Sharing my garden and everything I've learned from it with the hope that it will inspire you to get your hands dirty. Here you'll find the ups and downs of gardening in a zone 5b, Chicago-area climate. From a different zone? No worries. The ideas and practices are pretty universal. While no longer active, I rely on my master gardener training to create and maintain a healthy garden. Let's grow together!
Killing Budworms on Petunias, Nicotiana and Geraniums | Here She Grows
Just as my summer garden reaches its peak, budworms descend on my petunias, geraniums and nicotiana. Late July/early August is primetime for these destructive little caterpillars. But there's a simple fix and it involves Bt or Bacillus thuringiensis and a watchful eye. In the video, I show you what to look for as well as what these little critters look like "in the wild" LOL.

I'm so excited about my side yard garden and am thrilled to share it with you! An often overlooked space, the side yard garden has become a place for pollinators and deer. I've never had deer! But when you have the woods right across the street and build a smorgasbord up to the sidewalk, their arrival is inevitable. So I'm learning about deer repellant now! Hardy Geraniums: How to Get a Rebloom ✂️

My hardy geraniums bloomed in late May and early June and I'm finally getting around to cutting them back. Doing so sends a message to these tough perennials that I don't want seeds, I want flowers. In a matter of weeks, my hardy geraniums will flush out new growth and in just a few weeks more, an encore of fresh flowers. Here's how to do it... Hi there! At the time of this video, the National Weather Service confirmed 19 and counting EF0-EF1 tornadoes had touched down in the Chicago area the evening of July 15. Estimating a Bulk Order of Mulch WITHOUT a Tape Measure | Here She Grows
Просмотров 27828 дней назад
For a new garden, mulching is a necessity. It suppress weeds, cools the soil and prevents water evaporation. But after the first year, the garden is on it's own and won't see another two- to three-inch layer of mulch for the rest of it's life. Without mulch, weeds win every time. Once weed seeds see sunlight, it's go time and they'll outcompete any perennial. So it's mulch time for my new sidey...
Aruncus: A Pollinator-Friendly Perennial for Dry Shade
Просмотров 420Месяц назад
Gardening in dry shade is challenging! Which is why I wholeheartedly vouch for Aruncus, or goatsbeard, and its ability to shrug off drought, attract pollinators and make the most of a very dry situation in my garden. That's exactly what it's done for four years and counting in my dry shade garden! And with no drip irrigation! That's really saying something. Its foliage looks incredibly similar ...

WOW! Absolutely stunning gardens.
I love your selection! You space your plants so far apart. I have them a little one a hands length apart to cover the ground. I don’t have to worry about mulching anymore and the spots that are bare I plant creeping phlox and thyme.
May I ask how you get to trial plants from companies like Proven Winners?
Beautiful garden! I love that you have variety of flowers. Thanks for sharing 👏💐🌺
I have a terrible infestation of ugly caterpillars! I have never had them as bad as this year! My beautiful petunias and calibrachoa’s look awful now😣and my bottle of bt was nearly empty when I tried to spray😖
Very timely. My petunias lost all their flowers overnight. The sprayer look handy. I find it difficult to hand spray more than one plant. Your garden is so lovely.
Mine too! So sad😞
@@kturula7017 Thank you! I have arthritis in my hands and this sprayer makes life easier. No constant squeezing.
👋 Heather 😊 If I have to come back in this world again, I'm coming back as You! Thanks for info. That dog always has a lot to bark about ☺️ Its thick in humidity again this morning. Hard for my breathing! Enjoy your day! ❤
@@ginafriend1690 Gina, you are the kindest and you’ve been with me here on this channel since the early days. You have no idea what your comments and encouragement have meant. Thank you so much!!!

Your garden is absolutely beautiful!!! I live in the south, zone 8 I have some of the same flowers. I'm just getting started had to rebuild my home. You giving me such great ideas can't wait to see more of your videos I love flowers too. 🙃🙃💚💚💚💚💯💯💯🙃🙃
@@chyinarr Hi there and welcome! A blank slate is exciting. So glad you joined me here!
Hi Heather! I just discovered your RUclips channel for the first time today. So it took me forever to watch your video because I kept having to pause in order to write down the names of all your beautiful plants. Where do you purchase most of your plants? Do you order many online? I also wanted to tell you I love the name of your RUclips channel. Another favorite name similar to yours on RUclips is How’s it Growing? She has a lovely garden as well🪻🌺🌼
@@Jen-u9r Hi Jen! Thanks so much for joining me here! I know Laura from How’s It Growing. She’s wonderful! I find a lot of great stuff a Sunrise Greenhouse in Grant Park, IL. They’re my favorite. But I also shop Home Depot and Lowe’s, as well as small nurseries in the area.
Beautiful garden 🌿🌺 How do you keep weeds out of your gardens?
Hi there! Mulch is the secret to weed suppression in my new sideyard this year but I plant tighter than recommended so plants knit together faster. They’ll shade out the soil and prevent seeds from germinating. I also pull them regularly following rain storms.
@@heatherhereshegrowsgreat, thanks
Edible rose - wow! That's new to me. I'll have to research since you say there are many edible flowers. You've accumulated beautiful, interesting plants. Thank you.
@@tamasrobby6872 Hello! All roses are edible. The one I mention in the video was bred specifically for culinary uses. Plant breeders are amazing!
What a great border. LOOOVE the dahlia hedge!
@@dianetemple4243 Thanks Diane!
I love your garden. Where did you purchased the zinnia seeds,? I love that they are not too tall. I planted some zinnia that labeled 12 to 18 inches, but it's 3 feet tall now.
@@zuaxiong That’s happened to me too. I got the Magellan zinnias from either Park or Select Seeds.
I love it all!
@@marybethgardener111 Thanks Marybeth!
My multi-stem serviceberry has been doing nothing but losing branches too. I’m considering evicting it.
I feel your pain! It’s painfully slow and dying more every year.
This is amazing 😮❤ I m not being mean , slow down , you cannot take in this beauty 💖 this fast 👍
Thanks for sharing this amazing tour ❤
Agreed! Thank you. 😊
It’s beautiful! I kept taking notes on plants to add! How wide is this space?
Hello! The width of the bed changes. The widest part along the sidewalk is about 18 feet. The narrowest area is about 8 feet.
It looks fantastic! ❤ Can you point me to your video where harvested your rutabaga?
Thank you! Here’s the link…ruclips.net/video/nO9O-PCuzHs/видео.htmlsi=5QZYG_vjeb-40YwU
That "red spike" is Awesome! 🙌 Maybe a couple of Arborvitae Tater Tots in that Honorine Jobert area and mix in some Skyward Pink Veronica's, if enough variation between heights together, would be nice to fill in with color. But ... not like you don't have Arborvitaes already growing there 🤷♀️ plus You'll figure it out anyway! Very nice tour explained on side garden, Heather. Looks fantastic, and so do you! 🥰
@@ginafriend1690 Oooooo! You definitely know what I like! Thanks Gina!
Just discovered your channel. So scary! I can’t imagine!!! Glad that you are safe and okay. Take care and keep safe 🙏🏼
Hi Diane! Thank you for the kind words. I hope to never experience that again.
What nursery did you get sting from? I can’t find in our area. (I’m in Chicagoland too)
Hello! Proven Winners sent it to me but you could also try buying it from them online. My guess is that it will be more widely available next year.
I noticed that part of the new garden bed borders the sidewalk. Do you have problems with dogs peeing on the plants? I'm trying to find some plants that can withstand dog urine. Any suggestions?
I’ve caught a few people walking their dogs into the bed to pee. Very frustrating and disrespectful IMO. So far, American Goldrush rudbeckia, Millenium Allium and Neon sedum are holding their own despite the golden shower. 😂
@@heatherhereshegrows Thanks. I'll look into those.
Beautiful side garden! Do you dig out your dahlias every year or just leave them in the ground. The ones that stay short are so pretty and would do well in the front of my landscape. Everything looks good after the storms! I lost power for 12 hours and my basement flooded but it could have been worse.
Hi Kathy! Funny you ask about the dahlias. I’m leaning toward not digging them all up this year. There are just a few that I will dig.
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear about your flooding. I hope there wasn’t too much damage. Those storms were wicked!
WOW! Looks great. I've taken notes LOL -- I want to add a lot of those plants .... the Heliopsis Bleeding Hearts, the small Joe Pye Weed, the pink veronica, the vanity verbena .... thanks for the tour!
@@darleneoldakowski4966 Hi Darlene! Glad I could give some inspiration. Isn’t that Bleeding Hearts heliopsis gorgeous?
So…did you say that Joe Pye is a dwarf? Very interesting!! Beautiful garden - thanks for all the info. Greetings from Minneapolis area
@@stockinettestitchHi there! Yes, Euphoria Ruby grows approx. 2’-2.5’ tall and wide.
@@heatherhereshegrows Hello! I just finished your video and started a new note page with “all of the things”. 🤭 The Veronica Skyward Pink is going to have to replace my current one. I love how sturdy and “together” it looks. That Joe Pye will definitely end up somewhere in my yard. Last week my daughter and I went on a garden tour in our town and there was one pollinator friendly yard where the front yard was completely native species with little paths through everything and it was really fun. But yeah, the Joe Pye was so tall; I mean you were thinking you’re in Vietnam or some thing! It was crazy junglelike - yours is a good compromise. Thanks for the response. Subbed. PS: Do you know anything about building a berm? Any videos on that? I want to but I chicken out when it comes to new things.
Good info! And oh my, you are absolutely beautiful! Good day to you, Magnolia, 🌞 Texas.
Where did you buy these from online?

@@heatherhereshegrowsawe, dam critters! 🔫😄 I just went out to a farm in DeKalb and bought zucchini!
Blossom end rot here also. To much rain then high heat. Then to much rain and then high heat again. Makes consistent watering difficult.
@@CA-rx9ze it certainly does. Hopefully things will ease up and you’ll get some decent tomatoes dinner than later.

@@pennyturk Hi Penny, thanks!
Quick Fire and Pinky Winky are HUGE pollinator magnets! The most out of any of the plants in my garden. That includes catmint, echinacea, roses, ornamental oregano. They just LOVE those panicles.
@@Tee-py2uo I especially love the loose flower clusters of Quickfire compared to the tighter clusters of other panicles. And yes, more pollinators for sure!

Hi Heather. Thanks for all of your educating videos. I truly miss your replies however. I cut down my salvia also. A neighbor told me yrs ago that I shouldn't do that. Well, I quietly proved my reasoning 😁 and I don't know why she would tell me, you should see hers 😂 LOL.
Hi Gina! I wonder what your neighbor’s reasoning was for not cutting back. Would be interesting to see their reaction when they saw yours!
Who knows but, she should do some better homework! ☺️😉
How long has your husband been with the CC Sheriff’s Police? My husband was on for 31 years.

Hi Heather, I'm sorry about your tree. Banana Plant is award winning!! Thank God you guys are ok 🙌 a bit too close to wreaking havoc. Your garden landscaped areas are beautiful! I have the same Cannas ... love this one the best of all cannas! COLOR! Did you see about the dam failure in Nashville, IL? Yikes. ❤ 🙏
I did see that! Catastrophic events like that really give one perspective. As for the cannas, I usually grow Pretoria but this year decided to shake things up a bit with two different peach-flowered varieties.
A hummingbird moved away from your planters as you swung back onto your patio to the frosted cuphia (3 min mark?). I'll take a hummingbird sighting anywhere I can!
I caught that too while I was editing. Love seeing those cheeky little things!

Thanks! I’ve had a few hiccups but all in all, things are doing well.
Love your vids. The music is somewhat distracting.. hearing you..nature...is best. No need for singing or loud music.
😂
Hi Tatiana! Thanks for tuning in. Sometimes I have to cover the noise of all my neighbor’s dogs barking in unison when I’m outside filming. I prefer the sounds of nature too.
Looks fantastic!!! Nice project done and what a difference it makes.
Thanks! I always love looking back on a project. The before and after are so satisfying.

How did you get away without installing a water pressure regulator valve? Even with the pressure regulator valve my hose sprayed tiny streams into the air. I had to turn my splitter part way off to get the hose to just drip. Any thoughts on this issue? Thanks, and have a good day.
I’ll have to look into that since I’m not familiar with what that is.
