    Thanksgiving cactus. The leafs are pointed instead of rounded, rounded leafs are Christmas cactus.

    "Schlumbergera truncate hybrid" has pointy segments, like a crab. Common nickname is Thanksgiving Cactus because it is a late fall bloomer.
    "Schlumbergera x buckleyi" has more rounded segments. Common nickname is Christmas Cactus because it is an early winter bloomer.
    "Rhipsalidopsis hybrid" has slightly differently rounded segments; known as Eastrr Cactus because it naturally blooms in spring. Easter Cactus is the most finicky of the 3 types.

    Great video! My yellow/pink Christmas cactus only pushed out one bloom this year, and I heard that light is what triggered to bloom, so I wondered if I could induce it to bloom again, but this time with more blooms. Can’t wait to see what it looks like in full bloom, the one bloom I got was incredible.

    This cactus that you have showed us wasn't a Christmas cactus ; it was Thanksgiving cactus because the edges of leaves has spikes. For Thanksgiving cactus the blooming season starts in November and keep blooming through the whole month of December.The Christmas cactus is hard to find, but the next cactus that stores sell and is easy to find is an Ester cactus, which is similar to Christmas cactus. Technically they are not cacti. Thank you, young lady for trying to help us. Love in Christ, gabriela.

    Julie, excellent information. I so appreciate this episode on your channel that I found with a random search. I work with Bonsai trees and I was tipped off by another bonsai enthusiast to do a "Christmas Cactus" bonsai. It's a bit of an odd tree for the typical art of bonsai, but some of us have made it work. Now I know how to get mine to have more blooms as I did two years ago (by accident). Great episiode

    I have 4 of these, 2 different varieties, and they bloom very well about Christmas. They are sitting in a window and I water them about every three days and fertilize them about once a month. Other than that, I do nothing with them. I have had the first two several years and the other 2 are just pieces from the originals.

    Yes very helpful tips. So put it up for 12-14 hrs a day, then rest of the time does it need bright, indirect light? Medium light or low light? First time ever trying one, but since you mentioned starting this in Sept, I'm way beyond that now obviously so doubt I'll get mine to bloom this year. Bummer. But maybe next year! 🌲🌷🌵

    • @julienicole92
      @julienicole92  4 года назад +2

      Hello Kelly! So once you get them to form buds I would say bright indirect light would be ideal. I would just make sure the room you keep it in has a window so it gets some light. Also you can force them to bloom in the spring too! I have actually had my Thanksgiving cacti bloom in the spring as well

    • @julienicole92
      @julienicole92  6 лет назад

      They usually just grow in the spring and summer. I'm not sure how long it will take yours to grow as large as mine, probably a few years though since it's a quarter the size of mine. Applying a balanced fertilizer in the spring and summer should also help with growth.

  • @FedUp-bd4gv
    @FedUp-bd4gv 4 года назад +1

    I keep mine outside in the shade all spring, summer and fall, on the north side of the house on my deck. I let them stay outside until the nights hit the upper 40's, like my Jade trees. I let them dry out between watering's so they don't rot. When I do bring them in I put them in my basement to acclimate them to my living room so I can enjoy the blooms.

    What I'm saying is the truth. My Christmas cactus starts blooming in November, it's now December 15th and still blooming a few blooms have fell off. Now the interesting part the plant is over 60 years old. It's 2021 I'm 68 and remember the plant on my grandmother porch ( it was her plant). Now even more strange my grandmother died in the month of November and it starts blooming around the day she died which so happens to be Thanksgiving and was her birthday. Now another strange thing my birthday is in May and the plant blooms in that month. This is a true story.

      It won't rebloom right away. You can try to force it again by giving it cool nighttime temps, 14 hours of complete darkness at night and bright sunlight during the day, but it will take several weeks for new buds to form.

    You keep referring to your plant as a Christmas Cactus, but what you are holding is a Thanksgiving Cactus. The tips are the same, but the sharp points on the leaves are found on a Thanksgiving cactus.

    In June I bought a Christmas cutting, it need to be reported sooooooo badly the soil will not hold water, I would like it to bloom this Christmas. It had 2 buds on it, but they have now fallen off. PLEASE help me fix my baby plant.

      You don't want the soil to hold water, you want a fast draining compost mix so that the roots don't rot. A cactus/succulent mix you can get from a garden centre is fine.

      My mother in law would Christmas Cactus in filtered sunlight on her porch, then transfered it to her coldest bedroom 65F over garage. with had low light with no sunlight or house light on as it was a guest room only. It lived there part of the year. It gets super long large blooms and almost on every single branch. Her cactus is about 3ft x 3ft and about 2 ft tall with red blooms.

      you can root one leaf segment and start a new plant. I'm cheap and I saw a faded slightly wrinkled leaf segment at the store just laying on top of the counter so I took it home simply put it in dirt halfway and a few months later it started growing good. in exactly one year's time, it now has 17 leaves on it and is 6 inches high, and had one nice deep pink flower fully open just this past thanksgiving. the rest never opened for some reason but I'm happy I got one flower for now. I'll see what happens after it gets more established ... but if you take a fresh leaf from a friend to root, make sure you let the segment dry in open for a few days to let fresh break heal over a bit before planting it or it may develop rot before it gets a chance to root ... it should be noted too that its better to root sections of 2-3 leaves rather than just one but you can still do it with just one if you're careful ...

      I get these Poinsetta/Christmas cactus drip feeders from Amazon, they are pretty cheap. I give my plant those throughout the spring and summer. You want to stop feeding at about the end of September. You shouldn't feed in the winter while the plant is flowering. After you plant has finished flowering, it may look a bit wilted and sorry looking. Don't worry, this freaked me out at first. But this is normal, its used up all its energy in flowering, don't panic and start feeding or over watering if this happens.
