What a gorgeous flowering cactus!Thank you so much for your wonderful information. Turns out I bought two at the same time and one is a Thanksgiving cactus, the other a Christmas cactus. The Thanksgiving one never bloomed, rather the tips of the leaves are a reddish color, no bloom, the Christmas one appears to have little buds at the end of the leaves sprouting. Keeping my fingers crossed. I live in Florida so I keep mine inside facing a window with indirect bright but low light. My patio is way too hot and sunny. Im covering them at night for now, but I'm going to follow your advice. Will keep you posted. Temperature here is 65 degrees at night. I have been seeking advice online for this type of plant, and by far you are the best! Thank you so much!
It's so funny. It's like you were telling the story of my Thanksgiving cactus! Bought it last year at the grocery store. Buds fell off. This year put it outside on the covered porch all summer. Fed it. Even before I brought it inside it was already forming little flower buds. Mine are white. Brought it inside before the nights dipped down. Today is Halloween and it's in full bloom. It bloomed naturally. Like you said I don't care when it blooms -- just so it blooms! Thank you for the video.
Hi Wanda! I was so tempted to buy a tiny Easter cactus yesterday from the nursery. And now I’m wishing I did. Enjoy your little plant babies and Happy Spring!
i just bought a white thanksgiving cactus from a seller on facebook. i hope it would bloom line yours. not so much grows a thanksgiving cactus from my country. Your video is very informative. keep making videos, this is very helpful. thank you :)
Lovely plant!! I’m going to try this ASAP. My son planted an orange seed from his lunch 10 years ago and we have a beautiful tree in our living room. It totally thrives outside during summer then I have to bring it in for winter and hold my breath as the leaves start to fall. This winter I started spritzing it with water. That seems to help a bit. But I could really use some great advice on how to keep this happy inside.
Wow!! I’d say you’re doing better than you think. Keeping a citrus plant going for 10 years is something to be proud of! Most plants lose their leaves as a response to lack of light, especially when they spend months outside. They go from ideal light conditions to anything but indoors. Give it your brightest window in the winter, some humidity and hope for the best.
@@heatherhereshegrows Well thank you for the pat on the back, that citrus plant is like a family member now. We all root for it! Please do you have some ideas for adding humidity. I got the one about rocks with water in a tray. What about putting a small humidifier near it? Thoughts
Just beautiful, mine I left it outside till oct as well but then I guess I gave it to much water as I watered from the top should I be watering from the bottom ,I changed my potting soil and put m6 catus in new soil so hop it doesn’t die ,but great tips so I’ll get a tray and water from the bottom with some rocks on the tray as well
Hi Val! What color are your flowers? I still water it from the top, the tray of pebbles and water is just to provide humidity and prevent the buds from falling off as a result of the dry air. I tend to let the soil dry out pretty well before I water any of my houseplants. That way I avoid overwatering and killing them. Good luck and thanks so much for watching!
What a beautiful cactus I'm trying to grow one iv listened carefully to your video and you recommend using soul for succulents. Ii have a few I'm trying to propagate they're not too high but rooted I have them in miracle grow.the proof is in the pudding and your plant is very happy. I really want to see mine do as well thank you for sharing your knowledge .iv subacribed
Love the video. I put my Thanksgiving cactus out in full sun, thought the new reddish leaves were healthy! Transferred it to under canopy now. Will the new leaves recover? Will it even bloom now that it's "natural"?
Hi May I ask what state what zoom you live in do you have moist temperature and snow there? I live in Las Vegas Nevada desert state ,summer is super hot here, can my let flowers bloom like yours too?
How is it doing this year? I'm hoping I can get mine bushy like that with such pretty blooms. I've been trying to find a plant with blooms that color but I can only find darker purplish ones ones a lot of white in the center of the petals.
Hi Brandi! It’s reaching the end of its flowering but the foliage is even fuller than last year. I’ve seen this color at the grocery store, which is where I bought mine a few years ago. They grow fast!
I have to ask .. is there a hole in the bottom of the pot its in, to absorb the water, or does the water just help to give moisture otherwise? May sound silly, but I really don't know! Your Thanksgiving cactus is truly gorgeous! Thanks
Hi, I have two holiday cactus planters in my garden. I got them in October of 2020 and they're still blooming. Not sure why they call them holiday cactus. I'm a new gardener. I started in May of 2020. I have a lot to learn. I watched the video you did for Erin (Impatient Gardener) and I'm going to try and grow a fig tree. I love figs. I don't think I'll need to move it in and out of a garage since I live in Los Angeles.
Hello! Wow, blooming since October? I wish mine did! Holiday cactus is the catch-all term for the three cactuses - Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The fig is an e cells that plant for beginners. It’s easy and very forgiving. I’m doing an update on my channel this weekend on Spring fig care if you’re interested. You shouldn’t have to bring your fig indoors for winter, matter of fact, you might consider just planting it in the ground to eliminate that step altogether. I’m all about less work! Happy gardening and please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions!
I have one on a bright shady balcony and it blooms like nuts in winter (though it only gets down to 10 celcius - 58 F here). I think they just like to be left alone, though obviously people in cold climates have to bring them inside, and that can cause problems.
@@heatherhereshegrows Yes. I'm lucky that my town Sydney has a similar climate to Rio. We don't call them holiday cactus here, but Zygos (as we say) are a welcome splash of colour from May-August
Hi, I'm Trish from South Africa... when transplanting and you put 2 colours in a pot... like a pink and a white, do they cross pollinate, so that the white takes on some of the pink colour? Thanks
Good question! For that to happen, pollen would have to be moved by pollinators from the male part of a plant to the female part of another. I grow mine as a houseplant, keeping it outside during the summer and then bringing it inside in the fall where it flowers sometime in early November. I think this would be an ideal situation to grow two varieties together as it eliminates the possibility of pollinators mixing the two.
Thanks so much for this!! I’ve honestly gone through SO MANY Christmas Cactus care vids and shorts (like 20-30 vids lol) and yours has been by far the most informative and clear! I’ve subscribed :) May I just ask for some advice? My Thanksgiving cactus (correct ID thanks to this vid) was budding beautifully in one spot, which I moved it from due to needing the space for propagating plants. Now some of the huge flowers have bloomed but they’re wilting and very weak only a week or two after blooming? I moved it again into a much brighter spot thinking the flowers needed the light as they were getting so weak. Should I put it back in the original spot I had it when it started budding? Thank you ❤
Hi Daisy! Unfortunately, the flowers don’t last as long as we’d like and if they’re looking gorgeous for a week and then wither, I’d say that’s pretty good. I’d just avoid direct sun in the plant while in flower. A bright window with indirect light should be ok.
Hi Liane, thank you! As far as the light in the house, I just left the plant in the coffee table where it gets bright indirect light from the south-facing windows.
Gorgeous and healthy. I've been wanting a Christmas cactus for a while never heard Thanksgiving cactus. Grabbed one a few days ago and like yours, mine was labeled incorrectly, so, I have a Thankagiving Cactus, but, I don't mind. Love that pot too, where did you purchase it from, if you don't mind sharing.

I’m not sure how much of a temp change you have from day to night but it’s probably more than it is in the summer months. Also, zygocactus are short-day plants and form flower buds when day length is less than 12 hours. So the combo of cooler nights and shorter days may be just what you need to get your plant flowering. Do keep me posted! I’d love to know how it goes for you in Florida.
@@heatherhereshegrows Thanks for your reply. I have moved them in from the garage into the house where it is at least 10 degrees cooler and pull the blinds closed at about 5 pm in a room that is in darkness until morning. Hopefully they will bloom, maybe later than usual.

Hi Maya, thank you! I just wish it was in bloom longer.
I’m going to try putting mine outside this summer. I’ll repot them first😊
Mine are in a shady spot on my patio for the summer and love it. They grow like crazy!
Useing the chilly weather to bring it in bloom is the best if you have it
Gorgeous plant and great advice.
Thank you! The flowers are long gone now but the plant gets prettier and prettier every year.

The air is so dry indoors in the winter that the buds want to fall off unless we provide a little humidity.

They probably label the leftover Thanksgiving cactus 🌵 as the Christmas Cactus, for the upcoming holiday.
Where do you live?
I’m in the southwest subs of Chicago.
Humidity with rocks don't work
Light misting works better, she exaggerates
