  • Talking bout my Schlumbergera Truncata and discussing the common relatives to it, the Christmas cactus and Easter cactus. I'm going over how i care for mine and get them to rebloom. These easy to grow plants are a tropical cactus that i care for in similar manner to most of my succulents.

      A sunny window near your kitchen sink? Are you winters cool and humid like mine? Canadas west coast. I was gifted a giant Christmas cactus this summer - I’m excited and hopeful to see her bloom but nothing yet and no idea of the colour as it had never bloomed for the previous owner. My smaller Easter cactus has just opened her first bloom (magenta)!

    I'm late to the party ! 😄 Just watched this video today. The thumbnail grabbed my attention. My gosh! I don't know that I've ever seen a Christmas cactus so thoroughly covered in both blooms & buds as that magenta one ! WOW. It is an absolute stunner !! Obviously this guy has the knack !
    One of my aunts gave me a start from her huge Christmas cactus back in 1979. Since then we've moved 3 times....plus experienced the Ice Storm of 2004 which affected MOST of Ohio (where we live), knocking out power. We were w/out power for over a week. It had a devastating effect on my houseplants, of course.
    Well, I still have some of the Christmas cactus from my aunt.....it's been hangin' in there in a little 3" clay pot.....& has even put out flowers some times. Recently, I transplanted it to a slightly larger pot, fresh soil, sprinkled worm castings on top of the soil. Gave it a little dose of Super Thrive. I can see some bright green leaves among the dull green ones....so there is definitely hope ! And it's enjoying a "hospital stay" near a Grow Light.
    If anyone has any other tips to nurse this plant back to robust health & a nice, big size, please share.

    That large one is very beautiful! ❤ I had a cutting live in a coffe mug of nothing but water for 5 or 6 YEARS! LOL! I finally potted it with another and it bloomed the prettiest pale peach/off white color 2 years later.
    I keep mine in an east-facing bay window and close the curtain around it at night. It does extremely well there. I give it all-purpose miracle grow every 2 or 3 months and water it with well water every week and a half or so. I let it dry out completely but water more when it's in bloom. Last year it was full of blooms from late October through January!! It was amazing! Cold weather was late this year and I was afraid it was going to affect my blooms but luckily, as of last week it is full of buds. I'm so excited to cross-pollinate so I can harvest seeds late next year. Thanks for sharing your beautiful cactus! 😊

    Looking good!!! I recently learned how to identify Thanksgiving Cactus vs Christmas Cactus and found out all my7 pots are all Thanksgiving cactus!!! Too funny!!! I think I have red, pink and white blooms, will see If I can get them to bloom. I get cool 50 degree weather for past two months and wonder what to do to reduce lights because I dont see any buds at all. I dont want to bring plants indoors and out all he time. They are easy to grow, harder to get a ton of blooms. Thanks.

    Wow - that pink one is a real beauty with the one color. I leave mine outdoors all year long on a somewhat lightly shaded area, on planter shelves. I basically ignore them, and they are still doing fine after all these years from when they were babies. They really are easy to grow and propagate. I have one where the leaves are reddish-greenish in color, that hasn't been exposed to direct sunlight, go figure, lol. However, I do use an orchid fertilizer which helps them to constantly bloom starting in August through December, another strange one, lol. I really enjoy the beauty in these plants, I call mine cactus orchids, lol!!!

    I’ve had mine for about 5 years! He’s a thanksgiving cactus and in bloom right now. I’m in the Midwest so mine stays outside all summer and then comes in for the winter. Right before the first frost it gets cold enough to trigger budding and then when I bring it in the buds continue to grow well. Mine has white blooms.

    Can you make them bloom any other time of year? I just missed theses cool methods.
    Cool tip to remember various kinds of cacti.
    🌵 *Easter cacti* leaves are round. Like Easter eggs.
    🌵 *Thanksgiving cacti* leaves have sharp edges. Like the knife that cuts your turkey.
    🌵 *Christmas cacti* leaves have tear drop edges. Like our tears of joy at Christmas. Or sad tears if we celebrated alone like many people did in 2020.

    I live in Tucson but have a huge mesquite tree with a bench around it. I keep my christmas cactuses on this bench so they get dappled light. I have other succulents and plants around them, including an amaryllis that blooms every year around Easter time. It's not an Easter Lily but a true amaryllis. I also have several varieties of jasmine, so there are many plants that give himidity to the christmas. I don't do anything to force the bloom, i just let the natural shortening of light trigger bloom. But i have found that i need to let the buds develop to about 1/3 inch before i bring them in or the smallest buds will drop. My house is usually cool, i only use space heaters and dont have them close to the plants. Now i have less humidity inside than outside but i have placed a couple of poinsettias next to the cactus. My plants bloom and bloom every year so im reluctant to change anything.

The sad part is that the flowers last only 4 days and look ugly as they hang onto the leaf. Temp is between 65-74. I just wish that they can last longer..My orchids last months under the same conditions.

    Stumbled on your video when I got concerns about my beloved schum..umm Xmas cactus. .lolol I got him (Yes it's a he..he's my peacock of my cactus-succulents) It's August here in Missouri and we're getting a mix of cool and heat...my poor fella is confused I think...and since I've had him in the same pot and same soil he was purchased in for about 4 years..I'm thinking it maybe time for a repot with fresh soil and nicer pot...this current one is getting old and cracking. Mine is the magenta and blooms just as beautiful as yours..always gives me such a show.
    I've become concerned because he's looking a little limp and the segments are looking a little wrinkled...I'm gave it a good watering and I've fertilized in the past couple weeks but things are not improving...so I'm thinking a new pot and soil might be the trick..hopefully be a use I'll be devestated to loose this baby. I wish I could send you a picture or video of it so you could give me tips if you think there's more I could do. Yeah I know it's late to be repot...but I've done crazy things with this guy and he just keeps on giving..lolol..he might need a good haircut too..he's getting long...I think he's gorgeous but the stems that are underneath are the ones having the most issues...
    Anyway..I tend to talk in circles and everywhere. .maybe that's what I liked about your videos. .I could follow perfectly..lolol...you have yet another subsriber..hope that makes you smile!! Thank you for your lovely video and great information.

      Hello! A repot would most likely help it out a lot, i tend to wait a long time (too long) for repotting, so i get where you're coming from there. Is there any discoloration? I'm also in missouri (STL) and around this time of year i usually have to move mine into a little bit more morning sun, just enough to give it a slight purple tinge to the outside of the foliage. The temps have been all over the place, mine even started to bud a little bit, which has never happened in august before. I guess those cool nights we had a couple weeks ago tricked it into thinking fall was here. Are you on instagram? That's the easiest way to share/send pictures and videos. Mine is same as on here, TropicalPlantParty :)

      Tropical Plant Party Well hello neighbor!! Im only about 45 minutes from St. Louis..Ofallon to be exact. Yes I'm on Instagram. .so I definitely could share some pics there. There is some reddish purple going on on the ends...it sits out on my patio which has a roof over it ...it actually sits up against the apartment wall ..so it's not getting the boiling hot sun on it..it does get morning sun.
      I bought more cactus potting soil along with orchid bark to mix in and I'm going to attempt to repot today.
      I bought this at a garage sale and I honestly think the person had then planted outside and just dug them up and put in a pot..the dirt isn't your usual potting soil so I'm hoping it won't shock it putting it in the better soil for these guys. We shall see...I maybe crying on your youtube doorstep..lolol

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  6 лет назад

      You're even closer than that, I'm about 10 minutes from Chesterfield Valley... Small World! When soil gets really old, it can compress into basically mud, so that may have happened with yours... or there are some people that just use topsoil as potting soil :/ Keep me posted, fingers crossed everything goes well for you! It sounds like you're taking great care of the plant. :)

    • @veaperl8795
      @veaperl8795 6 лет назад

      Tropical Plant Party I think your right on the compressed top soil ..I really think that was it. I managed to get 2 smaller pots made from the healthy plump pieces...do you think there's any hope of getting anything from the thinner wrinkle pieces...I swear there's a huge pile left and I'm just cringing thinking of having to throw them out...but just how many magenta colored ones do I need?? I have no wish to be a hoarder..lolol I would love to get some other colors. .I don't think I've seen the white except yours.

    I have two different colored Christmas cactus. They both started blooming in November and one still has one bloom on it and it's June 5th and had a dozen blooms a week ago! I have no idea why it has continued to bloom for over 6 months this time around. I'm not doing anything different with them than I have always done and in the past they have been done blooming by February at the latest.

    I got two pots of these cactus and I was so excited because the blooms were gorgeous but then all of the sudden the buds fell off! It happened right after I watered them for the first time 😭
    Seeing as it's mid November, can I get them to bloom again? Or should i just be patient and wait til next year?

      Hello Patricia! General rule with these guys is to stop fertilizing them when the dark & cool periods increase(bloom encouraging time) and to resume when the flowers fall and new growth appears. It should be just fine as it is. :) If you are noticing it is seeming weak or needs iron than you could try and fertilize with a weak dilution of fertilizer. With these cactus you want to do a 50% dilution during their growing season, so maybe 1/3 to even 1/4 would be ok, but it could encourage the plant to move back into vegetative growth and make it drop the flower buds. ...I don't know for sure about that, just speculating based on their growing habits.

    • @sandrastreifel6452
      @sandrastreifel6452 4 года назад

      LifeofDOugh: It probably needs more humidity. You could use a pebble tray underneath it, or beside it, with water in it to evaporate.
