before they landed on That island, they were on a different island further away and decided to make or break it and head out for help. And perhaps there were only 2 left after the huge storm and time and resources had run out. They finally get to the last island after the inspection after the 6 years. I think the tin foil could have been used to be placed on the beach with some stones for writing help or 🆘. The last guy buried Scott with the book and he may have been on the brink of death himself. Perhaps he perished fishing by sharks leaving no trace, or just collapsed in the ocean from dehydration.
I agree. I feel like this theory makes the most sense.
The tin foil in book form when hung from a branch, placed on a poll etc (Windy day) works very well as signal and also be used for basic SOS to air and sea. When going bush we would neatly fold a very large sheet down to back pocket size then forget about it as so light.

I agree with everything except that sharks don’t enjoy the taste of human flesh. We’re not on their diet so they’ll only bite once, and that’s just to figure out if we’re a seal or not.
