Holiday/Christmas Cactus: Propagation, Planting and Easy Care Tips 🪴

  • Hi everyone,
    I hope you are all doing well & keeping safe!
    My name is Tracy and I garden in Zone 4/5 in Toronto, Canada.
    You are watching my latest video about Christmas Cactus: Propagation, Planting and Care filmed on December 5, 2020. In this video, I will share with you how I propagate new Christmas Cactus plants from cuttings as well as how I care for them after planting.
    I hope this video brings you some joy and inspiration to start making some more new Christmas Cactus plants in your homes. Now that you know how easy it is to care for Christmas cactus plants, perhaps it will inspire you to buy a new plant to enjoy it in your own homes (if you don't have one already). Thank you so kindly for taking some of your precious time to watch my video. Take care & stay safe!
    Ps. For those of you that are more “plant” conscientious - these are also known as “Holiday Cactus” or “Thanksgiving Cactus” as they do have more pointy leaves. The “Christmas or Easter Cactus” have sort of scalloped-shaped leaves. However, all growers and garden nurseries in my area are all selling these during Christmas season and calling them “Christmas Cactus”. Hopefully that clears the air regarding why I call these Christmas Cactus. 🧐😊
    Happy (in-door) gardening & see you next time!

    Thank you so much for all this information! I want to propagate from my grandmas Christmas cactus, given to her by my grandpa who passed away. I feel like this video made me very confident to do this & not feel like I’ll mess up or kill the cuttings. Thank you so much!
    Also, your croton is GORGEOUS!!!

    Really comprehensive, detailed presentation. Mine have struggled and now I know why. I would not have guessed these don't like sunlight, but that seems to be the reason for the struggles and also their pots were too big. Thank you.

      Thank you so much 😊 for watching and I’m glad you’ve found the video informative. My plants love the north facing windows....and just now the cacti also finished blooming over my kitchen sinks as well! This was very odd because they don’t usually bloom end of May - early June! The blooms were certainly welcomed but sometimes you just cannot explain why a plant behave the way they do. 💚🪴🙏🌸

    🏠 This was such a warm display of the most knowledge and care Instructions I have watched .
    Thank you for your time ❤. I had hoped for this .
    I received a Chritmas cactus from my sister Mary just before the holidays . It's had blooms all over it . What a gift ❤
    It was placed in a "pretty teapot on a saucer " . So Cute 🩷
    It's such a Beautiful gift . Tiny rich pink buds just ready to burst .
    A few began to open just like yours and a few days later , the new buds and those not opened yet began to fall off.
    Location,Location, Location . Less drafts, Temp. Changes I'm hoping will help thanks to you 🩷.
    It will crush me to lose it and dissappoint my sister too . This was such a lovely gesture. I find it hard to please tropical type plants with forced heat and drafty floors 🏠.

    Hi Tracy! Lovely & very informative video. I had 4 of those cactus plants (bought them at Shop Rite) they were very beautiful & they always sell them from $2.99-$3.98...2 yrs ago when i bought them with blooms, that was it, never bloomed again, i tried everything (except changing the pots) gave away 2 & just bought 4 (i really love the blooms and cant wait to see them push out...so i replace often)
    **You are great with them, i have a ton of other plants so i dont pay much attention to my cactus, i will watch your video repeatedly till i get the hang of caring for them. (Dont like to care for high maintenance plants) so i was relieved when u mentioned not putting them in a dark place. I've learned a lot about plants over the years since i started collecting them in 2007, no matter what info i read or find on the internet (Personal experience is better in most cases. God is Amazing, his creation is astounding!! He loves us immensely & gave us so much to enjoy. Blessings, peace and wellness to you & Loved ones. "John 3:16-18" 🙏💖

      Thank you 😊 and all you need is to place the plants near a north facing window and they will bloom for you. North facing windows have indirect light and they bloom twice a year for me.
      Ps. If you have a lot of sun, just move them away from the window (move the plants away - 6ft or so and they will bloom in 4-6 weeks time).
      All the best 💚🙏💚

    Hi Tracy, perfect timing with this video, I have some broken pieces that need to be propogated, thankyou, I especially appreciated that you showed us your 'no nonsense' approach to planting. Your christmas tree is outstanding! I noticed the hydrangeas on the coffee table, they look to be a burgundy colour, do you remember which bush you cut them from? Best wishes from Bradford.

    • @TracysHomeGarden
      @TracysHomeGarden  3 года назад +1

      Hi Pauline,
      The dried hydrangea panicles are from my Vanilla Strawberry. It was a bright pink-red, and it is now burgundy due to the absorption of the carbon dioxide that is in the air of our micro-climate - making the environment a little acidic. How deep the burgundy will depend on your home environment. Thank you Pauline & keep safe! 🙏.
      Ps. I’m always looking easy ways to care for plants. That way I will have more time to enjoy them. So good of you to notice that! 🥰

    Where can I find Christmas Catus in January. I have been looking since after Christmas. No one had them where I live. I want to propagate a lot of them for my church for next year. I just love the red and white that you put together it is absolutely gorgeous.

      I’m so sorry to hear this as the plants are very common in our country. They are also easy to propagate ton make more plants. Hope you find them. 💚

      Hi Charlotte,
      The white, pink (fuschia) and red Christmas cacti are readily available in our area. Some of the other shades of apricot, peach 🍑 pink and orange are not as common for us. Hope you can find a local nursery that sells them. 💚💚💚

    That was really interesting Tracy - and what a lovely hall and display of plants you have at the front door. Do you know how they would grow if you only put one cutting in the pot? Do you think it would 'bulk up' and become a 'full' multi-stemmed plant?

    • @TracysHomeGarden
      @TracysHomeGarden  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Paul!
      One cutting will definitely “bulk-up” into multi stems but the heavy weight will make it flop onto its side so I would recommend at least 3 cuttings to have a rounder and fuller look. Thank you for watching & keep safe!

    My climate allows me to grow them outdoors year round. From experience, they bloom at around christmas because their flowering is triggered by the short days of winter. That is the reason why you often hear the advice to give them some hours of darkness throughout the summer. This is how you can make them bloom off-season.

    • @TracysHomeGarden
      @TracysHomeGarden  Год назад

      I agree about the shorter day and longer nights required for blooming. In our northern climates, having them next to North and East windows are most suitable for blooming.
